Bangladesh v Pakistan, Asia Cup final, Mirpur March 21, 2012

Bangladesh's chance for unprecedented glory

Match facts

March 22, 2012
Start time 1400 (0800 GMT)

Big Picture

Just how momentous is Bangladesh's passage to the Asia Cup final? Decide for yourself after reading these figures. In nine previous tournaments, Bangladesh had played 29 matches and won two, against Hong Kong and UAE. Out of three games this time, they have won two, against World Cup 2011 finalists India and Sri Lanka, and lost a close match to Pakistan.

For Bangladesh's tireless supporters, starved of success but never lacking in passion, this is like finding an oasis in a desert. A sea of the darker shade of green will be cheering every run that Bangladesh score tomorrow and every Pakistan wicket that falls. Victory won't be demanded, though; an appearance in the final is already a windfall for the fan.

How will the Bangladesh players approach this game, probably the biggest in their careers so far? Apart from blanking New Zealand some time ago at home, this is the first time they have put together consistently solid performances for three games running against world-class opposition. Will the fourth time prove to be too much? Will the pressure of a final, something they have hardly experienced, restrict the freedom with which they bat? Will their bowling and fielding be able to hold together?

Whatever be the result, Bangladesh's surge to the final holds the promise of another close match. They will fight; if they go down, they will still be heroes. If they win, they'll become part of folklore in the years to come. Either way, a bit of history has already been created.

While tomorrow's contest pales before the fervour an India-Pakistan final would have generated, Pakistan won't mind running into Bangladesh. They have relied on their bowling, as they often do, for getting them to the final. The one time their batting appeared to have almost won a game for them, they ran into Virat Kohli.

Pakistan have underperformed in the Asia Cup, winning it only once compared to the four titles each won by India and Sri Lanka. A second title beckons tomorrow, unless Bangladesh can ride on the passion and momentum and play beyond themselves again.

Form guide

Bangladesh: WWLLL (most recent first)
Pakistan: LWWLL

In the spotlight

Had Shakib Al Hasan been playing for some of the bigger Test sides, he would have been given a lot more respect than he gets at present. He averages 54.50 with the bat and 22.29 with the ball in ODI wins. He carries the expectations of Bangladesh fans lightly and, more often than not, puts in a telling contribution. He was Man of the Match in the hosts' wins over India and Sri Lanka and would have got the award against Pakistan had the Bangladesh lower order not collapsed around him. The hosts have found Nasir Hossain, but for the moment, as Shakib goes, so do Bangladesh.

Umar Gul helped Pakistan avoid defeat against Bangladesh with a three-wicket burst that included the wickets of Nasir and Shakib. One new ball or two, Gul has found reverse swing. When asked how he was getting such movement with a lush green outfield in Mirpur, he pointed to the dry-looking square. Bangladesh were able to survive the threat of Lasith Malinga on Tuesday. Gul will come hard at them tomorrow, especially after going for runs against India.

Team news

Nazmul Hossain took three wickets against Sri Lanka on his comeback in place of the injured Shafiul Islam. Bangladesh could go in with the same side that beat Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Nazimuddin, 3 Jahurul Islam, 4 Nasir Hossain, 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Nazmul Hossain, 11 Shahadat Hossain

Pakistan played five bowlers against India, but Wahab Riaz, included in place of the specialist wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed, went for 50 in four overs. Sarfraz is expected to return for the final, freeing Umar Akmal of the additional responsibility of keeping wicket.

Pakistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Nasir Jamshed, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Hammad Azam, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz Cheema

Stats and trivia

  • Pakistan have made the Asia Cup final for only the third time. They won their previous final (in Dhaka in 2000) by 39 runs. Bangladesh, on the other hand, have made their first final of a multi-nation tournament since reaching the final of the tri-series at home in 2009

  • If Bangladesh go on to win the final, they will become only the second team after Australia (in the 2003 World Cup) to beat India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in a single tournament

Quotes

"I was out of the country and having a holiday when these things were happening. It gave me some rest and mental freshness. I wanted to prove myself in the game after I came back. I worked hard and it's going alright."
With three half-centuries in three games, Tamim Iqbal has more than proved his point after having been left out of the original Asia Cup squad.

Good to see Bangladesh raise their game. I am an Indian fan, but cricket always comes first. In fact it is so much easier to enjoy the game if your team is not playing. Pakistan has always been my second team. I am rooting for them. If Bangladesh wins, well, it's about time they did don't you think?

