Asia Cup 2011-12 February 29, 2012

Sehwag rested, Tendulkar picked for Asia Cup

Virender Sehwag has been rested from India's one-day squad for next month's Asia Cup, with Virat Kohli taking over as vice-captain. Sachin Tendulkar has been picked for the tournament, while allrounder Yusuf Pathan and Bengal fast bowler Ashok Dinda make comebacks. Fast bowlers Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav have been rested.

Kohli's elevation to vice-captaincy comes after his sustained run of success in one-day cricket. He was the highest run-getter in the format in 2011, is the leading run-scorer in the ongoing Commonwealth Bank series and has been one of India's few bright spots on the dismal tour of Australia. "The selection committee and board feels that Virat Kohli could be good future captaincy material," Kris Srikkanth, the chairman of selectors, told reporters in Mumbai.

Over the past few days, there had been intense media speculation about whether Sehwag and Tendulkar would be selected for the Asia Cup. Sehwag has had a poor run in the ongoing CB series in Australia, averaging 13 in five one-day innings.

Srikkanth stressed that Sehwag had not been axed. "Unfortunately Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan have been asked to take rest by the physiotherapist. It is purely on injury grounds both have been rested," he said. "I can assure you that nobody has been dropped."

Tendulkar has been selective about the ODI series he plays over the past couple of years. The CB series, in which he's made 143 runs in seven innings, was his first limited-overs engagement for India since last year's World Cup.

The CB series is also the only ODI series the injury-prone Zaheer has been involved in since the World Cup. The decision to rest him and Yadav opened the doors for Dinda, who last represented India in the previous edition of the Asia Cup, in 2010. His selection comes on the back of a successful Ranji Trophy, in which he was the second-highest wicket-taker with 37 in six matches. Several other contenders for a fast bowling slot, including Varun Aaron and Sreesanth, are still recovering from injuries.

Allrounder Yusuf has recovered from a knee injury which cut short his Ranji season, and will resume his battle for the No. 7 allrounder's slot with Ravindra Jadeja. Yusuf has been out of the Indian side since a listless tour of West Indies soon after being part of the World Cup-winning squad. Jadeja cornered that spot with some impressive performances against England and West Indies last year, but has not been at his best in the CB series. In the league phase, he took three wickets at an average of 109, and scored 101 runs in seven innings.

Among the fringe players, India have retained batsman Manoj Tiwary and legspinner Rahul Sharma, but have axed backup wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel.

India are defending champions of the Asia Cup, which will be held in Mirpur from March 11 to 22 and also features Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

sehwag is still young , and have a capacity to break another record in future . so , he should not be dropped .

Our selectors have lacked boldness in confronting facts head on. Sachin, Sewag have been failures in the ODI series in Australia but they say, they have rested Sehwag, Sachin deserves another chance because of his past achievements and also that he is a great player. Yes, he was, repeat "was" a great player but not now on current form. Similarly, all the seniors from Sehwag, Sachin, Dravid and VVS should be dropped summarily since they do not want to retire in spite of very poor performances. But Our selectors cannot take very tough decisions and BCCI is devoid of any vision or strategy for the future. It is just a money making commercial company. India can never aspire to be a Super Power in Cricket like Australia of recent past or the West Indies of the 1980's. God save Indian Cricket.

cant believe everyone's calling for tendulkar's head. You cant expect to win matches based entirely on youth. In this team itself the only experienced batsman are tendulkar, gambhir and dhoni. This means that youngsters occupy 4/7 spots in batting and in bowling 3/4 assuming praveen kumar plays. A successful cricket team needs the right blend of youth and experience so that the old pros can guide the youngsters.

Now we SL fans are crying that our selectors have wasted Chandimal's two years of cricket life by keeping Sanath, chamara silva, Kandhambi in the team.. Likewise in very near future Indian fans are gonna feel for some talented Indian youngsters who is crying inside and watching senior Indian bats-men's pathetic performance in TV. I have seen many talented young Indian cricketers in Ranji trophy and IPL. Anyway we are just spectators. Selectors know much than what we know.. Lets wait and see.

I have doubts about Jadeja""s value in the side and I would rate him well below Ashwin and possibly in par with YUSUF PATHAN. Amazingly he is paid 2 million in IPL. This reminds me of an Australian footballer who was described as having a market value of $900,000 but a performance value of $90,000.

Three seniors body language when they are in the field is never encouraging the youngsters. I think fielding coach should be bold enough to tell them to be alert. I think the players who should be rested, should perform in the domestic cricket to come back in the team, if he is not playing or not performing in the domestic cricket then should not be given the chance to play like Harbhajan Singh. It should apply on all whether it is Sachin.

It is wrong to blame selectors, because the team is selected nowadays by the corporates. Dhoni is the top favourite of the corporates, so everybody opposing him is to be thrown out. Dhoni decides who is senior. Sehwag is less than 3 year older than him he is a senior and Gambhir, who is 3 and a half months younger is also senior and fit for rotation. BCCI's silence is purchased by these corporates at very high rates. Kohli is the new blue-eyed boy of the corporates, so their is no surprise in his promotion. Long back when Azhar was made captain, Reebok took an undertaking from BCCI that he will remain captain for at least a year, before signing a contract with him. The present scenario is an improved version of that.

hope SRT gets his 100th 100 - subcontinent, teams like bangla - he's still easily one of the major batsmen in cricket, though maybe not as good as before... maybe all he needs is some easy runs and a 100 to get back into form....

  • Naresh28 on March 2, 2012, 7:01 GMT

Everyone has their favorites - players like RAINA, JADEJA, TIWARI, KHOLI, bring extra energy to ODI team through feilding. These are the futue of INDIA. We need a good pool of fast bowlers so that they can be rotated according to the tracks/tour.

  • Kashi0127 on March 2, 2012, 5:56 GMT

This was a great step making Kohli vice captain and dropping Sehwag. Even better would have been making him (Kohli) captain and dropping Sehwag, Dhoni, tendulkar. Not having any intimidating, dictating seniors would have given him a free hand. May Be have some like Dravid just to give some amount of comfort feel. Or even better if one can find some one like Kumble. Dropping Dhoni would not be anything bad... find some one who is a decent Wicket keeper.... remember we went to West Indies with the likes of Jeejebhoy and Krishnamoorthy when Windies had people like Robers, Holder, Boyce, Juliian , Sobers, Kanhai Greenidge and Lloyd?

  • _wOl_ on March 2, 2012, 2:48 GMT

I guess this just means that Kohli will be captain even faster, when Dhoni is suspended for slow over rates in the first few games of the Asia Cup. May he reign be long and prosperous.

  • Des_65 on March 2, 2012, 0:03 GMT

I think Sehwag is injured because, if not, why to drop him when the Asia Cup is played on Asian pitches. Doesn't make sense. Even if he is out of form on foreign pitches, he will do well on Asian pitches.

  • Nampally on March 1, 2012, 19:25 GMT

@Full-Blooded-Wallop: Respect is earned by your actions, OK. India has won the WC but what happened to the same team thereafter? How can a champion team play so badly as to lose test matches in 3 days? It may have been excusable for one series in England due to injuries. But with full batting strength, India failed again. Only one of the 4 tests reached the 5th day. What is the reason for the poor batting of the top 5 Indian batsmen - arguably the best top 5 in the World?A captain has to command respect of his players to get the best out of them & by motivating them to produce results.A relatively weaker batting line up of SL has done well under a "NEW" Captain in Australia - beating them twice + getting a bonus point too. So Mr., Get real! Indian fans want the team to perform like a well oiled machine not divided by Captain selecting a XI on favouritism & causing disunity in the team. Playing as a team, India hammered SL in last ODI! Where was this team spirit in 4 Tests vs.Aussies?

People who are asking for players like Umesh yadav ,Varun Aaron ,Sreesanth ,Ishant Sharma in Asia cup squad have to understand one basic thing .Bowling fast dosent translate into ODI success .Bowlers like Praveen ,Irfan have better economy rates and are better ODI bowlers .Stuart Binny could have perhaps gotten a chance over Dinda . Ishant and Sreesanth have shown beyond doubt that they are not ODI bowlers .Umesh Yadav except for one game in Australia hs been hammered in the ODI series on helpful pitches too . In India there seems to be different success rates for some bowlers in tests as compared to ODIS and i think all these bowlers are good for tests but not ODIS so selectors at least to me have got the right team regarding the seamers at least . I dont agree with Ashwin as spinner over Harbhajan .ODI series in Australia has shown that Ashwin cannot keep the runs down or take wickets ,Harbhajans a proven player ,why is he being dropped -no idea .

is anybody losing their grandfather's property if SACHIN scores 100 against Bangladesh? Don bradman made mincemeat of Indian attack, at that time India was worse than bangladesh then deduct those 100s, can you? Shame on people who themselves cant score a dozen runs are commenting on God of Cricket. Sachin should be there even for 2015 world cup. He has been the top 2 performers in 3 of 6 wrld cups he has partaken. He was 37 even then the top 2 performers in this world cup.

  • RKB21 on March 1, 2012, 15:24 GMT

There is no shame in scoring a century at international level against any team in the world. That way Shane Watson's recent big ODI score against Bangladesh has no merit. For all those fans who constantly complain about Sachin scoring against BD and Zim, why not present Bradman's record in Test cricket by taking out his scores against India and West Indies, the 2 weaker teams of Bradman's time.

Gambhir is the best captain so far with cent % record6 out of 6, leading from the front and scoring 2 centuries as captain. This selectors mistake may split Indian team in groups and spoil the unity.I think their intention is to make Gambhir as captain and drop Dhoni from Test.

This is a fantastic decision taken by selection committee to drop sehwag, becz he has not played a good innings since a couple of months. Promoting Virat as vice-captain is a terrific job showing a step towards the bright future of Indian Cricket. And the media should not interfere in to the Selector's job. Becoz everybody know if Sehwag will selected for the Asia cup then the question will be as why to select sehwag despite ofhis long poor performance..... Media has no idea about cricket, just know how to give problem to others.

Obviously TRADE MARK indian selection with no surprises.I still cant understand when is this kind of diplomatic selection vanishes in India. As every one knows no one has (even dnoni, srikanth) has the guts to axe sachin from the team irrespective of his performance. As every one knows Raina and Jadeja are Dhoni's favourite buddies,so it is obvious to have them in the team and the rest are the form of casual selection.w would be much happy if sachin, raina, jadeja were out of the team and more happy if gambhir wa given the captiency. For me Dhoni is not at all a cool and a good captain as everyone think of.He is just a lucky captain(lile ponting). He has got good players under his captainancy.Dhoni is bad at decision making, even in toss selection.poor in using power play strategcally.very poor in selecting the final eleven.poor in choosing the batting order.poor in using bowlers.I still dont know y they choose people like them to represent our 100 crore people.God must save India

BCCI has given one more opportunity to Tendulkar for scoring his 100th hundred. At least after scoring the hundred in the docile subcontinent pitches and conditions where the ball will not rise above the knee level hope Tendulkar retires from One Day Internationals. Because most of the Indian cricket fans and BCCI think that the time of exit should be left to Tendulkar. When the record is achieved, Tendulkar should make way for flat wicket bullies. Long live Tendulkarism!

  • Rens on March 1, 2012, 7:47 GMT

If people are worried about yougsters to be part of Team India, why don't we push to drop all existing players and let all brand new 15 play cricket for 2 years, by this lot of youngsters will get a chance to play for Team India. Also we can suggest an retirement age ,say 30. And retirement also can be planned for someone who played a fixed number of matches like 200 ODIs etc.

  • SHAKIB_IS_CLASS on March 1, 2012, 7:45 GMT

Good team selection except Rohit, could have given chance for Rahane or Mukund. No Rohit please.

  • SST19 on March 1, 2012, 7:39 GMT

People commenting about Sachin blocking youngster place (Say Rohit Sharma), truth is Sachin only played 2 matches in 1 year before WC, he playing playing WC is completly justified, after that in next one year Rohit had missed only 2 matches, Raina played all the matches, in Asia cup also Sachin will play in place of Sehwag. So I don't think Sachin costing a place for youngster. Before making availability to Ashia Cup Sachin only chooses challenging series, Had it been other way i am sure he would get 100th century relatively simpler situation (that was mistake from sachin side), maybe we would seen some different picture in last 6 month.

  • Hursh_Valecha on March 1, 2012, 7:35 GMT

Why are we comparing ourselves with the Australians ???? Thy have totally different attitude towards selection. And we are not treating cricket to be a game. You people tell me, what if india wins this CB series with sachin and sehwag getting centuries. What we will say then ????? Media will make them GOD again and dhoni as a man with golden luck. We all are saying "bring on completly new team". Its pretty simple that you cannot drop all 11 players or for the fact 5-7 out of 11 players from the team. Imagine we have the team with all new players without sehwag, sachin, dhoni, raina, ashwin, etc etc. And we have new team. We all are smart about how media will react if the new team fails in asia cup. Then what ?? drop everybody ?? Com'on man have some common sense. Why we are not having squad of 20 players and include Rahane, utthapa, karthik, saha. Make rotational policy for all and not just seniors. TAINTED RECORD. Yes. Tendulkar will eventually get his 100th 100. Maybe in the Asia Cup. Maybe the series after that. Maybe in 2 years. He will be allowed to play and keep trying until eventually teams will just toss it to him to get him out of cricket. A TAINTED RECORS!

The sentimentality of the fans is a bit nauseating. Let Sachin get his 100, 100 they cry, then he can retire. He has had a great career and a great cricketer but this endless search for this final hundred is just causing the national team more harm than good. When he does get it everyone will shout retire now....when HE should retire after the CB series.

  • Precioustar84 on March 1, 2012, 6:55 GMT

What did Gambhir do that was so wrong that Kohli was given VC over him??? Such a slap in the face for Gambhir really. Kohli played 8 matches for 373 and Gambhir played 7 for 308 most in pressure situations. Without Gambhir's starts, Kohli was nothing. One more match or a bit of patience from Gambhir, he might have been leading scorer for India after CB series but second best isn't a bad spot to be in. A maiden ton in tests by Kohli was the basis for the decision? Or what if he did not score 133 in last ODI? Also did you forget his antics towards Indian fans?? Seriously Kohli might be good batsmen but he is way too immature and inexperienced, and this move could very well go to his head. You've also created more tension between the players by announcing this before knowing final outcome of CB series. Improper timing, and pathetic move by selectors once again. Good going by Dhoni's lover, sure showed your loyalty.

Agreed sachin is in a poor form, agreed he is not at his best, agreed his is getting older and at his last phase of career, agreed he is in pressure to get his 100th century..But for God's sake pls show some respect when you speak about this great man..He has given lots to the country which me or you cant even dream about..when you ask him to retire from cricket, just check the numbers made by rest of the players..Will his retirement automatically motivates the youngsters to perform better? Will his retirement make the likes of Raina, Rohit & Gambhir to play short balls better? Will it help Ashwin to be more quicker than Sachin? Will it help Jadeja to be more responsible? Come on give me a break.. They should prove themselves first and utilise their oppurtunites better...

