Big Picture

After his team had narrowly beaten India, Angelo Mathews said Sri Lanka "do those little things right". In a tournament full of rash shots and missed opportunities on the field, Sri Lanka have committed fewer basic errors than all the other sides. It goes quite a way towards explaining their unbeaten record in the tournament so far.

Pakistan, on the other hand, threw away a winning position against Sri Lanka. They were 117 for 6 against Afghanistan thanks to the shot selection of their top order. Misbah-ul-Haq has twice been run out in comical fashion. Against Bangladesh, Abdur Rehman was barred from bowling when he had figures of 0-0-8-0. And yet, despite all that, Pakistan may well start the final as favourites.

After meeting each other in the opening game of the tournament, the two sides have taken divergent paths to the final. Sri Lanka, to put it a touch simplistically, have gone quietly about their business. Pakistan, on the other hand, have built up the sort of momentum that comes with winning thrilling matches. When you beat India by one wicket and chase 327 in your next game, you tend to believe you can win from any position.

Pakistan's batsmen, after an uncertain start to the tournament, have also found form. There's Shahid Afridi, of course, but there's also Mohammad Hafeez, who has scored half-centuries in his last two games, Ahmed Shehzad, who made a century against Bangladesh, and Fawad Alam, whose return to the side suddenly gave Pakistan someone who could hold their middle order together. It's almost a good thing for Pakistan, perversely, that Misbah, the man who usually does that job for them, has scored 0, 1 and 4 in the matches they have won.

Pakistan, though, have two major concerns going into the final. One is the form of their fast bowlers. Junaid Khan, Umar Gul and Mohammad Talha - their likely first-choice combination - have all been expensive, giving away close to or over run-a-ball. The second is the fitness of four of their players. Shehzad, Sharjeel Khan, Afridi and Gul have niggles of various kinds.

Of the four, Afridi, who picked up a hip injury in the game against Bangladesh, looked most in doubt, and showed signs of discomfort during Pakistan's training session on Friday. But their manager, Zakir Khan, said he was responding well to the physio's ministrations, and it seemed as if Pakistan wouldn't leave him out unless it became absolutely unavoidable.

Sri Lanka, for their part, haven't completely convinced as a batting unit. Kumar Sangakkara, Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne have scored runs, but the rest of the top six have been patchy. Kusal Perera has tended to throw away starts, while Dinesh Chandimal and Mahela Jayawardene have looked out of form. Sri Lanka bat deep, though, and match-turning contributions in a final are as likely to come from a Chaturanga de Silva or a Thisara Perera as they are to come from a top-order batsman.

The pitches in Mirpur have been a little unpredictable, with one side of the square tending to produce uneven bounce and another throwing up good batting conditions. Spinners have played a massive role regardless of which pitch is used, though, and the most important mini-contest in the match could be the one between the two slow-bowling attacks.

In Ajantha Mendis, de Silva and Sachithra Senanayake, Sri Lanka have one potential match-winner and two capable ODI bowlers. Pakistan's spin attack, with Saeed Ajmal, Hafeez and Afridi seems to hold a slight edge, especially in terms of the experience they have bowling as a unit.

Watch out for

Lahiru Thirimanne struck an accomplished century against Pakistan in the opening game of the tournament, and has continued to look good at the crease without making any other big scores. Batting up the order seems to suit his game, and a good innings in the final could win him a longer run as an opener even after Tillakaratne Dilshan returns to the side.

Mohammad Hafeez scored three centuries against Sri Lanka during the recent ODI series in the UAE, and has shown glimpses of that form in the Asia Cup. His bowling has been crucial as well, and he's done a useful job with the new ball. He'll probably do that in the final too, considering the number of left-hand batsmen in Sri Lanka's top order.

Team news

Ashan Priyanjan took two wickets with his offspin against Bangladesh and timed the ball sweetly during his brief stay in the middle. But he was in the side only because Sri Lanka had already qualified for the final, and he will most likely make way for Chandimal. Lasith Malinga should also regain his place, but it's hard to predict who they'll leave out in his place.

Sri Lanka (likely): 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Lahiru Thirimanne, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Angelo Mathews (capt), 7 Chaturanga de Silva, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Sachithra Senanayake/Suranga Lakmal, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Ajantha Mendis

Pakistan have a few fitness worries, with Afridi (hip), Shehzad (shoulder), Sharjeel (knee) and Gul (general soreness) at less than 100 per cent. None of the injuries are particularly serious, though, judging by the comments of their manager on the eve of the match, so they should be able to field their first-choice XI.

Pakistan (likely): 1 Ahmed Shehzad, 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 4 Sohaib Maqsood, 5 Fawad Alam, 6 Umar Akmal (wk), 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Umar Gul, 9 Saeed Ajmal, 10 Mohammad Talha, 11 Junaid Khan

Stats and trivia

  • Pakistan and Sri Lanka have met each other 12 times in tournament finals, and each side has won six times
  • Among batsmen who haven't scored an ODI century, Misbah-ul-Haq has the most career runs. On Saturday, he will go out for the toss alongside Angelo Mathews, who is ninth on that list.

    Quotes

"I don't know, honestly. One day it looks like 200 is difficult, the next day on the same pitch you chase down 300-plus."
Misbah-ul-Haq on the vagaries of the Mirpur pitch

All the fans seems to forget one point here... Well done SL and Thiri Slinga all that... But the true hero who gave the game on a sliver platter to SL is non other than Misbah. No one seems to thank him for his contribution of the match which made it possible for SL to win. IF he walked when he nicked it, then it would have been Akmals chance to go against SL bowlers. Like we all saw, it wasn't a mine field of a pitch to bat on. Just that Misbah couldn't score fast! If Afridi got 25 to 35 balls to bat SL would have been chasing something like 325 +. So SL fans, pls show your gratitude to the true MOM...