@cricket_fan_80, india had better NRR than bangladesh. according to me that is a better indicator of quality than head to head record in a tournament. i have no issues with the bonus point. it is just another way to reward superior NRR in a game. if analyzing is bad sportsmanship, then so be it. you be the better sportsman. i wish the game is kept simple and NRR is given priority over head to head.

Ironically, Pakistan loves to bat first and Bangladeshis love to chase so any result it possible but truly hope BD wins this for their country. No offense Pakistan and nothing against Pak team either but I'm sure you guys will also agree BD played well in first match too. BD have played some wonderful cricket in this Asia Cup but if Pakistan win this, its fair enough to say they deserve it too!! Just hope to see another treat to true cricket lovers. :) Best of luck to both teams from an Indian!! Cheers!

Due to some bad luck and clever scheduling of the matches by the home board, India are out of the tournament, when on performance, they deserved to play in the final more than anyone else. BD had just one good day against India, all saw how they collapsed like a pack of cards against Ajmal and Gul in the first game. It was only because BD-SL match was SCHEDULED LAST AND SL KNEW THEY HAD NOTHING TO GAIN FROM A VICTORY, SL GIFTED THE GAME TO BD JUST TO KNOCK INDIA OUT. I AM SURE IF SL-BD MATCH WAS HELD BEFORE IND-PAK Match with SL STILL IN CONTENTION FOR FINAL, SL WOULD HAVE DEFEATED BD. So Pakistan are going to thrash BD for sure in the final. According to the usual pattern Hafeez will get Tamim out in the first over and Gul-Ajmal will take care of the rest. SL's pathetic approach in the last game has made a complete mockery of this Asia Cup final, which could have been so much more exciting and great to watch if it was held between India and Pakistan.

How many years (Its almost 17 years) BD will stay as minnow even if they have the passion about cricket, Now the Time has come when International cricket would eagerly wait for yet another Furture World Champion from ASIA.

I would like to Appriciate BD's effort against both INDIA and SL in league matches, They showed their quality while they chasing with extreme passion. They played very sensbly and patiently in both the matches and need to repeat their performance today as well.

As an Indian I wish both the Team to play good cricket and give their 100% on the field. Pakistan should take seriuosly to BD, This BD team is not an ordinary team, That BD is gone who always believe that they can finsh the things very fast and lost their way. This BD team has sufficient plan to finish in style and passion and fight till the last ball.We all are eyewitnees while they showed their agression against INDIA in last 5 overs and showed their Calmness against SL even they had 135/5. Go BD.....

HEY hey wait. just forget the past matches. there is noone deserving. anyone who plays good matches deserve to win. if bangladesh play well they win if not they lose, past never comes in the match its the match itself where your game decide if you are deserving or not.

  • on March 22, 2012, 7:43 GMT

truth is bangladesh may fail to win. im a bangladeshi still it is the harsh truth.may allah help us and give us some luck.

  • raisagha on March 22, 2012, 7:42 GMT

Come BOYCOTT come and see who cares about Asia Cup. This is cricket, good cricket, which is enjoyed. So pleasant to see the admiration of all nations for Bangladeshi Team even Pakistani fans. Result really matters little. We want a good match. Misbah should learn from his mistakes otherwise should be ready for the politics which is again knocking at the door of Pakistan.

  • Xain.Yousfani on March 22, 2012, 7:36 GMT

Who would have thought that final between Pakistan and Bangladesh would get this interest.. its not inconsistency of Pakistan which is making this final a bigger one but its Bangladesh's consistency and professionalism that is giving this final a fair amount of fame. i have a gut feeling, the way Bangladesh is playing, they are ought to win this Asia Cup. But being a big fan of Pakistan cricket.. go team green and get the tigers loose their way :-)

  • on March 22, 2012, 7:35 GMT

Bangladesh`s Team is Well in these days but Pakistan should win this game, Inshallah

  • Haleos on March 22, 2012, 7:34 GMT

  • SpeedCricketThrills on March 22, 2012, 7:30 GMT

I am an Indian cricket fan an sincerely hope Bangladesh would win the final. It is important for the game's development that minnows mature so that the lions can be tamed and kept under control. That's a sure way to drive the complacency out of Indian cricket - administration and players.