The selection of the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup in Bangladesh is good & bad. Good because the Selectors have recognised at last that Virat is a good captaincy material for the future, based on his winning the U-19 World Cup for India(the second one to do it, after Mohd.Kaif). Bad because the selection of Sachin & omission of Sehwag are both surprising & baffling. Different yard sticks being in the case of these two players. Sachin, literally, has bandages all over his body and Sehwag had only back spasm to complain about; yet Sehwag rested on fitness grounds and Sachin picked despite injuries. The only explanation in picking Sachin is ti give him a long rope to enable him to reach his milestone. Now if this is the reason (the Selectors will squarely deny this), then this is a very bad precedent. Don't know why Robin Uthappa is being continuously ignored and Rohit Sharma selected ahead of him. Why not a youngster like Manish Pandey considered? 4 seamers in squad a little baffling.

i dont blame this move by the selectors,u all will see that sachin and kohli will b the most runs getter in asia cup.they r high class and any day could b their day so never out sachin out of frame,he is the icon of indian batting line and he will b the only one against the storm of ajmal, afridi and hafeez,,wait and watch and remeber my these comments ,realty will come out in asia cup..and i recken sehwag will also b missed there coz after viv richard he is the only player in the world who has been made for cricket.i think every selector will keep him in his side forever.

For people who think it was a rash choice, I think you guys are wrong. The only problem I have is that he shouldn't have been vc right now. They should have waited for some more time so that he can get some more experience. Cricisme seems to have some problem with Dhoni but he doesn't seem to realize that Dhoni is the captain who took India to a much awaited world cup after 20 some years. I was indeed on my feet when he cleared the fence and I was in the air with almost tears passing through. And for people who have problems with sachin tendulkar, I think your forgetting that he is the master of cricket. He needs to stay to teach all the youngsters how to deal with pressure and win matches eventually. His role is crucial

  • on March 1, 2012, 6:08 GMT

Virat Kohli is very talented and in good form. There is no doubt about it. But his atitude is questionable. He is tempermental and easily be provoked.Behaving like Harbhajans & Sreesanths will not help the cause. He might face tough time from Ghambir, Raina,Sehwag & his Co., in future.Infact Ganghuly was lucky. He had the GENTLEMEN Cricketers in Dravid as VC with Sachin,Laxman and Kumble for the support. Now it is not that easy for the captain, especially, when your team is losinng.

I am totally surprised and disappointed by the vice-captaincy decision by Srikkanth. It was a rash decision by Indian Selectors there is no need to elevate Kohli to vice-captain so soon. I don't particularly have anything against Kohli but few star performance shouldn't mean captaincy. There are other more qualified players like Gambhir who totally deserves it. He is a level headed guys somone you can always count on who sets up innings from the start but unfortunately gets out in 90's allowing others like Dhoni to steal the thunder away from him. Gambhir can be agressive at the same time keep the wicket. I wished selectors were looking at the complete package vs. few good performances. Virat is a very good batsmen but lacks maturity and is too arrogant - Not a captaincy materail - Srikkanth you are totally wrong on this one. T

  • singhrahulrnc on March 1, 2012, 5:17 GMT

I think its a fair call taken by the selectors...No one has been dropped from the team due to weak performance...There would have been lot of critics if they would have dropped a player like raina, jadeja, rohit and would have retained player like sachin,sehwag..Since asia cup is in sub continent these players will definately do well in asia cup...also according to me yusuf pathan is lucky bcoz there was not such a great performance by him in duleep trophy, but a day before a selection of indian team he played such an brilliant knock...Its a Great move by a selectors to make Virat Kohli as a Vice Captian,he has got this ability & has already shown this by winning the under 19 world cup...One thing he has to control is his temperament,he must remain calm in the field and he must also respect the umpires decisions in the field..By the time Dhoni retires or goes out may be after next world cup,he will be matured enough to be a good prospect as a Indian Captian.......

Sad to see that India is putting Tendulkar ahead of the game/country yet again. Why not make him the prime minister while you are at it...

  • on March 1, 2012, 4:16 GMT

A sad selection with no bold moves except maybe bringing in Dinda. I can accept the fact that Zak should be rested but why rest others and not drop them. Sehwag, Raina, Ashwin (to a large extent) have doled out average or sub-par performances -- Ashwin's case with the ball -- Jadeja has been average (not too bad) and yet they are in consideration and selection for the series. We could have even "rested" some of the other seniors and rather sent people like Rahane, Karthik/ Saha, Utthapa etc. And then there is the baffling selection of Tendulkar -- lesser said about it the better. He is possibly one of the greatest the game has ever produced and one of the few greatest legends in Indian sport -- by his continuing to play in these mindless matches, i somehow feel he is actually doing injustice to his greatness or hallowed legacy.

  • PradeepSamuel on March 1, 2012, 4:03 GMT

  • pmbasu on March 1, 2012, 4:00 GMT

"Dinda? why him?" - suggest this reader to look at Dinda's bowling figures in the recently concluded domestic matches (mostly on dead tracks). I think that will answer your query.

  • on March 1, 2012, 3:43 GMT

I dont agree with the selection of Dinda, I know he had an outstanding season this year but that was in four day matches in Ranji Trophy and with red ball. In one day comp he has only taken 3 wickets @ an aveage of 41.67. So I dont know How could you justify that. I would pick him for Test matches but not for One Days. India Why would you drop Yadav, when people like Gmabhir recon ' He is the find of the tour'.

  • gpindian on March 1, 2012, 3:26 GMT

A mediocre player would go back to Ranji cricket to get back into form. Tendulkar is good enough to use the Asia cup to get into his stride. That explains why he's playing it and there's no harm in it. With the 100th ton and 50th ODI ton behind him, everything will be just like before. People were asking him to retire even in 2007, but he turned out to be the highest run getter in the 2011 WC, didn't he?

  • sports99 on March 1, 2012, 3:04 GMT

I never agree that youngsters learn so much when they play along with seniors specially the ODI/T20 games. Things been quite changed a lot and lot of players know what the pressure and expectations at the international level no matter it's in INDIA or Australia. Sachin played CB series in australia make a lot of sense but why he still wants to continue to play ODI cricket after CB series. It doesn't matter he can blast another 10 ODI centuries, but it's time to give a chance to new youngster who may be the next Tendulkar around the corner waiting for his chances.

Cricket in India is so wildly popular because of one man, and one man only, Sachin Tendulkar. Most cricketers are not even good enough to tie shoe-laces of the great man. People love to watch him play all over the world. Guys, an SRT is born every 1000 years. Shame on you who ridicule this greatest player of cricket ever born.

  • looloogun on March 1, 2012, 2:26 GMT

yusuf pathan is a good selection but he is wasted at n0 7 he is not an allrounder will be exiting to see him opening with sachin in absence of sehwag i like that he is player with dedication to play for india and turned himself as allrounder to find a place .if he gets time to settle he will be a deadly match winner with the bat alone.

  • AvidCricFan on March 1, 2012, 2:19 GMT

Good that Shewag is not selected. He has not done much lately. Once can't rest on laurels of one double hundred in ODI for ever. However, I am not in favor of rotating the spent failed players. Yusuf Pathan may be fine for Asia Cup, but he will be struggle to perform in WC. He is also not a good player of pace and bounce. Don't know the rational of persisting with Rohit Sharma, Jadeja and Raina. Hope SRT completes his 100 and fades into retirement. The team needs serious make over for the next WC.

  • Vinodha19 on March 1, 2012, 2:08 GMT

its good to rest zaheer. sachin and dhoni should also be rested. rohit and yusuf will perform only in subcontinet so giving them more chance is waste. we want manoj and rahul to be in playing 11. it is a gr8 move to give vice-captian to kohli and why is umesh not playing?

  • hnlns on March 1, 2012, 2:06 GMT

Indian selectors seem to be more obsessed and desperate about Tendulkar getting to his 100th century than himself. Otherwise, how can anyone explain his inclusion after scoring 143 runs in the most recent ODI outings ? Assuming India reaches final of the tri-series, I would rather have SRT score that century in either Brisbane or Adelaide rather than in subcontinental conditions. That would bring a very high value to the 100th 100.

  • MiddleStump on March 1, 2012, 1:40 GMT

Gambhir is the poorest runner between wickets. In ODIs it is only a matter of time before either he gets run out or the same fate is suffered by his partners. On this count alone he would have never made a popular captain! Which is probably why the selectors are looking at Kohli.

  • SandipB on March 1, 2012, 0:57 GMT

What's the point in declaring team during an ongoing series??

First of all, if Sehwag/Zaheer are carrying injuries then why did he play the last game or in case if India reaches final then will they be left out??

Assuming India reaches the final (highly unlikely), and Sehwag performs (again unlikely) and Rohit fails (highly likely) then will they continue to keep Sehwag out and Rohit in??

Prior to this series, Sehwag/Gambhir/Raina had been the vice-captain , and in fact filled in as captain whenever Dhoni didn't play, so by appointing Kohli as VC , what kind of message selectors are conveying to Sehwag/Gambhir/Raina specially the last two guys.

And what's the point in selecting 3 guys fighting ( Jadeja/Yusuf/Irfan) for no.7 position? Why there is no back-up wicketkeeper?

  • niraj13 on March 1, 2012, 0:37 GMT

@ Rohil Menon, I agree with you 100%. If you can't praise a real hero, you will NEVER be a hero. Anyways, I still BELIEVE that Sachin will score his 100th ton against the Aussies in March, 2012.

  • KushalChoudhury on March 1, 2012, 0:24 GMT

In my opinion, this was a long time coming. Sehwag hasn't really performed ever since the ton against Bangladesh in the WC. Yes, I know he smacked a double ton, but it was against the WI and again it was in India. It's a good move in my book.

Now, I also know that Virat Kohli played an outstanding innings just the other night but he's still too young. After MSD, India will need a transitional captain before ultimately making Kohli the skipper, but I would have thought GG was a much better choice as vice-captain. He not only has the leadership skills, but also has the experience and temperament which Kohli lacks at the moment.

  • Cricfantoronto on March 1, 2012, 0:22 GMT

    My two cents:

Personally, I like the team. However, it is too premature to promote Virat Kohli as a vice-captain. How can he suddenly overtake Gautam Gambhir? We will end up having more capt/vice-capt in the team and this will be cooking up another potential ego clash.

  • MSU_BULLDOG on March 1, 2012, 0:17 GMT

I was wondering when will India play BanglaDesh/Zimbabwe so SRT can get the 100th 100 monkey off his back. Here is his chance. GO SRT!! Let us accept it - he is not getting any younger so we cannot expect all those great things we are used to from him. But let the man have his chance to get there and retire in peace.

  • gitapat on March 1, 2012, 0:10 GMT

The decision to "rest" Sehwag is the correct decision as he does not deserve a place in the Indian team for ODIs.In fact his continuation even in the Indian Test team needs to be evaluated as he has been a failure in England and Australia. As for Tendulkar,he should have stopped playing ODIs and should have concentrated on Test cricket like Rahul Dravid-the only reason that he is playing ODiIs is because he wants to keep adding runs to his records! Dhoni is the right choice for ODis and 20-20 cricket and must be shown the door in Test Crcket and be replaced by Dinesh Karthick as wicketkeeper and by Gambhir as captain.

  • Mali-T658 on March 1, 2012, 0:05 GMT

Duh! I'm sick of the people ranting about Sachin as if he's been playing only for that 100th ton. Give it a break, guys. The man has achieved many heights and need not crave for just one more ton. Having carried the hopes of one billion Indians for more than 20 years is the greatest accomplishment itself. People have enjoyed every time he had hit a ton and now it's quite funny seeing people coerce him to retire. Give the man some respect which he deserves, guys.

Guyz Do u know that since sachin's 99 th century, 63 players scored 134 centuries in different formats of cricket. This is the longest gap in sachin's two consecutive centuries, The highest number of days between two consecutive centuries being 510 ( between first and second test centuries). This is the second highest number of days. As per my knowledge it's been : 422 days after his last test century; 355 days after his one day century ! High time, Y to back ! I do accept that Sir SRT served for nation, but one should prepare team according to the requirements that is WC 2015 : With this kind of performances (143 in 7 innings ) can sachin score like 2003 WC ..?? Remember 2015 WC is in Australia !! I don't want to derogate succesful players, Make the team for the future !

Sachin and Shewag gave India the start they needed in the last match at Hobbart followed by everyone else who chipped in and of course Virat's excellence. Captain or Vice-Captain, the basic criteria is his temper. if he has control on it - he doesnt fit to be VC. We need Mr Cool and guy who can address concerns and pass advice in all situations.

  • goli6 on February 29, 2012, 23:45 GMT

Selection committee Be strict like Australia ! If Indian Selectors were stringent like Australians, there would not have been no long careers for any indian players ! This is not to criticize the senior players. The point is what is the necessity to back the players even if they are axed like Kris srikanth mentioning that sehwag and zaheer were rested on physio's suggestion or backing sachin- The CB series, in which he's made 143 runs in seven innings, was his first limited-overs engagement for India since last year's World Cup. "SO WHAT?" These kind of dramas make the players become cool, One more point is The 2nd leading wicket takerof ranji trphy given chance for Asia cup. What happend to leading wiccket taker of the same ranji.? He doesn't have any big support or what? Ponting axing should be taken as a lesson by any selection committee to prepare a supperb & brilliant team !! sachin sir,134 centuries were scored since ur 99 th Hope Asia cup ~ a platform to get cheer by poor fans!

  • mycricket2007 on February 29, 2012, 23:42 GMT

Srinivasan to selection committee: Pl. keep in mind that 4 slot (Bowler/Batsman/Keeper/Alrounder) (Ashwin/Raina/Dhoni/Jadeja) is reserve for CSK and that too in playing 11 so you can select remaining players.

  • cricket-izz-life on February 29, 2012, 23:27 GMT

For all of you after SRT's head, I think he is still good enough to be selected ahead of the likes of Jadeja's. Jadeja has been selected bcoz of his performance against Eng and WI in Indian conditions. SRT has not played since world cup where he did very well. He chose to play in CB series, did not quite get as many run and everybody is after his head. If he had skipped CB series, everybody would have been complaining about that. He is good enough to select himself in Team India now, same might not be true in 2015 but India should start building without loosing too many matches. India was on top in CB series and the rotation policy brought them to brink of early exit. Its important to keep winning so that the morale of the youngsters stays high at the same time.

These two guys have been in the India team for 'donkeys years', especially Bhajji, and he has finally been 'rested', after some very dismal performances. Hopefully, some more will be 'pensioned off' shortly.

  • on February 29, 2012, 23:11 GMT

Notwithstanding good performance of Ashwin against W Indies on spin conducive pitches of Delhi & Calcutta, he failed to put pressure on Australian team in any of the matches. Bhajji could have performed better due to his fighter sportman spirits. He could have done better in Delhi & Faridabad matches against W Indies. Sri Kant in his recent outburst has proven himself to be an unfit for the job of a selector unless there is some other reason for keeping him in this job.