I am highly convinced that this so called SLSlider is not a sri lankan or a sri lankan fan but pretending to be a sri lankan fan and criticising them, if this is published and if that person see this one advice support your own team and criticise the others with your true identity

Lanka is Pakistanis favorite team, of course after their own team, this is coz of their super-sweet treatment during match and even after match, beside this Lankan has earned this game strength in a long struggling journey. Best of Luck Lanka for a good match, but being Pakistani, Insha Allah Pakistan will win, and being a crazy fan, Insha Allah it will be another thrilling, twisting, turning, nail-biting, screaming, jumping match. Cheers Don

Sri Lanka has best chance to win this match. sanga has the highest score in Asian cup and the mendis has the most wicket after the murali..So Sri Lanka gets the more benefits and other players are also in great form except mahela and the chandi. So this time Sri Lanka will win the match easily..

the scales have tilted in Pak's favour with toss's outcome, though they still have to bat well.Mendis should have played, but let 's see how this goes. The most important question though is with best afternoon, clear and sunny ,of the tournament, will the dew make an appearance in the night and if it does any target is achievable .

Posted by wapuser on (March 8, 2014, 7:56 GMT)

congrats to both sl and pak for coming top by narrow margin against a 2 string indian side without dhoni ,yuvraj ,Raina, pujara

Afridi should come on no.4 because we are batting first today... If he came on no.4 then he will have a chance to score a 100 because he is in form..

I am a SL fan so obviously logic doesn't apply to me like my fellow countrymen. We won last match against India so we are superior even though we have lost 11 out of last 16 matches against India. Still we are better. How are we better, well I don't know and don't have any valid argument but we are better. We are better than India overseas even though we haven't won a single test series outside SL since 2000 but we are better. A very intelligent, reasonable and proud SL fan.

Posted by SLslider on (March 8, 2014, 7:50 GMT)

@ ThilankaK If we win today then we will say Lions are the best, Asian champs, bigger victory than overrated WC or CT but if we lose today then who cares about Asia cup. Nobody does.

    Posted by Rajesh.Kumar on (March 8, 2014, 7:49 GMT)

For Indians there is little to chose here. If, somehow, both teams could lose, that would have been a fair result. But one of these two teams will lose at the end of the day, and that is good enough for me....

i think it will be an exciting game both are asian gaints but the history goes against srilanka as they are alwax losers in the big games esp finals and after all records too matter but let see one who plays the best will be the asian champion hope afridi will once again rock today i support both the countries and the one who plays well will win com on tigers and go green

Posted by wapuser on (March 8, 2014, 7:49 GMT)

good contest ahead malinga vs afridi and sanga vs ajmal

Posted by SLslider on (March 8, 2014, 7:48 GMT)

@ ThilankaK Teams like India don't stand a chance against Lions.

We have thrashed India 4 times in last 16 matches. Yes they have won 11 out of 16 matches in recent years. But in those 11 matches we were not in a mood to play. We just let India win in those matches but when we wanted to win in important matches we won. That's the power of Lions. We didn't care about the WC final coz we didn't want to win so does CT semi final, we don't care about those matches.

    Posted by Rajesh.Kumar on (March 8, 2014, 7:48 GMT)

What an Asia cup final, but, I must say that it is an improvement over last time, when it was a battle of minnows between Pak and Bangla. This time around these two teams are there more because of flukes than anything else. Both teams defeated BD and Afg with great difficulty, and for defeating India they had to wait till the last over, and had lost 8-9 wickets. And if it weren't for that slog from Afridi going for six, India would have won that game. So finally one of these two teams will become Asian champ, which will be a fine tribute to mediocrity.

Definition of a Legend in our country. Anyone who can stand on the field for 50 overs and has an average of around 30 is a Legend. LEGEND OF THE GAME.

Our fan Logic - If we win against BANG(by wrong decisions and dirty tactics of course) its a great performance. We are the best. If India wins against BANG then they have won against a low ranked side, not a big deal. And then they say that they respect cricket and fans. But we are not hypocrites.

Same thing happened during PAK series. Before the series they were like "we don't mind losing and blah blah" but during last day of last test we all saw what happened on that infamous day. Our cricketers crying so they could go off the feild. LOL.

Posted by SLslider on (March 8, 2014, 7:41 GMT)

@ ThilankaK Yes Sanga is the world famous cricketer in Sri Lanka. So what if he never gets mentioned by former legends of different teams, so what they only argue between Lara, Sachin and ponting. It doesn't matter, sanga has 19 centuries after playing only 362 matches and has a great average of 40 but some kohli guy has only 19 centuries after playing a whopping 131 matches and has an ordinary average of 52. We don't care. we have never had a cricketer who averages over 41 in ODIs ever. coz we don't care. Sanga is the God of cricket. Since his debut SL has not won a single test series outside SL. Real God of cricket. Even Mahela is Lord of Lords, his average after 400 odis is breathtaking 33.33 and 16 centuries. Similar to Sir Jadeja's batting average. What a playa.

Both Teams Thrashed India out! Should be a good, intense game of cricket. Lets see who Rulez Asia.

Posted by SLslider on (March 8, 2014, 7:41 GMT)

@ ThilankaK SL are no. 1 in the world. I have lost count of how many tournaments we have won in last 10 years or so. We have won countless test matches in AUS and Ind. We have won every test series outside SL since 2000. We have won natwest trophy, CB series, WC, CT, BBL, CBL, FIFA WC, Wimbledon, Australian open. Our cricket team is the best for sure.

Pak Team looks good. Fawad Alam was phenomenal last match and has showed the kind of application and solidity Pak need in tests and ODIs. He deserves a place for at least the whole of 2014. Good luck to both teams but Inshallah Pak will realise their potential...

    My team for today,s match:

    1-shahzad 2-Sharjeel Khan 3- Hafeez 4-misbah ul haq 5- fawad alam 6-Umar Akmal 7-Afridi -8- Bhatt/Anwar Alii 9-Gul/Talha 10-Junaid khan 11- Saeed Ajmal

If we play with this team pak will be winner of 2014 Asia Cup Inshallah.