  • on March 22, 2012, 7:29 GMT

  • kuseoul on March 22, 2012, 7:21 GMT

It will be a historic moment for Bangladesh if they win final against pak but i think we are expecting much more from Bangladeshi team. It is because they won last two games against Ind and Srilanka but i do not think they can continue this momentum for a long time. So be practical, Pak is a much more strong team than Bangladesh. GOOD LUCK FOR BANGLA and GOOD WISHES FOR PAKISTAN TOO.

  • nzmrana on March 22, 2012, 7:20 GMT

In this tournament Bangladesh is the best team and balanced team . They are in their best form now. Even the match they lost to Pakistan in fact that was their bad luck .

It's really nice to see that many Pakistani, Indian and other country's people also posting positive comments on Bangladesh, and wishing them for win. Thank you all, my brothers. This attitude of people of this region can bring real peace and friendly environment in sub-continent

  • on March 22, 2012, 7:08 GMT

With due respect to all Bangladeshis sentiments and hopes, your team has a long way to go in winning final. Ya, you are in final but if you look in to your journey of reaching the final, out of two games you have won both are been gifted to you one for reaching a personnel milestone and other for stopping other team to reach final by a unsporting team. But my friends reality is different and that you will realize after being beaten by Pakistan. So please come out of your dreams.

  • on March 22, 2012, 7:06 GMT

  • Champion24 on March 22, 2012, 7:05 GMT

I am True Pakistani and I always have supported Pakistan & will continue to do so...... However, having the knowledge of the game and having a real sportsman spirit I would like to openly say that Bangladesh is much better side this time.. They have proved themselves to be the the best in this tournament, It won't be a shocker If they win this final..they have already beaten the two best sides and were about to win against Pakistan.. They truly deserve the Asia Cup.. They have been underdogs for ages but have worked really hard , played as a solid unit, put a real cricket show with some extra ordinary fielding , strategic batting and good bowling which has lift their moral really high... No matter WHO WINS.. Bangladesh has won the tittle already by putting up superb Cricketing show.... Being a Pakistani I will be praying for Pakistan but if Bangladesh wins, I will definitely be among the celebrating side.. :) Come on both Teams, put up a breath taking final... =)

  • on March 22, 2012, 7:03 GMT

Congrats in advance to Bangladesh for if they have reached so far, they can pull of this one also!!!!

  • on March 22, 2012, 6:45 GMT

For bangladesh it is not about beating Pakistan .. it is about beating the midset.. A mindset that haunted them over years...that they are not equally good as their competitors are.. They rather than focusing on beating Pakistan and thus going into a shell should otherwise play a brave and expressive cricket .. they must play with pride ...not for the pride.. show attitude no matter you win or loose .. best of luck bangla from Pakistan - Imran uz zAman

  • adnan_rifat84 on March 22, 2012, 6:44 GMT

My predictions If Bangladesh won this match they will soon announce the tour of Pakistan other wise they gonna loose this match. Politics is going on in Cricket now a days and India is the head of POLITICS in ICC now.

Bangladesh has looked quite good in this tournament. Hope they can do well enough in the finals to win. Pak is a tough team to beat, particularly since they have a superb bowling attack.

  • provatnazmi on March 22, 2012, 6:29 GMT

Bangladesh can beat any team of the Cricket world at any time. If Asia Cup-2012 goes to BD Tigers that will not be very surprised ! It should happen !!

  • ashish514 on March 22, 2012, 6:28 GMT

@BDabuNayeemAisDU- Here comes the Indian fan. I suppose you are sure that Indian fans will root for Bangladesh given their equation with Pakistan. Well I am rooting for Bangladesh but not because I want Pakistan to lose, but because I want Bangladesh to win. I supported Pakistan in England-Pakistan series. Bangladesh has beaten both world cup finalists and has come very close to beat the semi-finalist Pakistan, and so I think this team deserves to win. The win will be a huge boost to Bangladesh cricket. Just like 1983 WC win was to India. Go Bangladesh...

  • go_pk_go on March 22, 2012, 6:28 GMT

I bet, this will be an easy win for PAK ...

There are only two B'desh players who I think truly belong to international stage. Shakib-ul-hasan and abdur razzak. They have been consistent and good performer for a while. Others are absolutely mediocre. They need at least 4 more such players to declare themselves a good team. For Asia cup, they prepared pathetic pitches, batted second always and reached the final. India and Pakistan are the only teams that could defend a total here and they deserved a final.