  • hunksurat on February 29, 2012, 21:58 GMT

I still cannot understand why selectors use word ''Dropped" and keep using a lame word "rested". Based on form I think Sehwag, Sachin (Rested), Raina, Ashwin and Jadeja should have been dropped. May be Sachin could be included with a short lease of 5 game or series to prove that he has still got it. Pls dont get me wrong I am a diehard Sachin fan but its painful to watch him get out trying to score 100. He has nothing else to prove so he shd ideally forget about getting that hundred and enjoy his last few months/year in cricket. He is a true legend. Our team is dearly missing the finisher...Yuvraj Singh the King. My heart goes for him. I am waiting to watch him to play again.

  • Hesh78 on February 29, 2012, 21:45 GMT

Sachin should be asked why he wants to play the Asia Cup, since he picks & chooses the ODIs he plays. Dhoni should be rested, since his workload is affecting his captaincy performance. Raina should be dropped for not performing, if he cannot play on bouncy tracks he has no business being in the team.

  • Nampally on February 29, 2012, 21:36 GMT

Srikant says Sehwag has injuries, as per the Physiotherapist, & hence rested. I feel the real reason is punishment for being out of tune with Sir Dhoni! The same is the case for Gambhir - loses his vice-captaincy to Kohli. I don't think Sehwag was asked about his fitness. This is getting similar to the WI conflict of Chris Gayle with the Board. Anyway, the real problem is Dhoni as captain. He failed twice - once in England & now in Australia - 2 whitewashes of 4-0. The worst is in each case some tests were over in 3 or 3.5 days!.Does Dhoni deserve to be captain with his weird field placing & irrational team selection? India need to groom 3 guys quickly, to take over captaincy in 3 formats. The Selectors had a golden chance of playing C.Pujara in the squad and groom him for leadership. Kohli is a great batsman but his temper tantrums & use of blue language does not make him a leadership candidate.A level headed person like Tiwary, Gambhir or Pujara are 3 ideal captaincy candidates.

And for those people who are saying that it is a good chance for Sachin to score in Bangladesh, I would say YES, WHY NOT? For the information of such self styled cricket gurus, Sachin has scored at least a century against all ODI teams except one. Bangladesh. So that should set the record straight. He has maximum 8 centuries against Australia, the most dominant team in his time followed by 7 against Sri Lanka.

  • SanjivAwesome on February 29, 2012, 20:07 GMT

@jerryman - that cracked me up! Srikant has surely put Tendulkar on pension - his recent performances certainly don't deserve selection. Shame. On recent performance, I would have left out Raina, Jadeja and Sharma and tried others on the reserve bench.

Bhajji required for the series, no doubt aswhin is very well bowler but we can;t forget the service of bhajji , he is the key and heart of indian team and how we can forget last time when he played against Pak bhajji bhajii played a important innings so bhajji should back again in team.

  • Rumy1 on February 29, 2012, 19:52 GMT

Top 4 technically and temperamentaly adept batsmen who deserve to be in Indian team but sadly aren't for lack of godfathers in BCCI and Selectors are JAFFER/32 (for Tests), KAIF/32 (Tests and ODIs), PUJARA (Tests and ODIs) and BADRINATH/31 (all 3 formats). With Sehwag, Kohli, Dhoni/Saha and these 4, India will be served well in ODIs and Tests for next 4-5 years.Gambhir, Raina and Rohit should be restricted to only T20s.They have failed time and again despite enough chances to prove themselves.Ashwin is an average Ranji offie with a carrom ball.He is not ODI / Test level material and could be restricted to only T20s.Rahul Sharma looks good for ODIs / T20s.He could be a match winner on any track.Ojha is a quality bowler and looks good for ODIs / Tests. However, it is Bhajji who deserves a comeback.Praveen, Dinda, Vinay and Mithun are all spent forces.Time is up for them.Umesh, Irfan and Ishant must be persisted with.Yusuf must be prefered over Jadeja in ODI / T20.Zak to play only in Tests.

Dropping Sehwag is good. He needs rest to clear his mind. He just not playing well at all. Also i think Gambhir should be ODI captain and Dhoni should be wicket keeper. For future sake. Ofcourse they are same age but i think gambhir deserve chance to be captain in his ODI form. I would have picked uthappa as stand in wicket keeper. The problem with india is State cricket boards do not select strong players in ranji squad , they all picked based on round robin of influenced politicicans big wigs relatives. It is not open transparent system. India as a country never like to excel like china doing. We just follow never lead.

  • rips4u on February 29, 2012, 19:36 GMT

I think this team selection raises few key questions:

-If Sehwag is indeed rested on medical records, then what is the state of his fitness in the CB series now. If India is thru to the finals, will he be carrying his injury and play thru the finals? -I feel its bit harsh on Gambhir (being senior compared to Kohli) for not given VC. Gambhir has what it takes to be in the thinktank along with Dhoni. No offense to Virat, he played great, but it seems like one great innings is all needed to earn a ticket to be VC. Giving VC to Virat is too early for him and I hope it does not backfire Indian cricket in a long run. -Coming to Dhoni, I feel he should have been rested for the Asia Cup given the amount of pressure he has been in this long and fruitless Aus tour. That would be re-vitalized him a lot. -For Sachin, it almost makes me believe that he is given an opportunity to get his elusive 100th ton in sub-continental conditions.

All those who say he is been picked in ASIA cup to score his 100th Century please turn back to the previous CB series and find out who scored back to back centuries and how India reached finals and won the series. Just remember this is the first time in the history of Cricket a player is going to score 100 Centuries and is one of the legends the world has ever produced. What if India happens to reach finals and he scores back to back centuries will all these people shut up.

  • on February 29, 2012, 19:12 GMT

@Ganchu - Nice comment, Sachin will make his 100th century against Bangladesh or Pakistan. Pakistan just because they have habbit for such complacent bowling time to time and would definitely give Sachin a chance to make 100th century. I am a Pakistani Fan but such would be possible. Lets hope what this Asia Cup would bring to us.

One thing I could not understand is hw fans r saying Dhoni to be dropped from Oneday or T20.Is is the frustration of just 2 international tours. If anyone look at his record in both the format he will be surely in the best XI of all time.Even with his stats he beats players like Gilchrist.Bevan and hussey ,the best finisher world has seen are being compared to dhoni and vis versa. This seems absolutly rediculous. Please think and say who in present scenario can replace Dhoni. One thing I can understand he is persisting with Jadeja continously. But he has claimed that he require a left arm spinner who can bat and field as well ,say replacement for Yuvraj. So Hw can tiwary or irfan or any one else can fit to XI playing. We shuld understand each one has a role defined and can be substituted if someone fits to his role.

Felt really bad for a man who has given Indian cricket everything, be it his batting or captaincy, a man who is a thorough professional, a man who took a floundering Indian side on his shoulders on the WC final, made a solid 97 and laid the platform for the captain to take the match and all the glory along with it, a man who has always been there, scored 70s, 80s and 90s but never got the recognition he deserved, still never complained, a man who took up the captaincy when thrusted upon him and almost secured a 100% success rate, a man who has proven to be a success story as a player and as a captain.. a man who lost his vice-captaincy to another youngster just for one innings despite playing an equally crucial innings in the same match.. A man who deserves to be a hero, but who will always be known as the Dark Knight of Indian cricket - Gautam Gambhir, you deserve all the recognition and not the stupidity shown by the Indian selectors..

sorry state of indian selection , they do not have the guts to drop the God from the pedestal- very selfish player and lousy and spineless board. Just look at the aussies, how directly without mincing words they have said Mr.Ponting you have been a great player and served us for such a long time but with due respect your expiry date has come so please we are taking you off the shelf in ODI, does India has that guts in them to do that ? a big NO. Still Clarke is fit and roaring but they are talking about his replacement which would come in the next 5-7 years, just see how far sighted they are and how they plan every eventuality ahead of time. We tried to copy everything aussies did but not these things which are an absolute necessity to the future. When the selectors or the board does not have the guts to drop him, at least SRT himself should have some self respect and concern for the game he played for such a long time, he should atleast quit on his own with respect but again a big NO.

The squad looks decent. It would have been better if jadeja was replaced by anyone. He is an useless batsman. He has 5 half-centuries in ODI's and India lost all of them. He had 9 30+ scores of which 8 are losses. In T20s whenever jadeja crossed 5 India Lost. He is no way suited for no 7, where only match winners fit and not match losers. Ashwin, harbhajan and pathans are better batsman than jadeja even though ashwin and harbhajan arent tagged as allrounders.

  • Wiper_Warriors on February 29, 2012, 17:59 GMT

For those who complained about Sachin's inclusion - Sachin has just one bad ODI series in Australia, otherwise he played really well in last two years. So if you think he should drop because of his poor form, it is not true. If Ricky Ponting is in fine form just like he was in test series, would Australia drop him?.. Big No so why Sachin. Plus Asia cup will be in Bangladesh, so in wet & slow pitch Ravindrta Jadeja will be handy and so Yusuf Pathan.I am looking for rotation of openers in this series, really hard to find replacement if any regular opener will injured.

  • Harishonthemic on February 29, 2012, 17:54 GMT

I saw this(Sachin being in ODI squad) coming a long time ago. Sachin is probably in the squad to finish his two landmarks (centuries): One 100 to reach 100 centuries in international cricket; the other 100 to reach 50 centuries in ODI cricket. And it's damn easy to do it against sub-continental teams on sub-continental pitches. Personally, (if there are no other players on bench) I would have retained Sehwag as well, because he's good only on these pitches. (175, 219). But there are young talents, so he should make way. Wish good luck to them.

  • on February 29, 2012, 17:48 GMT

Just to inform; following are the sachin statastics... please look at his records at home and away.... Don't write blindly about him without knowing his exact stats.... In the on going series he had good starts in every match but he just failed to cash on it... he also had some 50+ scoring as well in both tests and one days.

    One day - Total 100s - 48, India Won- 34. India lost- 12, Tie - 2, @Home- 20 and away - 28 Test Matches- Total 100's- 51, India Won - 20, India lost- 11, Draw- 20, @Home- 22 and away- 29

  • on February 29, 2012, 17:36 GMT

So, Virat Kohli has been appointed VC in Sehwag's absence; that's a blessing in disguise although I feel for poor Gambhiri, Always overshadowd.

  • akashchandran on February 29, 2012, 17:33 GMT

Even on current form only Virat Kohli is playing better than Sachin. Then why he should he be forced out. The truth is that from the Asia Cup onwards all the matches for India this year or even next year are going to be in India where even a Raina or a Tiwary will look like a Sachin. It is best that Sachin does not retire from ODI. He can just take a break for an year after the Asia Cup and concentrate on Tests and if he maintains goods form and also fitness he can think of returning to ODIs in the SA series in 2013 with an intent to play the 2015 WC. Otherwise he can retire from all forms together ideally after the Test matches in the SA series in 2013 December.

  • Precioustar84 on February 29, 2012, 17:28 GMT

I knew the last match India won will do more damage then good. Those that was Rohit and Jadeja to be dropped now, who have you lined if Tiwary, Rahane, Pujara, Utthapa, etc fail too?? I agree these guys need their fair share of fat chances but lets just accept it won't happen until Dhoni or Srikkanth retires sadly. @Sachin fans - do you really think Sachin will earn any more respect if he earns his 100th ton? Or is the respect he has achieved until now any less with 99 tons? What is it that Sachin is trying to teach the youngsters that he hasn't already taught in last 22 years? Also, how can he teach anything to players in SUBCONTINENT who already are very good at playing there?

  • shuvoroy31 on February 29, 2012, 17:26 GMT

Not too long ago, lulled by this profound sense of security, Tendulkar was picking and choosing ODIs to play at his will. It was almost like some games or some tournaments were not occasion enough to merit his celestial presence. Such hubris! But now, having realised that playing Bangladesh on the archetypal feather-beds prepared in that country holds his only realistic chance of scoring that inconsequential hundred, he readily acquiesces to travel to Bangladesh for a full series.

  • niraj13 on February 29, 2012, 17:26 GMT

It's good to know that the selectors have kept faith in 'old' Tendulkar and given him another chance. Everyone has seen what he is capable of and just based on the performances for the last few months, you cannot force him into retirement. Hope he regains his touch and bows out on a high. If anyone deserves to go on a high, it is Sachin. If it was an Aussie player, he would have been dropped, but desis don't have to follow other people (including aussies) in everything :). Also, as someone pointed out, where is Rahane? He deserves more chances just like some of the other young players. And since Sehwag is out, we could definitely use another opening batsman in case Sachin or Gambhir get injured or need to be rested. There is also no point in selecting Manoj Tiwari as everyone knows he will be warming the bench for the entire tour. But overall, a good squad for this series.

  • on February 29, 2012, 17:26 GMT

LOL, Let Sachin Tendulkar play as many ODI as he wants. Who cares if India loses or not. He has held his spot for many years. New comers are kept out just because he wants to play. If new comer don't get the chance now and suddenly everyone retires. Then, it will be a CHAOS. This little guy is something. He said he wants to play and everybody lets him play.

    1. I feel Robin Uthappa could have given a chance because he would suit both the opening slot if needed or optional wicket-keeper slot in emergency, instead of partiv patel. 2. I also feel Varun Arun & Umesh yadav should have given a chance but unfortunately they are injured. 3. I am happy with yusuf pathan's selection on Indian condition. 4. Would have been happy if some unknown fast bowler got a chance and prove himself other than Dinda, that's my opinion but for dinda recent form clicked. 5. Rahne could have given a chance instead of shewag, who proved his talent before. 6. I am the most happiest person on sachin's selection, he is a master his presence will boost our sides confidence, we need not to say he know's when to retire and there is lot of time left for next world cup, so don't worry guys....

  • tylerhans on February 29, 2012, 17:10 GMT

practically I think this is the best team under the circumstances... ever heard of succession planning?? ... uthapa is not reliable and anyway we have one agressive opener already... we don't need openers, we have gambhir when sachin leaves or gets kicked out. we need to groom middle order and 1 down 2 down batsmen.... virat is only one established and then ??? rohit, raina are 20-20 players ?? yuvraj is out for now..... jadeja and yousuf are finding feet ..... dhoni is there .... where are the replacements for these people... the positive thing about this is when u are trying to find replacements atleast there is one player who you can rely on... forget sachin as sachin and think about him as an opener.... he has had one bad series... check the stats of ricky pointing (ave 30) and sachin (ave 45) and virat (ave 46) for the past 2 years.... if performance is criteria then why should u drop sachin? unless it is Sachin tendulkar and not the player u want to drop.

