The indomitable spirit that has characterised Afghanistan's sharp rise in world cricket shone brightly in Fatullah. Playing in the Asia Cup for the first time, Afghanistan not only defeated Bangladesh, the Test-playing hosts, they almost managed to sneak out a bonus point too. Bangladesh, who took 28 matches to register their first-win against a major side, were left embarrassed by a younger cricketing nation playing only its fourth match against a major team.

The foundation of the historic win was laid by a stunning 164-run stand for the sixth wicket between Asghar Stanikzai and Samiullah Shenwari that lifted Afghanistan from 90 for 5 in the 27th over to a competitive 254. The Afghanistan bowlers then ensured they maintained the intensity and produced an all-round bowling performance to shock the hosts.

Stanikzai and Shenwari had come together at a stage when Bangladesh spinners were busy closing all escape doors, but they went through a careful rebuilding phase till the 40th over, before exploding in the last 10 to amass 107 runs - easily their best performance in the final overs. The stand was broken on the penultimate delivery of the innings when Shenwari was run-out for 81, but Stanikzai stayed unbeaten on 90 off 103 balls. Bangladesh, who had a firm grip on the proceedings for 80% of the innings, fell apart in the last 20%.

Rubel Hossain was smashed for 40 in his last four overs, Abdur Razzak and Arafat Sunny were whipped for 25 and 19 in their last two and Ziaur Rahman was taken for 16 as Stanikzai and Shenwari hit 12 fours and four sixes in the last 10 overs, beating the 88 they scored against Scotland in 2009.

Bangladesh's hopes of a quick turnaround through their batting were dashed almost as soon as the chase started. Stanikzai and Shenwari's energy had spilled over to the their bowling too. Shapoor Zadran generated enough pace in his first over to rattle the openers. He capped it off with a wicket off the fifth ball that cut Shamsur Rahman into half and sent his offstump cartwheeling. Bowling from the other end, Hamid Hassan surprised Anamul Haque with his pace and trapped the opener lbw. The storm that had hit Bangladesh in the first innings was showing no sign of abatement. The hosts were down to 1 for 2, and the control they had on the game after opting to bowl, was all but lost.

It was clear at the toss that Bangladesh, who were without three first-choice players, were going to put Afghanistan through a trial by spin as Mushfiqur responded to the slowness in the Fatullah pitch by including an additional spinner. Arafat Sunny, the left-arm orthodox bowler, was brought in to replace the injured Mashrafe and was the second spinner to bowl inside the first 10 overs.

Sunny removed the two batsmen who had been busy putting up a resistance since the fall of Mohammad Shahzad in the third over. Karim Sadiq lobbed a leading edge back to Sunny in his second over. In his next over, Sunny dismissed Najibullah Zadran with one that slipped under the massive gap between the batsman's bat and pad. Afghanistan slipped to 43 for 3 in the 14th over.

Afghanistan showed signs of changed intent immediately after the first drinks break but the urgency cost Nawroz Mangal his wicket as he was run-out. The spin ploy seemed to have yielded the desired result as Afghanistan were reduced to 90 for 5.

But Shenwari, after a period of careful rebuilding, announced the change in momentum with consecutive boundaries off the last two balls of the 40th over, off Razzak. He reached his half-century, in 54 balls, with a slice to the point boundary and followed it up with a reverse-sweep. The best of his 11 hits to the boundary was the one that cleared it. Razzak, bowling from over the wicket, had seen Shenwari step out and bowled it wide outside off, but the batsman stretched out and connected beautifully to lift the ball to the sightscreen.

Then Stanikzai, who had been the quieter of the two - he hit his first boundary off the 74th ball - joined in smashing a six and a four in the 44th over bowled by Rubel. The first of the two shots brought him his half-century. He also provided the perfect finish, hitting another set of a six and a four in the last over. The third delivery of that over was whacked over midwicket and the fourth, a wide full-toss, was carved to deep point. By the time he finished, Stanikzai had hit six fours and three sixes to reach his career-best score.

The confidence that had surged in the Afghanistan innings oozed through their shots as what had been a slow pitch hardly made a difference. Length deliveries frequently disappeared into gaps at deep midwicket or covers and spinners' flight or flatter trajectory made no impact. Bangladesh's fielding too buckled under pressure as couple of easy catches were dropped while the ground fielding allowed extra runs. The beating that the bowlers' figures took was sharply in contrast with the way they had started the day. Adding to the hosts' woes, Sohag Gazi split his right-hand webbing after bowling only three deliveries.

Bangladesh's chances of revival rested on their captain, Mushfiqur, and Mominul Haque. The two set about scripting a recovery in much the same fashion as the protagonists of Afghanistan's innings: the defensive shots were interspersed with attractive hits to the boundary. Mominul, particularly, made sure any loose delivery didn't go unpunished, pulling and driving every time an opportunity presented. He reached his half-century in 71 deliveries.

Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi broke the 68-run stand when he beat Mushfiqur in flight and had him lbw. Mominul left 19 runs later, yorked by a Shenwari delivery. Bangladesh could have been in further trouble had Afghanistan grabbed the numerous chances Nasir Hossain offered. He was dropped four times - on 1, 4, 14 and 31 - before eventually getting caught for 41 by Shenwari, who had dropped him twice. By that time, he had added 73 for the fifth wicket. Although the required run rate had climbed to over eight an over, the partnership kept the hosts' hopes alive.

That though changed soon as Bangladesh lost four wickets for four runs, three of them in three balls spread across two overs. A hard-hitting cameo from Zia-ur-Rahman, who hit 42 off 22 deliveries, avoided Bangladesh ignominy of handing the opponents a bonus point, but it was to be a mere flutter.

It is big achievement for Afghanistan cricket team.

Today's BD batting performance against PK showed that BD's defeat to AFG was due to psychological reason rather than injury, lack of skill, form etc. BD have lost to underdogs in 1st encounter several times (e.g. IRE, NED, CAN). But then BD thrashed those sides in a dominating way in later encounters. So it'll b unfair if we think AFG is better side than BD. BD always fear defeat against an underdog (more than all other top 10 teams). Otherwise they wouldn't lose to IRE, NED, AFG, CAN etc in 1st encounter. I'm sure AFG will struggle against full strength BD in next encounter.

@Wardag Congratulation! i really appreciate your team Afghanistan with your fast progress & your bowling attack has been better than your batting, wish you beat even more bigger test nation teams around the world & prove to be a very good team in future:)

As an Afghan i am really proud of our team and its fast growing, but till there are problems specially in our beating

Wounded tiger is more dangerous ,we will reply it by rest of the matches .Accident Happens .

Losing is no shame BUT in this case it was a shame for BD to let underdog AFG win against a test playing nation so soon..by the way mushfiqur's LBW decision was awful from there the biggest turn started & BD couldn't stick to there plan after that..AFG played really well so no credit been taken away from them for whatever fighting spirit they showed & even winning finally..BD played did not play even 70% to their potential... but i can see so much criticism by SL'n & IND'n fans after BD's loss against a underdog team AFG & previous game losing to IND...to much pride will again give you a good lesson to you both teams..let BD come to their original form as BCB is also much responsible & then again injured Tamim, Mashrafe & Shakib being there can't play & specialist spinner Gazi could deliver only three bowls & then couldn't even bat freely due to stitched injured finger..but this is not the end of the world for BD cricket just wait & watch how they bounce back with upcoming series!

With due apologies to the BD fans: guys, I'm not even so sure it WAS an upset. In fact, Afghanistan appears to have far more talent and passion than the BD team, who were just given the test status on the backing of Pakistan and India because they thought another vote in the Asian Block would be helpful.

Posted by randikaayya on (March 3, 2014, 4:25 GMT)

Afghanistan and Ireland are exiting teams that we look forward to seeing. Could never say the same about Bangladesh. It appears that BD players are naturally more gifted than many otehr cricketers world wide. But inherently lack a certain quality that will help them mature into consistently performing match winners. This can even be seen in teh BD support, whenever a ball is played down the park by a BD cricketer the whole of their support erupts, and when long-on of off picks it up to throw this cacophony dies. this happens every game and everytime. Perhaps a certain lack of understanding of the game within the support base, which is shared by teh team too that prevents them from going to the next level. Afghans on teh other hand seem sure of themselves, and posses a keen sense of what-to-do next in cricket terms. Much better temperament

Upset! Upset ! We have an upset alright. In fact, can we call this an upset?

Posted by Venkat Sraman on (March 3,2014) It was a memorable win for Afghanistan in the Asia Cup against the test playing nation Bangladesh.Their inspired youngsters, under the able leadership of Mohammad Nabi,Asghar Stanikzai and man of the match Samiullah Shenwari piled up 164 runs off 138 balls for the sixth wicket. This has laid the foundation to put pressure on Bangladesh by their bowlers to restrict them to 222 runs, thereby winning their first match by 32 runs.

Now this one is a real upset. Bangladeshis were beaten due to their false sense of arrogance.

Posted by Temuzin on (March 2, 2014, 18:32 GMT)

Bravo Afghanistan. Well played, you deserved it and keep it up. Bad for Bangladesh who are fast becoming a joke of test playing nations. For Bangladeshis its all talk no substance.

Posted by   on (March 2, 2014, 17:36 GMT)

What a joke! Afghanistan will be doomed just like Kenya as also we already can see the fate of Ireland who could not qualify for the under 19 world cup. Within few years Ireland will go down like Kenya and Afghanistan will follow them for sure. BD is there to stay and they will bounce back as always. Come on Bangla Tigers!

Posted by   on (March 2, 2014, 17:04 GMT)

Congratulation to Afghanistan, I am so proud of you guys, considering where you started and the direction you are heading. Against Bangladesh you showed real character fighting back from 90-5 to 254 for 6. Lets head in the right direction further with a positive result against Sri Lanka then India. Peace

I am saddened to say this but it seems that BAN have been paying for 30+ years now and this is how they lose to AFG. BAD !!!

When this tournament began I was looking forward to this encounter.

Well Done AFG !!!

It is cricket we should not lose hope As an afghan best luck for bangla tigers for their upcoming matches

Posted by android_user on (March 2, 2014, 12:29 GMT)

One or two win doesn't mean afghan are better team . it's long way to go . first make player from ur own soil not borrowing from Pakistan . u guys don't have a single field to play cricket than how u gonna improve .

Posted by Click_Click_Cricket on (March 2, 2014, 11:51 GMT)

Congrats to Afghan Brothers for their first ODI win against BD. They played really well. At the same time it was clear that luck was a bit in their favor too. How? Weaker BD team to gave Afghans extra hope and confidence. Afghans survived a few close LBW shouts. Anamul's LBW was not a FAIR decision, one commentator said it right way. Gazi picked up an injury - 8/9 stitches so BD was basically chasing with 9 wickets. To all BD haters, keep hating because BD team will soon bounce back. And keep saying that all non-ICC full members are better than BD because that helps you SLEEP BETTER! Let's see how Afghans perform in the near future. One of my Paki friends recently told me half of these Afghan players are actually Paki. They are less likely to get a chance with Pakistan so they try with AFG. If that's true it reminds me of the UAE team in the 90's! Then BD should request SRT, KP and Kallis to join their team!