  • Shamim_araf on March 22, 2012, 6:07 GMT

Thanks 2 all Pak supporter that all of u want 2 see victory of another Asian power house of World cricket.all of u really appreciate our Bangladesh cricket team & also even wishhes 4 us that we can create history by defeating Pakistan.Actually it is good 4 all Asian nation that Asian teams r coming more powerfully.....so we think we have already win over 4m other nations supporter.so go ahead tiger & grab the title Asia Cup & make true victory of cricket.best of luck 2 our Bangladesh cricket team.

  • on March 22, 2012, 6:05 GMT

I think Bangladesh should make one change with replacing Shahadat Hossain with Shafiul Islam. It is obviously subject to Shafiul's recovery over injury. Shafiul is not only a better bowler but also good hitter of the ball as he proved it in the World Cup. Since Shahadat is giving away a lot of runs, the BCB selectors must consider it seriously. It is a final match, so the final team selection has to be made very carefully. The consistency and a tension free cricket can easily reward BD tigers. Good luck my heart and soul team.

We are not excited as much as stadrad of this game final of asia cup .would be better if Pak Vs.India. game very happy for Bangaldehs and there fans i dont think Bangaldesh can win this, as being seriuos cricket fans off course i want pakistan to win tittle but , I will be equaly please if bangaldesh doing magic. it will be great for bangaldesh team and there desprate cricket lover fans. we have seen glories so many times as big as world cup. but it will be 1st time for BD and will be big bosst for BD cricket, as we always helped to progress thier cricket future to BD as well as Srilanka . for me this final disopinting more then joy,one way the other, if pak loss tille will be disopint as pakistnai and if BD loss will be disopoint of BD team who came with high expactations specailly for Hogue BD Crowed on the groung and who BD cricket lovers. But i sugest one thing they must be satisfied in any case cuz their team already done un beliveably well.

  • on March 22, 2012, 5:41 GMT

In all fairness, I am sure BD fully deserve to win the Cup. They have matured enough and got developed the instinct of go for the kill. Incidentally if they win today (of course I wish), they will be perhaps only team to beat all three World Cup Winning teams in same tournament to win a major title.

Young Bangladeshi team has proved their potentials very convincingly in this tournament. Now its time for rest of the cricketing nations to recognize Bangladesh as an emerging nation and have more tours with us. It is sad that India is the only test nation e never had a a tour. We deserve tour there as well as other major cricketing nations. Bangladeshi young guns have everything else like her more senior cricketing neighbours. we just need more exposure to international standard.

So as a bangladeshi I hope to see a lively match today. And hopefully bangla tigers roar once again cause its really needed for bangladesh cricket.

But I do appreciate the true ckt fans comments here........BOL to all

  • on March 22, 2012, 3:27 GMT

This match would be very interesting; Bangladesh did well against India and Srilanka batting second and chased down high totals, but against pakistan it would be difficult as they have got much stronger bowling attack. on the other hand even Bangladesh know this, they would still fancy their chances batting second, and pakistan would also want this to happen because we know that pakistanis aren't good chasers, and in a day and night Asia cup final against the roaring hosts and their enthusiastic fans, they would find it very tough. SO GAME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mani67 on March 22, 2012, 3:20 GMT

Pressure will be on Pakistan team because if Pakistan won, no body will give them any credit but if they lose , everybody will curse them. They have already lost against India so people of Pakistan will want them atleast win this match ....

The sentence "Had Shakib Al Hasan been playing for some of the bigger Test sides, he would have been given a lot more respect than he gets at present" is a massive understatement. The kid has been consistently near the top of the ICC rankings for allrounder for quite some time, but is almost ignored outside of Bangladesh. There's been few allrounders in recent years who have maintained similar averages, carried so much of their team & fan's hopes, and still continued to improve. Nice to see that the BD team have started to perform as a unit - no team should take the Bangladeshis lightly.

  • meengla on March 22, 2012, 2:42 GMT

My first Comment ever in CricInfo--though I have been coming here for years. As a Pakistani, I have always wanted Pakistan to win. But this time...let Bangladesh win. Not only that fits my inclination to support 'the underdogs' (though BD is proving otherwise) in general but also BD has really fought hard in this tournament. Above all, I want a good fight. A real 'match'.

  • ostad on March 22, 2012, 2:42 GMT

Mushfiq is good in no.6 or 7. BD can think to send him for batting to bat a older ball (30+)l.What happened with Nazimuddin? We have a lot of expectation from him.Tamim's fever worries us again. But team spirit is the only thing we depend on.