Questions remain about the bench strength. Dinda, Vinay Kumar or even Manpreet Gony are medium fast at best. Domestic giants, but are they really good enough for international cricket? Parthiv is axed, Kaarthick is out of form, so who is being groomed as the successor to Dhoni? if it's Saha, he needs to be in all squads. Where does it leave Utthappa (back-up keeper too)? Jadeja is a decent spinner, but #7 allrounder needs big hitting ability - which makes either of the Pathan brothers ( Irfan more so now, which his better bowling ability) an automatic choice. Though Jadeja's fielding adds some value. Rohit Sharma was MoS for last two ODI series we played - one bad series, no chance in tests when Laxman was failing, and he is dropped? Tiwari scored a century in his last ODI outing, and gets no chances in entire Aus tour? What's Harbhajan's report card? Ashwin clearly isn't ODI ready - shoddy fielder to boot. If not Bhajji shouldn't Ojha get a look-in? or even Mishra?

  • Nampally on February 29, 2012, 16:23 GMT

I am surprised at some notable omissions from this squad. C.Pujara is not only a fine batsman but is a potential Indian Captain. He should have been the first choice in the squad & in XI. He is very talented young man who was outstanding in Under 19 tourney both as a batsman & as the Captain. The problems faced by Dhoni in his captaincy deserve the search for a NEW Captain. I place Pujara as the best candidate. Also I don't see any point in persisting with Jadeja & Y.Pathan. Irfan Pathan is good & proved himself by performance for #7 spot. Also if Rahul Sharma & Tiwary are warming the bench consistently, either they need to be omitted or Dhoni needs to be reprimanded about his unjustified choice of Jadeja in XI. As long as Jadeja & Raina are in the squad, 2 spots are reserved for them by Dhoni. Dhoni is smothering talent by benching them. This is where the change needs to start for future. How will Tiwary, Rahul, Rohit, Pujara get into XI as long as Dhoni favours Jadeja? Let us Get Real!

  • Sakz on February 29, 2012, 16:15 GMT

@ N.Sundararajan..hahahahaha-->Your comment and the logic for it is really funny. How did you make out that he is obsessed with his 100th 100? Just because he completed his 99th century, does this mean he is obsessed. This is very obvious that after 99th it will be 100th.And you want tendulkar to score century in every match. This is really funny.Tell me how many Indian batsman have scored a century in last 10 innings . sehwag -1 double century, kohli and yuvraj - one century, yuvraj, gambhir, Dhoni, rohit sharma, jadeja, raina, ---none. I do agree that Tendulkar didn't perform the way he always do ...but who has performed in Australia except gambhir and kohli .......Test matches can't be won without taking 20 wickets and except 1st test match Indian bowlers couldn't take 20 wickets and let Australia score a mammoth score. Even Tendulkar was top scorer in first 2 test matches from Indian side.Whatsoever my point is that stop criticizing someone who knows more than you about cricket.

  • on February 29, 2012, 16:12 GMT

This is transistion phase for Indian team which seems to drifiting to the Azhar era of politics and self above country atitude for a couple of players. It may seem like a dumb move but eventually thnigs will fall in place . It might cost a few series and a couple of them have proven costly but with Kohli promotion and Tiwary and Sharma and couple of others waiting in wings ..all will be well soon. India never has been a dominant side ever (becos of lack of bowling talent) like Australia of last decade and WI of the 1970s but India has always managed to be in top 4 cricket nations 90% of the times after 1983 and this trend will likely continue after this change where slope will go down a little but a couple of youngster will put their hand up and get it on an upward slope. Players like Rahul Sharma and few others will carry on the average bowling level outfit and carve victories at times when they get chance.

Too early for Kohli to be vice-captain but good to see selectors try something different. Hopefully we won't see any crazy antics from him. Why is Umesh "rested" and why don't the bowlers have rotation policy? Looks like Sachin will continue to play until Arjun takes over.

Tendulkar is there because they think he can get a 100 against Bangladesh easy. This obsession with his 100th 100 has set India back so much. Too bad literally 90% of the country care way more about individual records than the team winning.

Its not a good selection by the selectors because we missed some good talents like Pujara, Uthappa,Saurabh tiwari .We have such a amazing players like Kohli, Raina, Tiwari in middle orders and they have that ability to won the match single handedly for Ind so need to give chance to the younsters more for the future Indian team, I m agree with the selection of Master but we missed some more young players .We can beat Ban, Pak easily In Asia Cup and just we have a tight fight with lankans so after Asia cup selectors will need to think future indian team in upcoming series.

  • svel on February 29, 2012, 15:39 GMT

@ Vikram Atit - - harbajan instead of ashwin is a big big joke... its been a long time since harbajan spun the ball... and what wrong has ashwin done... he bowls most of the overs in powerplays, and he is the most economical bowler for India for past one year.. and he regularly takes big wickets... and he bats well too... but the only point is tat he lacks in his fielding... u saw the catch he took in the last match... fielding can always be worked upon... even muralidharan and swann has struggled in australia.. and ashwin has an healthy avg... for me ashwin is currently the best spinner in india..

  • on February 29, 2012, 15:37 GMT

Ashwin was ordinary, on the Aussie trip. I am glad Rahul Sharma has been retained. He bowled well, but was under-utilised. Dinda is a misfit, despite his success at the Ranji level. There was a case for the return of Ishant Sharma. I would have included Virender Sehwag, despite his failures, in Australia. He would have simply exploded in familiar environment. Yusuf Pathan is a flash in the pan kind. He can never be consistent. Hope the Indians have better fortunes in the Asia Cup.

who is replacement keeper for dhoni

  • Rumy1 on February 29, 2012, 15:25 GMT

Mohd.Kaif, Badrinath and C.Pujara should have been brought back to replace Gambhir, Sehwag, Raina and Rohit. Special mention is required here for Kaif who surely merits a comeback into ODI and Test teams as well. He has been in great nick all 2010 through 2011. Kaif just a hit a solid century in Duleep Trophy. And also hit a century and some fine fifties in ongoing Vijay Hazare one day tournament. And not to speak of his fielding abilities. Plus bonus is Kaif's superb captainship. Look what he did with UP team with two Ranji Elite championships and three runners up under his belt. Kaif will be ideal to groom Kohli for future. Neither Gambhir nor Sehwag is a captaincy material. Kohli is raw. He needs time to mature as cool international player. PA Reddy - opener from H'bad should also have been blooded in for ODIs in place of Sehwag / Gambhir. He has been in great nick. I am not sure if R.Bist has the technique to succeed at highest level. And Bhajji should replace Ashwin immedately.

  • on February 29, 2012, 15:24 GMT

All of you should stop criticising the selection..i think its a fair one..would have liked dhoni to be rested and young parthiv given his chance...gambhir could hav been made the captain for this series.. Everyone thinks of this series as not important enough as if we are playing only bangladesh..hello..??srilanka and pak are also there needs to be a good balance of seniors n youngsters..sachin wants to play and i dont think anybody has the guts to drop him..its fair enough because he knows more than anybody what to do..manoj tiwari and dinda have also been included..all the fans turned critics should reconsider their opinions.. absolutely good move to make kohli the vc..have to mould him into a good cricketer in another 3-4 years and then it would be the right time..he has it in him...he will make an excellent aggressive pro active captain.

  • another_cricket_lover on February 29, 2012, 15:24 GMT

seriously people! how does it matter if sehwag was dropped or rested? he's not in the squad so stop whining about the words, accept the reality and move on. age shouldn't be the factor deciding the retirement of a player and i'm right there with all the aging players BUT! the ONLY criteria to remain in the team should be the performance, be it an old or a young player. by that yardstick, a lot others needs to be dropped from the current Indian cricket team. on a separate note, i just don't understand the whole tamasha behind Kohli's inning. what do you expect from an international player in a crunch situation? deliver! right? its only in Indian cricket that a word like great can be used so loosely. it was an aggressive inning, other players (that aren't considered great like jayasuriya or afridi) have played quite a handful of such innings.we need to raise our bar of greatness if we really want to be a great team, more consistent performances like this and not just on off here and there

Exactly what Saha and Manoj Tiwary have to do to get in the India team? Seems scoring a century gets you the right to carry water to Jadeja, and being the best wicket-keeper and scoring loads of runs in domestic first class cricket, the right to carry Dhoni's gloves in T20.

  • on February 29, 2012, 15:14 GMT

  • Srik_Ravi on February 29, 2012, 15:00 GMT

Please all.. stop talking about SRT... we are not even eligible to talk about that great man... Just think of the services he has done for Indian cricket. He carried the Indian team alone on his own shoulders for many many years.

Its so easy to comment... We need not tell SRT when to retire.. nothing will effect him... he knows better than any of us what to do.....

Better leave him alone and do whatever he wants...

He still has the fire in him and he is much better than so many youngsters we are talking about.

If people are to be dropped .... more than half of current indian team has to be dropped including the captain...

How many millions have cheered when Sachin got his double at 36. Why do we start talking bad when they dont do well..

We never know.. SRT could hit a golden patch again when he finishes his 100th ton...and again all of us will talk great abut him..

so lets be fair to great mean like SRT, Rahul, VVS....

Dropping Sehwag is a bold move (I call it dropping, not resting), dropping only Sehwag and still having Sachin because no one dares to lay a finger on him is shameless and spineless.... Just compare their recent achievements and I think my statement will sound valid... Also, persisting with mediocre jadeja and the yet-to-mature-after-150-ODIS Raina shows that we are back in the loop... Maybe things won't look that bad because we will play on subcontinental pithes, but the problem areas remain unaddressed!!

But he does perform really well in Asia/Subcontnent pitches so dunno if its a good drop? People below this and above this comment..understand theres never going to be a Sachin not anytime soon. He hasnt really performed it with all the other seniors..infact his strokeplay was fluent and his feet were moving very well throughout the test and the odis just it wasnt getting him through that 30-40 runs phase. As someone pointed out..just people envious of his skills are asking him to give his berth to somebody else.i care less for all these naysayers.. and about VK getting the Vice Captan i hope its only for the ODI as he can learn thing or two from Dhoni and GG remains the ViceCaptain for tests and probly the Captain when Dhoni retires next year or so!!.

Unless India plays the CBS finals and Sachin hits form it is inexplicable how he is in the squad. The explanation for Sehwag's dropping (which is is what it really is) shd apply for Sachin also. Overall it is a spineless selection.

  • CricketMaan on February 29, 2012, 14:07 GMT

If Shewag and Zak are injured how will they play in finals (IF we go thro') and help India to a WIN? Sounds a very poor excuse. And spare a thought for poor Gautam, the reason to elevate Kholi is not bad, but I bet selectors would not have communicated to GG that he has been stripped of VC and is not in the race for C in future. That must be quite demotivating for him after leading India to a 5-0 in his last stint as C and also scoring a match winning 90+ in WC final.

  • on February 29, 2012, 14:01 GMT

Why the Indian Selectors giving more and more chance to Jadeja and Rohit. They are useless. Dhoni is the only reason for retaining them in the Indian Team. If u r giving chances to these peoples why con't u select viru again, becz we r playing in Asian soil so he could be played well. Could have given Sachin rest and picked Sehwag and given a chance with gud opening pair with Gambhir. If India goes final and sehwag plays well then wt the selectors think.

Its a not the right time to give vice-captaincy to Virat Kohli, when you have Gautam Gambhir, who is also doing well. It seems the selectors got carried away with the great knock of virat in the last match. As for Tendulakar is concerned, I think we should leave it entirely to him to decide when he should retire as he would make the right decision soon. Sehwags resting was not good as he would have done very well on flat subcontinent pitches. The youngsters should perform consistently to replace the senior players.

Why drop Viru only??what about he performing well??with the avg of just 20 in recent series with not even a single fifty. Is sachin in Aia Cup just bcoz to get his super century??for how long we will wait for his super century?Time for him to retire atleast from ODIs.Teams win is far beter than personal records........Everybody criticising Jadeja for his inclusion, but what about Raina???How many more chances he need??just scoring 40* runs in last game is enough??Where is Uthappa??

  • on February 29, 2012, 13:56 GMT

same blunder of a mistake.why does R Jadeja gets selected in spite of very poor performances? If the selectors are in search of all-rounders,then pathan brothers are the best candidates.

  • Noboundary on February 29, 2012, 13:52 GMT

Tendulya got picked so that he can make his 100th 100 on the flat wickets of Bangladesh.... it was unfair to drop Viru as he is also a known flat track bully and would have added to his average! Kohli is the right choice as Gauti doesn't seem to have the temperament... I hope VK turns out to be an aggressive captain just like his batting and sledging..... we can easily match the Aussies with VK as captain in future!

Sehwag ommision is illogical... He scored 175 in Bangladesh in opening match of world cup and scored 219 against west indies recently.. if he fails on Australia grounds is not be reason for Asian Grounds. I feel sorry about this.

  • isubhasish on February 29, 2012, 13:49 GMT

Raina, Sachin, Jadeja and Rohit did nothing in CB Series. Forget the record of last match played on a flat pitch in Hobert. Raina, Sachin, Jadeja and Rohit's batting avg. in CB series are as follows: 20, 17, 16, 15. Selectors must look at the averages. They must be dropped for Asia Cup. Biggest mistake again. Also Kohli doesn't deserve the VC post as he is only 23 yr. old.

If India gets selected for finals in Australia, Sehwag is going to give tough time to the selectors scoring 2 centuries. Just once change (dropping Sehwag) in the team. Selectors didn't have to spend a lot of time and money in selecting the same team that underperformed in Australia. Srikanth traveled all over the country to watch domestic cricket before selecting the team. Waste of money

  • TopOrder_ on February 29, 2012, 13:23 GMT

Sewag and other are rested for much bigger and Major series, when india will really need the heroics of these players. They must be 100% fitand being unfit for that series, and for players being injured in that series means less money..u must have gussed it...yeah its IPL im talking bout..

  • Mann123 on February 29, 2012, 13:22 GMT

As expected, selectors do not have the guts to make tough calls. Even when their hand is forced to drop Sehwag based on form, they had to insist that he is 'rested'. Not good signs for Indian cricket. What does he need rest from, sitting in dressing room? Other than increasing the stature of Kohli, the win against Sri Lanka might have done more damage than good to immediate future of Indian Cricket.

From gsr -- the sad thing to be noted here is that the board has confirmed that there is no possibility for india to enter finals. What will they do if india enter finals? Will they drop(?) sehwag in the next match?

  • Al_Bundy1 on February 29, 2012, 13:08 GMT

Why? Why give 10dulkar another chance? That loser has been occupying a permanent seat in the Indian team since God knows when. It's time to groom youngsters. Good thing that other loser (sehwag) was kicked out. BCCI - grow a backbone - drop 10dulkar. He's only playing for himself. Any self respecting sportsman would have dropped himself after the Australia debacle.

  • sarma5 on February 29, 2012, 13:06 GMT

Good that Veeru is dropped from team (oh... ok rested).. It should have been same for Sachin as well. Unless every one anticipating him to hit 100th ton no other reason for him to be in Asian cup Indian Squad. Though he look confident and good for fans he lost the charm-ness and potentiality in recent past. we should learn from Australia who axed ponting for his poor run. I don't understand when we come out of records anticipation and bias.