Posted by android_user on (March 2, 2014, 11:16 GMT)

upset????? you might be kidding ....

Posted by neanderthal on (March 2, 2014, 11:05 GMT)

@Srabon Salim, If there were more such sensible comments like yours from other BD supporters, surely noone would be deriding Bangladesh. Upsets happen in cricket and all teams go through bad patches. I still think BD is a good team in their own country and then just need to correct a few things. Who knows, now that everyone is expecting them to lose everything, BD may actually beat SL or PAk in the remaining 2 games. They just need to put their head down go back to the basics.

Posted by   on (March 2, 2014, 9:30 GMT)

My my, i was stunned by the performance of Afghans performance, they will surely beat the world in recent future with proper guidance from top coaches of the world. They got the talent need to be polished further well, as a Pakistani i am so much proud of our brothers. Now we have to teams in the cricket one is Pakistan and other is Afghanistan's. Javed Miandad should have a go with them further as a coach.

Posted by stormy16 on (March 2, 2014, 9:16 GMT)

This is realy an amazing achievement for Afghanistan when you look at everything, Firstly they are a minow in terms of status but more importantly the country is at war and has been for a long time. To even show up at the Asia cup is a major achievement but two good performances including a win against a test nation is nothing short of senstaional. What's more the Afganistan U19 team beat SL in the WC too. Its hard to undertand just what an achievement this when you consider a team like India who have everything going their way, great work Afganistan.

Posted by   on (March 2, 2014, 9:11 GMT)

Being a Bangladeshi fan, let me stress on the fact that Afghanistan's win was NOT any upset. They simply outplayed Bangladesh in almost every department. They were down-the-line and professional. They clinched the victory simply as a better team playing smart cricket. I am very glad to see Afghanistan's improvement in such a short span of time. On the other hand, it's outrageous to see the sheer unprofessional approach of the BD cricketers. If BD cricketers gain back their sense to respect their own talent, they will bounce back anytime! Let's hope for a good comeback when Shakib returns in the next match.

Posted by   on (March 2, 2014, 8:59 GMT)

Well done for the Rising Stars, Afghanistan proved they can upset the big heads and big boys, this was their first entry to the Asia Cup played two matches and almost upset two big cricketing nations, they outplayed the Bangladesh and almost beat Pakistan if Umar Akmal's catch wasn't dropped, they give really a tough time to Pakistan (comedy in cricket was displayed). Well done my boys, GO, GO, OG. You are the team to beat, keep up the momentum and give a hard time to two upcoming opponents and hopefully you can upset them as well. Fingers crossed for your success

Posted by akashhaque on (March 2, 2014, 8:38 GMT)

I really dont know why BD is playing Nasiir??????????

Posted by   on (March 2, 2014, 7:46 GMT)

Afghanistan Won the match against Bangladesh, We belive that they can make so many upset like this in the future too. They have played briliantly against Pakistan and nearly beat them as well. I hope Afghanitan could control their nerves while playing aginst Test Nations. There are some weaknessess which needs to be identified by the Coach work out to overcome the weakness. Kabir Khan is somehow moderate coach, we need a strong coach who can help improve our players attitude. The one who can change their attitude and make them mentally stronger. The one who can know the tactics of batting and fielding. As far as Kabir khan is concerned he was a bowler. ........With the hope that Afghanistan become a test nation and participate in all the events in the future. Thank you

Posted by android_user on (March 2, 2014, 7:33 GMT)

Good that Afghanistan showed they can compete against top cricketing nations. Though it would have been good had they beaten Pakistan. It would habe given them a chance to qualify for the finals and a chance to win the Asia Cup. Last time, Bangladesh played well and ended just 3-4 runs short of what would have been a great win for them.

On the otherside, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are rivals considering their cricket status and it would be nice to see them playing matches against each other.

Posted by   on (March 2, 2014, 7:29 GMT)

Well, they have only one Coach, if the assign in international standard coaches, for Batting, Bowling and Fielding I am sure in a very short time they reach to higher destination

but still the way they played congrats for them

Posted by Fast_Track_Bully on (March 2, 2014, 7:05 GMT)

It is not an upset as it was predicted. Some B fans hiding their agony by commenting against India.lolz. They are trying to prove something which even they donot know! accept that Bd played poorly and Afgan were brilliant. Congrats to Afgan.

Posted by   on (March 2, 2014, 7:04 GMT)

i liked it..................well played Afghanistan........................

Posted by   on (March 2, 2014, 6:52 GMT)

Excellent performance by Afghanistan, They turned on the heat, when Bangladesh tried to lay back on their laurels restricting the visitors to 90 for 5 at one stage. I suppose it is a bitter lesson for the home team. All top teams namely the big 3 in this tournament will keep give serious thought to complacency. it is unfair to state that the home team was outplayed but it is fair to state that Afghanistan had a greater passion for winning. The Bangladeshis looked limped without Shakibul Hassan and Tammim Iqbql, hence this is not a good sign for the Tigers.Remember Mushfiqur is only human, he can not rescue the rest of the batting unit all the time. The Afghans look cricketers and that's great. World cricket needs a gutty performance against a Test playing nation by a relatively new cricketing nation with limited facilities. Well done Afghanistan my limited space in penning down my comments restricts me from showering the rich praises that u truly deserve. Stay focused

Posted by senthilshanmu on (March 2, 2014, 6:51 GMT)

As per Bangladesh beating India is not an upset, likewise Afghanistan beating Banladesh is not an upset. Keep up the work Afghans.. Good job

Posted by FrenchCricketFan on (March 2, 2014, 6:45 GMT)

Well-done afghan , your balling is pretty good but batting is not good as a whole , yes there are couple of good batsmen but BD has very poor balling so they are not the right team to test your batting. I am impressed the pace you are improving and I hope you fix your batting soon becuz thats the only thing you need now to become a strong team. Bd people dont get too disappointed becuz your batting is on the right track , only balling is poor. This game they didnt bat well, batting seem inconsistent but these new young faces momenul , anamul , shamsur , marshall ayoub etc are very very talented and promising lads but the only thing keeping you down is your balling, must upgrade your balling. Afghanistan made 200+ from 90/5 and the same thing happened against srilanka - this proves something massively wrong with balling but I am sure once you upgrade the balling things will be alright. Zia is such t20 material , if he is not selected for t20 wc then the selectors must be selected.

Hope this historic win of Afghans will be a lesson to our Nepalese team for up coming T20 world cup.

Posted by AltafPatel on (March 2, 2014, 6:40 GMT)

This quickest victory by any new team around the world. When it took decade for teams to register first win against major teams, Afghan done it in just 4th match, and would have been in 3rd match if Umar Akmal would not have been dropped on 28. Wish you all the best Afghans for rest of the tournament.

Posted by AltafPatel on (March 2, 2014, 6:38 GMT)

Afghans showed their brave on cricket ground as well. They showed they never fear by anyone in any form of the encounter.

Posted by NP_NY on (March 2, 2014, 6:36 GMT)

A real lesson for BD fans. India, SL and Pak fans trash talk about each other, but all these teams have proved themselves. All of them have won world cups and other major tournaments. BD only got test status because the other Aisian teams supported them. BD hasn't achieved anything significant and has constantly under-performed but still keeps talking down better teams like Ind, Pak and SL. This is why they are not getting any more support from fans from other Asian countries. Thanks Afghanistan for putting BD in their place.

Posted by   on (March 2, 2014, 6:36 GMT)

Congratulations to all afghans, We have a very good bowling lineup but we don't have a good bating, we need to hire a batting coach as well, but any how Weldon young boys, you have proved to the world that you guys are the best in cricket as well.

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (March 2, 2014, 6:36 GMT)

I am surprised to see Afghan bowling speed. They need a proper bowling coach and they can bowled out any team in the world. Still they got 18 out of 20 possible wickets, which are more than anybody else in the tournament. I believe sharpoor should follow Wasim or Aamir(in bowling only) but not to Junaid as he is going round the wicket too much.

Posted by   on (March 2, 2014, 6:12 GMT)

Most of them are playing cricket for long time, many of them are regulars in major Pakistani domestic teams.

I am looking forward to get comments and reasons from BD Fans for this defeat!! It's not a big deal that big countries are defeated by small one and it happened in past too!!! Only reason it's special because it has shown the true standing and quality of the BD team to their fans!! For them their batsmen, bowlers, fielders and all-rounders are world best!! May be better then Sobers, Sachin, Imran Khan, Lillee, Warne, Murli!! You name it and they will have a local equivalent!! It's high time BD should focus on doemstic structure and play more 4 days game with A-Teams!! Other wise they wil remain a minnow forever!!

Bangladesh don't deserve to be playing Test Matches. They have proved this time and again!!

I think its time for the big 3 (BCCI,ACB and ECB) to act on this.

Any thoughts fellow boarders?

Heartiest Congratulation Afghanistan! There are some wise comments from many fans as how to support Afghanistan by allowing their players to participate in domestic tournaments in India, Pakistan & SL, and that ICC taking serious measures to support them financially and otherwise. The Afghanis people have suffered enough violence and this is a good opportunity for the Cricket loving world to support them. Hope ICC, Ind, Pak & SL will take proper actions to develop/assist Afghanistan cricket.

Who are talking against BD , our day will also be there . Its just a one bad day . If you want to go back to history read after How many matches India won a match and a test match and also other teams . So saying those will not prove anything . It was great game of cricket . Afgan played well. And hope Afghanistan will continue this so we will see another team coming up . We don't want to see cricket only in limited countries we want more team . You never know a bad day when comes . So please think about ur self and team before comment . All the best to Afghanistan . And BD will bounce back . Thanks

I alos read the comments made by Mishfiqur on the shamefulness of loosing to Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. First of all the Mishfiqur and his team and management needs to understand the superiority of many cricketing nations. They have being riding on hype and a wave created by themselves and this is what heppens when all start crashing down. I wa slsoe surprised to find that the undertone mentioned when speaking off Sri Lanka. During the histroy of Ban Vs SL matches they have played 36 martches where Sri Lanka won 31 ad bangladesh won only 4 with 1 no result. Hmm. Keep the arrongance to you my freind. Mushfiqur, you are showing what a 'terrible captain' you are with zero professionalism. Starts performing before making bold statements. Well done to Afghsnistan, they have a lot to boast because they have palyed consistant cricket throughout last 2 years. . may be on their day they will beat Sri Lanka as well.

We pumped them with some brilliant bowling spill. We are the next team to beat all top test playing nations. A caution bill for the rest.....

Posted by android_user on (March 2, 2014, 4:21 GMT)

The bowlers for afghan team are extremely impressive. They would soon be a force to tenon with. And the batsmen are showing great temperament.