How I wish it would have been a Pakistan-India final. Not that Sri Lanka are less deserving...in fact they are the most rightful finalists if one goes by their performance in this event. But most of the fireworks may be missing and cricket is expected to be more subtle, quite and technically sound.May the best team win

    Posted by Ahamed50 on (March 8, 2014, 7:02 GMT)

Hey best of luck for both Teams, If Sri Lanka can take Hafeez and Afridi very early and quick, then the real pressure is off from Sri Lanka. Lions roar it up

Posted by   on (March 8, 2014, 7:00 GMT)

Thirimanne, Sangakara,Mathews These 3 have the ability to hold the innings together at opening middle and lower order respectively...other 8 will play around them Shehzad, Misbah Akmal have the same role but misbah has to click today. Junaid khan and Umar gul both should play with Gul bowling all 10 before 42nd over as he is worst these days in death overs Junaid can bowl 5 overs in death 10, 1 in PP 2 with new ball and 2 in the middle with 3 spinners rolling around them and Anwar Ali with the supporting bowler roll as he is very sensible with the bat down the order for 20,25 runs Hafeez, Shehzad, Fawad, Sohaib, Misbah,Umar, Afridi, Anwar, Gul, Ajmal, Junaid This should be the final 11 for Pak

Fahad from Pakistan. My best wishes with the Sri Lankans as well as there are our friends

Hope SL re-consider Chandimal's position after the Asia Cup. There many talented young players who can contribute to the team not only by bat but by ball also. Such a waste because he is in team as a specialised batsman though he is continuing his out of form. Mahela must open with Thirimanne and Kusal can strength the middle order. Good luck guys hope to see a good game and don't want to lose another final after so much of hard work had been done.

It's really balanced final today, It will be a not an easy for both of team to get a win. I love Pakistan & we all know we are best friends. I think we have a good advantage of winning this because we are undefeated and with the support of Mendis & Malinga with the ball should surely be a problem to Pakistan while Sanga, Angelo is in a fine form as well in the batting.

It's really a true that Mahela should start batting with Kushal and Thirimanna move down the order Mahela vs Thirimanna ----> Mahela is more aggressive in open the innings so I think it's really great to start with Mahela & Kushal as we all know Thirimmanna can ban in anywhere in the batting line up.

I wish both teams good luck and we are waiting to see a trilling final today! go lions we love you... :)

Unbeaten lions will carry asia cup this time... no matter score runs mahela should need to be in team as a back bone so mahela did wonders for SLC and we guys have no right to ask more from him... mark my words.. mahela will rise again in final battle... for sure... good luck both teams but my money is with SRILANKA...

@ Suresh Kottegoda SL fans like you and me are really in need of a life. India is out coz we and PAK played better cricket. Leave them alone. They defeated us and PAK both in CT and won the trophy as well. Funny to read comments from my fellow SL fans. That "we don't care who win from here and PAK and SL are brothers". Maybe this is the reason we haven't won anything big in recent years. This is what we were doing before the final test against PAK and we all know how it ended. You yourself give India too much importance. Some PAK fans are also saying that we have already won the cup coz we beat India. Pathetic thinking I have to say. Maybe that's the reson its India who has more trophies than both SL and PAK included coz they don't enter a tournament thinking that they only have to beat PAK or SL, they enter to win a tournament. Think about it.

Happy to C Sri Lanka Wins but wishes PAK to give a good fight ( From Sri Lankan ). Momentum with PAK but steady ship like SL hold the nerve to not pressing panic button. If Lose SL should feel sad rather than PAK because how they play recently. Wonder any Indian fan here ...

INSHA ALLAH Pakistani will win this match by great margin, today is the day of All Pakistani Lions, if Pakistan restrict Sri Link in 200 surely we will win this match, it depends upon the pitch behavior at MIRPUR, those who expecting from Afridi, remember Fawad who made a ground in previous Match against Bangladesh, as per my little knowledge if today Pakistan give chance to Sharjeel (I don't have updated news about him whether he is t fit or not). Pakistani played well throughout the tournament, big won was against cricket Choudhry.

for a v long time the Pakistani team has been winning mainly cos of misbahs performance with the bat .. in this tournament however the whole team has performed and misbahs failure with the bat has proven to be a blessing in disguise .. Pakistan team has found the right balance and with the newly found confidence and belief, they are are sureto win this asia cup plus wc 2015 too in misbahs captaincy

it will b a great game I m pakistani fan but I love our best friend SL too so best of luck for both the team.

    Posted by Cobra0077 on (March 8, 2014, 5:24 GMT)

The only reason that SL may win is because of them having the only side arm baseball pitcher playing for them. Other than that it will be up to the Pak if they can restrict SL batting and hope for Afridi to pull another miracle from his hat. But, does all of this account the crooked Srini's team to lose any placement on the international level?

All the very best to paksitan. They deserves this title. Srilanka much depends on Sangakkara. Paksitan has a nice combination and they are grooming as a good unit under Misbah's captaincy. All the best pakistan and you deserves it.

I think India can win win this cup. Oh wait, we are not in the final... Well, being just behind the top 2 is not a bad thing. Ah, my bad, we are not even 3rd best team in this Asia cup, that would be Afgans. Sorry, being an Indian fan is quite frustrating since that world cup win in Mumbai 2011. Best of luck to both teams. I guess chances are Pak will win, bowling they always had world class and since start of the tournament I am saying this time they had slightly better batting than what they used to have earlier. SL can have their day but it will be on basis of their legends Sanga or Jaya. But though many of young brigade has started to show a bit of promise, but they will struggle if both of Sanga/Jaya fail. In this asia cup, though we failed miserably but we had 2 cracker of the matches with Pak/SL. And I know all will love if final is on the same line. Good luck, play hard play fair

Here's hoping for a nail-biter finale for the tournament. I don't mind who wins as long as it goes to the final ball of the match.