  • abhi026 on February 29, 2012, 13:06 GMT

Good selection but why making kohli vc when there is gambhir in the team.Gambhir has already said he wants to be caption if he is given oprtunity. This decision (making kohli vc) might hurt gambhir.I think after dhoni ,gambhir is the best option for captaincy, but still good enough decision. Now nothing less than asia cup trophy will make india feel comfortable.Afterall we are defending champion.Selectoer are keeping jadeja on the toe with yusuf.I think this is second time after sl 2009 that india have picked yusuf ,irfan and jadeja in single team.Selectors are keen in searching alrounder that's good.

  • on February 29, 2012, 13:04 GMT

  • Crazy4cricket40 on February 29, 2012, 12:53 GMT

@Zaf100: 110% agree with u. not only that I bet if Sachin had played more overs in last ODI against Srilanka, India would not have got the bonus point to stay alive in the series as we all know he always beocomes slow after 70-75 runs and takes about 45-50 balls to make another 25 runs in order to get his century. India might have won but not with the bonus point with Saching making his 100th century...good he got out. Raina and virat got more overs to fire up..

  • on February 29, 2012, 12:53 GMT

There are enough people around already who think that Sachin Tendulkar plays more for himself and less for the team. Now by opting to play in the Asia Cup a dead tournament against imbecile opposition where he can go on to score a couple of tons more he has basically just played himself into the hands of his detractors. The only saving grace will be if he gets his 100th hundred in the Asia Cup and then retires from ODI's.

Its nice to see Sachin in the one day line up. not because of his 100th 100, but still if he is in the team that itself is a huge boost to Team India. He does not have to prove any thing to any one. No human being alive have the authority and quality to question his class as a pure batsman and as a gentleman on and off the field. He quits whenever he want. atleast we owe him that much as cricket fans. Every one talking about him being the part of team will affect the team's future. let me ask you people one thing, please give me 1 player in whole india to replace sachin tendulkar as a batsman. some say Rehane, but did he prove himself?? One T20 blast will not count for anything. No offence to Rehane and other players, but as long as Sachin is there, you guys should try to replace the other players

Why not Jaffer-bundle of huge skills/experience as the opener. He just hit a century in Vijay Hazare. With openers performing dismally, Jaffer must get a look in especially in Tests. Instead of Rohit Kaif who has consistently been performing in recent Duleep and Vijay Hazare should have got the nod. Kaif also hit a century and few fifties in recent limited overs matches. Kaif is a well deserving guy to fill the middle order slot in ODIs and Tests. He brings great experience, hunger for performance, great energy on field and is a captaincy material which India needs right now. Look what he did with UP in last five-six years. TIME TO MAKE TOUGH DECISIONS. ODI XI should have looked like this...Gambhir, Jaffer, Kohli, Kaif [Captain], Tiwari/Badrinath, Dhoni, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Rahul Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Zaheer/A.Dinda. Test XI should look like...Jaffer, Kohli, Kaif [Captain], Badrinath, Pujara, Saha, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Rahul Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Zaheer/Dinda

  • spinkingKK on February 29, 2012, 12:16 GMT

It is a good selection and almost close to what I predicted. I had Sehwag in my team, but since he has been rested, I can't complain. So, they have been able to retain Jadeja in that spot. I beleive it is a good team. Only thing I don't agree with is making Kohli the vice-captain. It looks like the selectors are trying to mimic what the Australian selectors are doing by making Warner the vice-captain. Warner doesn't even perform consistently to be assured of his spot. In Kohli's case, atleast he is a fantastic performer and possibily a captaincy candidate in the near future. However, it is wrong to promote him infront of Gambhir who has been performing for a very long time and is a senior member. It wouldn't have surprised me if they made Gambhir the captain to have a new direction to the team and just retained Dhoni as the keeper. Good luck India. I hope Irfan, Yousuf and Tiwary gets plenty of chances.

Playing Dinda and Manoj tiwary is so good to see. But I think Umesh Yadav should have been included. He has got the pace better than other seamers. And with Zaheer rested, we will lack the pace. And the combination of Dinda and Yadav would have been good. Jadeja is getting too many chances and not sure why. If jadeja can be selected, why not sehwag ????? Both failed with the bat, bowled well too and jadeja never makes his opprtunity with the bat. With sehwag in sub-continent, he has very good record. If not Sehwag, then Harbhajan should have got the opportunity but Jadeja is not the one to look for. Too many waste of opportunities.

  • vivekg23 on February 29, 2012, 12:09 GMT

Am surprised to see Rohit Sharma included. Agreed he is good - but not that i would give him 77 matches for an average of 33 odd. Rather, it would have been good to try Robin Uthappa, Dinesh Karthik, C. Pujara, Badrinath etc. I am 100% sure that the selectors would not have given so many chances to either of these lads for failures Rohit has had!

  • SagirParkar on February 29, 2012, 12:08 GMT

i really cant believe that so many people are saying "if Sachin wants to play then he should play as long as he can"... do people not realise that one day surely his form will dip, age will take its hold over him and someday he will have to retire.. as it is over the past year we have seen that his form hasnt been exactly spectacular. if his continued selection is in pursuit of that 100, then BCCI is going the wrong way about it. Tendulkar is a legend, he does not have to prove anything to anybody. we all know his worth, his skill, his talent and commitment.. however, Team India comes before all else and that should be the selelctors' priority. i agree that he has the passion to play for the country, well so do i. so does my friend.. so does my neighbour's kid.. does that mean we too should be included in the team ? and good call on getting Kohli to VC, he is a future captain, has the hallmarks of a good leader..and he has the guts to fight too...

  • venky2010 on February 29, 2012, 12:07 GMT

Why 'Rested', when can BCCI/Selectors say 'DROPPED'. Cricket is a professional sport and 'Performance' is the main criteria.

Still going with all three - Jadeja, Rohit & Raina...tough to digest. What should Robin Uthappa do to make a case is mystery.

Sachin is great, but how long..can he drag on...could have given another player performed in domestic circuit a go.

Any way as a normal Indian fan pays money to cable operator and spends tons of time watching our team play..can just pray for some commonsense to be cultivated to the selector's brain.

  • on February 29, 2012, 12:02 GMT

It would have been fantastic if Robin Uthappa gets an opportunity instead of Sachin or Manoj Tiwari or Rohit Sharma or Ravindra Jadeja..he can open the innings as well as Keep the wickets if something happens to Dhoni in between (like an injury or a match ban for slower rate or something of that sort)...Its amazing to see Pathan brothers in team..when they play together, it will be so tough for oppositions as they immensely talented 11 for Asia Cup is..

Sachin/Robin Uthappa Gambhir Kohli Rohit Sharma/ Manoj Tiwari Raina Dhoni Yousuf Pathan/JadejA Pathan Aswin/ Rahul Sharma Praveen Vinay/Dinda

It is very sad to keep playing with R jadeja and Raina. We need to find player who can bat in all type of condition (Subcontinent or bouncy pitches). But our selector are happy to choose same stupid fellow for all type of condition. Next WC is going to be in AUS and NZ..We have ti start preparation on it...It will be now or never situation.

  • Sarangarajan on February 29, 2012, 11:55 GMT

Am surprised that comments about Sachin's ability as a batsman are being raised in view of the ongoing series. If one has seen the batting of all put together in the series, Sachin's batting has been effortless and masterly as long he lasted at the crease. Yes he did not get big score or the elusive hundred yet. That apart, the shots, execution of the strokes and the ease with which he did were splendid for any critic.Yes Virat played a gem of an innings yesterday. But the explosive start given by shewag and Sachin and followed by Gautham were equally very important.Unfortunately we go overboard on one good performance and squeal when a disasterr follows in the cricket field. One innings by Virat made the TV Anchors to shout whether Sachin has been replaced by Virat.Such a disgusting comparison. It does no good either to Sachin or especially to VIRAT.

"I can assure you that nobody has been dropped." This line sums-up the reason behind the poor state of Indian cricket despite of rich resources. Are they not blocking way of a promising young man like Rehane, why have they not picked him? They have picked a team with no regular openers, with this team i am sure Pakistan and Sri Lanka will stream-roll India.

  • premendrasinghal on February 29, 2012, 11:51 GMT

Where is Ajikya Rahane? Why Rohit Sharma? Why Praveen Kumar if he is not fit? Why Ravindra Jadeja if you have taken Yusuf Pathan? Is Virat has been awarded the VC because Gambhir loves Sehvag's ? Definitely Srikanth will say shut up on all these questions.

But he's such an ambitious guy that on the Asian soil, he can FULFILL HIS DREAM TON--against the "minnows" Bangladesh. Sehwag has been dropped there is no two ways about it. Gee if it is this hard for the selectors to admit that sehwag has been dropped and they use the excuse that he has been rested after doing nothing to warrant a rest, hardly spending any time at the crease for 2 months imagine how the selectors are going to let tendulkar down gently when the time comes.

  • ns_krishnan on February 29, 2012, 11:43 GMT

And he has become so obsessed with his 100th 100 that he hopes to get it at least against the lowly-rated BanglaDesh---that is why he has not chosen to opt out ! Why should such a great man descend to such depths? Even if he get his 100th ton, after failures in England and Australia, and after 1 year gap, will this give him any credit? VERY SAD ! If the selectors are honest to themselves, they should drop him after his 100th ton or after the Asia Cup--whichever date occurs first ! And if he does not get his 100th ton even in the Asia Cup, then what ?

And Sehwag is merely rested ! Joke !

Gud move to retain Rohit. Definitely he will come gud in subcontinent. Still we haven't tried much of Manoj Tiwary, then why the need for Yousuf Pathan. Remember earlier he was dropped from team not injured or rested. All this just adds complexity for the touring selectors to pick the XI.

  • sanzen on February 29, 2012, 11:23 GMT

People questioning Sachin's selection should go and check his last 15 ODI innings. You will get the answer. And also people comparing it with Ponting who was dropped, go and check Ponting's last 40 ODI innings versus Sachin's last 40 ODI innings. You will get the answer. And also people who are questioning Rohit Sharma's selection, should know that in his last two ODI series he played was Man of the Series. If you drop a player after just a single series, then in every series there will be almost a new team. People just react on the latest happening. That cannot be helped because people just know to react without analyzing it as a whole .

If you say sachin is not in form. that is agreeable. Dont mis understood his form and age. This is one series he is not in form and it can happen to any cricketer in the world irrespective whether he is 20 or 30. I dont know why fans and average performers during their cricketing period are asking sachin to retire. He knows when to retire. His reflexes are still good. He is the great inspiration for the team. do you ask under performing youngsters to retire from cricket?? if not dont ask sachin to retire. He is uncomparable

Several of my friends are questioning about Rohit Sharma... Why? He has played just 5 matches and of course, did not succeed. There have been players who have played all the 10 matches and failed, yet selected. Don't show discrimination towards just one player. Rohit is undoubtedly talented and of course, he could not adjust his technique to suit Australian pitches. For that matter, not a single Indian batsman could adjust. Why Rohit Sharma is being singled out again and again? In fact, Rohit Should be persisted in every match, as he is a fighter and finisher. Form is temporary but class is permanent

  • on February 29, 2012, 11:14 GMT

Ok, you call it a "rest" or whatever you want but everyone knows thats "dropped". The biggest worry is if Sehwag is dropped, then why Sachin is there. Maybe Sachin did better than Sehwag but everyone knows Sachin cannot play for long time (he is almost at 40) while Sehwag can still play some years if he find his tough quickly. Other than Sachin's inclusion, the team seems quite OK. Lets see how they play against sub continent teams. But after all, if BCCI was honest, they should call it correctly (dropped instead of rest). Anyway, we all know BCCI is not honest, then there is no doubt about it.

  • ListenToMe on February 29, 2012, 11:13 GMT

It is great that Sachin is selected for this subcontinent series. Now he needs to score 7 50s and 1 century in this series and retire from all forms of cricket. This is the right time. Do it Sachin!

Kohli is sure to get his first chance to captain Team India when Dhoni will get another ban for slow over rate...

  • Baundele on February 29, 2012, 11:11 GMT

The irony is Sehwag was going to do well in the Asia cup. His style of batting suits more on Bangladesh pitches. But his bad relationship with the captain has costed his place. I do not understand why Suresh Raina is an automatic pick. He is supposed to be a middle order batsman and his last several innings read 40*, 8, 32, 28, 8, 38, 24, 4, 16, 55, 2, 0, 5. Dhoni tries to save Raina by allowing him to bowl a few overs. But to the practical Raina's bowling is not needed. He should perform with the bat to be in the team. However, being in captain's good book is enough to be an automatic choice.

  • on February 29, 2012, 11:11 GMT

Robin uthappa was better bet than Yusuf Pathan

  • mihaufo on February 29, 2012, 11:11 GMT

Surely this is the last chance for Sachin to make 100 as Bangladesh is also involved. Who is going to open when one of the two (Sachin or Gambhir) fails. I would have liked to see Sachin/Sehwag down the order to bring experience to the middle order. You have 6 middle order batsman for the 3 spots. Anyways, Dhoni's 11 will be: Sachin, Gambhir, Virat, 4. Raina, 5. Rohit, 6. Dhoni, 7. Jadeja (as Dhoni will not drop him), 8. Ashwin, 9. Irfan/Dinda, 10. Praveen, 11. Vinay. My 11, Gambir, sachin, Virat (cannot change his position now), dhoni, Tiwary (givs him a chance), yusuf, jadeja, irfan, rahul, Vinay, Praveen.

Jadeja is good in the sub-continent but Yusuf h so far done no wonders in ODI FORMAT. May be Rahane would have been a good choice.

I guess Sachin Tendulkar selection for Asia cup is only because selectors are not brave enough to tell Sachin that it's time to move on and let some younger player gain valuable experience before the next world cup. Sachin is playing only for the wrong reasons now and there is no gurantee that he will get his hundred international hundred in Asia cup, more chances of injury because of heat and dehydration. Just concentrate on the longer version and hopefully he will reach the milestone. Sachin had ideal time for retirement after the world cup, but I guess he missed the boat and now he will remember as someone who only played for personal glory.

  • ubl2729 on February 29, 2012, 10:58 GMT

what about uthappa?.this is very bad thing he is hit back to back 100 in good strike rate.

  • maddy20 on February 29, 2012, 10:56 GMT

The only changes I would make to the current team is bring in Yusuf for Sehwag. We are better off without Rohit Sharma. Tiwary or Pujara should get a chance instead !

  • vikash_hyd on February 29, 2012, 10:56 GMT

Why sehwag is rested....sachin in squard is a good decision but why sehwag is not in the list......he is a record holder and we know his performance on asian pitches....BAD DECISION.......

  • Chamindra on February 29, 2012, 10:55 GMT

I sincerely hope that Tendulkar gets his century in this tour and retire as soon as possible. I am sick of hearing his name in the Indian team and he is become obsolete everyday just like Jayasuriya for Sri Lanka some time ago. Please Tendulkar just get your century and go. We have seen you enough. Please give others a chance.