Posted by Tharunmedini on (March 2, 2014, 4:18 GMT)

@India_ANY_track_bully, it's too early to comment on Afghanistan winning WC in 15 years. But if they improve on catching and rotating strike, they are no less than a good test nation.

Posted by CricketLifer on (March 2, 2014, 4:18 GMT)

Can't really see this as an upset. Bangladesh is really not that good, they were given test status in a hurry without much readiness. Afghanistan on the other hand is improving with each match they play. If only they can hold onto catches they can be even more dangerous.

Posted by android_user on (March 2, 2014, 4:12 GMT)

Feels good when a young and upcoming cricketing nation is able to compete against test playing nations. And for Afghanistan, feels even better !! considering the situation in their country is not the most conducive environment for cricket. Hearty Congratulations to Afghanistan. They looked like cricketers which I was doubting when the competition began. Especially with the past experiences of having Hong Kong and UAE look so out of place in this tournament

I Congratulate not only to Afghanistan for this victory but to the whole Asia as a new shining cricket star rose from Asia and it is a good new for Asian cricket.... I hope Afghanistan plays its own style cricket (aggressive ) against India and Sri Lanka and i am sure they will beat those two as well.. Good luck my heroes!!!!

DK missed a stumping chaance...so I should say SL won by luck???/

Well Done Nabi and team. Maybe BD considers beating India might not be an upset for them, hope they consider this loss as big upset for them at least. Congratulations to Afghanistan for pulling off spectacular win. There were few catches dropped but nevertheless, we can't take the credit back from Afghanistan team. This will definitely act as source of inspiration/motivation for other non test cricket playing nations.

Posted by MeijiMura on (March 2, 2014, 3:34 GMT)

A fantastic performance. Bangladesh might have been missing Tamim, Shakib and Mortaza and they lost Gazi through injury early on in the match, but Afghanistan were also playing without some of their best players. Neither their best batsman nor best bowler from the match against Pakistan played and they dropped five catches, yet they still won comfortably. Things will only get more uncomfortable for Bangladesh. They will finish last on home soil in this Asia Cup. They are also at serious risk of failing to qualify for the T20 World Cup on home soil later this month as they will have to beat Afghanistan to qualify. They will play Afghanistan for a third time in next year's World Cup Down Under in conditions that will heavily favour Afghanistan's pace battery. Afghanistan is going to leave Bangladesh behind in the cricketing world. If Afghanistan learn how to catch, run properly between the wickets and turn the strike over they will win more games than they lose, no matter who they play.

Well the battle of the minnows more than lived up to the-non existant-hype!The Afghans-lesser of the 2-coming trumps.A saving grace for whats been a boring and mediocre fare in Asia Cup so far.Hope todays m hyped game can be same. But Pak are too strong.

@rawalian17 , hey bro how can you define a team better when they won only 1 match? Afghanistan played well & they got what they deserve. In 1999 WC, BAN beat PAK,did it prove that BAN was better than PAK???

Paper tigers fell again. Why they are full members when they win rarely like other associate teams. One more thing that the word upset does not fit in title as this was not upset almost half people were expecting this to happen as Afg is far better than bd may be not in cricket but in passion and in faith.

Posted by shripadk on (March 2, 2014, 2:53 GMT)

This makes me wonder though, is it time to rethink the status of Bangladesh? Since 2000, they have just 77 wins and 160 losses in ODIs. They are the only Test playing nation to lose against Kenya, Ireland, Afghanistan and even Canada in this period. No other test playing nation has lost more than once to non test playing nation.

Bangladesh has lost 6 times. That is not enough progress in all these years. And no matter how you look at it, a poor record in international cricket.

It has been 28 years since Bangladesh played their first ODI. 28 years. We are nearing end of their 3rd decade in the format. It has been 14 years since they received Test status. It almost feels like ICC jumped gun in granting test status to Bangladesh. And teams like Ireland and Afghanistan who have shown lot of promise are going to suffer because of that.

Posted by az_ali on (March 2, 2014, 2:39 GMT)

Some achievement Awesome by the babies of ODi cricket, they will get better, another team that might not play on "Home" Soil for a very very long time. Maybe next year some of these boys will get pounced on by the IPL or other cartoon cricket Circuses

For now they are going to be everyone's second favourite team.

Posted by web_guru2003 on (March 2, 2014, 2:23 GMT)

I do not want to be too harsh about BD and ZIM but I have been saying all along that AGF is much better team than BD & ZIM (in limited overs games). Wait till they get some exposure and experience against TEST sides.

Posted by akashhaque on (March 2, 2014, 2:21 GMT)

A well deserved win for AFG. congrats. BD need to learn how to bowl in death overs, also when the batsman is hitting them all around. It is seen historically that when opponent starts slog hitting they fall apart. Actually we lost the game in our last 10 overs. Also many many congrates to both the umpires who had a great contribution as well. similar LBW decision was turned down against BD was given in favour of AFG. at the same time lets not forget the dismissal of our best player Mushfiq`s dismissal, What a decision, ball was missing the stamps by miles. still no excause, these all are part of BD cricket history, we were always deprived like this. whom to complain???????????????

How good are these Afghanis eh? Hats off to the new guys! Looking forward very much to hosting these guys down here in Australia for the World Cup, and I predict they will be very popular with our home crowd, even when they play us. Their fearless and attacking play is just the sort of thing we Aussies love! Lots and lots of respect from down under, we are looking forward to your visit.

Posted by Vatto on (March 2, 2014, 1:56 GMT)

Bangladesh is just an average side without the 2 somewhat better players in Shakib and Tamim. India were a bit too charitable for them. Now they are going to lose to Pak and SL and finish last. Awesome show by Afganisthan :) Their bowlers were superb. Even restricted pak to less than 260. So they are a quality side and Bangla were a bit too overconfident and deserve this thumping

Posted by _IndiaRocks on (March 2, 2014, 1:40 GMT)

It was nice to watch Mohammad Nabi capt. of Afghanistan giving interview in Hindi post match for Star Sports. He speaks very fluent and have shown very great leadership by bringing himself into bowling in many crucial situations in match. He said his role-model is Captain Cool MSD and whole Afghanistan Team watch India's matches and learn from them. It's a great honor & welcome to Club Blue. 15 years ago when Bangladesh started cricket they were down to earth & many neutral fans cheered for them and their victories but now they are flying in air and boasting way too much for no reason, so Bangladesh is getting hate messages from Ind, Pak & SL. I hope Afghanistan don't follow foot steps of Bangladesh and keep improving game & stay down to earth I am sure they will be cheered by all cricket lovers. Even after country's crisis and no domestic circuit cricket & some players playing in Pakistan, these guys have shown great feat. Respect to Afghanistan Young Cricket Team. Cheers from India.

Posted by   on (March 2, 2014, 1:15 GMT)

Amazing cricket by Afghanistan. The personality, physique and looks of these Afghan players are no different from that of the Australian, English or South African cricketers. With that said they will soon become a test playing nation if they carry on like this. Yes, I agree they will win either a t20 or big world cup slowly but surely....

Posted by Prema1948 on (March 2, 2014, 1:05 GMT)

There is nothing to worry for BD you have a very good young side, good administrators & intelligent media, would come good with time. Openers being over causes let the Team down. However in a tight situation like that, the decision given against Anamul Haque is not correct, it should have been gone in favour of the batter as in the case of Mathew's LBW decision on the previous day.

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (March 2, 2014, 0:41 GMT)

Congratz to problem-torn Afghans for winning against us! Morning shows the day and we know what's coming up for the rest of the AC matches for us, BD fans. We were too mean to NZ after beating them and were bragging out by tagging it as so called "Bangla Wash". But when we lose, we always come up with good excuses and blame it to someone or something else. Any Bangladeshi questioning our own test status is treated as a traitor. Such blind emotion, being disrespectful to losing side, taking non-test playing nations not seriously, ignoring facts such as our test match win-loss ratio, staying in the state of denial will never let us establish ourselves as a strong cricket nation. Love for cricket alone is not enough, a right mindset is.

Posted by Dhutugemunu on (March 2, 2014, 0:38 GMT)

This is not an upset at all. Yes. BD is Officially a Test team or a Full member. But in reality, BD is a Pseudo-Test team or a Semi-Associate member. This actually shows where BD belongs to. On the other hand people should not be in hurry to put Afghanistan in ODI category. We all know that BD got Test status prematurely after winning an ODI against Pak in WC99. Even Kenya got ODI status after winning against WI in WC96. Where are the Kenyans now? In this case Afghanistan won against BD which is not a real Test level team. Afghanistan should wait some time and improve more before getting permanent ODI status.

two major matches left, iam worried about the batsman, Stankzai and Shanwari can not be there always. other toporder must contribute too against sl &ind.

hope Hamid, Dalwat, shapoor, play all. Ashraf should be left out. a batsman should get his place. he is not someone to bowl 10 overs.

Posted by vishwa1111 on (March 2, 2014, 0:24 GMT)

Difference--- Bangladesh came to the tourlament to lift the asia cup by beating giants in world cricket, acting like they r world class players and arrogant on other players..... Afgan came to the tourlament to enjoy their cricket and to see where r they in world cricket....

That pace bowler Hassan's interview show's how hamble man he is and whole afgan team r hamble and they never go beynd their margin...After even win their r no huge celebrations....I think ICC should consider this seriously and cancel the test membership of bangladesh and give it to afgan...but I don't think that will happen because bangladesh suppoted big 3 proposal.... .Well played Afgan and enjoyed it very much...From SL

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (March 2, 2014, 0:08 GMT)

This is not an upset in my opinion. Afghanistan and Ireland are on a par or even ahead of Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. This will happen more and more. Great for cricket.

No point in celebrating ODI wins. Test cricket is the real cricket and tests wins are the one that matter.

Afghanistan need to concentrate on tests.

At this rate BD is going to lose not only its test status, but ODI status too. The relegation scheme should be in place for betterment of cricketing standards.

The first thing to say is that this is a very special day for Cricket and Afghanistan especially. They have shown enormous potential and hopefully they can continue their progress in Cricket and soon play against the top teams frequently.

I feel for all the Bangladeshi fans, as they are very good fans and support their team at all times, I hope that their players step it up and don't put up any more dismal performances. Bangladesh have relied heavily on Mushfiqur, Tamim and Shakib very much in the last few years and with Tamim and Shakib not playing, this team looks out of depth. I still believe that they have enough talent in their team and in the country to improve and prove to others that they should be a test playing nation and are competitive. I hope they perform well in the T20 WC in a few months time! Very excited to see how Afghanistan do against SL and India, and how they perform against the other test playing nations in the future. Well done Afghanistan! :)

@Ammo666, "if IND can win with only 6 balls remaining against BD & then if BD loses to Afg struggling in chasing 254 then IND & AFG doesn't have much difference" , "BD has beaten NZ and NZ has beaten others so BD is better than others" ... This is cricket not mathematical equations. You are one talking like a kid here. And did you say BD players never talk big before matches? really??? Since you think cricket is same as maths you have been doing in your school, here is one question for you. Since AFG has now beaten BD, and some associates have beaten AFG in the past, so all those associates are now better than BD correct?? Go back to your classroom and solve this and be back after 5 years when BD somehow 'upsets' some big team. If not for BCCI's vote politics, much deserving teams like Kenya would be playing test cricket now instead of this sorry team BD.