I don't feeling intensity as much beca SL seems friendly opposition. But still hope that Pakistan will win. Pakistan is unpredictable so their matches or decided on a day , they come out to play. As Nasir Hussain says first couple of hour will decide , is it a dangerous Pakistan or rusty one. I would say momentum is bit with Pakistan.

With Pakistan we certainly cannot be sure with what kind of game they will come up, either they will rolled over SL, or Pakistan themselves get rolled over, we can't predict what gonna happen, Their body language will tell nicely at the start of the game, I still feel Abdur Rehman should get another chance, he is a good bowler, really pity what happened to him against Bangladesh, but he's class act, and will be injustice to him if he gets dropped, in such conditions we surely need him, I know he will not allow SL to score freely.

Yes final, both sides played brilliant cricket but our guys were more consistant and more efficient.I think key is how handling pressure, it is really important our experienced sanga, mahela, mathews & malinga will guide young lahiru, kusal, chathuranga & thisara.I can't understand the logic of including totally outformed chandimal instead of allrounder ashan, plz don't do that.We should more concern about haffeez & misbah,I don't think afridi's magic will work this time.Anyway don't bother to find out favourites, we will win the cup,GO LIONS........................-:)

I am worried about Sankakkara . He looks so tired after a successful series . He should have opted out the Bangladesh match and asked Chandimal to keep. Most probably he will fail again tomorrow . Hopefully Mahela play well tomorrow . Pakistani chances rely heavily on Professor and Afridi. Ajmal had an off day against Bangladesh . Beware of him

Although Lakmal took 2 wickets in the first match, the Pakistan batsmen took to him - 9 overs 2/65 economy rate 7.22 - so expect Senanayake to get the nod. SL is the form team of the Asia Cup, now is an opportunity for someone who hasn't contributed so far, to seize the moment and bring home the trophy.

The writer says "When you beat India by one wicket and chase 327 in your next game, you tend to believe you can win from any position". How pathetic and biased is that? Let it be the chase of 327, but what's with the beating India by 1 wicket, make them believe they can win from any position. These are words from a Indian fan, who dreams that they are the unbeatable team and that any team will believe they can beat anyone if they beat India. I would like to see more balanced articles than this in Cricinfo. And I have no guarantee that Cricinfo will publish this.

Consecutively wining or being a runner-up is a default for Sri Lankans. No one prove such stability during past decade. Loose or not, we knows where we are in cricket… stability is differ than the luck or rare win. Well done SL andthey will bring the Trophy

Any grade i student of the cricket world , if followed the tournament so far, could understand the vast gap between SL and Pak at the moment. If the cliche, "great uncertainties of Cricket" is the decider today, It is Sri Lanka, fromthe word go.

Looking at the comments, it seems fans are calm and relax and no harsh comments at other team. While they are hoping for a close battle, they would not mind if their team is lost too, because the match is between friendly rivals. Although I am a Sri Lankan fan, knowledge of India is not winning the title is enough for me that I would not be much sad even Pakistan won it. All the best for the both teams.

    Posted by Oracle_Magus on (March 8, 2014, 0:56 GMT)

THIS IS THE CLASH OF THE TITANS. Nothing except the inconsistency of the Pak batting, could separate the two in their last battle. But with Afridi high on confidence and the Pak batsmen firing in their last match we can be assured that they won't repeat the mistakes. Lankans too have clinched a hard fought victory from a tough situation which must have done a lot of good to their confidence. We can be assured of a tough combat today and may the best team win.

Well this is gonna be one of the interesting final because these two sides are not meeting for the first time but they had some arrivals before and are unpredictable sides. Being a pakistani i will definitely support pakistan but best of luck to sanga and their team mates. But one thing is sure, without afridi, sharjeel, gul and shehzad they can't win because these guys are in tarafic form and they love to continue, specially afridi pakistan's main gun. But still i can say pakistan is favourite being as unpredictable side and have best bowling attack, i am in china and will fully support my team, best of luck grean shirts! and tigers you also! we will expect a great battle of cricket between these two..

I'm a bit worried as team should not depend on a grid. . guy no where close being the actual best death bowler.. fingers crossed.. no matter who wins but please don't make it a one sided a fair.

Posted by wapuser on (March 7, 2014, 22:56 GMT)

Its very important for SL attack to take early wickets. In that sense, it may be viable for Lakmal to play. With his out swing, he has the best chance of taking a couple of early wickets, just the role Kulasekara usually performs for SL. Also he managed to bowl 10-12 consecutive yorkers at the death against Bangladesh.

Hoping for a great final. Pakistan have peaked at the right moment. The middle order is playing with confidence. Shehzad , Alam , Umer Akmal and the irrepressible Afridi are in ominous touch. The spinners are always a handful for the opposition. If the pace battery fires , SL will be at a loss. I would hope the key elements1. Captaincy 2. Running between the wickets 3. Fielding and catching 4. Avoiding no balls are re-emphasized . If Pakistan can master these elements they will be victorious, inshallah! Zaman

Posted by Saadcricketlover on (March 7, 2014, 22:14 GMT)

Good luck Pakistan, inshallah we will win. I hope our players are all in good form and perform. It will be a great competition unless Pakistan folds or messes up their bowling. Pakistan are the most unpredictable tem one day they chase 300 the next day they fail to chase 250 and sometimes escape chasing 245.