  • p77gin on February 29, 2012, 10:54 GMT

Mr Srikanth, if Sehwag has not been dropped, then he "should" be!!! As a selector it is your responsibility to tell him that he is dropped and not rested and he should get back to domestic cricket to sort out his issues and earn his place back!

Classic example of what's plaguing Indian Cricket. Administrators don't have the guts to do the right thing. How can we ever improve?

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:54 GMT

@nasimmushtaque shame on you. how rude people can be...

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:54 GMT

i am not impressed with the team section. the selectors didn't give any importance to domestic cricket i.e vijay hazare trophy. Robin Uthappa and Dinesh Karthik are totally ignored by the selectors. Sehwag is an opener and he is dropped then he should replaced with a opener but selectors choose a player who don't know about consistency in batting, not a good bowler, not a good fielder.

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:52 GMT

@Everyone, the cricketers and the selection panel know more than you. If you are such an expert, you wouldn't be sitting here and commenting on such issues. Please, there are a lot of other things to worry about than who plays in the Asia cup for India. Leave them alone. Its just a game and its not gonna affect the country in any big way.

  • Aaranya on February 29, 2012, 10:52 GMT

Surprised to see comments backing Harbhajan. He was dropped for consistent non-performance and did nothing inbetween to merit even discussion, leave alone selection.

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:50 GMT

People!!! Please get a grip…and stop wasting energy behind Rahane/ harbhajan/ sreesanth/ aaron.. atleast check recent records for them….. all are either in bad touch or not played for long time… all are decent players no doubt but its time they rediscover their form… I think this is good selection….still Uthappa could be there 16th man / Wk/ opener

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:48 GMT

Sachin is also going to face the same situation of what Sanath Jayasooriy of SL faced with poor performance. These legends should bid farewell while they were in good form and good spirit.

  • IvorVaz on February 29, 2012, 10:47 GMT

Despite his 79 runs @ 15.80 from 5 matches, Rohit Sharma's selection is still understandable, given that he was Man of the Series in the two previous ODI tournaments. But Jadeja's selection is inexplicable - he's failed with both bat and ball (3 wickets @ 109.00, and 101 runs @ 16.83, from 8 matches). Perhaps Ajinkya Rahane or Robin Uthappa would've been better picks, especially the latter following his back-to-back tons in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

  • rajbask on February 29, 2012, 10:46 GMT

Excuse everyone who r asking... why Mr. X has been selected, why Mr. Y is not yet dropped, why Mr. Z is still in team, see no one is 100 % perfect. It is life for them ! we cant simply remove anyone from team, they need to be given a fair chance. Surely selectors/captain know the person talents. If they r nt performing after few series, then it is fine to be dropped. Anyone who 100% perfect at their office work can comment. Since you have net access and account in cricinfo, you cant comment anything.

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:46 GMT

people get a grip and check last 10 matches records if ur all claiming for rahane/ aaron/ sreesanth/ harbhajan ..all are either not played recently or in bad touch .... i think Team looks good.... still uthappa could be there as 16th man... plus he is wicketkeeper/ opener.

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:45 GMT

    Its a good team selection of 15 its up-to captain n coach to decide playing 11. considering subcontinent pitches I would suggest 1.Gambhir, 2.Tendulkar, 3.Virat Kohli, 4.Rohit/Manoj, 5.Raina, 6.Dhoni, 7.Yusuf Pathan, 8.R.Ashvin, 9.Irfan Pathan, 10.Praveen Kumar, 11.VInay Kumar/Ashok Dinda

  • Avi56 on February 29, 2012, 10:42 GMT

making virat the VC was a bold move....he is certain to be the captain of india soon...but not so early....Gambhir is the best for the vice captain role...because india never lost when gambhir was the captain....besides i feel gambhir is a more effective captain than sehwag...considering the series that we had against nz in 2010...

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:40 GMT

selectors i dont know what they think where is ROBIN UTTAPPA he deserve a second chance hope he should shift from Karnataka to Tamilnadu to find place till Srikanth there

  • ArvindReddy on February 29, 2012, 10:39 GMT

HI All please stop talking on Raina & Rohit. Virat, Raina & Rohit are the future hope for India in all formats. People who want to send Raina & Rohit out, 1st you should ask Sachin to quit...

  • kimian on February 29, 2012, 10:38 GMT

Good Team......But Why Kohli Has VC?...It is bit pre-mature,Gambhir should have been Vice Captain.

  • Shazzada on February 29, 2012, 10:37 GMT

Good to see sachin in the side....but he should announce his ODI retirement after ASIA cup.....I would love to see PAk & Ind in ASia cup Final..Kohli is a wrong choice for VC. After dhoni only ghambir can lead. And India should find a capt in future as may be after 2015 ghambir & dhoni wouldnt continue and mind u....kohli will never be a good choice as captain due to his attitude.........Yes he is the best ODI batsman,,India have now

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:36 GMT

@Prashant Subedi: Yusuf is better than R jadeja in any format. Good Choice, but why is Ashwin and Rohit Sharma still in the team. Selectors need to be brave and axe players if there performance is not upto the requirements. Where is Uttapa and Rehane......these guys deserve to be in the team

  • Thekick on February 29, 2012, 10:35 GMT

Sachin..again in the team..god alone knows the reason. Hope he doesn't get humiliated in asian conditions too.

  • Aaranya on February 29, 2012, 10:34 GMT

Wish Sachin gets his 100 in this series and leave atleast ODI arena. Really, it is sick and tired to hear / talk / see this 'gentleman cricketer' who always gives the impression of chasing some or other personal goals than 'team cause' though he claim otherwise.

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:34 GMT

I think India should have opted for Saurabh Tiwary or Robin Bist instead of Rohit Sharma.. Paceman I think new guys should have been included to give them the International feel. I think backup keeper would have been important and Uttahapa would have been a good option as an reserve opener and keeper..

  • LindaK on February 29, 2012, 10:34 GMT

Good decision to put Kohli as vice-captain..Will definitely put pressure on Mahi. Cannot get away with casual comments and loose performances hereafter.. Mahi can also get dropped now... Although I love Gambhir, his public comments smack of attitude and indifference to SACHIN.. That he is not vice captain shud be a lesson for him too... Only surprises are inclusion of SIR Ravindra Jadeja and Vinay..

  • Sandeep.M.J.D on February 29, 2012, 10:30 GMT

Wrong selections: Rohit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary If Sehwag had to be dropped then the following also should be dropped: Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Manoj Tiwary, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin. Pathetic selection. This team is baseless. Still I can't see any consistency in the midle order. Yusuf is the only hope apart from the much capable Virat (No 3).

  • itrock on February 29, 2012, 10:29 GMT

Does anyone know what Ravindra Jadeja is??A batsman who can bowl a bit or a bowler who can bat a bit??

  • malikharyani on February 29, 2012, 10:27 GMT

I guess BCCI should have to arrange the series with Zimb so Sachin's can score his 100th century. Secondly Indian players should have to think that IPL is not the standard of cricket but to earn bread and butter.

  • here2rock on February 29, 2012, 10:27 GMT

Why Tendulkar still in the team? Maybe his 100th hundred? There was no reason to make Kohli the vice captain, this won't do any good for the spirit of the team. R Jadeja, Ashwin, Raina also still in the team. All these palyers are tried, tested and failed. Why Yosif Pathan back in the side, he has not done any good on true tracks in the past. Has India run out of talent in the country? Once again no common sense from Srikant and the rest of the selectors.

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:27 GMT

When you are playing against Pakistan and Srilanka in Asia you need to have at least 1 or 2 experienced players in side. Taking Sachin is a wise decision that ways. I hope he completes his 100 of 100 and takes retirement from 50-50 and T20 from here...

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:27 GMT

...(contd) ... Zaheer & Yadav were rested & decision was unanimous. No need for 2nd wckt keeper.. Now Top batsmen forms & fitness were discussed. Sehwag dropped..decision Gambhir & Virat ..both selected due to consistent performance & captaincy materialism... Next Raina's case was discussed.. selectors , Tendulkar & Dhoni wanted him dropped.. but some bcci official vetoed his power to retain raina?? ..Y ..?? Rohit sharma & manoj tiwary .. selected based on Talent & no obvious replacement... Dhoni suggested Uthappa/ Saurav Tiwary ..selectors not interested.. Tendulkar mum ... Allrounder .. Irfan pathan retained.. Jadeja given benefit of doubt & tendulkar suggested he will be well suited for Asia Cup... Yusuf pathan selected as backup allrounder... Bowlers ...Praveen , vinay ..retained. Dinda comes in for Zaheer.. Munaf's name was suggested by Sachin ...but his fitness was doubtfull. Spinners ... Aswin , Rahul sharma retained ..sachin proposed bhajji ..slctrl rejected.

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:27 GMT

selectors and bcci has no guts to get the change. It will be equally challenging and extremely satisfying to see tendulkar fetch for and achieve 100th century in test matches and not ODIs. tendulkar by himself should get off from odis and stick to tests and excel for couple of years before resting his bat.

ODIs should have younger prospects and prodigies should be in and gradually in to tests.

I think rohit and raina got an extention of one more series with manoj and rahane and poojara behind their heels.

surely gambhir should have been preferred to kohli as vice captain. Perhaps they needed a more closer vice captain to dhoni!!!!

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:27 GMT

Sachin has proved that he is different from Don Bradman. had he is place of Don he might have asked one more test to mainatain average of 100. Even a great Indian can be as greedy as Sachin.. for 100 century compromising future of game. Is it greatness of 21st century INDIANS?

  • prathapsj on February 29, 2012, 10:26 GMT

First of all JUNK K.Srikanth should be axed, then comes BCCI chairman Srinivasan ... then the team will become better

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:26 GMT

Its good to see that impressive domestic performances have been rewarded, Yusuf Pathan is rightly back in the team, he is an outright match winner and showed his worth with centuries against New Zealand and SA, he was very unlucky to have been dropped after WI tour where he got to play just a couple of innings and that too just last few overs where he had to go for shots. On turning tracks Yusuf Pathan is a better batsmen than Ravindra Jadeja anyday

  • Aaranya on February 29, 2012, 10:26 GMT

How Jadeja, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina deserves a place in the team for Asia Cup ? How Virat Kohli can be named vice-captain, when Gautam Gambhir is around in the team?. Disgusting really.

  • palla.avinash on February 29, 2012, 10:23 GMT

why is virat kohli made vice captain when htere gambir, who does captaincy better than dhoni some times.he won on nz 5-0,is it a policy to protect dhoni captaincy in that gambir doesn't get his chance or rift between dhoni and sehwag.

Finally and hope so that Tendulkar wish for 100th Hundred will be fulfilled against Bangladesh or may be they can also stop him from scoring a hundred. Tendulkar is chasing records which is a shame and doing no favors to Indian cricket by holding a deserving youngsters place for the future.

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:19 GMT

Ravindra Jadeja is in the scheme of things of MSD. The bottom 5 of team would look like Scenario I - R.Jadeja, R.Ashwin, I.Pathan/P.Kumar, Z.Khan, V.Kumar or less likely Scenario II- R.Ashwin, I.Pathan, Z.Khan, V.Kumar, Rahul Sharma. Top 6 - G.Gambhir, S.Tendulakr,V.Kohli, MSD & 2 out of S.Raina/M.Tiwary/R.G.Sharma. A.Dinda & Y.Pathan will be designated water boys. Frankly if MSD is so sure about R.Jadeja being the player who would send in 10 tight overs of spin and act as 2nd spinner, Y.Pathan cant do the same, then he should be promoted in the batting order to No.4 where he can play without any pressure and make his 20 ball 22 in non powerplay overs or he might even prosper there. No other player seems to be capable of replacing R.Jadeja EXCEPT horror horror R.Ashwin. It has to be kept in mind that I.Pathan is a seam up bowler & Y.Pathan's bowling prowess isnt same as that of R.Jadeja. Scenario II aint that bad an idea MSD!!

  • anaken on February 29, 2012, 10:19 GMT

another chance for sachin to score his 100th ton. I dont understand whats he doing in the team, he should be dropped from the ODI team. I guess the selectors dont have the courage to do it. Yuvraj should be called in as soon as he is fit.

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:19 GMT

For just 3 matches and hope india reach finals then 4th one a selection of 15 member tried and tested squad? Selectors should have picked an young squad under Kohli. No debate of Sachin's selection but they should have given rest to Dhoni, Gambhir and Jadeja. The latter was a flop show so far with the bat and still retained means an in form Ajinkya Rahane has to sit out? Rahane is a promising batsman should have tried ahead of Gambhir. Totally a confused selection for tried and tested lots.

india is going to see what they are going to miss. dropping sehwag is really an outrageous decision.. sehwag being rested for subcontinent series is going to affect india for the forthcoming series. they are not going to get the replacement for Viru even if they try many combinations. Sachin's period is over, and why don't understand why indian selection committee is generous and reluctant to take some bold decisions as taken by ACB (dropping ponting).

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:13 GMT

The Inside story of the selection,,. Selectors together with some BCCI members , Coach Duncan FLetcher , Dhoni , Tendulkar , Team Manager etc had a meeting today over selection. Tendulkar expressed his willingness to continue in ASIA cup looking to score 100 & take the monkey off his back.He may continue through out the ASIA cup & in case Indian Wins or reaches finals, a huge retirement (ODI & T20) ceremony will be organized.Dhoni expressed his future plans & asked selectors to look for his future replacement in captaincy specially in Test, Tendulkar supported him , Three names were discussed-- Ashwin, kohli , gambhir..Dhoni & Tendulkar vouched for Kohli(don't be surprised!), selectors were eager for Ashwin , Some BCCI North zone official for Gambhir..Due to recent indiscipline & team breaking activities(alleged) of Gambhir , his name was dropped from vice-captaincy. Ashwins worth as a Test bowlers & his non-intellectual decision makings in pressure situations went against him...(TBC).

  • Narbavi on February 29, 2012, 10:08 GMT

Its just a three match tournament unless we make it to the finals, so a squad of 15 is a bit big, Rohit Sharma should have been dropped so that Manoj tiwary would have got 3matches to see where he really stands, and both yusuf and jadeja in the squad doesn't make sense coz they are both fighting for no.7slot, should have picked Robin Uthappa instead of one of those two so that we would have also had a back up keeper!!

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:08 GMT

Hope India will play finals now and that gives Sachin an opportunity (min 2 games) to score that 100th 100. In case, he can't score that 100 in Australia now, I pray that he houldn't score that in Asia Cup. If he does so, may be that century would be viewed with utter disrespect

sehwag is not good for overseas tour. but he has been picked for the overseas tour. he is very good player in these subcontinent pitches where the asia cup is going to be conducted. we have remembered exactly one year ago he scored a blistering inning of 175. so he has to be there on these subcontinent pitches. thats what i feel. one more thing umesh yadav shouldn't be rested he just played 2 mnths of cricket. he is gaining the confidence there is no need to rest him. good thing about this selection is they haven't dropped those players who sat on the reserve bench for 1 month like manoj tiwari and rahul sharma. YUSUF PATHAN IN. thats good sign for the team and him aswell.

stage set for 100th 100 now .. Vs Bangla ..