  • on March 22, 2012, 0:26 GMT

the weirdest thing about this match is that both teams are highly unpredictable and somewhat inconsistent....but i feel whoever bats second will have 70% chance of winning, even if the team batting first scores above 300.

  • USALove on March 22, 2012, 0:11 GMT

  • kunderanengineer on March 21, 2012, 22:04 GMT

I have nothing against Pakistan but as a true cricket fan I think it would be good for cricket if Bangladesh can pull this one out. Furthermore, when you consider that the average age of their squad is barely 25, winning this tournament would give the young players a big boost in confidence as well as finally getting the monkey off the team's back. Also the long suffering but fiercely loyal Bangla fans deserve it. It's for the same reason that I would like to see the Windies perform well against the Aussies and the Kiwis do well against the Saffers(although that one is spiralling out of control for the kiwis). Let's see a little bit more balance in international cricket!

  • on March 21, 2012, 21:52 GMT

For die hard Pakistani and Indian fans, it is a blessing in disguise for the game of cricket to see Bangladesh in the final. If cricket has to survive, it cannot have a few big fish and a handful of minnows. It must grow globally like football (soccer). Can Shakib and Tamim pull it off? Can the Bangladesh bowlers take advantage of the fallibility of the Pakistani batting? Go Pakistan!!!

  • on March 21, 2012, 21:06 GMT

This match is going to be like the epic battle in Rocky II,Rocky vs Apollo Creed. In Rocky I(just like the first match b/w Pak and Ban), Rocky floored Creed but lost on technical points basis. Will Rocky win this time? that is the big question.

  • sirvivfan on March 21, 2012, 20:50 GMT

It is Pakistans game to loose. They should bowl first...... Which they won't if they win the toss because of there fear they have over there unpredictable batting

i think parties r waiting for tigers........i think possibility of bad :pak=55:45... if tigers play their natural game, they will win surely...remember pak r not too much good form in ODIs... they were near defeat against bd,they r beaten by india oddly.....even though they were trouble in chasing against srilanka....otherside tigers got more and more confidence as tornament proceed..thats why bangladesh r little ahead than pakistan to get the trophy.... best of luck,tigers...

@ Indraneel.Kundu: You're mistaken. If Pakistan hadn't had the bonus point, the head to head rule would be inconclusive, runrate would be considered and Pakistan has the best runrate. It's Bangladesh who has gained from our bonus point.

  • KukaSekhon on March 21, 2012, 20:07 GMT

I think it's the core group of Bangla team which has started to perform consistently. They do need quality fast bowlers and fielding needs improvement. Nasir has shown good approach towards fielding. Good luck for finals

  • on March 21, 2012, 20:06 GMT

Pakistan will be the new asian champion inshaAllah...

  • on March 21, 2012, 20:06 GMT

@binojpeter: Ironically, Bangladesh loves chasing and Pakistan loves defending, so whoever wins the toss, the other team will get the decision it wants.

  • on March 21, 2012, 20:04 GMT

i'm Bdeshi. Pakistan is the favourite. But there's some chance for Bdesh if the familiar batting collapse doesn't return, bcoz there r many talented players in BD team now.

  • street_smart on March 21, 2012, 20:00 GMT

It will be a tie..coz Allah cannot be partial...

  • on March 21, 2012, 20:00 GMT

BD is on the brink of making history!!!!! hope they do well tomorrow!! win or lose ima die-hard-fan of Bd team!! :)

  • cricket_fan_1980 on March 21, 2012, 19:54 GMT

Hey Indraneel.Kundu, I can understand your frustrations as an Indian fan because when you analyze the rules, it seems like a tight decision. However, the truth of the matter is, the rules were decided before and Pakistan benefited from them. It does not exhibit good sportsmanship if somebody cribs about the rules after a game. With that line of argument, every single series or tournament could be sidelined because some fan will suggest that the boundary was too small, or the over-rate wasn't fast enough, or the white ball should've been used over the red, or D/L method can be updated etc. When the rules are pre-determined, you play within them and everybody has access to exactly the same platform. Therefore, based on that, it is my opinion that over the three games, Pakistan performed much better than India, and therefore made the final. The only real standout performance from India against Pakistan was Virat Kohli, and respect to the guy. But other than that, the two best teams made it

  • on March 21, 2012, 19:54 GMT

Best wishes for Bangladesh. This is the moment to live the dream.

