Series/Tournaments: Asia Cup

With Sri Lanka having qualified for the Asia Cup finals with their win against Afghanistan, there is only one place left for the other teams to vie for. Pakistan, with two wins under their belt and a game left, are the most likely team to face Sri Lanka in the finals on Saturday. A win for Pakistan against Bangladesh will put all doubts to rest. Pakistan will go through and the others will be out of the Asia Cup. But should they lose to Bangladesh in their next match, all the other teams will also be in with a chance - however remote - for a place in the finals. The following is what the teams need to do, and also what they need others to do for them, to find a place in the final.

Pakistan

For them the equation is simple yet: beat Bangladesh and get to the finals with three wins.

Pakistan can only be eliminated under the following scenarios, which on Bangladesh's current form look highly unlikely - (i) Bangladesh win both their remaining matches with bonus points and with ten points they go through to the final. (ii) Bangladesh win both their matches and get one bonus point against either of the teams. Then it will be a two-way tie on points with Pakistan, in which case Pakistan will be relegated.

The rules of the tournament stipulate that a tie on points between two or more teams will be decided, first on the head-to-head record in the tournament, and then, if required, on the bonus points earned and then, if required, on NRR. So Pakistan will not make it to the final if it is a two-way tie between them and Bangladesh, irrespective of their NRRs.

However, if India or Afghanistan also get a bonus point, then there will be a three-way tie between Pakistan, Bangladesh and India/Afghanistan, necessitating a qualification based on the highest NRR.

Bangladesh

They still have two matches left and like Pakistan, they can also qualify for the finals without depending on other results. For that though, they will have to win both their remaining games - against Pakistan and Sri Lanka - with bonus points.

In the event that they win both their games but manage only one bonus point, they will go to the finals directly if no team gets a bonus point in the India-Afghanistan game. But in case one of the two does manage a bonus point, there will be a three-way tie, which then will be decided on NRRs. In a three-way tie situation though, it will help both Bangladesh and India if Bangladesh earn their bonus point against Pakistan.

It will be an outright elimination for Bangladesh if they don't win against Pakistan or if they don't manage at least two wins and one bonus point.

India

The only chance of India qualifying is when there's a three-way tie with Pakistan and Bangladesh on points, head-to-head and bonus point. Bangladesh winning against Pakistan and losing against Sri Lanka will also not help them since it will be a two-way tie between India and Pakistan. India, having lost to Pakistan in the league match, will be relegated.

Afghanistan

Their qualifications scenarios mirror India's. They will have to beat India with a bonus point and hope for a three-way tie with Bangladesh and Pakistan. Their qualification is very unlikely though, given their NRR has taken a beating after heavy losses to Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Finally, here's a rough idea of how the margins of these results will affect the net run rates of the teams, for scores around 250. If Pakistan lose to Bangladesh by no more than a margin of 18 balls to spare or 16 runs, then their NRR will be higher than India's even if India were to beat Afghanistan by the minimum margin required to earn a bonus point. However, If India manage a bigger win, this will not be enough. If Bangladesh manage to beat Pakistan with a bonus point, Pakistan's NRR would be low enough to give Bangladesh and India a realistic chance of qualifying in case of a three-way tie.

i am very Thankful To Almighty Allah , without His Help nothing is possible ,,,,I tried my level best to perform well. Misbah has great support and it's my type of situation and I had the licence. I was confident that 10, 10.5 an over was possibly so I took a chance. I have to congratulate Bangladesh for the score they put up. We need to do better with the ball. With India out of the tourney, will they dare to test Ishwar Pandey and rest Shami? I doubt. And how about asking Rahane to open while Rohit down the order. I doubt. Oh Pujara can also open and drop Rohit. I doubt.