Posted by ifti71 on (March 1, 2014, 23:03 GMT)

Fans & Followers of "BIG 3" cricket teams are dying to see their teams in action against Bangla Team :). If Bangla team continues like this then BCB will regret the decision to vote against FTP as no one wants to play with bottom team due to lack of interest & revenue. We recently learned the hard way that its just the revenue that matters :)

It's not surprising at all. Bangladesh simply can't play cricket. Can't bat and can't bowl. Individual performance is not enough to be in the big league.

Afghanistan beating Bangladesh was simply a matter of time. In the next 5 years, they will beat Bangladesh, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, more regularly.

What Bangladesh needs is a strong captain in the calibre of Arjuna Ranatunge, Sourav Ganguly or Allen Border. In the early 90's SriLanka was just like Bangladesh, i.e. full of talent , but little results to show . When Arjuna became the captain we changed almost overnight. Ever since Arjuna became the leader Srilanka never took a back step. What is admirable about him was that he was not even the best player in the team . But he knew how to fight and more importantly , he led lfrom the front. Arjuna brought self belief to a young team convincing them that they are as good as any if not better. For Bangladesh's sake I hope they find their own Ranatunge sooner than later.

Absolutely excited here for Afghanistan's effort to destroy Bangladesh's false ego. Bangladesh team will remain a innow for next 50 years because of their unmatched and useless self boasting. They are immature and untalented bunch of players and there record speak for it self.

And Bangladesh fans, just check ICC rankings: R. Ashwin is World's Top Test allrounder not some Shakib Hasan. And Mohammad Hafeez is Top rank one day allrounder. Wake up and Go Check!!

First of all, I want to congratulate Afghanistan for their excellent performance. They deserved to win this game, and they got the result. They are definitely a solid team that can improve rapidly in the years to come. I am very happy for them and the people of Afghanistan. That being said, I think some people need to slow down in saying that they are automatically better than Bangladesh and can easily beat them at any turn. Please don't forget that we played without some of our best players in Shakib, Tamim and Mashrafe. Well done to Afghanistan for taking the opportunity and winning this match, but if we were to play again with both teams at full strength, I think the result may be different.

They are much tougher with tall bodies and they have the potential to produce world class fast ballers in the near future. The day is not far away when Afghans will be the new legends of the cricket game .. so stop blaming Bangladesh cricket players it is matter of the nature

The 11 Afghani players and they Pakistani coach Kabir Khan broke the hearts of the hosts Bangladeshi passionate cricket crowd with their brilliant batting and bowling to win their first match against an Tests playing country. Lets hope the Afghani team will beat Bangladesh team again soon. Unlike the Bangladeshi Cricket Team who beat the Pakistan team in the 1999 World Cup to win their first major match. The longer BD fans stay in a state of denial, the harder it is for them to put their act together. There is a big difference between staying positive and denying the facts. It is a wake up call for BD to go back to the basics and improve on their shortcomings rather than issuing nonsense comments about established teams. Lets accept the fact that BD does not deserve Test status because there is no point playing against the teams you dont have any chance of putting up a good show. BD should play more matches against associate nations and should not look down upon them. Had they accepted this reality, it would have made them a better team after competing at International circuit for such a long time. Cheers!

Congratulations Afghanistan for this stunning performance, now I firmly believe that Pakistan should seriously think about planing a 3 match one day international series against Afghanistan as they proved that they are certainly a better side than Bangladesh. Pakistan not only can get attention worldwide about their security that they can arrange good security but it also good for there economy because people are very much hungry to see their stars in their home grounds,,,

Who said catches win matches??? WoW Afghan tigers! tremendous show! Hats off..A see saw game which turns out to be thriller with lots of chills and excitement..Afganistan have proved themselves to be a B team of Pakistan :P they fought like tigers..when situation gets under control they suddenly starts panic and drop catches while choked in batting aswell..,but they manage to win in a thriller..Afgan players trained in Pakistan..We pakistani fans are proud of our Afghan brothers and always cheers for them..that support can even see in pakistan vs afghanistan matches and when afghanistan players played in pakistani domestic they always supported by Pakistani crowd..where as Bangladeshi crowd and Indian crowd only supports their team..and they are lack of sportsmen spirit..when ind or ban bowlers get hammered by opponent team their crowd gets sooo quite that it seems that one of ind or ban player DIED! :P

Guys, mark my words.... Afghanistan will lift the world cup in the next 15 years... maybe even lesser than that. My second favourite team :))

One win & another lost. It is the rules of cricket. Any team anytime anywhere win or lost the game if they play well or bad. We should think that, the game build up better relation between two nation. So lost or win no matter.......... <3

A really talented team comes in Aisa cup this time. I dont think afghans can reach the final this time but i believe till the next asia cup, afghans will have the equal chances to win the title. A very good entry in international circket, and for bangladesh in my opinion ICC should taken back their test staus and limited them to t20 and one day cricket as they had almost 10 years since they got full membership of ICC and there is no improvement in BD team.

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 19:57 GMT)

An excellent PERFORMANCE keep it up Afghanistan the hunger for the Win, made this possible they have long way to go, be consistent work hard its good for Cricket that another force can build up in few years, hope they continue perform well, WC T20 and next year WC 2015 , Good Luck!!!

Time to call Afg team "tigers". Like the Indian tiger( also called tigris, with 2000 tigers estimated in Ind out of 2500) , they were relentless in their attack and played wit great elegance and bravery. They deserve the epithet. Go tigers!

Posted by LionsofLanka on (March 1, 2014, 19:49 GMT)

ICC was correct about review the status of BD cricket but politics played important role to retain the test status of BD. Having said that Afghanistan, Ireland & Holland are very fast improving & definitely better than BD team. Congrats to Afghanistan for your heroics. It was bad luck in previous game other wise it would been 2 out 2 now. ICC immediately should granted Afghanistan permanent ODI status to permit in multi nations series to participate which are organised by some countries.

Congrats to Afghanis. I guess its time for the retired players from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, to guide and structure cricket in Afghanistan. This progress has to be sustained. Otherwise this team is gonna be lost in history like Kenya or Bangladesh. ICC should also supervise the progress of the team.

But for the dropped catch... Lol. Catches win matches, since they didn't catch, no question of winning. Pakistan ZINDABAD the creator, mentor and coach of Afghanistan cricket.

Thank you everybody for encouraging the Afghan cricket team. They really did well today. I am happy not because our team won the match, but because this has brought a smile on the faces of the people of Afghanistan. Sport brings people closer no matter what nation, race, religion they belong to. So lets take sport as a moment of entertainment not war as some friends do.

Cricket teaches us planning, strategy, team work, hard work, patience and confidence. It does not teach hatred.

Love you all!

Kudos to Afghanistan !! They are a very good bunch of talented cricketers and with experience they would grow. They have an impressive bowling unit with great variety, have great hitters but they must learn how to rotate strike when bowling is good. The dropped catches i feel was mostly due to dew conditions and am confidenrt that they will improve cz thr ground fielding was good. Of all the things the best part was their humbleness. The way they celebrated after win, the way the captian Mohd Nabi talked shows that they have hunger to do more and arent satisfied yet. As for Bangladeshi fans ..... Shakib bans is perfectly valid and BCB is right in banning him. You cant suport that wicked behaviour if u r true cricketing fan. Also saying that BD team is useless and whole team should change etc etc isnt right. From what i observed is that BD has many good talented batsman n Left arm spinners but they never mature and get out after good starts. To be at top u need to be consitent!!

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 19:22 GMT)

why is this called an upset ?? o.O

Posted by android_user on (March 1, 2014, 19:20 GMT)

There is something seriously wrong with Bangladesh cricket. If one read cricket history, Sri Lankan were able to win world cup in less than 15 years into test cricket. I think Afghanistan is a very good side and can predict they will follow Sri Lankan footsteps but I don't see Bangladesh cricket going anywhere if they government keep interfering into this major sport a common Bengali loves to death. Sorry all Bengali fans, I believe you have very good and extremely talented individuals who are NEVER able to play as a team.

Posted by NP_NY on (March 1, 2014, 19:20 GMT)

@Herath-UK: SL is not the best side in Asia, it's not even the second best side. On any given day, any team can beat any other team, even BD has beaten SL before. But that doesn't mean that BD was a better team than SL then. Until SL wins the final, SL will only be the third best team in Asia after Pak and India. Inda is 9-3 against SL in the last 12 matches. Pak is clearly a better team as well.

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 19:18 GMT)

Shame on Nazmul Papon for Banning our great player Sakib.Papon must take responsibility..He should be today's Man of the match for banning sakib in this time. He banned sakib in this crucial period of time..

I missed the game but i would love to see Mashrafe Mortaza's face who quoted beating India wouldnt have been an upset...!! Guess this was no upset either :)

Thanks for all the entertainment over the years Bangladesh. You always give depressed fans a reason to chuckle.

As an Indian first of all congrats to Afghans on this amazing win, I have to frankly admit that their bowling looks better than current Indian team. The spirit and aggression resembles Pakistan which is always a treat to watch.I know India will be extra cautious after todays match but on the other hand I feel BD will become fierce now after this loss so Pak and SL should better watch out.

ALL THE BEST TO ALL TEAMS AND MAY THE BEST TEAM WIN, ALWAYS!!!

Start of the srilankan series BD team was thinking of winning against them and capton said they can win against any team on home soil. now this happen. what a shame. well played afgan. look like very soon they will go past BD on the rankings.

Posted by wapuser on (March 1, 2014, 19:00 GMT)

@martin000 dude did you even watch the game india played against SL? If Dinesh Kartik would've stumped sangakara in his 30's india could've won that game. Every game is about luck. So don't need to come out and say shit about Umar akmal catch being dropped. There's always a play in each inning where players take it to another level when they are given a chance.

Posted by HatersAreOrdinary on (March 1, 2014, 18:56 GMT)

i am a bangladeshi and the way our team played really making ashamed to comments here, i am not taking anything away from the afgans but after todays match i am pretty much sure something is wrong in the dressing room. and we are gonna loose all the remaining matches.

Well done Afghanistan! Congrats! A well deserved win. Good to see how cricket can bring joy to a troubled nation where the citizens have little to smile about. The Afghan Cricket manager said that, in the beginning 550,000 Afghans had signed up to play cricket . That number in itself speaks volumes about a bright and exciting future for Afghanistan Cricket. I think I speak for all of my countrymen when I wish Afghanistan all success and best of luck. From a Sri Lankan fan.