Mr Pawar, one request, Inculde Nepal & Maldives as well in the Asia Cup. "Cricket Outreach" program.. that way we can have 150th 100 and 200th 100 and so on ..

Long live the GOD .. ie. cricket GOD ..

well... its almost the same team playing right now in aussie...just a change here n there coz selectors do want do something as they are also paid off for the job... it will be interesting to see whether these players .. manoj tiwary, rohit sharma, yousuf pathan, rahul sharma, dinda get their chance to perform.... unlucky sehwag need to watch the asia cup on tv... he has to decide what has let him down.. his form or tussle?? he's a devastating cricketer in sub-continent conditions anyways.. should have been included in the side along side tendulkar... overall...good team selection for the defending champions.... good luck team india..............

  • ganirules on February 29, 2012, 10:05 GMT

@ Sauravbutnotganguly, Manoj Tiwary is picked sir, Gambir and sachin are not good partners in start of an innings Gauti's call for short singles wont be good and he will be messy when he plays with sachin, Selection of fast bowelers are not that good both irfan and praveen are more of a swing bowlers and not fast bowlers like Yadav or Aaron, Vinay also an kind of seam bowlers who dont have much pace to trouble batsman line dilshan or others,

Dhoni has lot to think of power play bowling with ashwin and JAdeja both of them will be playing for CSK in IPL, A very good eleven would be

Sachin, Gauti, Kohli Tiwary Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja or yusuf, Ashwin, Rahul, Vinay Praveen or Dinda relaying upon the conditions to bowl,

Any how all the best for the Asia cup, don't take it to the wire and make us to pray for bangladesh to win Sri lanka in the last league match

  • on February 29, 2012, 10:05 GMT

Indian selectors don't have the nerve to drop Tendulkar. There's too much riding on him. On the one hand there are the fans with their irrational, rabid support, despite the fact that at the age of 39, he is a shadow of his former self, with very little international cricket left in him. On the other hand, there are commercial and business interests; the Toshibas, the Avivas, the Boosts need him to continue playing. Have mercy on the future of Indian cricket, Sachin and please retire, at least from ODI's.

If Sehwag can then why not SACHIN??? Let us make this as purely performance driven.

Y Chance is denied for Rahene and Umesh Yadav. they must give chance for Youngsters to develop When compared to Dinda, Umesh is a good bowler.but Yusuf Pathan is a surprise selection too..

  • rkannancrown on February 29, 2012, 10:00 GMT

The retention of Rohit Sharma is absolutely illogical - he is likely to score aginst Bangladesh but will fail against quality attacks. Besides, he has become an average, if not medioicre, fielder. Persisting with Jadeja is good as he brings an overall acceptable package - brilliant fielder, decent batsman and decent bowler. Raina has occassinally done well but his stand out fielding gives him an advantage. The problem with retaining Rohit, Raina & Jadeja is that it means Manoj Tiwari will continue to sit out at a time when he should be given opportunities to do more.

  • leleraja on February 29, 2012, 9:59 GMT

Kudos to the selectors! My team would be Sachin, Gambhir, Kohli, Raina, Tiwari, Dhoni, Yusuf, Irfan, Rahul Sharma, Praveen & Dinda.

  • Romenevans on February 29, 2012, 9:58 GMT

Rohit Sharma again? Oh Boy! He is the most over rated and over hyped cricketer i have ever seen. Talent Talent....and Talent, where the hell is performance? Why not Photo Frame His "Talent" and have in Pavilions? He has already played 75+ ODI's and he is still young in the team? LOL! what happened to Ajinkya Rahane? He was awesome against England, where did he go all of a sudden? LOL! Poor guy, got smacked with BCCI politics.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:58 GMT

Why the axe has fallen on Sehwag only?It shows that their is a rift between him and skipper. The selectors should have selected the best side for the asia cup.Sehwag did not perform as per expectation on this tour but he has given tremendous performance prior to this tour.Merely failing in one series does not mean that his days are over.He is the most fearsome batsman in today,s cricket world and what he had acheived would be difficult for other players to get nearby his records. The resting or expulsion may lead to his premature retirement from cricket which will be the saddest day in cricket world. A player of Sehwag's callibre seldom comes and we must give due and appropriate respect to this genious.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:58 GMT

Srange to see Raina still in team, Selector is very well aware that he will never succeed in Australia but Doni knows that he will cash easy opportunity in Asia Cup. So again given a chance at the cost of more talented youngster waiting without success. Hell with this selectors?

Good to see virat made as vice captain, he is captain in making, i think he should be made full time captain atleast one year before the 2015 world cup. Well whole team looks good except there should be a place for munaf patel and pragyan ojha, these two player are very good team players and their contribution to the inidan cricket is often neglected.

  • dork29 on February 29, 2012, 9:54 GMT

One thing I am unable to understand is this peculiar habit of announcing a team while a tournament is going on.I am not sure what the selectors/BCCI is trying to prove. This creates unncessary confusion and lack of motivation to players. Yesterday, the team punched beyond its height in chasing down a mammoth total with time and more to spare. The contribution of Sehwag is not negligible. Today you drop him. If we make it to teh finals, Dhoni may decide to play him. What motivation will Sehwag have to perform,, if he already knows he is dropped/axed? This is fair neither to the captain nor the player. Coming to the selections itself, Rohit and Raina deserve a chance. But Jadeja should have been dropped. He is not international class. Sehwag axing, he had it coming. What is disappointing is not that he is getting a cheap score. It is his attitude. No sincerity, no application, no sobriety. he does not perform and thinks he is God - that will not work.

  • Romenevans on February 29, 2012, 9:54 GMT

  • SamRoy on February 29, 2012, 9:51 GMT

Why do selectors keep on ignoring Abu Nechim? Just because there has been no former international cricketer from Assam and nobody to pursue his cause. He is probably the second best young fast bowler in the country after Umesh Yadav and Umesh can only be used in tests. And Yusuf Pathan again? Ravindra Jadeja again? If both play I want India to lose.

    Hi All,

First of all I would like to appreciate the decision of selectors for promoting virat kohli as vice captain. This guy deserves it completely. Atleast the selectors took one wise decision of grooming the best youngster for the future captaincy.

Second point is they selected the domestic performers yusuf and ashok dinda which is very gud. Yusuf is the biggest hitter, we can afford to give him some chances as we are giving it to raina and rohit sharma.

I dont see any point in choosing sachin for the ODIs, it means the selectors does not have the guts to drop or rest sachin..which is really very bad thing. Sachin should atleast realize it now and retire from ODIs after Asia cup.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:48 GMT

  • anulovesu on February 29, 2012, 9:45 GMT

Why Virat has been selected as VC, instead of Gambhir? He has a very good track record as VC. Why rohit sharma is there, He was also one of the worst performer in CB series... even sehwag played better than him....

  • arup_g on February 29, 2012, 9:44 GMT

I hate the fact that they write 'Sehwag has been rested'!! He has been dropped, so why can it not be openly admitted? This is Sachin's final chance for sure! If he doesn't score heavily, in sub continent conditions, then this surely should be time for retirement. Kohli being promoted as VC is the right move for a rising superstar. My XI would be - Sachin, Gambhir, Kohli, Rohit, Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja, Irfan, Ashwin, Praveen, Vinay.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:44 GMT

if we talk about Tendulker, then we say he is a legend but if we comparison b/tTendulkar with Sehwag, So there is a huge difference b/t them, Sehwag is t20 and 50 overs Game Specialist, rather then Tendulker. bcz Tendulker age is so close to retirement, he should concentrate on played Cricket but only Test not 50 or t20 cricket bcz these format of cricket is now 2 fast/quick. Tendulker must empty there seat with Happiness for any other new Indian Player who can play 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Very good selection indeed and no need to make much changes just considering the recent form.Surely our players can come back strong soon. This is the fisrt time in decades where the entire batsmen failed which will not happen very often and its bad luck too. All we need to work is preparing fast pitches in india too which will give room for our players to go strong in overseas. One more area we need to concentrate is on bowling we don't have good bowlers at alllllll. No consistent bowlers at allll

I wish Yadav had not been rested, would have been nice for him to experience the Ind-Pak intensity. Also, where is Munaf? Glad to see Yusuf Pathan - hope he gets a few games. I really hope SRT can make is century and then bow out.

  • ShankarKR on February 29, 2012, 9:34 GMT

It is unfair to drop Harbhajan singh again. I think India performed badly in bowling in Aussie series only due to absence of Harbhajan singh.

  • ArvindReddy on February 29, 2012, 9:34 GMT

Where is Rahane..? He gets the place once Sachin retire. So Rahane don't expect the place in national team...

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:34 GMT

You people should grow up. You can't just under estimate a player like Rohit for just not doing well in one series. If thats the point, then Raina should also be dropped

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:34 GMT

Out of form Sehwag is 100% better than Ravindra Jadeja.Deserving Promotion for Virat Kohli......................great work by selectors as they named VIRAT KOHLI as vice-captain.........what the hell ravindra jadeja is doing in team????????Nice to see Pathan brothers back together after such along time....Good to see teams playing with brothers in the team 1)India : Pathan Brothers

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:33 GMT

This selection is nothing new.... Same old puppets are rotated... So one good performance by Raina, and he is back in the squad... Yes, Kohli did shine yesterday, but again, there is Gambhir who has equally performed consistently in the tri-series... He should have been named as the vice-captain... Sehwag was getting tired and yes we can't deny the IPL is round the corner, so with that in mind, Selectors gave Sehwag the well deserved rest (dropped)... On a serious note, it is high time to select new Selectors.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:33 GMT

@Leelakrishna ... u r ryt... he has still 4-5yrs of cricket left in him, but not in international matches.. but in ranji n other domestic cricket... his international career is almost over nw.

  • gimme-a-greentop on February 29, 2012, 9:33 GMT left out the Morkels for SA in your list of brothers! But it is interesting to see 5 different countries with a set of brothers in the team...

why not varun Aaron is in d squad????

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:32 GMT

Guys dhoni is rested. Gambhir is captain and kohli is vice captain. Dont start feeling sorry for gambhir

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:32 GMT

Why Dhoni not been rested? They can put Gauti as captain & Virat as a VC. Although Virat is a captain material no doubt. Not because his century but because his approach on the pitch.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:32 GMT

Why Ravindra jadeja again n again..what he is done so special that every time he gt selected..when we already have pathan brothers in team as allrounder..Rahane or uthappa should be picked instead..

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:32 GMT

Why is 'His Majesty' Ravindra Jadeja in the team? His performances are at best as good as Sehwag's and probably worse. If Sehwag is to be dropped, then Jadeja also has to be.

  • Sano27 on February 29, 2012, 9:31 GMT

Sachin & Dhoni should have to be rested....although this is a well balanced team ,D.Karthik & R.Uthappa needs to be in this team as both were so consistent in the Vijay Hazare trophy...great to see Kohli as vice-captain....he's the real man to succeed Dhoni !

  • RohitGullu on February 29, 2012, 9:31 GMT

I strongly believe that its Sachin's last chance in ODI to make 100th 100. Selectors might have informed him. Sehwag is just rested from this tournament to avoid those meaningless rotations of openers. He will be back after this tounament in place of Sachin.

  • umm09 on February 29, 2012, 9:30 GMT

Good team, let's give one more chance to Sachin for 100th century in international cricket. Selectors should have selected Robin Uttappa as a backup wicket keeper and opener.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:30 GMT

Yusuf Pathan is god selection. Hen should give chance on sub continent pitches and Sachin should be rested instead of Sewagh

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:30 GMT

What rubbish selection yar! If Sehwag deserved axing than Rohit, Raina & Jadeja should have been dropped before him.

  • trueindian on February 29, 2012, 9:30 GMT

ohhh no... Sehwag has paid the price of being a little talkative while Jadeja has gone scot-free for his indifferent form with the bat. What a different yardstick for each individual . This team looks as if it is hand-picked as one feels and not according to the merits. Labelling it is the best squad is a big shame to all of those who are trying very hard to get into the Indian team but due to the favouritism of MS Dhoni, does not get entry into the squad. Sachin, plz go away and let others have some time out there in the middle. You are wasting your time and others patience

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:29 GMT

What???? Yusuf & Dinda?? Omg, no one can understand BCCI's selection process. Seriously, we need researchers in this field.

Just Hope Tiwary gets to play more often than Jaddu :)

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:27 GMT

ravindra jadeja is a picked only because of the support of msd..he is the one who picks him in all the games even though he is not performing well..

  • Satv007 on February 29, 2012, 9:27 GMT

I was expecting Rahane to replace Sehwag. Poor chap...The team looks very good. Where is Arum Aaron? Is he still injured?

  • rishab.cricfever on February 29, 2012, 9:27 GMT

my best 11 from the AVAILABLE squad : Sachin, Gambhir, Kohli, Manoj Tiwari, Raina, Dhoni, Pathan, Ashwin, PK, Rahul Sharma, Vinay Kumar This way we can have 5 specialist bowlers and Pathan and Ashwin be expected to do an allrounder's job...anyways Pathan is a better option than Jadeja

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:27 GMT

Sehwag rested or dropped ?? Dont care about it, dropping is only for regaining form. Virat kohli as VC, now clearly the selectors named the NEXT CAPTAIN.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:27 GMT

I'm very happy for comeback in Dhoni under the team. We are really missed in this game the viru & zaheer . Sachin ton the century in this series we are pray to god.Welcome return Yusuf & Dinda.Already a good form of gives in virat & raina. The squad bowlers taken the new changes in our bowling style in Bangladesh pitch. So all are indians waiting for this asia cup in India put awake that time.Sachin should be retired after scoring 100th ton in order to make the way for youngsters. "ALL THE BEST"

  • ThatzMyView on February 29, 2012, 9:25 GMT

We can now expect Sachin to get 100th ton, against Bangladesh, but it would be meaningless to get it against such a bad opposition, even wriddhiman saha can knock a ton against Bangladesh at sub-continental dead pitches..

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:25 GMT

why are Raina and Jadeja not was good time to include Robin Uthappa and Abishek Nayar in the team !!

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:25 GMT

Why have they dropped manoj tiwary?..they should haverested seniors like sachin and dhoni...few more youngsters should have been picked...this is ridiculous!!..very short-sighted selection.....umesh yadav too should have been retained..!!

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:25 GMT

GREAT team nice team-selection.happy to see virat as VICE CAPTAIN. but could have better bowling option. in place in DINDA we can have some better name like MUnaf PAtel the unsung hero of worldcup....robin Uttahpa coulb be in squad as opener. but best team probably. hope that manoj tiwari will get chance this time.

