Afridi, Shehzad among Pakistan's injury concerns

Misbah-ul-Haq expects high-intensity final

Soon after Shahid Afridi had reached his half-century against Bangladesh on Tuesday, Pakistan's physio had run out to the field to attend to him. Struggling to move after that, Afridi was run out. Three days later, he was still walking gingerly when Pakistan trained on the eve of the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka.

"Shahid Afridi has a grade one hip flexor strain," their manager Zakir Khan said. "Our physio is working on him. He's been given rest and treatment.

"Hopefully tomorrow, before the start of the match we will know the complete situation about Afridi. He has responded well to the treatment. We are all analysing and assessing his situation. Tomorrow we will take the final decision about Afridi."

Afridi isn't the only Pakistan player with a fitness issue.

"We have little bit of niggles and strains to Ahmed Shehzad who was struggling with his shoulder," Zakir said. "He's also responding well to treatment. He's coming up well. Umar Gul was little bit stiff but he's also coming out of it."

Zakir added that Sharjeel Khan, who had missed the Bangladesh game with a knee injury, was "nearly 98% fit. He batted and fielded at the nets and looked good today."

From these comments, it seemed as if Sharjeel and Gul would probably be fully fit in time to play the final. Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan's captain, didn't provide too many clues to the likelihood of Afridi and Shehzad making it.

"Obviously your main players make a difference to the side," Misbah said. "We are, however, mentally strong. You may have seen [Fawad] Alam played really well in absence of Sharjeel Khan. The confidence level is very high. All the members of the team have been performing well. There is a will to win. We hope to get them in the side but at the same time we're confident that even if they don't play, we have the boys in the bench who are capable and confident to win the game for us."

Pakistan should not worry about this game to take chaces on Afriridi. Sri Lanka will go through this. Most important is WC t20 and make surethe medicore india is kicked out before the semis. For that you need Afridi. No matter who wins today.Sri Lanka and Pakistan are brothers.

  • on March 8, 2014, 4:09 GMT

I don't like to watch pakistani match Without Afridi. I hope he will play today inshahallaha

  • on March 8, 2014, 4:05 GMT

I hope all Pakistan players are fit for selection today - A Sri Lankan fan.

  • on March 8, 2014, 3:40 GMT

I think that if a player is not 100% fit he should be rested because just round the corner there is world t20 and these players have huge impact in t20 format bilawal or anwar ali is good replacement for umar gul. we need umar gul in world t20 so dont take gamble by playing him if he is fit than he is the best option. I suggest that dont take this tounament lightly either but keeping in mind the fitness for star players in mega event.

Consecutively wining or being a runner-up is a default for Sri Lankans. No one prove such stability during past decade. Loose or not, we knows where we are in cricket… Stability is differ than the luck or rare win. Well done SL and bring the trophy :) - ujbandara

  • Malinsom on March 8, 2014, 2:23 GMT

Afridi isn't a big problem for Sri Lanka. He's just a normal player against good teams. I guez.. misbah is a better player than Afridi.

  • Cpt.Meanster on March 8, 2014, 0:51 GMT

This is a meaningless tournament to be honest. The World T20 is the main deal and I want every Pakistani and Sri Lankan to realize that. As an Indian supporter I am happy India are not playing in this final because it gives them a wonderful opportunity to get ready for the World T20 making them one of the favourites to win the championship.

  • on March 7, 2014, 23:56 GMT

Sri Lanka will win .mahela would be the key .

  • on March 7, 2014, 23:21 GMT

Hope Pak will win this and repeat the history

  • on March 7, 2014, 22:57 GMT

This is the game I am gonna enjoy to the core. I am a Sri Lankan and I love my team to the death however Pakistan is my second most favorite team. I witnessed the love and support they gave us during our WC final match against Australia in 1996. Love you Pakistan... Let's hold the Asia Cup together... Win or lose we will be the best friends...

  • hoodbu on March 7, 2014, 21:36 GMT

Dear Misbah: Fawwad Alam and Sharjeel Khan shouldn't be even mentioned in the same sentence. Fawwad Alam has been benched for far too long. It is time he gets chances like Asad Shafiq. It is Fawwad Alam's time now to shine. He is too good a player to be waiting for so long. Who is Sharjeel Khan?

  • Ahmedpakistan6 on March 7, 2014, 20:48 GMT

Afridi should watch the highlights of the ICC World T20 2009 final.

  • Herath-UK on March 7, 2014, 20:24 GMT

Come on, somebody in the tournament committee has forseen this & given extra two days rest to Pak team to get them over injury worries. How lucky Pak is?Sri Lanka have no such favours.Come on Lanka you deserve the win.

  • bouncer709 on March 7, 2014, 20:13 GMT

sharjeel, shehzad, hafeez, fawad.Misbah, sohaib, umer akmal, Afridi/Anwar ali, Gul, Ajmal, Junaid ... Hafeez can do 10 over against SL, if required Misbah can use sohaib and fawad for few overs, so he will have option in death overs.

  • on March 7, 2014, 19:45 GMT

I hope they include Mohammad Talha in the line up

  • waqas-ahmed-qasi on March 7, 2014, 17:55 GMT

I hope Pakistan will win tomorrow, but Sri Lanka have slightly advantage over Pakistan because they have won last match played between them and some of key Player' s from Pakistan team are injured, Afridi ,Shehzad. However Sharjeel is 98% fit . I suggest Pakistan team for tomorrow is; Shehzad,Hafeez,Sohaib,Fawad,Misbah,Umar Akmal,Shahid Afridi,Bilawal,Gul,Junaid,Ajmal.

  • on March 7, 2014, 16:32 GMT

  • siddhartha87 on March 7, 2014, 16:14 GMT

Hopefully Shehzad and Afridi gets fit for tomorrow.Shehzad is definitely their best batsman. Squad for tomorrow-

    1. Shehzad 2.Shrajeel 3.Hafeez 4.Maqsood 5.Misbah 6. Umar Akmal 7. Fawad 8.Afridi 9. Gul 10.Ajmal 11.Junaid

My XI for the thrilling and stunning final is as following: Ahmad Shahzad, Muhammad Hafeez, Sohaib Maqsood, Fawad Alam, Misbah Ul Haq, Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Umar Gul, Junaid Khan, Bilawal Bhatti and Saeed Ajmal. Hopefully, InshALLAH and with the suport of Almighty God, THE GREENIES are going to win it. So lankans DEAL WITH IT.

  • on March 7, 2014, 15:48 GMT

Give rest to all of them as we have already played a final against India. So it doesn't matter who wins it. Keep them fit for t20 World Cup. Please don't take a chance especially on afridi

  • immi2711 on March 7, 2014, 15:24 GMT

We need Sharjeel up front with Shehzad....but Shohaib has not produced in Asia Cup, and shoud make way for Alam...

  • on March 7, 2014, 15:22 GMT

will be a big blow if Ahmed and Afridi miss this final. Ahmed has been in good form and got scores in all games. and afridi is going well. But sensible thing would be to go in with fit players. so that no mid innings problem occur. especially in Gul's case. already seen the result of 1 main bowler going down in game vs BD.

Fawad should be playing. no matter sharjeel is fit or not. but if ahmed is not playing then sharjeel can come in. would be wrong to bring him for fawad.

Almost all batsmen have scored some runs in this event so that is a good sign. Need to click at right time.

It has always been the same old story from Pakistan. Whenever they play to the best of their ability they give the worst and in fact one sided performance in final. Let's see whether they can will be able to break the jinx tomorrow or not.