This was our 5th lose in a row. I know it looks bad but we are not the only team going through such time. I remember a team that lost 8matches in a row and its shameless fan still claiming that they are the best in the world. So don't lose your heart boys. Chin up, go out and give your best. You always had our support and you always will. We lost to an associate and I know that hurts but there is still a match against a team that's not better than associates so we can still make up for today's performance. Wish you all the best. Insha Allah we will start winning soon :)

@neanderthal Be in your childhood talking about 14 years back & still which already gone bitter & you are still chewing it:D, this is what you can say after all kid...what you are trying to say that only suits INDIA but BD never talks much before the match at least nothing unnecessary & illogical like iND'n fans...if IND can win with only 6 balls remaining against BD & then if BD loses to Afg struggling in chasing 254 then IND & AFG doesn't have much difference..so beating IND for BD & even AFG is simply NO upset..be humble first then expect the same from others or else keep dreaming....better don't come to teach us!

Only 32 runs in it. Bangladesh nearly pulled off an upset.

Posted by AnanthX on (March 1, 2014, 18:29 GMT)

This isn't an upset. Bangladesh have just proved that they don't belong.

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 18:29 GMT)

Thanks to Pakistan they created a monster out of nowhere. Most cricket countries top teams are commonwealth British related countries. Afghanistan was never ruled by Britain now it appears they don't want to by anyone in cricket either. They are warriors in all field. They almost defeated Pakistan also. If they would have done that that means they could be in final. I think the way this Cinderella country progressing in cricket they have shocked the world. Most countries love them because they are hardworking cricketers. If they make Cricket compulsory in schools and set up system to pick up talent at early age soon they could challenge all the major teams. It would be injustice not to give them test nation status like Bangladesh was also given test status after they beat Pakistan.10-15 years ago.

Bangladesh also have to set up a system and they should have leagues from primary schools.Bangladesh have lots of talent but they have to play and beat Asian teams regularly.

Posted by Kavum on (March 1, 2014, 18:25 GMT)

Very good day for Afgan Cricket ,I like Afgan people they are very humble i have one friend he is down to earth so as Afgan fans here well played , yes you have a bowling attack far better than my country India. In BD team i like Mominul Huq , he is a real talent i think ,but he should not throw his wicket to spinners, Ziya ur Rahman is a hard-hitting all rounder a good find for BD

Posted by Jimmyvida on (March 1, 2014, 18:24 GMT)

Great guys! Now beat India. They are not difficult to overcome. They drop catches around half dozen per games and their fielding is worse than any team around.

Posted by troll_dum on (March 1, 2014, 18:22 GMT)

I respect Cricket as a sport even more, as i see Afghanistan as a nation showing their true potential. I do not want Cricket to be in Olympics, if it can provide a smile on faces of people of a country, who are so many are deprived of it. Lets promote Cricket in Africa more so that energies of all the nations are focused on positive actions. We all want this world to be happy don't we!

Heartiest congratulations from India!

Ha ha ha.. So this is what over confidence does to BD. So they were dreaming of defeating India. And to add to it, made silly statements to play mind games with us.. Some sheru guy just wrote that we lost to SL.. So?? Big deal. SL is a world class team. Grow up guys.. BL got a test status on BCCI's recommendation. Anyways, well played Afghanistan. :)

@Bouncer709, The whole world knows you jus got lucky against AFG when they dropped Umar Akmal for 28.Otherwise you wouldn't even have reached 222 what BAN scored today which means you are the weakest of the all. Indian batsmans are not mindless sloggers like your team jas you did against AFG by under-estimating them.Your batsmen don't even know to keep wickets in flat tracks and you calling us Home track bullies. You don't even fit to be a Home Track Bully... Oops!!! Forgot that you don't a home at all!! lol

@ Giri Jagannathan - listen mate don't bring that you all did good with NZ BS .. that was gone and dusted . and SL tour dont try to just bring could , should and would have stuff ... OK SL beat you they just Beat you fair & square .. we SL fans dont wine about the last 4 world cups that we could have won ... so stop it , its time for a reality check. THIS DEFEAT WAS NEEDED FOR BAN to realize what is going on , 6 dropped catches by them but your team still cant pull a WIN on your home soil .

From the start i told you ppl we SL team has nothing to gain from defeating BANG , but BAN do have , what did you all say that you have a record to worry about which was - 16 played 14 lost 2 draws & 0 WINS. NOW AFG has a WIN over you tell me now who has GAINED more and WHO have lost MORE

What i like more about AFG was there celebration after the WIN so gentleman like .. keep it up BOYS of AFG bright future for you all... BANG " We can beat anyteam in home conditions " VICE VERSA DUDE ROFL

This now confirms Sri Lanka's place as the best side in the Asia having beaten all the strong sides one after another. Their consistency of pulling off victories from the critical positions are true of champion sides and which was clearly lacking in the BD side though they are 'supposed' to be a 'major' international side.

in next few years Afgani will beat any side in wCrk as they have natural strongest, tallest,&cool minded players

Posted by RibhavBansal on (March 1, 2014, 18:15 GMT)

Remember before the tournament started, Mushfiqur rahim had said "We can beat any team at home", after that they have been winless for 10 matches in a row now in 2014, the nadir was today when a team which Bangla fans call minnows (real joke) and Bangla fans also say that Afghanistan should thank them for allowing them to play the Asia cup.

I have seen majority of the comments from the Bangla supporters and seriously wonder where do they get their enthusiasm from to call their team tigers, they are no more than cats, who put their tails behind their legs and run away.

Still clinging on to past victories, Yes, u have defeated big countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, but if u check the stats, won against India 3 times out of 34 matches, won against Pakistan once in 39 matches, won against Sri Lanka 4 times out of 37 matches and still say that we are improving is a real display of where the team and the fans are on and off the field.

Congrats Afghanistan. Always nice to see an underdog team win. But one's heart goes out to the millions of fans from the host country who would have been very disappointed today. Their team should have performed better and, perhaps guarded against overconfidence. The Bangla team has two more chances to warm the cockles of their fans' hearts. May today's setback spur them into putting up strong performances in both those games.

ICC will consider giving more matches to AFG in future and will handover the test status to them and test privilege should be banned from BD..Horrible team.... Congratulations to Afganistan. Now the onus is on the ICC how they handle the development of Cricket in Afganistan.

Perhaps the most important thing that India, Pak and SL can do for Afganistan Cricket is to invite them to participate in their domestic first class competitions. If not full team then individual players should be allowed to play of domestic sides in the India/Pak/SL. We should recall that cricket in WI and India was hugely benefited by the experience their player got by playing for the English counties. Same should be done for Afganistan.

In fact, same should be done for B'desh.

Actually why just Afganistan, Ireland needs proper handling as well.

And Bangladesh should really rethink their Cricket and seriously invest in a good domestic setup.

Posted by Vishal_07 on (March 1, 2014, 17:52 GMT)

I might be in a minority here but I don't consider this an upset. BD have been playing cricket for like 15 years or more but all they have to show is an occasional win here or there against top nations. In spite of the fact that they had their top 3 players out but that should be no excuse.

Posted by Legaleagle on (March 1, 2014, 17:52 GMT)

Afghanistan- You beauty!! Absolutely scintillating performance by this team of bravehearts. Considering the turmoil that they have been facing for past several decades, they have managed to perform over and above adversaries. Afghan batsman and bowlers played with courage, character and poise.

Even against Pakistan, they gave a good fight until they came across Akmal's stellar performance.

With regards to pathetic Bangladesh- less said the better. They are below ordinary!!

Bangladesh need not panic yet. They have beaten some top ranked teams in their backyard. Today Afghanistan happened to be the better team and they are improving rapidly. Bangladesh have to produce sone quality swing bowlers and good batsmen if they are to remain a force. Well done Afghanistan. Next time please pouch those air borne balls.

Posted by BowledYa on (March 1, 2014, 17:45 GMT)

I see the Bangladesh fans missing. Where are the Dhakas and the tigers? A few wins at home against NZ and WI and they acted like they were world champs, ignoring the whitewashes at home by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Some humility would be appreciated as acknowledgement. Concentrate on improving and bring the bravado when it can be backed up. Please. And watch out for Ireland and Afghanistan as they will beat you consistently now.

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 17:45 GMT)

I think Bangladesh need a fighter captain, a captain who will reasonably aggressive (when is required) and more importantly who can properly manage the team to fight till the end. Musfiq is a kind of captain who is too much defensive in his approach and compromises too much. I dont think Musfiq is a good decision maker.

Pak and Afghanistan have had tight friendly matches before and they have learned a lot from their bigger brother. I hope Pakistan continues playing with Afghanistan more so in the future! I'm looking forward to see them play against stilanka and india!

It took BD 13 years to win their first match against a test playing nation. Afghanistan has achieved that in just their 4th match, that too against the host country. BCCI, this is the time to show that you really want to promote cricket. Invite Afghanistan for a one day series in India (even a 3 match series). Everyone knows they have earned their place. They have the second best bowling attach in the Asia cup (after Pak), so they may even surprise India or SL.

Bangladesh is a very very disappointing team. If the same amount of money was spend on the Afghanistan team. The will be a team of much high standard then Bangladesh

feeling horrible from last 2 months .. starting from losing to SriLanka Team , now on Asia Cup ... as a Bangladeshi i congratulate Afgan team, they played good , but not extraordinary, BD team could easily beat them,, but due to lost in a row , they loose confidence and also their professional mentality,, but again to say ,, this is not real team ,, this can be called A team,,, where, there is no star player ( Shakib: World no. 1 allrounder, Tamim: dashing opener, Masrafee: experienced bowler) without Mushfiqur Rahim, he is our real tiger current. we 16 crore people are totally frustrated of performance of tigers.... we should come back, May allah help us out from the danger

@getsetgopak - they would have mighty well downed and upset Pak as well if not for missed opportunities, remember you were already down by 5 wickets before getting rescued courtesy of AFG fielding, don't overrate your team. AFG team is good - if they upset India it would be because of their team effort....

Well played Afghanistan, keep playing with this spirit. Cricket needs stronger Afghanistan and it will not be a long when they will get a test status. Ireland,Afghanistan,Bangladesh,Zimbabwe would benefit by playing against each other and an occasional series with lower ranked team (NZ, WI). Good Luck for the future. Yours Well Wisher A Proud Indian Fan

All those ppl mocking Bangladesh, all you're doing is taking away credit from Afghanistan.

If you know your cricket - which by reading comments here on CricInfo tells me that most of you do NOT - you'd have noticed that Afghanistan put up a stellar showing against Pakistan just a few days ago.

It's not an exaggeration to say they would have been disappointed at not winning. The drop catch off Umar Akmal may have cost them the game. In previous T20 contests against Pak, these guys have repeatedly challenged.