  • VJ.Harry on February 29, 2012, 9:25 GMT

Looks like okie kinda squad...Sehwag has been RESTED nice way to butter the words DROPPED...I cant believe Jadeja has been picked ahead of Sehwag considering his poor run in the CB series..Lets not forget the fact that the chase of 321 of 40 was helped by the explosive start provided the Sachin and Sehwag...You have the explosive batsmen in your lineup and it will definitely add some psychological adv over the opponent...You are damn lucky Ravindra......

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:25 GMT

Sachin & Sehwag both don't deserve in the team with current form. why Sehwag only?

  • Rahul_78 on February 29, 2012, 9:24 GMT

Why oh Sachin why? 100th 100 is just a number. You are the greatest batsmen India has ever produced without a shadow of doubt. You dont need to prove it to anyone with one more century. It would have been better if you have waited till next test match to play for India again instead of blocking the path of youngster waiting in the wings. What is left there to achieve in ODI's so that you have decided to continue in inconsequential tournament played in Bangladesh. God forbid if you score a ton against Bangla boys things are not going to be easy for your. I dont blame selectors as nobody drops GOD from the Indian team.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:24 GMT

Very good selection, indeed! Particularly relieved to know that Sehwag & Zaheer are "rested". Sachin is in from, despite not making big scores down under, for some reason or the other, including tough luck! Let me make it very clear. My happiness about Sachin's inclusion is nothing to do with his "missing 100". It is based on purely merits. He will also be a guiding light for the youngsters -- they all look up towards him and his suggestions.Very happy to see that both Irfan & Dinda are also in the team.

  • Raghu003 on February 29, 2012, 9:23 GMT

Good to know Sachin got selected... Age is no bar... He is still playing well... Best of luck Team India.. :)

  • meastrostroke on February 29, 2012, 9:22 GMT

what is the point in announcing the squad in between series. This could cost the series. If sehwag is dropped why they dint dropped sir ravindra jadeja. He has no reputation like sehwag, yet he is still in the odi squad. Having Ash, yusuf and pathan it makes no sense in keeping jadeja. He is no yuvi. Not pleased with vice-captaincy giving to virat . Does srikkant want punter in making. What happened to raina. Dhoni spoiled his career. Raina was at top form when he batted at first down. He has then big hitting skills. Dhoni made him to bat down the order and ruined his batting skills. Raina is much matured, temparament than Kholi. Surprised to see dinda from no-where. He is test material for sure. He will leak 7runs p.o like Umesh. praveen, vinay, pathan of same pace is unidirectional. Pleased with persisting with Rahul rohit and raina.

  • A.Ak on February 29, 2012, 9:22 GMT

Y Pathan is a good pick, considering the conditions and opponent's heavy spin attack. Shewag getting form is just a matter of time. He could get that even in the CB series finals if India qualifies.

  • Mumbaikar11 on February 29, 2012, 9:22 GMT

Team OK but Virat as VC when Gambhir is playing? What message its sending to GG? Score one match winning 100 and get back Vice-captaincy??

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:22 GMT

Yusuf Pathan makes one century. He comes back. Robin Uthappa makes 2 centuries back-to-back ignored. He can replace Raina as a finisher. He can play the fast bowlers and spinners as well, if not better than Raina. He is definitely not a bad fielder. But yesterdays innings has sealed Raina's place for the next two years on the Indian subcontinent. And Jadeja? Really? The only impact he can have on a team is negative impact.

  • kamriyas on February 29, 2012, 9:22 GMT

Jadeja still in the team. It is unacceptable. Rohit Sharma is acceptable as he is very good in the sub-continent but why Jadeja?? Come on Dhoni!! What you are getting from him to include him in the team!! This is definitely Dhoni's pressure to include Jadeja. With Shewag out, Uthappa would have been a great choice instead of Jadeja. It looks like selectors wanted Yusuf Pathan, but Dhoni was adamant about Jadeja, thats why both are in the squad and I am sure Jadeja will surely make in to the final 11 in all matches no matter if he performs or not. I think 2 among Yusuf, Raina, Rohit will play at No.5. Jadeja to get his spot at No.7 as always.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:22 GMT

Raina, Jadeja also deserve to get dropped ... again chennai super kings selection committe meeting continued in BCCI after IPL 5 auction ..

  • rishab.cricfever on February 29, 2012, 9:21 GMT

y not pick aaron and give umesh an extended run..after all he was the " find of the tour" as stated recently by gambhir in a press conference..dis way dey will end up hampering his self confidence..y pick dinda and yousuf..both proven failures !! how many more chances does rohit deserve..he has got exceptional talent but poor temperament..but high time Rahul Sharma shud be a part of playing 11 instead of useless Sir Ravinder Jadeja (d recent IPL millionaire)

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:21 GMT

Praveen, Vinay, Irfan, Dinda are all medium pacers, a quickie like Umesh would have been good. Dhoni could have been rested too. Jadeja should have been dropped. And if Sachin doesn't get his 100th 100 in the Asia Cup, he should also start thinking about his ODI future. His on and off availability doesn't help anyone. An extra opener like Rahane could have been picked instead of Jadeja or one of the medium pacers.

  • narvan on February 29, 2012, 9:21 GMT

  • chilled_avenger on February 29, 2012, 9:20 GMT

I am glad that Sehwag is not picked which should be a warning for him that he can't go around under-performing and hoping to get selected continuously! But Selectors should have done that for the CB Series only since it is known that though he performs very badly in bowler-friendly overseas conditions,he can be handy in he batting-friendly pitches of Subcontinent. One more question is that what if India reaches the CB Series Final and Sehwag scores a century or two in the finals(which is pretty unlikely on his current form)? Although I never thought he would be dropped only 4-5 ODIs after he scored that 219,but that's just how it goes,I guess!

  • shahid_0070 on February 29, 2012, 9:20 GMT

I dont understand why they are picking rohit sharma and ravindra jadeja for asia cup? These players given number of chances and failed to utilise. If the selectors given atleast one more chance to karthik, uthappa ,M tiwary they would utilised and performed well. I am confident that these players( karthik, uthappa ,M tiwary) perform well compared to rohit sharma and ravindra jadeja. First remove srikanth as selector bcoz until he is a selector these players ( karthik, uthappa ,M tiwary) wont get chance again to play for India.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:20 GMT

  • bighit14 on February 29, 2012, 9:20 GMT

Good for Sehwag. Clear message that one cannot stay in the team just based on the records. He needs to find his form back and earn his place back into the side (Atleast the test side).

  • Dilruksh on February 29, 2012, 9:20 GMT

  • shahrukhalam on February 29, 2012, 9:20 GMT

Thats a sad news early morning Sehwag is dropped. The wickets in Bangladesh are flat n nice suits sehwag really well but I dont know why they dropped him. My advise to india is change their selection panel. The selectors should know the players weakness and strengths. Sehwag always played well on Asian wickets.

I think they have got it all wrong. U Yadev should have been in the team. The bowling looks weak. Secondly on sub continent pitches sehwag could have been great asset for team India. I don't find this team very strong honestly speaking.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:20 GMT

It's a chance given to complete 100th 100 for Sachin. Specially against Bangladesh. Better he has to announce his retirement from ODI's after Asia cup.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:20 GMT

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ravindra Jadeja is picked again. Really failed to understand the love between Selectors and Jadeja. Even after so pathetic performances he is been picked up in the squad again and again. Neither a good bowler nor a batsman. Whats the utility? Yusuf and Manoj are the right replacements for him. Lets see if Dhoni chose Pathan or still continue with Pathetic Jadeja.

Please Dhoni take suggestions of Sachin Tendulkar, gambhir, Kholi. & Raina and most inportant Coach Mr. Duncan Flecther for selection.

  • rakabhai on February 29, 2012, 9:19 GMT

There are still millions of indian cricket fans who turn off the TV/radio for a while once Tendulkar is out. I am sure some of those fans are from selectors itself & also their family members. There is a famous dialog in bollywood " gabbar ko sirf gabbar hi maar sakta hain" what is means that, as long as Tendulkar wants to play, he will play & he should play. He has gone beyond the day to day performance & metrics issues.

I am same age as Tendulkar & following him since his first game in school, people disagree with me means they either do not understand his fame or indian cricket.

Show this kind of aggression during the test team selection, not in the ODI format..!!!

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:14 GMT

    1)India : Pathan Brothers 2)Australia : Hussey Brothers 3) New Zealand : Mc.Cullum brothers 4) Pakistan : Akmal Brothers

  • maddy8290 on February 29, 2012, 9:14 GMT

plzz include payers like bisht, mandeep singh, manish pandey why roht and raina in the team if fielding is the basis these guys are not legging too far beyond them

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:14 GMT

You cannot believe that this is considered "breaking news". It's just a team selection but one supposes that as long as Tendulkar is still playing for India, team India will come second.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:13 GMT

pragyan ojha should have been bought in the sit, ashwin 2 be rested. left of the squad is a god one.

  • venkat4018 on February 29, 2012, 9:13 GMT

Deserving Promotion for Virat Kohli!!!!! Nobody can think Sewag can take his place for granted. Since we miss the experience of Zaheer Khan, agarkar / nehra could have been picked as a senior. Also Uthappa deserved place after consistent performance in Vijay Hazare Trophy. Anyways bold move to drop sewag....

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:13 GMT

    Dear Mr. Shrikant

As you are chief selector of India team can you please explain to whole India that why you had not picked pu inform Robbin Uttapa of karnataka as he is a explosive batsmen. why are you wasting his carrier !!! come grow up and give him another chance to shoe his ablities and skills rather then picking Rohit Sharma who is utter waste in this current side....

    Thanks & regards

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:13 GMT

Expected Team. Virat is for sure Future Captain....

  • sachin_agarwal_MREC on February 29, 2012, 9:13 GMT

I am a die - hard fan of Indian Cricket. My prayers have been answered - i dont want a Sehwag who plays once every year - i want a young, hungry player. Down with Sehwag ! Up with Krish Srikanth for dropping him. Kris- you won us the ODI WC. Now, please dont be afraid of anything else - do something you always wanted to do - make Indian team truely world class. I know this is easier said then done, when i dont have any money at stake, but i hope you, of all the person - who faced Imran Khan, Akram, etc, - take the route of making and enabling Indian team something we, me, can die for. Kudos again for dropping Sehwag !

  • satish619chandar on February 29, 2012, 9:12 GMT

Pretty needless for Sachin to play.. May be Viru could have played but surely no point in Sachin playing a tournament.. Godo to see Dinda in as his form in domestic was good.. Dhoni could have done with some rest after all the drying throughout the summer.. Surprised not to see M Tiwary and Rahane out of squad.. One of them could have been retained at the expense of Sachin.. Really if Sachin scores the 100th 100 in Asia cup and that too against BD(No offense on BD here), it will sound more like in desperation only..

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:12 GMT

Yes............. Sachin is there means interest will be there in Asia cup. Now most of people will watch this.

  • rajacricket on February 29, 2012, 9:12 GMT

Where is manoj tiwary?,why he is dropped ?what is jadeja doing in the team?

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:11 GMT

where is manoj tiwary poor guy hasn't got any chance in ongoing series and now dropped.

  • IndranilChoudhury on February 29, 2012, 9:11 GMT

What exactly did Manoj Tiwary do from the time he was picked for the current ODI series and now, for him to be dropped for the Asia Cup?

  • CricketMaan on February 29, 2012, 9:11 GMT

Did they speak to Umesh Yadav and tell him he is being rested and not dropped, poor chap he will confused if not communicated well and might loose his confidence.

  • Mukundan on February 29, 2012, 9:11 GMT

Looks like Sehwag is dropped for bad form with his mouth than with his bat. If with bat, then Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina should also have been dropped. I wish to see Yusuf Pathan play the first few matches ahead of Jadeja. Jadeja is a bits and price cricketer and cannot be called an all-rounder. Also the fast bowling dept looks weak. Good that Dinda is selected... some reward for consistency in domestic circuit. I wish Sachin scores 100th 100, India win Asia Cup and Sachin calls it quits in ODI. We have to plan for WC 2015 and definitely a 42 year old Sachin would not be on that flight to Aus/NZ. Hope Sehwag shows his form in IPL and comes back to the ODI team. All the best India... sub-continent pitch and sub-continent teams. No excuse can be entertained this time.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:11 GMT

Good move to keep Sachin....the last ODI showed that the right mix of youngsters and seniors brings the desired results. Yusuf Pathan is a better option than Jadeja until Yuvraj Singh returns.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:11 GMT

hahaha BCCI kidding...... m nt satisfied with indian team :)

  • amolakkalra on February 29, 2012, 9:11 GMT

great selection but i do not think sachin deserves a place as he played as badly as sehwag.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:11 GMT

If Rohit can be given these many chances, Why not Uthappa?? pity him...

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:11 GMT

maybe he is not in great touch need some rest

  • shikhargupta on February 29, 2012, 9:11 GMT

sehwag is good in subcontinent conditions. selectors should have given him chance since he is the highest scorer in ODI

  • romeomustdie on February 29, 2012, 9:11 GMT

Rohit sharma, Suresh Raina, Jadeja in!!! give me a break.. I wonder wat rahane, uthappa has to do to get into the team.. need to play for CSK atleast..

Finally.. Sachin will have a chance to score his 100th century against Bangladesh.. thank god.. lol

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:11 GMT

Tendulkar should have been dropped, Ashwin shoud be dropped. Get bhajji back

  • busbybabe on February 29, 2012, 9:10 GMT

Why no Manoj Tiwary - what has he done wrong - no chance to play either in the CB Series or at home in the domestic comps - since he was busy carrying the drinks .... poor guy .. he doesn't deserve to be dropped ..

  • ksgcha on February 29, 2012, 9:09 GMT

is this the future team keeping in mind the 2015 WC?? it seems as though it is a conscious effort that has been made to keep more or less the same side and let the awfully out of form players get some runs so that that will put an end to all controversies becoz what follows after the Asia Cup is the MOST IMPORTANT TOURNAMENT OF THE YEAR FOR THE INDIANS-----THE IPL and by that time all the fans and followers will forget what happened to the CHAMPION TEAM in England and Australia. No Rahane and Manoj Tiwary still in the team???? when will these players get a call and by doing what??????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • dnmrao on February 29, 2012, 9:09 GMT

I don't understand why Manoj Tiwari never gets chance even in Bangladesh, and Ravi Jadeja always gets chance in spite of his consistent failures. Is it because he is a member of CSK owned by BCCI chairman?

  • Bravvooo on February 29, 2012, 9:09 GMT

what wrong has manoj tiwary done?scored a 100 in his last outing & not getting another game after that...and raina continuesto play...unbledibelivable...

  • CricketMaan on February 29, 2012, 9:09 GMT

Nonsense. Viru is match winner on sub continent pitches and he was the captain against Windies, so in one series he has gone from Captain, double centurion to BAD..Also suddenly Virat is VC, why cant they be consistent and let Gauti handle the VC. There was Suresh Raina last year who captained in Zim and Windies..why so much inconsistency..its confusing.

  • on February 29, 2012, 9:09 GMT

What V. Kohli vice-captain? Effect of his winning innings for sure but is it going to be a reward or burden for the young man?