Whilst Afghanistan & BD are playing with lots of guts & determination, the reverse seems to be the case with India. Being the World ODI champions they need to have won the Asia Cup authoritatively. Instead they are contend with defeats justifying them in terms of close games. When India is ODI world champion, they need to play their best players both in batting & bowling. Unless they learn to do so, they will be out of WC 2015 in a Jiffy! There is no plan or intensity in preparation for WC 2015. The same old Losing Coach Fletcher & his lack lustre coaching team. Kirsten led India to the top of the World whilst Fletcher brought India to the bottom losing to every team + teaching players to be content with losses! The exit from the Asia Cup is a sad tale of missed chances via "Benching" its Best players. Absence of targeted plan of player development + Benching of its best players has hurt India so badly that they are at the BOTTOM. India cannot rise to the TOP with such Politiking!

It is better India get out of the tournament, instead of working on this thinny calculations to finals and get another beating from SL because of poor pace bowling !! India must start searching for fast bowlers looking into WC 2015.

It is very nice to see Indian fans appreciating Pakistan team. The Saturday match was the replay of famous match "Miandad Six on the last ball". I am honoured to watch that match live in 1986 and now in 2014. History repeats itself. Indians have big hearts to enjoy both matches.

I really can not re-call a 3+ team tournament in last 15-18 years (except the 2011 wc) where India has not come to depending on the calculations (other results and NRR)

Being an Indian fan...was distraught watching what transpired in last over on Sunday..but what temperament shown by Afridi finally playing innings his fans wanted from him for a long time..salute to Afridi for hitting those sixes because he knew if he would had mistimed one of them match could have been over.. even Sanga other day played really well...Kohli has led from the front .. Mishra should be a regular feature in Indian line up .. As Cricket fans we must appreciate opposition players too..hope the best two teams go to the final..what an advertisement for 50 over cricket...

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 9:27 GMT)

To my Indian Compatriots who are bringing up excuses like short boundaries, please learn to appreciate our opponents..Pak played better than us and hence won the match. Let's rejoice the fact that the indian bowlers showed tremendous resolve to defend the paltry target . Good Cricket. Best of luck to Pak for finals

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 9:17 GMT)

The Indian team does not look solid. We have lost match winners and have not been able to replace them, especially in the middle order. i think its time that Gauti, yuvi, uthappa and pathan are given a look. I guess we miss pathan and yuvi's part timers and hitting potential in the middle and gauti's solidity at the top of the order. I am not suggesting that we take all four on board...but i think Rohit, Kartik and Rayadu's are not match winners....

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 8:48 GMT)

India had produced number of gentleman cricketers like Sachine, Sunil, Rahul, Kapill, Azar, Ganguly etc to admire talent of the other team. Now that generation is over. During India- Pakistan match someone has shortened the boundary in the 49th over of Pakistan inning to allow Afridi to hit two sixes

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 8:24 GMT)

@kricet_fan .. If we're going down the route of "pure LUCK" then lets also talk about Jadeja and Ashwin's plumb dismissals not given. Had there been DRS, Pak would have been chasing a much lower total. I hope you DO realize that boundaries were short for Indians too, otherwise Rohit and Jadeja's sixes would have been caught in the deep.

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 8:21 GMT)

@kricet_fan bro it was a good cricket from both side, but if you say Pak was lucky to win then you have no spirit, let me explain 1- was boundry short only for afridi? didn't you see rohit tiny sixes? 2- india was lucky enough umpires didn't gave 3 plumb out, raydu off afridi, jadeja off hafiz, ashwin off gull, and a simple drop catch by hafiz, your team might get out under 180 , we didn't mentioned it,. come on accept the defeat and enjoy the best cricket which both nations has played. great bowling by amit , and good knock by raydu. be a cricket fan enough said.

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 8:16 GMT)

@kricet_fan so the boundaries were long when you were batting?

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 8:14 GMT)

I am from sri lanka.yes at this tournement sri lanka did well upto now. That does noes not mean we are superior to India or Pakistan.India is undergoing a temporary bad patch. They will rise up very fast and regain their position again.

Posted by Valavan on (March 4, 2014, 8:14 GMT)

@Kricet_fan: Afridi comes to party when it matters, Afridi is one of the biggest hitters in Cricket, leave alone his inconsistency. Afridi managed to mishit a six in short boundaries. Do you think the boundaries were bigger while india played and was shortened when afridi came to bat. Can Dhoni mishit a six or do Yuvraj. Yuvraj is already nearing his end of career, Yo were jumping in air when dhoni clears short boundaries, but complain when its done by afridi. That shows you where you come from. Buy more sour grapes and supply to other friends too. cricinfo please publish.

