Bangladesh fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza has been ruled out of the Asia Cup with a side strain. He will be replaced by Shafiul Islam.

"Mortaza had picked up a side strain during the match against India on February 26. The scan report suggests it is a strain on the left side," Bangladesh physio Vibhav Singh said. "Unfortunately he is out of this tournament. He will carry on doing the rehab under the guidance of the BCB medical team and we will assess him further in the coming days."

The injury is a blow to Bangladesh's campaign because they are already without Tamim Iqbal, who is also unfit, and Shakib Al Hasan, who will be available only for the last two league games because of his three-ODI ban.

Bangladesh are also waiting on Mushfiqur Rahim, who hurt his shoulder during the game against India and was taken to hospital for scans. "We will continue to asses him today," Vibhav said. "He will undergo a fitness test tomorrow after which we will decide whether he can play the match against Afghanistan."

Bangladesh lost their opening game of the Asia Cup to India and are due to play Afghanistan on March 1.

@ all the Bangladesh fans already coming up with excuses and making comments regarding how this is a weakened BD team which is why they might not do so well ... Where was this logic when you beat a West Indies C or D team in a one day and test series a few years ago? To date that is your "greatest" test achievement and "finest" series triumph! WI did not miss 3 or 4 players like Bangladesh here. They were without their first and second choice XIs throughout the whole series and lost it. And yet that was no big deal to you. However when merely 4 players are missing suddenly your whole team is different? What an irony

Bangladesh will loose this match by big margin. and they should be stripped out of all kind of cricket. what a shame, after 15 years of playing, they are in same stage.

Bangladesh do win after couple of games espically in home condition but now they arr going through bad time espically big guns like sakib, tamim, mashrafee, musfiq out due to injury if tomorrow musfiq doesnt play that means bamgladesh are playing with outany them after 8-9 yrs n may lost the game with unexpirence team only expirnce player are mahmadullah n razzaq ,mr depandable nasir is out of form any way good luck to afganistan n bd

Now BD gets their punch bag. The same league teams clash. They should prove that they are superior within the league that they belong in. One more compelling reason why the second tier teams should be competing among themselves.

Some BD fans need to grow up. Don't cry because Shakib is out! He brought disgrace to the game and his nation. BD people are better than that. He deserved the punishment. Just thank God that ICC did not take action. How many times great all-rounders like Jack Kallis, Shaun Pollok, Sachin, Vettori, etc. behaved like Shakib??? No doubt that Shakib is one of the best BD players and all-rounders in the world, but BD has shown the world they can win without him. BD tigers are capable of winning without Tamim, Mashrafe, and Shakib. They have done it before. They should be able to do that again in this Asia Cup. The only concern is Mushfiq's injury who has been able to anchor the innings and has been pretty consistent in recent months. BD should drop Nasir if he does not perform. Imrul Kayes should be in if Mushfiq is out. It won't matter who replaces Mashrafe - Al Amin, Shafiur or Farhad Reza are of the same quality.

All the best for BD team for the up coming matches. BD fans do not take IND PAK fans comments serious as they are so hurt by recent humiliation by SL.

Afghanistan must not be underestimated, they can couse a big trouble to any side.

Posted by   on (February 28, 2014, 19:51 GMT)

Stop talking about afghans making paks scorecard 117/6 . Even bangladesh made Sl scorecard to 65/8 . So ? are we telling Sri Lanka is better than us??? It's just a basic sense !!

Posted by   on (February 28, 2014, 16:45 GMT)

Bangladesh will win & take the bonus point of tomorrow's game against AFG. This is because, Ban has everything to do this. Moreover, I respect Pak and SL both . In the contrary, Ban will beat Pak and SL as well. There are some reasons like Ban needs only the confident that things will come tomorrow's game. Ban team has some special players , but they need their luck only. I know some people think otherwise, but after the all three games everyone will get results wht am saying now. All the best for SL,Ind, Pak,Afg and Bd for giving us exciting time.

It may become a sad day for BD against AFG, but at least BCB will be smiling by pushing over Shakib with extreme retribution for a charade that warranted merely apt reprimand. Way to go BCB, and Cheers for the Tigers...

Crises time for bd hope they pul it together before the World Cup, Asian cup is all over for them, if afghan win tomorrow, all the fan will stop coming to the ground

It is a mater of great sorrow for Bangladesh Cricket Team

If mushfiq does not play against afghanistan then the young stars like nasir, mominul and shamsur will be under a lot of pressure in the absence of sakib tamim who are the key players of bangladesh. But don't forget it's a must win game for bangladesh.

If Mushfiq is injured then make Nasir the captain. Might he will click for BD.