Posted by larkykid on (March 7, 2014, 22:11 GMT)

Yeah yeah, SL may be Lions, but they're also the most negative and boring team around. At least teams like Pak and Ind bring a bit of excitement about them but as reported above, SL go "about their business quietly" zzzzzzzzzzz

Posted by JohnSnider on (March 7, 2014, 22:06 GMT)

Only way Pakistan can win is using Junaid , Anwar Ali, Fawad Alam, and definitely drop Umar Gul as he is not in the form, use Bilawal or Talha instead. Moreover find a spinner alrounder like Shaib Malik as afridi cannot bowl nor he can field. So use him for few minutes in fielding and then send the 12th man to substitute as he can still bat well.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2014, 21:54 GMT)

Saeed Ajmal will lead pakistan to glory this time

Posted by JohnSnider on (March 7, 2014, 21:51 GMT)

Both teams are equal no body would win and no one would lose. Only thing is if Bangladesh crowd behind Pakistan then Pakistan would win. One more thing are umpiring if umpire made mistake then of course the team on receiving end would lose the match . Remember against India the Jadeja made 52 runs was clear LBW and umpire totally rejected it and all the fielders and commentator were in shock. So umpiring is going to decide who wins who loses not the players. They must use DRS system or great mistakes would happen. Use technology . Would you travel by Camel to another country or Airplane?.

Pakistan win plz pray for Pakistan and afridi 100 % fit this match Ian sure play this game

    Posted by t20cric on (March 7, 2014, 21:41 GMT)

With the way SL's recent matches & Pakistan's recent matches have gone we all know it will be a thriller. If you look at recent Pakistan vs SL matches they have been even closer. Pakistan will need to handle pressure to win this one & give Malinga some respect for his good bowling. If Afridi cannot play then Pakistan will have a physiological disadvantage which will be a disaster. I think Pakistan should go with the following team.

    1.Ahmed Shehzad/Sharjeel Khan(whoever is fit), 2.Mohammad Hafeez, 3.Sohaib Maqsood, 4.Fawad Alam, 5.Misbah-ul-haq, 6.Umar Akmal, 7.Shahid Afridi, 8.Anwar Ali, 9.Umar Gul, 10.Saeed Ajmal, 11.Junaid Khan

This way the team is pretty balanced & the batting is upto no.8. Pakistan also can drop Sohaib if they want & shift everyone up to put Bilawal at no.8. With this team Insha Allah Pakistan will win.

Tough one to call - It's vital that the opening bowlers bowl tightly - Any width and they will be punished like in the earlier game between the 2. Whatever happens SL will play their shots and I hope that Pakistans fielders are UP for the challenge. Batting wise they need to keep their heads including strike rotation. Let's hope they stay with the run rate if chasing. Chasing 8+ in a final is highly pressurised in the last 10-15 overs. Fortune Favours The Brave - but use your head

As a Indian I support pakistan brothers will win. Sri lanka cant score 250 runs. Dilshan is not there. Against pakistan they wont even score 200. Pakistan will win easy. They got pace, Spin and batting all better than srilanka. Jayawardene not in form he should be changed. Can replace with dilshan. Atleast dilshan can score. Sangakara finals wont score. Chandimal not in form. Thirumanne flopped last game. This finals never. Kushal perere cant say anything again will flopp. so go go go pakistan brothers cup is yours.

Be it Pakistan or Srilanka (it would be a non Big-3 team) i love pakistan srilanka games as it was in T-20 final. well and I really respect srilankans for always been supportive.

We will not forget that when no international team came to Pakistan it was srilanka who welcomed and visited PaKistan. So best of luck to both teams :)

Does tomorrow's match remind anyone of the ICC World T20 2009? We all know what happened and which player smashed opposition's great bowlers to all parts of the ground.

the match will be a seesaw, so be careful, team batting 2nd will be in a difficulty, lets hope for pak to win, i reckon this match to swing to both the sides many times, so those who hedge them will be in a benefit.

They have been unbeaten through the tournament. So good Luck Lions too... I sense a win for PAK in final, providing there isn't a batting collapse again. Go Greens....

Pakistan have tremendous record against SL specially in crunch games like final, semi or must win situations but as we all new every game is a new one but in cricket history does matter to keep opponents under pressure. Being a Pakistani, my best wishes are with Pakistan but I am also sure even on paper Pakistan is better team than SL. Best of Luck Man In Green.

I hope we drop Chandimal. I don't know why he's captain of the T20 team anyway. Let him play tests and establish himself, then get him in to the ODI side to bat up the order. He's of no use unless he's batting in the top 4 because he lacks the big shot talent.

Posted by ThilankaK on (March 7, 2014, 19:27 GMT)

Hey SL fans May the better side win on the day !!! we are brothers !!! Its a game of cricket guys ! Sanga's & Hafeez's class , Afridi's & Kusal's power, Misba's & Mathews calmness , Ajmal & Ajantha's mystery , Maliga's & Gul's depth bowling !!! wow, what a final , two best side's in Asia !!! minor sides like BAN, IND & AFG thrash out !! what a competition !! true champions came to the final !!!

Posted by   on (March 7, 2014, 19:21 GMT)

I have pak blood but don't mind Lions to win as They have always been my 2nd favorite team after Pak of course. Give us a good and enjoyable match so whole world can see some great cricket. Good luck to both teams.

Look earlier Sachin Tendulkar were just a ordinary batsman like Chandimal & his 1st ODI century came after 78 innings , 1st match got out for 0 (zero) but because of other minor batsman, below par batsman in the Indian team he became the Indian GOD of the cricket playing after 24 years but when kohli came to the seen GOD kicked out of the team !! They test status acquired in 1932 , ODI in 1974 & two billion people in the country but only 4 batsman achieved international standard its Sunil ,Sachin, Rahul & Kohli , because of other team mates are below par they looks like Gods ! but now everyone knows God Of Cricket is Kumar Sangakkara out of 20 million people in SL !!! what a talented people's country is SriLanka !!! Im a sri lankan fan n always believe the lions will take the trophy. Although Pakistan got the luck at most of the finals, i believe SL got more talent n unbilieveble form, so that no losses in 2014. Even at a criticle stage, SL team can execute the game plan. for more information, SL team consist of all 11 batsmen. The No 11 batsman Malinga has also scored a 50 against Ausis. Also SL got 2 fast bowl allrounders Mathews n Thisara. 3 spin allrounders Sachithra, Priyanjan , Chathuranga. n Mendis too. ( he got test 50 against Pakistan) And superb form top order batsmen. Great Sanga, Mahela , n Blaster Kusal n Thirimanna who is in form. so why not SL win this game......????? Btw, love the pakistan fans n there players too. They are not like Indian big heads n our countries are always friends. So, lets celebrate tommorow, who ever the team wins... So, wish u all the best Lions to win the finals n come back as an UNBEATEN team... budusaranai!!!