Posted by brian007 on (March 4, 2014, 7:58 GMT)

All Indian Fans, please accept the fact that there are no chance for your team to be in this year finals. So please, please stop making anymore scenarios. Perhaps what you could do is the facial expression what Virat has during the final Six from Afridi or just let it go and try to be more respectful in the gentleman's game.

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 7:42 GMT)

Whether there is a chance or not...India is still a very good cricketing nation...Though I am a Pakistani and love my team but as a cricket lover I like indian team too...I like Kohli's batting but apart from that he has attitude problems which he needs to fix...if he had his mind on game and rationality intact..he would have all the fielders protecting that last single of Junaid khan..He did not..Dhoni is the best captain in the world right now and all respect for him. we all love him here..and please we all need to understand that India-Pakistan match always generate heat...if there is no heat, we will loose interest. So relax everyone and enjoy cricket as we all love it and are crazy about it. :)

Posted by ever_green on (March 4, 2014, 7:40 GMT)

I think, If this match will have no result or tie, Pakistan will get 2 points and will to the final straightaway. Please correct me if i am wrong.

Posted by kricet_fan on (March 4, 2014, 7:40 GMT)

@Multan-Cowboy: Pakistan's win against India was a pure LUCK. Last 2 sixes were not of the middle of the bat and since the boundaries were too short it went for six.

We will show you how to defeat when Dhoni, Yuvi and Raina returns for T20 worldcup.

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 7:22 GMT)

Pakistan, India , Srilanka are the best teams of Asia. Bangladesh and Afghanistan are developing teams. I saw every match of this tournament. Sirilanka gave its best with Sangakara and Malinga, Pakistan showed itself with Afridi, Umer Akmal, Saeed Ajmal mainly. India just rely on Virat Kohli. So, keeping in view the individual potential, Pak is best-est, Srilanka is better and India is best. And Good Luck to Pak and Srianka :) I'm hoping the Asian Champion will not allow the Euorepians to win the ICC T20 world cup

Posted by Multan-Cowboy on (March 4, 2014, 7:16 GMT)

India supporting Pakistan in the final is the biggest Joke I heard because the reason for supporting us is not because they like pakistan, but because they hate Sri Lanka so much. Indian fans - Pakistan can do well without support and you need to think a way of winning an ODI against a good team as you only have a Bangladesh win to show in your last 11 matches. Haha

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 7:10 GMT)

@Dinesh Kanwa, In the last Asia Cup around, Pathan and Praveen Kumar give 27 of 8 Balls to lose from a winning position and you still have Sachin to blame. When will this stop? Thank god! You have, Kohli, now to target on. Rest 10, sitting ducks!

Posted by screamingeagle on (March 4, 2014, 6:51 GMT)

India did reasonably well, thats it. All the best for Pak to win, only because I do not like the way some SL fans comment here. Others seem much more rational.

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 6:23 GMT)

we do not deserve to be in final. Last time we were a better team and if not for that 100th 100, we could have been playing final. But not this time. SL, though riding on Sanga, but still best team of the lot, and Pak, with better batting, bowling always superior are a better side than us and deserve to play in finals. And about Ind-Pak match, it is not Afridi who won it, it was magician Ajmal who did it. If not for that freak 49th over of Indian inning combined with his overall figures India still would have scored close to 265-270. I am just talking about individual credit here not overall team performance which Pak had better also taking the fact that lot of ump decisions went against them. Good luck Pak

Posted by spinkingKK on (March 4, 2014, 6:13 GMT)

@ShaffKhan, good to read a very sensible comment from a Pakisthani about the Indian team. You are a true cricket lover. Your team deserved a victory in that match. Afridi, in my opinon, is the best ever hitter in the history of cricket. The guy can hit any bowler out of the park. India made a mistake in not creating pressure to the number 11 batsman. Kohli captained very well until then. But, his inexperience and youthful naivety took over for that 2nd ball of the 50th over. At least, Ashwin should have thought about it then. Anyway, all the best to Pakisthan.