Both India and Sri Lanka will have to be on their guard. Afghanistan are not here to make up the numbers. To beat them, you're gonna have to play good cricket. At any rate, congrats to them on a historic win.

to be fair for BD, it is not upset AFG almost beat Pakistan also if not for akmal's hundred, AFG almost chased Pakistan total in batting but could not overcome the three spinners Pakistan had, BD let them get away and let them score 250+ that was the critical point, once they got 250 on board they have the bowling to stop BD. it will good to see how AFG play with India and SL, no one should take them lightly, it is never easy after loosing to a new team people expect you to win against AFG.

Congratulation Afghanistan for very matured display!!! and sorry for Mushfiqur Bhai and Co. Within a 2 months, Bangladesh cricket has gone from a FORCE to a FARCE... What happened?

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 17:26 GMT)

Without Shakib-ul-Hassan BD team is looking like a club team. This is what happens when an entire team revolves around one person. That person becomes the centre of gravity. You take him out and the entire system collapses.

Posted by wapuser on (March 1, 2014, 17:24 GMT)

Owesome bowling attack. Great communication with each other. Never give up. Very passionate. I like the way they played today.

Posted by BowledYa on (March 1, 2014, 17:24 GMT)

Well well well! This is not a surprise. I predicted in cricinfo before the tournament Afghanistan will beat Bangladesh and they have. Afghanistan knew it too and they went for it with confidence. This is not the first time an associate has beaten a main team but to beat them at home convincingly is major. This is a confidence hurdle that Afghanistan has overcome and I predict they will consistently beat Bangladesh now. They have better bowling and fielding and just need consistent batting. Well done Afghanistan, from a next door friend.

How is this an upset when most people could predict the result? If they played a series of 5 matches, AGN will win the series at least by 3-2.

Posted by SportsObserver on (March 1, 2014, 17:16 GMT)

Move away "Tigers", make room for the REAL tigers. BD did get more than their fair share of opportunities, now its time for Afghanistan and Ireland to receive the same. These two are real warrior nations, They have the physical strength, ability and attacking mental ability that I do not see in BD, they have all the ingredients, just need some opportunity and help. They will be a world class team if they get even half the opportunity BD got. I am from Bangladesh, I have had enough of these Peter Pans, Enough is Enough.

Posted by getsetgopk on (March 1, 2014, 17:16 GMT)

I would say well played Pakistan for providing training facilities to Afghans and enabling them to beat Bangladesh. They have a Pakistani coach, Kabir Khan and they are based virtually at NCA Lahore. Most Bangalis and Indians talk alot about support and all that but their real support comes from Pakistan. The job is half done, they need to drown India too to make it perfect. May you improve further, atta boy AFGHANISTAN!!!

Posted by Solid_Snake on (March 1, 2014, 17:16 GMT)

Hahaha..Before the tournament BD fans weer like this ..'We are the best in Asia & we can beat SL,India & Pakistan'..Glad to see that BD back to the place where they belong..

Posted by warneneverchuck on (March 1, 2014, 17:15 GMT)

I began to think that BD can can compete with any team in shorter format in BD despite their average performance. But they shud look at Afghanistan that they have beaten a test side in very short period amd it is certainly an achievement and BD shud seriously look at perofmance and its worry for them

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 17:15 GMT)

Of course Afghanistan team should be proud winning this match, but it does not mean that the team of Bangladesh is a weak team. Bangladesh team has defeated very strong teams, but it is a game and it happens. As an Afghan, I congratulate Afghan team and encourage Bangladesh team that it is a good team.

Posted by kptcs on (March 1, 2014, 17:15 GMT)

Congrats Afghanistan on ur victory. Well deserved. As far as BD is concerned, if only they showed their talking skills while playing - they could be champions. I wouldn't want to call this an upset - if I did, then the Afghan captain might take offense like some other captain.

Posted by niazbhi on (March 1, 2014, 17:13 GMT)

Congratulations Afganistan. I am not as much surprised. Bangladesh lacked good fast bowling. Afganistan seems to have better bowlers(if they post a good total, their bowlers may be able to restrict India or SL as well). Bangladesh seems to dependent on allrounders to bat upto lower order to compete (its not sustainable).

Excellent result for Afghanistan! However, the dignity which they showed in their celebration was unmatched. An associate nation winning their first match and no running around wild, no cuss words, just sincere handshakes and hugs. Guess, other teams need to learn from them! Afghanistan have made a statement here - which is both bold and beautiful! All the best for the future!

Congrats to AFG! It seems like they have played above their potential, and it has led to a victory against BAN today. Their bowling looks good. Strong fast bowlers who hit the deck hard and they got batsmen who are attacking and counter-attacking, depending on the situation. Their progress (they were in WCL Divison 5 in 2008) is quite simply Phenomenal! Im not a Bangladeshi, but Im sure some of them must feel embarrassed by this. I dont recall BAN being anywhere near as competitive during their first four years as Test Nations, let alone their first four matches. Ireland & Afghanistan should be given Test Status within the next 5 years, once they have established first-class competitions in their respective countries.

Hats off to Afghanistan.....Afghanis played only 28 ODI matches and they beat a test playing nation....Feeling ashamed as an Bangladeshi Supporter.....

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (March 1, 2014, 17:10 GMT)

I was really happy to see the Afghanistan team humbly accepting the victory over a test playing nation, and that humbleness and hard work has paid off for them, but if this was the other way around the Bangladesh team would have ran in to the middle of the ground and made a mess of a celebration, And Bangladesh should understand that cricket is not based on one player so they should stop claiming that they lost because the were short of two overrated players, and accept this loss as a learning. Regards from SA Thank you

Awesome win by Afghans. Hopefully they beat India too :P

BTW where is that Mortaza who said beating India is not an upset nowadays? LOL And Bangladesh fans wanted Shakib out for next years, see what happens if he is out for 2 matches. That team is hopeless without Shakib.

By the way what the BD coach is doing.(in fact no one knows why and how this guy is the coach)will the board take any action

Posted by shripadk on (March 1, 2014, 17:07 GMT)

This does not really surprise me. I said it 4 years back that we need Afganistan playing proper tours with test playing nation. They were good back then, too good to be an associate team. And they are showing that they belong here.

They dropped too many catches today. They got away with it because they were playing against Bangladesh. They did not get away with it against Pakistan. In fact, they had good chance at real upset last time around as well had they caught Akmal and restricted Pakistan to low total.

But none of this takes anything away from their performance. They should be extremely proud of themselves. I as a Indian is proud of those boys and what they have achieved today. But I expect much better show in the future from them.

I hope BCCI invites them for tour in India even if it is with India A side and include their players in next year's IPL auctions. Expect similar good show against India and Sri Lanka. If not win, I want to see them product a good show.

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (March 1, 2014, 17:07 GMT)

Congratulations to Afghanistan for a historic win. They are quickly showing the world that they are a team on the rise. By beating BD today, Afghanistan have sent a strong message to other teams. Commiserations to BD who I thought played poorly once again. I know it's harsh to say this, but I simply don't think BD deserve to play competitive international cricket. The results prove that. If you look at Afghanistan today, they played with determination, composure and a plan. Such traits usually lack within the BD team. I feel sorry for their fans and captain. Mushfiqur Rahim can't do much with such a team. It becomes equally difficult when you have some senior players missing (Shakib, Tamim). But for BD to improve, their management needs to do something about domestic cricket in the country. If your domestic structure is strong, that reflects on your national team. Tough loss to digest if you are Bangladeshi supporter.

Congratulations to AFG. This win will pave the way for many more wins in the future. Continue playing with the unique flair and spirit. AFG has imparted a lesson to other teams as well - you can have the best coaches, best strategies, but at the end of the day its the passion and spirit that you show on the field that counts and wins admirers

As for BD, I wouldn't say get back to the drawing board, but get that passion back. BD still has two more games to go. One against SL w/ whom it has enjoyed many close games in the past so may be it is time to cross the line first in this competition. Other against Pak, which is mercurial. BD fans would expect nothing less than beating these two teams. Was the game against AFG an upset? May be not.

WOW , GOOD performance from whole team. Stankzai. Shanwari gr. job. just bring dalwat along shappor and hamiid hopefully he is going to be fit, drop Ashraf, he is good for 5 overs then he cant really pull it off. and batting should be reconsidered,

Sediq? his role is to make 10-15runs? and Najubullah, ? shezads batting also weak, but he is doing well in keeping and pushing other guys to do hard in field.

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 16:51 GMT)

This is unwise to take back the test status from any country, instead more eligible countries should be added up. Bangladesh lost to an associate member - doesn't mean they will never win again. To make cricket a global game I would rather like to see many other teams having test status like Kenya, Scotland, Afghanistan, Ireland etc.

CONGO my dear AFG. Love from INDIA. BD fans also need not to worry. These things happen.1st u r without Shakib,Tamim and Mushfi.Even in past, teams have lost on consistent basis.like last Asia cup SL won ZERO matches.Last Champns Trophy Pak won ZERO matches.Ind also lost to NZ 0-4 recently. So Chill !

Afg: Excellent bowling unit. And 'okay' batting unit which can always improve.

India and Afghan share good political relations. So what BCCI needs to is first organize matches with Afg team.If main players are busy playing, then Ind-A team consisting of BIG players like Sehwag,Bhajji,Utthapa can be made to play Afg team. This will further develop Cricket in Afg n help Afg Cricket board financially too. Some of them like Nabi can easily be picked 4 IPL. BCCI needs to educate ipl franchisees on this issue.

Thr is so much to learn from Afg fast bowlers for our poor Indian fast bowlers (except Shami, Umesh and Aaron). Shapoor, Dawat and Hamid all 140+ WOW. Afg has announced its arrival

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 16:50 GMT)

Well done Afgan. I really enjoy the batting of last partnership. I saw that some brilliant batsman coming in. And Afgan will be one the the strongest opponent team. And don't worry Tigers will not stay at this position they'll overcome their guilty soon.

First let bangladesh win at home and then speak about india's performance. THis shows winning at home isn't easy , you need to play well. 2007 wc was held at WI and did westindies win it. 2003 WC was held at SA . Did SA win it. Champions trophy was held at England, did England win it. Everyone are jealous about India's trophy glory. Yes away records are poor, but i am sure we are in race to regain 2015 wc. Go India go.

oh mashrafe!! poor guy... he must be cursing himself for that big mouthed interview which he gave! but they deserve this.... just with 2-3 close wins the Bangladesh players started acting like superstars ....I mean shakib is the closest they have to what can be called international material... tamim at times.... for all his tall talk mushfiqur is an average player at best averaging in the early 30s in both tests and ODIs ... similarly mashrafe and tamim too have mediocre records... I still remember tamim speaking sarcastically about dravid after their win against Ind in 2007 wc... they needed this reality check

Indeed this one is not a upset!!! What a play by afghans!!!They really came back from 90/5 to 254/6 with right approach!! Getting ball old and then attacking in last few overs!!! and then their bowling was awesome!!! What they need to worry about is top 4 batsmen need to perform and Fielders need to pounce on catches and half chances!! For Bangladesh!! They were badly beaten!!! No excuses!! They surely were over confident!!!! As Mashrafe Mortaza said that defeating india wont be an upset!!! That reflected their confidence!!! Their fans roared!! They lost to India!!Leave it aside...India is a good team!! But they were defeated by Afghans....just 4 match experienced team!!! That showed that they spoke more than they did....After all Action speak louder than words!!! You have definitely failed!! Failed morally and physically!!

