Afro-Asia Cup - 3rd match

Africa XI v Asia XI

Asia XI won by 13 runs

Hi there. Welcome to the final ODI between Asia XI and Africa XI. I am Sriram Veera and will be bringing you all the live action today.

Toss Mahela Jayawardene's luck with the toss continues and it comes as no surprise that he has chosen to bat. Harbhajan Singh replaces Zaheer Khan and gets a chance to impress the selectors before the team selection for England. Let's see what he does today. Asia have made two other changes: Upul Tharanga in for Sourav Ganguly and Mortaza for Fernando.

For Africa, Ongondo and Tikolo get a look in while Albie Morkel and Odoyo sit out.

Weather: As you would expect in Chennai, the ground is scorching under a burning sun. One can only marvel at how these players manage to play back to back games.

Some bytes from Justin Kemp: "Coming out of the African winter and with no nets, adjusting was a bit difficult. I think our guys did well. If you look at scores we could have won both. We have a young team with players without much experience. They [Asia] are a very experienced bunch. We have pushed them hard and there was a possibility we could have won both the games but hard luck."

Mathew, our stats man, throws in this: "Yesterday's match aggregate of 643 is the highest for the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Also, Elton Chigumbura conceded 84 runs, the highest by a bowler at this ground. Mohammad Asif is not too far behind, having given away 82 runs in 9.5 overs."

0.1

0.3

Morkel to Sehwag, no run, back to the nagging line on the off stump, coming in, Sehwag, taking a middlestump guard, is behind the line and defends.

0.4

Morkel to Sehwag, FOUR, Carved over point. Sehwag is not wasting any time. Again not much risk as it was short and wide, Sehwag has no hesitation in flaying it over point.

0.5

Morkel to Sehwag, no run, fuller, closer to the off stump and Sehwag covers the off stump and lets it fly past him. Two fours already in the first over.

0.6

Meanwhile George Binoy, our man at the ground, is stalking AB de Villiers. "Watching AB de Villiers in the field. As the bowler runs up, he stands in a half crouch, when the bowler is half-way through his run-up, de Villiers takes three to four quick steps and as the bowler delivers, he's half-crouched again, perfectly balanced with feet parallel to each other."

Anand, a feedbacker, is yawning. "this has got to be the most pointless tournament ever - too hot for quality cricket - no commercial interest so both the ACC and ACA must be making a loss on the event - bad for the health of the players. Please let's not see it again"

More from George: "Back on the fine leg boundary, a ball boy is running between Dippenaar and the fans behind the fence, asking for autograph requests. He's got about five now, if he charged a decent commission he'd make a fair bit of pocket money. And no Dippenaar wasn't signing autographs when the ball raced to the fine leg fence."

9.3

Ongondo to Tharanga, OUT, Another stunner from the Africans. This time it is AB de Villiers. Short and outside off, Tharanga carves it to left of de Villiers. at point, who takes a step and goes airborne and watches the ball sail into his cupped palms.

43.5

Botha to Dhoni, 1 run, Dhoni takes guard well outside leg stump, Botha keeps his cool, follows him, really slow in the air, a doosra, not much pace to work with again, and Dhoni lunges forward to push it through mid off. Botha and Dhoni have a friendly chat about Dhoni's guard. Both are laughing.

43.6

45.1

Botha to Dhoni, 2 runs, again he stands outside leg stump, the ball is on the leg stump line, Dhoni forces it through extra cover and comes back for the second run. That's his 100. The crowd look pretty pleased. Mathew informs me that Dhoni's century is the fastest in Chennai. In international cricket ie. Don't ping me with your gully cricket exploits in west mylapore

45.2

Botha to Dhoni, 1 run

45.3

Botha to Jayawardene, SIX, Skips down the track, reaches the pitch of a tossed-up delivery, and lofts inside out over widish long off. Classy strike. Effortless.

Mathew loves this Afro-Asia. "The Afro-Asia Cup seems to be a tournament of rearguard action. In the first match at Bangalore, the last five wickets of Africa XI scored 252 runs out of their total of 283. The tally for this match is already 220, with 3 overs to go.