Posted by Yousufahmed1 on (March 4, 2014, 5:43 GMT)

@ Parackrama Maduwantha Liyanage I think you don't remember but your team was at the last position in the last ASIA cup even after playing your full stregnth team. India doesn't have their main ODI player. Remove Sanga's contribution from SL and see where they would have been. Its actually you who has a superiority syndrome. Most of the Indian fans have been saying that our team is weak and SL and PAK are better in this tournament. All the teams go through difficult times. Your team has not won a single test series outside SL since 2000 and still your comment has so much arrogance. This is not the end of the world, even after playing depleted Indian team SL barely won and also got help from dropped chances. On the other hand my best wishes to SL and PAK team, I hope the best team win.

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 5:42 GMT)

Although BD have ability to do so in home conditions, but winning 2 matches that too with 1 bonus point in current form is highly impossible.. Any way, lets look one game a head.. BD should try to win this game with bonus point, beat SL with bonus point is very difficult..

With such a short series tie breaking by head to head tie is not acceptable. I suggest go for NRR, which shows the quality of win or the best solution is play 2 rounds of league matches, which will correctly decide best 2.

Any way hoping for BD win as IND fan...

Posted by ShaffKhan on (March 4, 2014, 5:29 GMT)

Im a pakistani... From my point of view... INDIA played well in this tourmnt. They balled well against pakistan. Pak bat poorly but balled nice to restrict india to a low target. VK has to learn more but he has to look for his attitude. That is the big problem for him. A Captain has a lot of pressure on his shoulder, why he can show that kind of attitude. DK was good. Every keeper do mistake but that miss stump was not the turning point. He is a good player he must be given chances. Also a request for indian fan if your team loose dont criticize, back up your team. Even dhoni is being criticized. You will not find that man in future. Cool Calm Good Keeper Good Batsman ...

Posted by bouncer709 on (March 4, 2014, 5:28 GMT)

Pakistan will beat Bangladesh, Afghanistan will beat India (I am waiting for this last hole in Indian titanic, be ready India), Srilanka will beat Bangladesh.... So Final Pak VS Srilanka.... and Pakistan have very bad habit too... They always beat the unbeaten, ... So Pak=Asian Champion.

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 5:25 GMT)

it is surely going to be sri lanka vs pakistan

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 5:08 GMT)

Sri Lanka does not mind who will come to the final. Sri Lankan fans would like to see either Pakistan, BD or Afg in the final. Then the better team will win. If India selected their superiority syndrome will come to play with others. They should understand the cricket is a sport and a good team will win in given day. India never dominated the world like WI did in 70s and 80s and Australia in 2000-2010 if so we can't imagine where they are? They have now continually beaten by major teams for more than good 10 games but still this superioty syndrome is prevailing

Posted by ramz_01 on (March 4, 2014, 4:18 GMT)

how funny is dis , wen SL VS BAN series goin ban, ind, pak fans said SL gona trash in asia cup hands of ind, pak now sri lanka comfertably thr wit othrz fighting for place in final. proud of u lions.

We did better without dhoni & other guys. And i think young indian player are learning through it. Even VK has done his part well. It will be easy for BCCI to select players for upcoming world cup. Best wishes to SL for asia cup final.

Posted by CricActually on (March 4, 2014, 3:33 GMT)

These calculations in a way is an effort to keep Indian fans hopes alive in tournament, so that the revenue does not get a big blow. but i guess it will be all over today and people can put their calculators to rest. It important to realize that BD can not win against Pakistan in current form of both teams. full stop..and i know about cricket is a game of uncertainties, blah, blah.