Congratulations to all afghan people WoW! I can't believe afghan tigers I am proud of you guys. For BD I must say poor display from thier players they were acquainted with thier home conditions and afghan dropped many chances of BD batsmen but still they were unable to go over the line. Afghan should have won against Pak if they didn't dropped the catch of Umar akmal I think Afghan need to improve thier fielding. BD best of luck next time .

This is BD decline time but dont know when they peaked? since lot of time they r in international cricket, are they not?

@Prakash_Mishra so you are basically saying through your predictions that India have absolutely no chance of winning against Afghanistan. I am a big supporter of underdogs and I feel that Afghanistan is a very good team but you should not underestimate India like that. They are also capable of a formidable victory

Posted by Tahbee on (March 1, 2014, 16:39 GMT)

Afghanistan will surpass the Bangladesh cricket within 2 years. As a Bangladeshi fan, Im really happy for them because of their progress and Im not hurt like the other blind followers. The bd team has always been a garbage team. This team always "surprises" the dominant teams once or twice a year. dont count series win against West Indies because WI wasn't good and Im sure with Brian Lara and those other legends in the early 21st century would've shattered this team. Actually WI did take bd's 10 wickets for just 51 runs i think in World Cup. It's a real shame that the country did not develop at all since the debut. I really believe in Afghanistan because the team uses motivation from their local conflicts. They are using their local violence as an extra fuel to improve and bring joy to the country's struggling people. Best of luck, Afghanistan in the Asia Cup, T20 cup and the future.

Well played Afghanistan. We have seen some great matches in this Asia Cup

Posted by the_predator on (March 1, 2014, 16:38 GMT)

There bowling attack is equal or better than INDIA's. They just need a finisher like dhoni/mishbah, and a steady batsman who will score consistently (maybe like AMLA/KHOLI). Then this team can beat most of the top ranked nation. Most amazing to me was how they celebrated after they won. It is also heartening to see how their FANS (couple of AFGAN GIRLS) were praying for them. This shows how much passionate they are with cricket. Ramiz raja revealed that 500000 people registered in AFGAN to play cricket. I am sure they will find couper of good BATSMAN.Your future is bright.

Where are those BD FANS who used call them selves world beaters? Your so called outragiously talented NASIR seems to have lost interest in cricket. After trying so hard on 5th attempt he got out. Razzak thought he was out on a evening stroll. Your hero sakib does not know how to behave in front of every one. if it goes in this way, in couple of year BD beating AFGAN will be a MAJOR upset.

well someone said its not an upset to beat india anymore .. i would like to hear from them now .. bd still and probably will always remain minnows ....

Posted by sheru-sher on (March 1, 2014, 16:36 GMT)

Bangladesh should be grouped in the minnows class and they should be demoted from a Test playing nation to an associate cricket nation. In all the years they have been allowed to be a TEst nation they have learn't nothing and progressed nowhere .It is a shame as they can only compete with Zimbabwe . Instead of the BCB trying to improve the standard of cricket in that country the Board is linked to controversies .Compared to Shri Lanka a smaller country , Shri Lanka improved immensely since they got Test status and even won a world cup T50. Bangladesh cricket is a joke for other team cricketers to pile up records in runs and wickets .India has been a beneficiary of this nonesense as Indian players pile up "TEST" records against them which dilutes the real "TEST" records. Demote Bangladesh to minnow now and put Ireland or Afgan in test status.

BD captain said "we can win any team in home" but look at your result. Please rethink before talk. your team is not a world class team and please learn from Afgan. For BD fans - your colors and reactions are too much and you team cant do anything. you guys need to wait for decades for a single win

Posted by rsmehdihasan on (March 1, 2014, 16:35 GMT)

I see in the middle time of the innings when singles should come easily or odd boundaries. then BD batsman starts and struggles for runs. when one got out then other batsman creates panic and got out. Too much hype from media or fans also creates panic. It is all about concentration and stick to plan and execute it. Others are learning from that but BD still from the first test match batting collapse they are struggling in those situations. When batsman hit a boundary then go for again in 2nd ball . it looks they are playing for spectator pleasure not for the game plan.same for bowler , when they are in back foot suddenly they starts to ball loose delivery and lapsing their concentration. When someone missed a catch then whole team goes down. these players need to face similar, tuff situations and conditions in domestic circuit then they can realize how to cool their nerve in tense situations. Blaming and excuses are not working for BD'S favor as well.

Cricket should add countries like USA, China, other European teams along with South American teams in order to truly make it a global game. Im tired to watching these 11 test teams play every year. Add some new spice to it. Im really happy for Afghanistan. Now they can actually play the game of cricket without any fear. They dont need test status because Test cricket is a very boring game to watch from a fan's standpoint I hate watching the same game for 5 days straight. Cricket should be oriented more toward T20 contests. A lot of people in the United States, including me, dont watch ODI's and Test matches because these games take too long and are often boring. We want to watch a sport filled with action. Just look at NBA, NFL, rugby, Soccer, NHL or any other sport except baseball.

very poor performance to BD who are the runners-up previous Asian Cup did not lost all credits made so far by losing consecutive 4 ODi losses to test capped countries like SL,IND and those were excusable, but that time as a test nation,BD having the early 5 (90/5 over 26.5) should have to dismiss the rest 5 batsmen within total of 200.Anyway,You can practice with other teams like UAE,Nepal,Namibia and PNG.Hat off to AGF with nabi to playing good cricket and being amazingly emerging team in Asia.

Posted by indiasucksgobd on (March 1, 2014, 16:28 GMT)

Congratulations to Afghanistan. Unbelievable spirit and determination shown by them. Fully deserved victory, would have been over even more quickly if they had held on to catches. As for Bangladesh it's not a surprise that they are called minnows. Dreadful performance ESP the death bowling and the two openers. Why is nadir trying his hardest to get out? Need shakib and tamim ASAP.

Brilliant win from Aghanistan. To think that most of this team have come from World Cricket League Division 5 in 2008 to beating Bangladesh in an ODI less than 6 years later is incredible. Their rise in world cricket, with all their well documented problems at home , very little infrastructure and no facilities to speak of, is one of the most heartening things I've ever seen in any sport.

Posted by android_user on (March 1, 2014, 16:26 GMT)

Bangladesh were without Tamim and Shakib, Afghanistan dropped 5 catches so it equalizes the equation infact favors bangladesh more! In my last comment, I said that bangladesh r going to lose and their test status should be put in a 4 nation contest along side Zimbabwe Ireland and Afghanistan and I bet, on neutral place, Afghanistan and Ireland both can defeat this over rated team! Bangla should thank Zia slogs who saved him from severe humiliation of losing with bonus point though they still deserve to be humiliated!

Posted by Fahii on (March 1, 2014, 16:26 GMT)

woooowwww, congrats Afghan, BD is not better tha afgh hence this proved here. BD ll end up asia cup in the lower most in point table. Afg players good physique and compared to BD they are too small & tiny players and cant excel in this filed.

Posted by pitch_curator on (March 1, 2014, 16:25 GMT)

This will keep some of the bangla fans who were shouting in these forums quiet. This was not luck. In fact luck went against AFG. They lost the toss and dropped five catches. Still they handed BD an absolute thrashing in their own country. AFG played a fearless entertaining brand of cricket. Phenomenal hitting in the slog overs and disciplined bowling although the catching and throwing was abysmal. I could not quite figure out why some of the BD middle order players other than Mushfiqur were in such a hurry. You need to respect good balls even if you are Bradman. I had seen Nasir Hossain an year and half ago and was impressed. But judging by the way he played today, I can easily see that all the adulation has gone to his head. In the situation he had come in, why was he trying to hit out? There were more than 25 overs still left. Some of the BD players are aping Warner/Sehwag etc during interviews. That is fine. They should also see how these players back up the talk on the field

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 16:25 GMT)

Despite dropping 7 catches we still deservedly managed to win today. The game should be won with bonus point but we dropped so many catches and few misfielding allowed Bangladesh back into the game. Our bowlers were class especially Nabi and Hassan and I salute Stanikzai and Shinwari for their match winning partnership. I hope we keep our intensity the same way when we play India and SriLanka. To Include Afghanistan in this competition brought entertainment and joy to all cricket fans. I am proud of my Team

Just checked Afghanistan's ODI record. I think they have won just over 60% of their matches against fellow associates, which means having beaten a Full Member team, they are now qualified for the One Day Rankings :)

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 16:24 GMT)

BD players should walk the talk not just talk. Accept the reality. You are improved minnows but yet minnows. You are undone by a new member. Really feel like laughing out loud remembering what Musrafe said before the match against India. In your home ground, in front of your home team you will end up 4-0 in this tournament. I still question your test status.

First of all, Congratz to Afghan brothers..I knew this would happen..still I cant believe that BD haven't learnt anything from their 14 years of cricket..They are just an ordinary team with ordinary players.. Please BD fans dont blame your board for banning Shakib..He is not a super player as you all think..Just understand your status and please stop putting some lame excuses on loosing the game..you all have overestimated yourselves ( " we can beat any team in our pitches ") I dont wanna say that test status should be remove from BD, but they are not deserved it. There are countries like Afgan, Ireland who are waiting to play test and they are performing way better than over hyped BD players..

Posted by android_user on (March 1, 2014, 16:17 GMT)

Afghanistan has improved so rapidly that its hard to believe.. they are fit unit and have good pace bowlers with a couple of good upcoming spin ners..but for me the thing which differntiates them from other associate members is there commitment and the amount of respect that they give to their teachers (Coaches).

Congrats to Afg for a fine game and win. Although we are sad today, it's a hay day for bangla haters, who are coming down in flocks; they typically don't show up when bangladesh performs the other way around, calling that to be an upset: that's the typical tag of the bangla haters, not cricket lovers. And this loss of bangla may not be an upset either. Despite playing at home, all needs to remember that the team was playing against two teams in this game, - the BCB and the Afg. And it shows in the result. It's time for the BCB to join the Afg to rejoice, at the same time, the banglas fans to get on to the bcb for their misdeed of forcing key players aside in this game to bring such disgrace to the nation.

I am such a die hard fan of Bangladesh I even look for some positives in the possible hardest moment. But now I think I am looking in blank. there's nothing positive in this team. BCB needs to think completely different for the team. They need to think strategically. It is old habit habit of BCB to lift the outcomes on some players like they did by snatching Sakib's captaincy last time. Complete approach means to have changes in the managerial committee. They need a new coach as player's permonfance shows a coach approach. They need a special batting coach and a specialist fielding coach. Most importance they need DRS system for Bangladesh. they are always the sufferers of Umpire's wrong decision. Just one request for BCB don't vent the failure on some batsmen. it's not their fault. They are just doing what they are learnt to do.