47.1

Chigumbura to Dhoni, SIX, It was above waist-high full toss, at the body and Dhoni swats it away. Hold on that was some swat. The ball has gone up and over long leg

47.2

Chigumbura to Dhoni, FOUR, Goes down on his knee and clubs a fullish delivery straight down the ground. A tired Dippenaar fails to stop it near the ropes.

47.3

Chigumbura to Dhoni, SIX, It gets more interesting. A miscue for a six. Another low full toss, outside off stump and Dhoni plays a forehand slog, doesn't time it well but hey it has disappeared over long on.

47.4

Chigumbura to Dhoni, 1 run

47.5

Chigumbura to Mashrafe Mortaza, OUT, banged in short, on the off stump line and Mortaza has a heave across the line, doesn't time well and balloons it to deep midwicket region

47.6

Chigumbura to Dhoni, 1 run, Dhoni charges down the track, the bowler drags back the length, pushed towards mid on for a single

Mahesh is in a mood to pick up a fight. "I would like to know where the "regular cricinfo ball-by-ball follower" named Phil (Dr Phil?) is hiding now. During the 22nd over, didn't he remark, "The Asian innings is a PR stunt to grant a win to the Africans so they play in this pointless tournament next year" After the onslaught by Dhoni and Mahela, wonder where Dr. Phil has gone!"

End of over 48 (18 runs) Asia XI 310/7 (RR: 6.45)
MS Dhoni    122* (90b 13x4 4x6)      E Chigumbura    9-0-61-2

48.3

Morkel to Harbhajan Singh, OUT, Joy for Morne. A length-delivery crashes through the defence of Harbhajan and knocks out the bails on the leg stump.

48.5

Morkel to Mohammad Rafique, no run, makes contact this time but steers straight to point

48.6

Morkel to Mohammad Rafique, no run, And again. Morne completes his quota. Considering the heat, the pitch and the marauding Asian batsmen, he has done rather well.

End of over 49 (5 runs) Asia XI 315/8 (RR: 6.42)
Mohammad Rafique    0* (3b)      M Morkel    10-0-50-3
MS Dhoni    123* (91b 13x4 4x6)      E Chigumbura    9-0-61-2

49.1

Chigumbura to Dhoni, SIX, Another six. Almost a deja-vu. Full toss, on the legs, Dhoni swings it imperiously over long leg. Matthew: "The last two days have witnessed a run-feast in Chennai. Three out of the four highest totals in ODIs in Chennai have come from the three innings that have taken place so far."

A banner goes up in the stands: "Where were you Dhoni in the World Cup?" Ah!

49.2

Chigumbura to Dhoni, no run, pulls to long leg, Rafique wants a single, Dhoni wants the strike. Dhoni wins.

49.3

Chigumbura to Dhoni, FOUR, That's why. Whack the ball contest continues. Short in length, on the stumps and Dhoni carves it over midwicket

49.4

Chigumbura to Dhoni, FOUR, ANd it does get better or, if you are an African, worse. Low full-toss, on the legs and Dhoni paddle-sweeps it, yeah I got that right, to fine leg boundary. Ala Ashraful.

49.5

Chigumbura to Dhoni, no run

49.6

Chigumbura to Dhoni, 2 runs, on the middle and leg, Dhoni wanted to send it out of Chennai, gets a inside edge on to the pad and out towards square-leg. He runs hard, Rafique responds and they get two.

Well ... five wickets had gone with just 72 runs on the board. The crowd were yawning, some of you had turned cynical, suggesting the Asians were not interested in the dead rubber and then Mahela and Dhoni took over. Runs came in singles initially before they started imposing themselves. The hunted had become the hunters. Where Mahela caressed his way, Dhoni bludgeoned in spectacular fashion to lift Asians to another massive total. Join us in a while for the chase.

End of over 50 (16 runs) Asia XI 331/8
MS Dhoni    139* (97b 15x4 5x6)      E Chigumbura    10-0-77-2