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 3:25 GMT)

Ok guys, shakib is here. He got us bonus points against SL in a triangular series in which there was ZIM too. hope shakib does one more of these. but before SL BD has to beat PAK tomorrow or today for BD time

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 3:23 GMT)

tomorrow BD has supports from 1.4 billion Indians, 155 millions Bangadeshis, and all Afgans and Srilankans since AFG are planning to to make another upsets and SL wants to have an easier opponents and IND always wants PAK to lose against BD plus if BD wins then they might have a chance.

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 3:06 GMT)

It is going to be SL vs Pak. No need to consider any other scenario.

Posted by Practical_person on (March 4, 2014, 2:36 GMT)

As a neutral observer, I feel Srilanka and Pakistan were 1st and 2nd best teams respectively in this tournament and deserve to be in the finals. India was a close third. I don't expect BD to create any upsets considering their present form.

Final will be a new game and Pakistan is full of surprises. You never who will win.

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 2:26 GMT)

@Sharif Ahmed: which game were you watching, Pakistan was never 97/7 vs Afghanistan, they were 117/6 and then scored 248/8.

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 1:43 GMT)

Very Good Analysis shiva .

Posted by   on (March 4, 2014, 1:30 GMT)

Bangladesh has the ability, but the lower order of Bangladesh must comeback if they are to win this game. They are doing nothing for the team, special Nasir, Mahmudullah and Razzak. How can you expect to win if you do not have number 6, 7 and 8 batsman? Only five batsman is not really enough for a team like Bangladesh as Tamim is not there as well.

Posted by JoyBangladesh71 on (March 4, 2014, 1:07 GMT)

Please....Bangladesh and Pakistan are not brothers and never will be!!

Posted by SaraJahanSeAchha on (March 4, 2014, 1:03 GMT)

Sri Lanka is the team in these conditions and may win finals. With regard to India, they have the talent but what's the use if they don't pick right team. Ash win is utter waste. misheard is an attacking bowler and should have been used in NZ. Shami should have been rested with opportunity given to Umesh or pandey. This is where Aus excels in taking good care of resources. Learning curve for Virat, ash in has no variation, should have used mishra for last over.

Posted by Omarrz on (March 4, 2014, 0:08 GMT)

@Shoaib Akhtar - didn't you read it? NRR comes 3rd in deciding the teams' standing. If Pak loose and India win by huge margin, thus getting a bonus point, then both Pak and India will tie at 9 points. In that case Pak will prevail since in head-to-head encounter Pak was the winner. Only thing is if Pak loose without conceeding a bonus point, then they should hope that Bangla should not win with a bonus point. A win will not be enough for Bangladesh. They have to have atleast 1 bonus point with 2 wins.

Posted by   on (March 3, 2014, 22:33 GMT)

it means Pakistan going to hurt India again tomorrow IN SHA ALLAH. Indian fans stop dreaming BD to win one thing but winning with bonus point especially against Pak. SL. dream on

Posted by kc69 on (March 3, 2014, 22:13 GMT)

Why all the calculations to raise hopes?, it is decided Pak vs SL final and half of the stadium will be empty as home team is not playing.Similar thing will happen inT20WC.

Posted by   on (March 3, 2014, 21:18 GMT)

Do remember that SL were 67-8 vs Bangladesh and could have been all out under 80 if Bangladesh didnt drop Senanyake and Perera so any anything is possible

Posted by Stieprox on (March 3, 2014, 20:16 GMT)

@Dannymania if pakistan play in final i am bangladesh will support pakistan.bangladeshis and pakistanis are brothers.

Posted by   on (March 3, 2014, 20:08 GMT)

Heres another senario, If BD can manage to beat Pak with a bonus point SL will select BD as the opponent for the finals by giving the match to BD with a bonus point. This would make SL to have a easy final.

Posted by   on (March 3, 2014, 20:01 GMT)

I'm getting a smile picturing the scenario that, SHEHWAG is cheering while BD gets a wicket or hits a boundery against PAK. Literally BD will get their highest number of supporters against PAK tomorrow including INDIA...hope this could get them the first win of this century against PAK. And as PAK has jsut won a great match against IND . . I could sense they are going to lose several matches ahead!!