Bangladesh cricket team is a total show off.Them missing some of their key players is true. But giving away 107 runs in the last 10 overs can't be justified because of it.Their opponents dropped many chances and they can't make use of it.2 years have passed since they made it to that Asia cup final.A team that has never won a single ICC tournament saying they are on par with India,Pak,and Lanka? They're just making fools out of themselves.Bangladeshi fans need to think again before posting ridiculous comments on the web.Ireland actually deserves the test status more than they do.

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 16:06 GMT)

This match should teach Bangladesh not to talk without performing. WT20 will be exciting since both associates may go through ahead of Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Bangladesh needs to answer questions especially most of their players.

Their new ball attack was phenomenal.Definitely the 2nd best new ball pair after Junaid and Gul in Asia cup.Afgan team has a bright future ahead of them. Good Lesson for All BD cricketers and some fans because , some fans always overrating there players performances . Thats include some BCB members. And also good lesson for big headed players like Anamul and Rabel . If this wins by BD there players jump all over the place . But its great to see how AFG celebrated.

Sorry, that's not an upset. At home, winning the toss, with dew advantage, with opponent dropping dozens of catches ... Bangladesh lost. Congratulations Afghanistan ... they'll be upset for missing bonus point.

Congratulations my dearest Afghanistan team. What a play of great shots by the two Stanikzai and Shinwary - well deserved win.

Good Fight back from Bangladesh. Even though game was lost but remember when two equally matched sides meet, one will have to be victorious.

Ever since Afghanistan started climbing the ladder @ associate level, everyone was looking forward for a clash between Afghanistan and Bangladesh. The anticipation was not only to see how Afghanistan performs against a bottom ranked test team but also to evaluate whether or not Bangladesh deserves the status they currently have.

We got bot questions answered. The rise of Afghanistan cricket is not a fluke and Bangladesh's status will always depend on the back door deals .

Afghanistan has now beaten a test playing nation. Will ICC grant Afghanistan the test status like they did to Bangladesh after winning a one game against a test playing nation?

Today the Afghani Snow Leopards beaten the Bangladeshi tigers.

well played by Afganistan. they played really good and batted well. bowled with discipline once again. asghar made up for his slow start today but this type of thing cant work all the time. so need to rotate strike more. shenwari played a beautiful innings. they bowled good.

but fielding needs improvement. you have to be 100% for all 100 overs. this kind of fielding will not work against top teams.

over all impressive performance. and very good win for them. 1st win against test playing nation and in 4th game.

well done guys

Bangladesh is going to have whitewash on their own home turf in Asia Cup. If Bangladesh can't win against this weak middle-order Indian Team and today against Afghanistan. I don't see them have any chance to win against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, unless Sri Lanka plays their bench players if they are pre-qualified for finals at that stage. It's a downfall for Bangladesh Cricket who didn't progress in past 14years and having Test Status. I am sure in couple of years if Afghanistan keep progressing in Cricket they will steal Bangladesh Test Status. I am sure Ireland and Kenya could challenge Bangladesh for Test status. This Afghanistan team really impressed lots of neutral fans and have huge potential.

It is time to consider their test status....it is time to revoke test status....Some new changes also required in the team and also in the selection committee. Both the team and selection committee is inefficient.

I have no hate for BD but they are waste for Test cric cap, they most boring games are played by BD. The future looks bright for Afghanistan and Ireland and Afghans showed that today. Congrats to Afghanistan. Indian brothers relax and enjoy the game (ICC will make sure you get more games at home to stay at the top). Good to all the Nations.

Thanks Afghan for demolishing Bangladesh, this is what they needed. But those people that continue to bring up '14 years and still nothing' is just a rubbish comment because a country needs to start from somewhere and you will get beaten easily at first. But congrats Afghanistan for the win and wont be suprised if they beat India or SL because they are a spirited bunch of lads and cricket means a lot to them (more than Ireland). Now lets sort the team out... bring Mahmadullah for Gazi, drop Nasir who wanted to just get out and looks like he doesnt want to play cricket anymore. Also Al Amin for Rubel, why dont Bangladesh understand?

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 15:52 GMT)

the question is will mortaza call this an upset or not :P !! will done afghanistan for showing the world what you are capable of ... would love to see the bang fans reaction now haha!!

Congrats Afganistan! Very impressed with your effort and mostly with your captain, Nabi. His fielders were dropping catches, had a bit a poor fielding (but that was due to pressure) and he still played hard and determined. Excellent work. Your praises are well deserved, good luck with the next matches!

this is a sensational performance from AFG. Hats off to them. ICC should seriously reconsider the test status of BANGLADESH.

Posted by NP_NY on (March 1, 2014, 15:47 GMT)

I hope BD and its fans have learnt their lesson here. So far BD has always played as an underdog in every tournament which meant they had nothing to lose. But it does not warrant all those arrogant comments bashing other teams, especially India. Now look what has happened. AFG was the underdog today, they went about their business methodically and really thrashed BD in their own backyard, despite BD winning the toss and despite the five dropped catches. I hope ICC is watching. I also hope India and SL are watching because, if they take these Afghan boys lightly, they are in for a rude awakening.

Bangladesh is bungling the chase!! Eight down! I am highly disappointed with Bangla because they have been playing top tier nations for quite a while now but their progress is in slow motion - If they are progressing at all. Imagine if Kenya or Ireland where given the opportunity that Bangla had been given. Im sure Kenya at least would be pushing most top nations hard.

Posted by android_user on (March 1, 2014, 15:36 GMT)

Posted by prakash_mishra on (March 1, 2014, 15:36 GMT)

oh Afganistan should have defeated Pakistan. Now today they will beat BD and I strongly feel that they have a good chance against India provided few things favor them. I am not saying that they will definitely beat India, but it would be really foolish of us to presume that India will definitely beat Afganistan. I am not very sure of their chances against Srilanka. well I suppose Afganistan will finish with 9 points. Pakistan might lose to India and yet they will have 9-10 points by beating BD (presuming BD will loose against Pak) SL will definitely quailify. If India beats Pakistan and gain a bonus point then they too will have 9 points (though that seems unlikely) ..so two teams with equal points , Pak and Afgans..Pak will progress to Finals with better head to head records against Afgan (As Pak bt. Afgan)..still it will be a well played tournament for Afgans. Or Pak just might get those 4 or 5 extra point against India itself and no debate over Afgan's fate.

Posted by rsmehdihasan on (March 1, 2014, 15:34 GMT)

Dear Bangladeshi media, players and fans why you are making panic before this match and please stop creating panic after this match. This is not the end of the days. If everyone can improve and consistent then why not BD. BCB officials it is a wake up call for you. just sit down and make the domestic cricket the strongest most. Hire the best curator and make the competitive toughest pitches around the country. So next time they can not break down with pressure and when they are used to with this type of pressure situations then with whatever situations they can win from corner. BD players sometime become so exited that they behave like spectators and lapsing their concentration easily.

Because AFG players are humble, BD players are supporters only know how to talk big and ridicule others. What have you guys ever done in last 14 years other than few upsets here and there??

It is a wake up call for BCB. All the cricket officials just sit down and make a strong plan for next 5 years. Make the domestic cricket strong stronger and strongest. Forget about international cricket performance. Make a strong A team. U19 teams should play the toughest bounce wicket in the country, Otherwise nothing will be change.

Is it just me or this afgan bowling attack looks better than Indian bowling attack (than miles actually)....I think even India should follow such a bowling scheme. The resembles of this team to the Indian team of mid 2000 is just uncanny..Go afgan win this one please you were very close to win against Pak until your batting collapsed but this right here will send strong message to the world ....go go go....

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 15:11 GMT)

you have to give full credits to Afghanistan. they showed great fighting spirit when they played against Pakistan and today against Bangladesh... Where I see it Afghanistan is developing their cricket very rapidly and it wont be long before they are a serious threat to any cricketing nation. compared with Bangladesh their progress is very rapid.. n for today's game i would say Lions have roared to quite down the tigers...

Posted by Oracle_Magus on (March 1, 2014, 15:02 GMT)

BCB will now realise the cost of banning Shaqib. He is a game changer and his absence has costed them 2 defeats in a row. Now the tigers are out of the tournament at their own home turf. Well done Afghanistan. They have already announced their arrival in the ODI circuit with 2 great performance. They are growing in confidence with every match. India and Sri Lanka should nor take them lightly as they have sufficient fire power in both batting and bowling department.

Posted by indirockz on (March 1, 2014, 15:01 GMT)

I've been keep telling......strip BD from the test status and give it to someone deserving like AFG and IRE. These BD are only tigers as per their fans. No other team in the world takes them seriously....What excuses you have BD fans now for this humiliating defeat (on your own dust yard) from a team which is not even given a test status???

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 14:56 GMT)

@mdarifurrahmandany You cant make excuses, of absence of certain players, after all none of the teams playing for asia cup is at their full strength. SL is missing Kula,Rangana, and Dilshan. India is missing Dhoni, Pak is missing Mohamad Irfan. And by the way this is Afganistan (BD fans call them minnows). So getting a rough decision from umpire shouldn't make a difference. (As BD fans say getting a rough decision from umpire effects more on BD than some of the bigger teams when they play against each other, but now things are in reverse order as BD is the so called "superior" team against afganistan)

Posted by   on (March 1, 2014, 14:55 GMT)

Well playing Afghanistan. Go for win. BD should learn to win by now in all these years.....

Posted by _IndiaRocks on (March 1, 2014, 14:55 GMT)

Bangladesh heading towards shameful loss. Bangladesh fans please don't come up with lame excuses for this loss. Just accept fact that Afghanistan is better team than you.

Posted by manojkris on (March 1, 2014, 14:54 GMT)

All Bangladeshi fans, in case if you don't win this game please do not come up with the usual crap saying key players were missing, decisions went agaist you. Simply your players are not consistent. They have won very few matches since gaining full memeber status. Stop winging and learn to win matches. Injuries, bad decisions are part and parcel of the game. All other Cricket playing nations go through all these things, but the diiference is they learn quickly to get on with the game.Even Afghanistan is learning the so fast, and recently won games against Autralia, and Sri lanka in the on going under 19 world cup.

Posted by Damian123 on (March 1, 2014, 14:50 GMT)

What BD should do to improve their cricket are: 1) Play more with India so that India can improve their overseas record. 2) Arrange more matches with UAE, Nepal, Hong Kong/China, Bermuda, USA, etc.

Posted by android_user on (March 1, 2014, 14:36 GMT)

@WannaBeRusta bro thats why i said suspicious. well anamul was unlucky.that decision could have gone either.anyway, mushfik was the only player in this squad who has got some experience. just look at the other players. very inexperienced. but how unfortunate!that horrible decision actually went against the most and only experienced player.that is a big big blow.if bd lose this game and in post match talk they brag about missing their major player then i dont think that should be a mere excuse.bd really suffered for that.