  • Vilander on March 21, 2012, 19:52 GMT

fella how will Allah help both of you ? what tie ?

  • Rohanbandekar on March 21, 2012, 19:47 GMT

I love the BD crowd. It reminds me of India's crowd in the late 90's when we had just started winning convincingly. It was a great feeling for me in the 90's when we managed to win against big teams. I hope it would be a close final. Good luck BD and Pak.

  • andrew27994 on March 21, 2012, 19:46 GMT

Wish both teams best of luck I think for a Bangladesh win, then their fielding has to be at its best. If there is one thing that they haven't possibly done well in the tournament, then it is their fielding. Secondly, they must ensure that they don't lose early wickets in their innings and play out Ajmal's quota of 10 overs. They can afford to target Afridi a bit as he has been somewhat inconsistent of recent. Bangladesh must also not underestimate Cheema as I feel he is an even bigger threat than Gul, Hafeez or Afridi. For a Pakistan win, then they must open the bowling with Gul and Cheema. Though Hafeez has been successful with the new ball, most teams usually try to play out his overs without giving him a wicket. Pakistan's middle order batting has been the worst in this tournament so they need them to fire especially after the top order batsmen's good efforts. Misbah should promote himself up the order at No.4. He is a batman who usually requires time to get set for the big shots.

  • Sports4Youth on March 21, 2012, 19:35 GMT

I admire the way the crowd has been supporting the home team in large numbers. I think apart from the team even the crowd deserves a win. Best of Luck Bangladesh. I hope they win.

  • on March 21, 2012, 19:35 GMT

its pretty amazing to see Pakistani supporters saying positive things about the Bangladeshi side even though we are playing against Pakistan. I agree with all of you thinking Bangladesh deserves this win, the fans deserve this win. The team has played amazingly throughout the tournament, the win would give them the confidence they would need to grow as a team. I hope the team plays sensibly and doesn't choke in front of the more experience Pakistani team, that is really all. Hoping for some good cricket!

the short selection was very poor, but still they those matches its because the bpl 20/20 cricket gives them blindness to hit the ball. once it went past in time frame of few days and again they will come back to usual position150 all out or like that....until than people will dance like never eaten a quality food while in hungry.

Shakib Al Hasan is almost like Bangladesh's captain in the post match presentations. Mushfiqur comes on to say his speech. And Shakib too comes on to say his man-of-the-match speech and talks like a captain. Yes, for the moment, as Shakib goes, so does Bangladesh. But they are growing as team very fast.

  • on March 21, 2012, 18:32 GMT

Hope Bangladesh win this tournament rather than Pakistan and the knight Sakib-Al-Hassan will get another man of the match.

  • ddlj26 on March 21, 2012, 18:09 GMT

Being an Indian, all i have to say Bangladesh despite their great efforts in this tournament will not be able to win the finals for the following reasons 1) The match against India with 3 overs and 33 runs required after watching some highlights with no offense to bangladesh if it wasnt for some pathetic bowling by pathan and kumar india would have won that game 2) In the match against Sri lanka, i think SL gift wrapped the game to bangladesh knowing truly they had nothing to gain by winning anyways, the lack of killer instinct is a motivation killer as well 3) Pakistan actually play up really well to bangladesh strengths which is batting, pakistan have the bowling attack to contain and control their batsmen, i dont think bangladesh will win this game with their bowling All valid reasons for Pak victory !

  • on March 21, 2012, 18:07 GMT

I hope Bangladesh will win the final but if they dont, not to worry about this, you have sent a message to the world you can create a opportunity to win a cup ...Good Luck

  • on March 21, 2012, 18:05 GMT

I am a Bangladeshi but I want Pakistan should win the final because Pakistan is far better team than Bangladesh. Bangladesh have played well in the tournament but still a long way to go for them and they should improve their bowling to be a world class team. Pakistan has been proven the best team of the asia cup so they deserve to lift the asia cup.

  • on March 21, 2012, 17:57 GMT

No doubt Bangaladesh did so well in beating two great cricketing nations but its hard for them to go through it in the presence of three giants sppiners of the era but i wish it will be a good contest........... Pakistan will Win................................................................. and lift the trophy for us

  • on March 21, 2012, 17:21 GMT

Bangladesh also have to play against pressure & with lots of expectation. & i think its our main opposition as main as Ajmal. May Allah help us.....