Posted by   on (March 3, 2014, 19:50 GMT)

If Pakistan lose against Bangladesh, and India beat Afghanistan with mass difference, then India will have the chance to get into the final regarding net run rate. So, be careful about the match tomorrow. We must win. Be patient while in batting. Don't throw your wickets.

Posted by alleefahad on (March 3, 2014, 19:33 GMT)

don't make mockery of calculations...!!! Pakistan has never lost against bangladesh since 1999 world cup!!!

Posted by   on (March 3, 2014, 18:57 GMT)

To Danny,Pakistan was 97/7 at a stage against Afghanistan.if pakistan was all out before 150.afghanistan is a great team.Think about the last Asia cup.you are so crazy i think. But bad time comes to a team.

Posted by siqbal00 on (March 3, 2014, 18:54 GMT)

@Dannymania ... Bangladesh has 2 teams in Asia cup, one Bengali tigers and the other Pakistan greens. So what if one team is not doing well, their 2nd team Pakistan will always be there to cheer them up. I appreciate all the support Team Green has received in Bangladesh. Keep it up guys, Afridi is as much pride of Bangladesh as much for Pakistani fans. Go greens!!!

Posted by   on (March 3, 2014, 18:51 GMT)

India will beat afganistan and pakistan will beat bangladesh and there will be pak vs lanka final. no doubt about it. no more calculations... plz.

Posted by Adnan-Ahmed on (March 3, 2014, 18:43 GMT)

Knowing Pakistan, they will definitely give Bangladesh a lot of chances to turn the game...but even if Pakistan loses, I dont think it will be by a bonus point...what I'm trying to say is...bye bye India :)

Posted by jerryman on (March 3, 2014, 18:36 GMT)

Likely scenario is that Pakistan will in the finals barring the rather bizarre possibilities. BD beating both Pakistan and SL and also winning with a bonus point rather unlikely. However it is cricket and the glorious uncertainties always prevail . It a'int over till the fat lady sings , but apparently the fat lady is clearing her throat , barring laryngitis the 2 best teams in this tournament will go through. India should be blamed for team selection , Mishra should have played in the other games too . Their middle order was a bit too brittle and lacked the stability and finishing touches that Dhoni provided .. For bowling I would rate Pakistan , SL and Afghanistan as the better attacks . was impressed with the Afghans , if they bat and field better on these sub continent wickets can be a handful .. BD was a bit of a disappointment , considering they were on their home grounds , however they always were behind without Shakib and Tamim . However Shakib coming back may give momentum

Posted by Masking_Tape on (March 3, 2014, 18:29 GMT)

So if Bangladesh were to make the finals, it will all depend on Sri Lanka and their last game against Bangladesh. If it comes to that if I were Sri Lanka, I'd lose the last game to Bangladesh, allowing them into the final for an easier final. Sri Lanka can literally choose their opponent for the final.

Posted by   on (March 3, 2014, 18:23 GMT)

@ashik imran... please wake up from dream

Posted by   on (March 3, 2014, 18:22 GMT)

So Pakistan will have to win tomorrow then....They will and everyone else out right.....hmmm

Posted by   on (March 3, 2014, 18:10 GMT)

Bangladesh will beat Pakistan and then beat Srilanka with a bonus point and will go into the finals, and then will be the Asian Champions.... :)

Posted by Dannymania on (March 3, 2014, 18:08 GMT)

As a Pakistani cricket fan, i expect them to lose EVERY match as they can! BUT, the thing is, that even Afghanistan won against Bangladesh! Thats how bad The bangladeshi team is, at playing the game thats called CRICKET.They should be wiped off of their test status as it is a disgrace to the game of cricket if teams like bangladesh have this status. One less test team, thats it.No more additions. If a team keeps playing really well, give them a provisional 20-match run in the tests, playing against all the teams. Then see the results and add them or remove them.Bangladeshis did not ever, deserve the test status they got.I just feel so bad for the bangladeshi spectators who always come to the grounds in huge numbers to see if their team can pull off a miracle and win at home atleast! MY GOD! They even lost to Afghanistan playing at home!what?!Oh come on!