"Ultra sorry for India as they were ousted by a tiny nation"

Seriously, what kind of self - respecting individual says things like that??

Every country, big or small, can make a mark in the sporting world. Ever heard about the New Zealand Rugby Team? They are world - class. And they became world class because they do not harbor insecurities regarding the size of their nation.

Sporting excellence is hardly dependent on size. Some of the smallest European nations are sporting powerhouses. Netherlands is smaller than Sri Lanka but has achieved excellence in hockey as well as in soccer.

The West Indies was a tiny collective of islands and look at the way they ruled cricket.

Have some pride in your own country and stop mentioning the limitations of your size. Maybe then you guys can get on with it and produce a world - beating side.

And believe me, Indian fans loved that West Indian side. So, there's no reason y we won't appreciate a world class Lankan side.

    Cheers & atb 4 tomorrow

Hope the great Afridi's injury doesn't prevent him from making it into the final. It somehow wont be the same without him. As for Sri Lanka... It's hard to drop a legend for poor form, so I suggest that Mahela opens the batting with Perera. He usually scores well from there...Perhaps Chandimal should be kept out too. His form isn't good at all and his place can be taken by Priyanjan who can give good support with the ball and considerable sting in the lower middle order batting.

Posted by bplusa on (March 7, 2014, 18:15 GMT)

Momentum is with Pakistan & hope it will continue in the final match as well.Special request to Bangla Desh Crowed; Don't be biased just encourge the players of both the sides and let the better team to win.

I am of the opinion that Pakistan is going to win the Asia cup and depend the title. I think Pakistan should make two changes, Junaid Khan must play and he should come in replacing Muhammad Talha and Anwar Ali should replace Abdul Rehman. Junaid has the experience and Anwar Ali will give depth to Pakistan's batting beside his bowling and feilding abilities.I hope Pakistani's will play to their potential and no one can stop them from winning, they have the momentum and thay will keep it up. Best of luck Team Pakistan

    Posted by kr_kinshuk on (March 7, 2014, 18:10 GMT)

Frankly speaking, either of these two sides could win tomorrow.

While Pakistan generally have tended to be luckier in the past when it comes to winning finals, Sri Lanka have hugely experienced team.

Logically, Sri Lanka with Sangakkara, Mahela, Mendis, Matthews, Malinga in their side begin with a big advantage and if I was a Sri Lankan fan I'ld be expecting a win. Anything less would be a major failure given the gap in the sheer experience.

But I've a hunch that Pakistan will win. Because this is how they win trophies. They will scrape through the league stages doing barely enough to get to the knock out stage. The other side will have expended considerable energy in winning more games but on d-day, pakistan brings its best game to the party and Bang, the trophy is theirs.

The problem with SL cricket is all these greedy capitalist cricketers who have ruined things. We need to clean house and get rid of sangakarra, mahela, mathews, sachithra, ajantha mendis, malinga, dilshan, thisara perera and give it to the selfless cricketers who deserve it more. Make chandimal captain of the test, ODI and t20 teams and give deserving guys like ramith rambukwella, heshan ramanayake a good chance and we will win the world cup again!!

Posted by   on (March 7, 2014, 17:44 GMT)

SL shall enjoy the additional support of Bangladeshi and Indian supporters in the Final, SL have the edge as they have more experience of playing ICC tournament finals in recent times although losing all those, if SL can keep Hafeez, Shehzad and Akmal + Fawad combined score to less than 150 or par score as per pitch conditions they will have a fair chance, Malinga can take good care of Afridi and for Pak, Sangakkara, Mathews and (Thirimanne + Jayawardene) will be the men to watch. It will be the biggest test for K Akmal's wicket keeping abilities, bowlers in both teams are steady with Pak holding their nose in front as far as bowling is concerned but overall SL will be starting favourites against historically winning favourite opponent Pakistan. Hope there will be a good game of cricket.

Pakistan will win tomorrow InshALLAH!! simply because they will want to come hard at the Lankans to make up for the loss in the opening game. Other than that, the teams are preety even steven and i expect a closely contested contest. One advantage that i think Pakistan has is that their management has seem to improve quite a lot. Seeing Moin Khan and Zaheer Abbas sitting together is an eye candy for any Pakistani fan, both are fighters. To make things better, seeing Rashid Latif as selectors speaks volume to the merit decisions that we will see in the future inshALLAH. Good luck to Sri-Lanka, but bring it home PAKISTAN. #BleedGreen

@ lovelanka, Nicely copied from Chris Gayle... Hope u remember that final mate! lets do a small head count shall we??? Pakistan Shezad, Hafeez, Akmal, Fawad, Afridi, Ajmal, Talha are in superb form. Misbah only fires when others dont. Afridi always do well against SL even if he is in very poor form. Sri Lanka Kusal, Mahela, Chandimal, teribly out of form Malinga sucks on finals, Thirimanne, Thisara, Sachithra totally unpredictable. so it seems like Pak all d way to me mate!

This combination will give Pakistan depth in their batting and the side will have 6 bowlers, 3 Pacers and 3 Quality spinners

This should be a great match between the two top teams in Asia. I am Pakistani fan, but also love the SL team. I find the games between Pakistan and SL are some of the best I've seen in a long time, since the two teams are so close to each other in every aspect.

As much as I want Pakistan to win...I won't mind losing to SL, since they are a great bunch and I love the SL fans! Respect for both teams.