  • on March 21, 2012, 17:21 GMT

I think Bangladesh will win. The Pakistani's played very unintelligent cricket against India. They should have learned from the England side, and bowled slow deliveries outside the off stump towards the end, instead of short deliveries at the batsman. Mid-off and mid-on were way too deep and singles here were often taken and the captain did nothing. The field placing was worse than the fielding, and there was no attempt to really pickup the pace in the last few Pak overs, they were content with making around 325 when they really should have got at least 360. Wahab Riaz and Aizaz Cheema played like amateurs, very expensive. The wicket keeper was nothing to write home about. Bangladesh have a heart, discipline, good fielding and intelligent cricketers.

  • on March 21, 2012, 17:20 GMT

Big movment for bangladesh team .Iwish all the best for them...

  • on March 21, 2012, 17:19 GMT

Pakistan will be under pressure on the following accounts: 1- Being a major cricket playing team. 2- Playing in front of huge opposing crowd. 3- Bangladesh will be playing as underdog. 4- Bangladesh team is more familiar with home ground and pitch condition. 5. Bangladesh is riding on the high euphoria after defeating India and SriLanka. If Pakistan wins the Toss, Pakistan should decide to choose to play on its strength i.e Bowl first. Include the regular wicket keeper Sarfraz. Open Bowling with Hafeez and Gul. Bring Cheema and Afridi after 10 overs. Go with Saeed and Afridi in bowling power play. Go with Saeed and Gul in Batting power play. Last 10 overs with Saeed, Gul and Cheema. Hafeez and Afridi should finish their overs in the middle.

  • on March 21, 2012, 17:17 GMT

Winning is not important at this stage. Just show and deliver ur best. Good Luck Bangladesh!

  • on March 21, 2012, 17:17 GMT

Bangladesh's surge to the final holds the promise of another close match,Pakistan has left 50 percent pressure after India's out of the race to cup but Pakistan must remember the close match just 21 short Bangladesh consistently solid performances for three games running against world-class opposition alarming Pakistan players specially the two seniors Younus & Misbah.

  • FrenchCricketFan on March 21, 2012, 17:12 GMT

The first thing bangladesh should do to prepare for this final match is to get rid of shahadat hossain, he will be very expensive and cost the game. Bring another baller in place of shahadat hossain and bring the batsman anamul huq in place of jahurul islam .

  • on March 21, 2012, 17:08 GMT

Please to all the Indian fanboys don't comment how awesome and fabulous your team is ! This article is bout the final between PAKISTAN AND BANGLADESH and not India so please even though you won from Pakistan which was a really great match you also lost to BD so yeah stick to the article.. • getsetgopk on March 21, 2012, 16:43 GMT

just curious, have the Indian team arrived home yet or still hanging furiously around dhaka? lol To the bangladesh and pak fans here, may the best team win.

  • Indraneel.Kundu on March 21, 2012, 16:43 GMT

Even as an Indian fan, I am happy for Bangladesh. Hammad Azam's lofted 4 of Sekkuge Prasanna in the 40th over gave Pakistan the bonus point and it eventually took Pakistan to the final ahead of India. Net run rate is the best way to judge the performance of a team in a competition when two or more sides have the same no. of wins. Like DL method, ICC or the tournament organizers have come out with unfair rule of head to head comparison ahead of NRR. It is a step backwards considering the increasing use of statistical analysis to judge quality of players and teams. All the rankings are based on math, but surprisingly it takes a back seat when selecting the finalists of a tournament. Call me a bitter Indian fan, maybe I am. After seeing the battles of imperfect teams, I felt India did play the best cricket in two of the three departments, batting and fielding. It's unfortunate and to a great extent unfair, that they didn't get a chance to fight for the championship.

  • on March 21, 2012, 16:39 GMT

  • binojpeter on March 21, 2012, 16:18 GMT

All the best to both teams for the final. Let the best team win. Even though I wish a Bangladesh win, I see two factors that might go against them. 1. Pakistan has more experience handling pressure situations in a final than Bangladesh 2. Even though they won the toss in all the 3 matches they played, Bangladesh decided to chase the score always. They did not have the chance to see whether they have the ability to defend their score once. I don't blame them for that because if you win the toss, natural tendency is to do what you do best than to try something different. But if Pakistan wins the toss in the final and decide to send them in, they really will have to play out of their skin to post a defendable score and win.
