Shaminda Eranga, the fast-bowling allrounder, has been picked to replace the injured Angelo Mathews in the Sri Lanka squad currently playing in the Asia Cup.

Ashantha de Mel, Sri Lanka's chairman of selectors, said that Eranga was picked because the team needed to bolster its rank of fast bowlers for the rest of the tournament. "Lasith Malinga is nursing a groin strain and he was left out of the first match against India," De Mel said. "He will most probably play in tomorrow's game against Pakistan, We thought Eranga, who has recovered from his shoulder injury, would be useful because he can bat as well."

Eranga made his Test debut against Australia at the SSC last year, taking 4 for 65. He has scored a first-class hundred and four half-centuries in his 41-match career. Eranga was originally named in Sri Lanka's Test squad to play Pakistan in the UAE last year, but had to withdraw with a shoulder injury to his right arm.

Apart from Mathews, who has been ruled out with a calf muscle injury, Sri Lanka have also lost the services of another fast bowling all-rounder, Thisara Perera, who picked up a back injury during the triangular one-day series in Australia that also featured India.

Eranga has been an impressive bowler. However, I remember there was a very impressive SL bowler by name Amerasinghe in the 2008 CB series played in Australia. Whatever happened to him? Can my SL friends here throw some light?

excellent selection, eranga is our next more talented bowler behind the mop, he has swing, line and length and he's only going to get better, u can't be a bad bowler, in fact ur a good one if u can get ponting and clarke on debut, u may remember. very nervous about today's game

As SL Were looking for pace bowling option with some batting abilities, Eranga can fit in it decently.. He had a good debut series.. They would have been tempted to include in Dhammika.. He showed good temperament in Australia.. @JustIPL : Really?? Did SL brush aside India in CB series?

@LuckyLukcy.Know something? Jeewan is injured and hasen't played any cricket for 2 or so months. Suraj is available though.

What we are missing is a good spin bawling allrounder. replace Kapugedara with Jeewan Mendis. And swop Prasanna with Randiv. Selecters should know this is subcontinent for crist shake

its good move. sl should drop kapugedara, lakmal, and replace eranga and malinga for the playing 11.And promot maharoof in to no.7 to bat he can bat through the innings

@JustIPL Brushing aside? We have beaten SL 3-1 since worldcup. And Malinga was "rested" because the Lankans are afriad that a 23 year old will rip his bowling to shreds. Remember Malinga does not play tests. So thats the only possible reason. Me thinks Maling will play against Pak tomorrow.

Good decision has taken by SL selectors to bring Shaminda Eranga, as a replacement for Angel.SL should play all the time with confidence. pls pls SL play with confidence.

finally a good thing...i think Randiv should be in too.he's taking wickets as well.took 11 wickets in last game....selectors should do something for kapugedara ...we are wasting such a talent in down the order....will be more handy in top of the order ...if mahela, sanga and dilshan is not gonna play for next world cup,why cant we give some rest for one of them and ask youngster to bat @ top ..kapu will good choice for #3 or #4 ....we just wasting him as we did since long time ...

A good move! But on the other hand we need more of a quality batting All rounder to replace Mathews.but Shaminda Eranga is more of a bowler who can bat also.but he is a very impressive bowler.so its good to have him.i guess this more of covering both Malinga n Mathews.

SL are the favorites but absence of Malinga and Mathews allowed kohli and gambhir to prosper. SL should believe that they have done a marvellous job in Australia by brushing aside the so called world cup final winners. Pakistan batting is not raliable and that makes both SL and India play final which cricket fans want SL to win. So come on SL.

No matter who is picked, for god's sake don't allow kapugedara to play.even bring a SL women team member, she will play much much better cricket sensibly than kapugedara

I would have rather liked to see Nuwan pradeep in the squad. He seemed to be the most talented srilankan bowler after Malinga. Anyhow quite ridiculous of cricinfo calling an guy whose ListA average being 18 as an Allrounder.