SL XI should be: 1 K Perera 2 L Thirimanne 3 K Sangakkara 4 D Chandimal 5 A Priyanjay 6 A Mathews 7 C de Silva 8 T Perera 9 S Senanayake 10 L Malinga 11 A Mendis | Like it or not guys, Chandimal has to stay in and get experience, he is, after all, the T20 captain. (Although I hope he doesn't read Cricinfo articles that would have comments concerning him, they would be a huge demotivating factor. I mean, he can only see 'drop Chandimal' or 'Chandimal doesn't deserve his place' so many times before he completely loses his confidence and self-esteem)

SL remains unbeaten in a major series after 18 years. SL has featured 4 world cup finals since 2007, but were able claimed none of the titles. Form of Mahela is the only real worry in the side, though there is a chance of him opening the final. If everyone else move don the order to facilitate him to open, SL have better chance. Toss will definitely be key, whoever win will decide to field allowing dew to play some part in the late of game. SL can experience with Prayanjan who had a good series against Pakistan in UAE in place of out of form Chandimal who doesn't deserve a place in playing eleven.

If Sri Lanka to win this match team should be, Perera,Thirimane,Sangakkra,Jayawardane, Chandimal,Mathews, Perera, Senanayake, Mendis, Prasad, Malinga. Some of players out of form however at some point need come into form. Experience of jayawardane or chandimal can buy from others. What's the reason silva in the team or Priyajan everybody knows it is matter time until they vanish.

    Comeon Sri Lanka!!

Posted by   on (March 7, 2014, 16:24 GMT)

Pakistan's spinners have a slight edge? A slight edge? Come on! Pakistan's spin bowlers are far better than their Sri Lankan counterparts. I like both teams so no bias, but Pakistan also have a massive advantage in fast bowling, despite the below-par performances from their seamers this tournament.

Clearly, Sri Lanka has the superior batting line-up, and Pakistan's injury problems are a concern, but as the article states, the middle order has improved massively during this tournament. It looks more solid than it has done in a few years. Afridi has done very well with the bat in Bangladesh but not so well with the ball. He will be a loss if he doesn't play, but not the difference between winning and losing IMO.

Shehzad and Akmal have a century and a fifty+ each. Alam has a 50+, Hafeez has two of them. Maqsood and Misbah have struggled but I think the fans can be optimistic of posting a good total.

Pakistan to win by 30-40 runs if they bat first, by 3-4 wickets if they bat second.

Asia Cup Finals is tomorrow as every cricket fan in Pakistan and living around the globe would know. Lala Afridi is back, it is like the 2nd coming of Boom- Boom as Lala . Sixes are the same, the fitness we saw has a bit doubtful. But let us hope that his Physical Trainer has done his job. Pakistan is better in chasing the target rather than setting up a target. Both sides have met in 12 finals and share 6 wins each.

Best of luck Pak team...wish you all the luck to win the trophy for the second time...Ind fan

Pak can win tomrrow if they use their players well. They shouldn't include unfit Sharjeel and should go with Fawad. Fawad should bat at 3 Misbah 4 and U Akmal 5. They can't win if they play U Akmal at 8 again. A Rehman should not be any where near the team.

They can bring Bilawal Bhatti for his skiddy Pace, Best of luck Pak win the tournment ...

I am hoping Chandimal does not play and it could be the same side as yesterday with Malinga replacing priyanjan. The chances of Chandimal scoring 50 + very unlikely and Chaturanga even if he gets about 30 + will compensate. Will need to strengthen our bowling against the Pakistan batting . Matthews not bowling is a slight imbalance and hence will need to go into this game wiith 3 pace bowlers including Tissara and 3 spinners in Chatu , Mendis & senanyake . Remember Chatu & Sena are decent bats and will have batting then upto 8 . malinga must be given 3 overs upfront , 2 in PP and keep 5 overs in death from overs 41-50. Sena can be given the ball even as early as the 5th over and may not be a bad strategy to open bowling with Sena as well. Good luck lions and hoping Mahela gets his rhythm back in this key game . SL top 4 in batting must click and needing a big score 80+ from one and 2 others must score 50+ for SL to win . Need to get Afridi out asap as he could change the game anytime

This edition was one of the many mediocre ones in the Asia Cup's history. Lack of intensity, rash shots, missed chances, compounded by glaring umpire errors had been the highlights. Why this tournament, if people concerned are not keen.

Iit was started by the Satraps of cricket in these countries to "show" ICC that they can have their own tournament to rival typical ICC events. That purpose is outdated. The advocates of that doctrine are only shadows in the periphery. Why this sham, then?

Trust me, this final will belong to Mahela Jayewardena!!!

    Posted by Matt.au on (March 7, 2014, 15:56 GMT)

    Pakistan by a whisker.

They have an exciting bunch of players that are combining well. Their future for many years to come looks promising.

Having said that, I have thought the same about Pakistan, many times over the years, only to be disappointed.

Posted by ispaewbi on (March 7, 2014, 15:55 GMT)

If Afridi couldn't participate, Pakistan will lose the match psychologically just getting on the ground.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2014, 15:52 GMT)

SL have edge in this game such as they handle Ajmal well and bat deep down, hope SL will give the fans a win in a final after few years

I am Pakistani I worried about mahela jayawardne bat quite in this tournament may be he sacored a big ton and SL win this match. Good luck team Pakistan

Best of Luck Team Green.. Give your best shot.. and can play with five bowlers and bring SharJeel on top..

Posted by   on (March 7, 2014, 15:47 GMT)

    Best of luck Pakistan.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2014, 15:46 GMT)

should not risk by going in with unfit players. cant afford 1 batsman less or bowler going out of game. If every one fit then Fawad alam should be playing instead of sharjeel. But if Ahmed not fit then yes have to force changes.

Misbah should not come at 3. move every body up in order if hafeez is opening. that is maqsood, fawad, misbah, umar .

I also agree that with 3 fast bowlers , batting will be thin. need anwar ali/bhatti in there.