@Aquib it is only the Pakistani and Indians come up with the dream that those 2 teams gonna replace us not because they are better than us but it is more to do with your narrow mentality. None of those team is as good as we are and our recent performance more than enough to prove that but im sure when we talk about recent performance you people will only look at the SL series. Truth is in few year Pak will be replace from the middle place by the lower ranked team like WI, NZ, BD so why dont you worry about your own

Posted by android_user on (February 28, 2014, 12:02 GMT)

Afghanistan will cause major upsets in near future.but they only need brave batting and captaincy .

Posted by android_user on (February 28, 2014, 11:14 GMT)

@aaqib ali amer brother thats too early to say such thing.afgan bowlers looked promising. they managed to make pak scorcard 117/6. but hey just a few days ago BD too made the srilankan scorecard 65/8. and thats too against a better batting line up than PAK.but that didn't make BD better than srilanka.so take it easy.BD is a very improved side.so hope afgan gives a good fight.

Posted by android_user on (February 28, 2014, 9:56 GMT)

Afghanistan are far better team than Bangladesh Their top 4 batsman can play pace quite well which means they will prove good enough and competitive against all those teams who have pace attacks and containing spinners only (i.e. other than Pak, India, Lanka) Their bowling is disciplined, pace bowling is good enough to extract what ever is available and even what ever is not. They have a leg spinner who works on a very good line, they have a left arm offspinner who created problems for those, who play spin well (Pak batters) I think, Afghanistan along side Ireland can easily replace Bangladesh and Zimbabwe for the last 2 test status slots if they play a tournament on neutral place

Posted by android_user on (February 28, 2014, 9:50 GMT)

mashrafi out-not a big blow but shafiul in - man, thats a big blow.please bring in al amin.this lad is better and underrated. shakib's bowling will be missed.

Posted by   on (February 28, 2014, 9:27 GMT)

Mr Mashrafe says that Bangladesh defeating India is no more a upset.....But i think Mashrafe playing a full tournament is itself a upset.

Posted by   on (February 28, 2014, 9:24 GMT)

Mashrafe is out of the Asia Cup, We don't consider this as an upset. Bangladesh is still the worst team along with Afghanistan this tournament.

Posted by Anubhav-the-Experience on (February 28, 2014, 9:22 GMT)

bad luck for banglas this asia cup...they are down before they can even begin to fight...although for rest of us its a good opportunity to watch a competitive match between bangla and afghan.

Posted by wanatawu on (February 28, 2014, 8:25 GMT)

Mashrafe Mortaza - probably the best current bowler in the world. It will be a massive lost.

Posted by SarfBD on (February 28, 2014, 8:24 GMT)

@sorry mate, can't agree with you. He delivered some memorable victories specially against India. Additionally his ODI record is very similar to Shakib's. Given the history of his injury and the home condition (slow low pitches suited for spinners only), that is some performance. Recently he is not at his best. But still better than other seamers of our team. Just remember how he turned the tide against SL in a recent T20. But never mind. Fans usually suffer from goldfish syndrome :)

Posted by asadc2003 on (February 28, 2014, 8:08 GMT)

nothing to be worried about, our team is not depending on any single player, with out shakib tamim still we can score around 300 .

Posted by Ain_EL_Sabet on (February 28, 2014, 8:00 GMT)

Arafat sunny is far better choice than shafiul , even farhad reza probably better than shafiul. Why dont rubel hossain never gets injury like mashrafe ? Rubel usually get wicket only by luck , not good baller, I wish Bd give rest to rubel for good. I hope Bd finds new faces in balling soon. For now zia and arafat looking promising and Bd should groom them.

Posted by   on (February 28, 2014, 7:27 GMT)

The bowler who said beating Indian team was no more an upset saw himself out of Asia Cup due to an injury. Now he can see from sidelines that Pakistan, Sri Lanka and even Afghanistan causing "upset" by beating his home team Bangladesh.

Posted by BanglaBandhu on (February 28, 2014, 7:22 GMT)

Mashrafe has had a history of injuries and its a shame he's out but hopefully, against a not so aggressive AFG batting line up he will not be missed.

(NOTE TO ESPNcric info staff - Shakib was given a 3 match ban before the the last SL ODI. Shakib will be available to play after the AFG match)

Posted by naimurchowdhury32 on (February 28, 2014, 7:20 GMT)

Mashrafee is a big liability. Bowls extremely poorly, when was the last time he put up a decent performance.

Posted by AbdulMohamad731 on (February 28, 2014, 7:14 GMT)

Mashrafee is extremely overrated player. Never performs, a big liability on the team anyway.

Posted by   on (February 28, 2014, 6:43 GMT)

this is a big blow to bd tigerz.. hope he will be available for t20 world cup. we need him

Posted by   on (February 28, 2014, 6:32 GMT)

God Bless Bangladesh..:( Can't see any hope

Posted by   on (February 28, 2014, 6:30 GMT)

Man I'm done. Hope we are full-strength by T20 World Cup :D Need Mash,Tamim and Shakib completely fit :)

Posted by   on (February 28, 2014, 6:22 GMT)

We can't expect any good results with the current line up. No more hope at all