Cant depend on afridi as you never know.

form of paksitani fast bowlers is a concern. junaid has not picked any wicket and Talha had a poor match against BD. dont know which wicket wil be used. the wicket in SL vs BD was too slow but in BD vs Pak game 300 was easy. .

SL is firing well and most of them are in form. plus point is that they bat deep. only issue is mahela/chandimal. but bowlers are performing so well.

    Good luck.

Go ahead Sri Lanka, demolish Misbah, Afridi and co.-From BD.

What should a team do to start as favorite other than winning all the matches which they have participated in group stage? Can someone explain to me?

All the Best SriLanka from Nepal.

There appears to be a danger that when Malinga gets back into the side, as he undoubtedly should, that Lakmal or Senanayake will be dropped. I would play both these players, dropping a batsman and the obvious choice would be either Chandimal, Kusal Perera or Mahela. If Kusal is dropped, then Mahela should open the batting with Thirimanne. My personal view is that a trusted and respected servant of Sri Lanka Cricket and a living legend like Mahela should play, with the drinks responsibility being given to either Kusal or Chandimal. I do not think this would affect the balance of the team.

    Posted by Great_Lion on (March 7, 2014, 15:36 GMT)

This time sri lanka will win the final because of the trusted players sri lanka have at the moment. mathews,Thisara, sachithra, sanga and malinga(at death overs) are really confident players with their rolls.I predict sri lanka have 70% chance to be a asian champs.Good luck lions, mind you "we great lions fight till the end".

    Posted by immi2711 on (March 7, 2014, 15:35 GMT)

Agree with Russel...we need Anwar Ali in the side and Alam for some stablilty and balance....But like the editor said....SL looks like more balanced and playing as a team...From a distance it looks like SL are fav, I dont know how you can call Pak going in as favorites.....

    Posted by cricket_slcsupport on (March 7, 2014, 15:33 GMT)

This article is more about Pakistan, just for namesake they have written a paragraph about Sri-Lanka. Anyhow, I won't be surprise if SL choke in the final, they have done it in the past, history will repeat. Anyway, I'm not going to watch the match, Best of Luck SL.

Posted by dmqi on (March 7, 2014, 15:31 GMT)

I like both team, but prefer SL as a better and balanced side.

Misbah and Hafiz needs a coaching about running between wickets, so does most pak players. Short of IQ. Fuwad Alam must bat at #3/4. Maqsood may be dropped and Batti should be included. The lazy batsman needs to learn fielding and should not bat up in the order. Horrible decision to play Akmal at #8 was the biggest joke in the last game. Afridi may not be the savior for the 3rd time.

good luck pakistan in final GOD bless you go green go long life pakistan

hopefully this will be another cracking match between these two giants of asian cricket..Hoping for a SL win but good luck to both teams as normally, if we cant win, we want our Pakistani brothers to win..

Posted by swatshot on (March 7, 2014, 15:26 GMT)

It has been a great tournament so far with so many close matches decided only in last over. I hope final to be the closest among all with the decision to come on the last ball only. All the best to both the teams.

"while Dinesh Chandimal and Mahela Jayawardene have looked out of form" lol no surprises there ,Chandimal looked out of form since the day he joined the SL Team

If Chandimal plays, Sri Lanka's chances are slim.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2014, 15:18 GMT)

Either Anwar Ali or shirjeel in place of Talha

Posted by   on (March 7, 2014, 15:18 GMT)

Pakistan must drop one fast bowler and bring in one allrounder either bhatti or talha ' rest of the teams looks really good

Posted by   on (March 7, 2014, 15:13 GMT)

Sl have allways been the chokers in Finals and their performance reminds Grand Slam Tennis Finals finished in straight sets.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2014, 15:12 GMT)

Tisara Perera should come before Chandimal. This guy is too good to bat at No. 8

    Good luck green team PAKISTAN

Looking at the form of sri lanka, they look like the favourites to win the cup, but at the same time they will go into the final with lot of pressure, they know that don't have a good history in the last 5 years when it comes to finals. but if they can get rid of that pressure and come through as asian champions, it will give the confident for the world t20, because sri lanka look by far is the most healthy team to win the t20 cup, they know the bangladesh conditions better than any team after speeding nearly 2 months in bangladesh now.

its gonna be a big day for SRI LANKA CRICKET tomorrow. WE have been the most consistent team in ICC events or any triangular tournaments. The time has come to win final hurdle.

COME ON LIONS… WE WILL ROARRR!!!!!!! TOMORROW. GOOD LUCK BOYS. BRING THE ASIA CUP AND T20 WORLD CUP HOME

    Posted by Syed_imran_abbas on (March 7, 2014, 15:05 GMT)

I hope a fit team plays against srilanka. Junaid shouldn't have been dropped in last match too. Good luck Pakistan and I hope to see a good contest with our srilankan friends and win for Pakistan.

Posted by bootlicker on (March 7, 2014, 15:05 GMT)

I think this is a fair comment. Without Afridi there is no match between SL and PAK.

Posted by   on (March 7, 2014, 15:00 GMT)

Since chandimal averaging 53.5 in last 6 games against pakisthan and also he was the highest run scorer against pakisthan in last series he deserve to play in final! may be mahela should rested and play priyanjana

Posted by LeftBrain on (March 7, 2014, 14:59 GMT)

Should be a good contest. Two better teams from Asia are competing in the finals, which is a good thing. Both team are playing final on merit, not on mathemetical caluclations. Sri Lanka has a litte edge though as some of important Pakistan players are not fully fit. I think it will all boil down to how Sangakara and Malinga play from SL and how Afridi and Ajmal play from Pakistan. I will be up at 3 in the morning to watch this match!!!

Posted by Muttee on (March 7, 2014, 14:57 GMT)

Best of luck to both teams, looking forward to a great contest.

Pakistan making big mistake , they need to drop one bowler and go in with an all rounder at number 8 , Anwar Ali
