Asia Cup, 1st Match: Pakistan v Sri Lanka at Fatullah, Feb 25, 2014
Asia Cup - 1st match
Sri Lanka won by 12 runs
Played at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, Fatullah (neutral venue)
25 February 2014 - day/night match (50-over match)

1.55 pm Almost everything is in order for the first ball. Kusal Perera and Lahiru Thirimanne, who made his return from injury in Sri Lanka's last ODI walk back out onto the field. Pakistan are in last-minute warm-ups as the bowling coach Mohammad Akram has a long chat with Junaid Khan. But it will be Mohammad Hafeez to get the first go. Two left-handers in the middle, and there is a slip, short cover and short midwicket in place

Imosh: "Feels like there is too many juggling done in the SL 11. They have given so many chances to young players during the recent times. SL needs to try and build a proper and consistent 11. "

1.50 pm The teams have lined up behind the boundary boards. Not much by way of a crowd, but whoever's there are hiding under any shade they can find. The Pakistan fans make themselves heard as their team walks out to the middle. Misbah appreciates their support with a wave of his hand. Time for the National Anthems

Widuruwan: "Chaturanga de Silva's First-class form is impressive, looking forward to see him batting. Wish Chandimal was replaced by Mendis"

Uncle cric: "At last Pakistan back in action again... love to see combination of struggling batting line up with energetic top class bowling line up..."

1.40 pm Well, we know a bit of what to expect after the toss but in case you're still thirsty for more info, look no further than Andrew Fernando's preview.

vasanth: "What is the role of Chandimal in the current team??? I don't think he deserves place in the playing11. Please prove me wrong at least today Chandimal" Ah, the anti-jinx.

Hunbbel Meer: "Sangakkara is like old wine. The older it gets, the better it becomes. It gives me shivers down my spine whenever I see him batting against my team. Such a legend!"

Kamran: "There's almost no way that anyone would prefer Fawad Alam over Sohaib Maqsood in an international. Fawad Alam is a unique sort of a player. He has been performing very well (and very consistently) in domestic cricket for as long as anyone can remember. But on the international stage, he has always looked as uncomfortable with a bat in his hand, as a fish out of water. He is the definition of "ungainly"."

1.30 pm Sri Lanka have won the toss and will bat first. Chaturanga de Silva is making his ODI debut. "Kulasekara and Dilshan are out, but we have a full strength side apart from them," says Angelo Mathews. It's a new game, a new tournament and we have to be on our guard. Getting momentum early and pushing it along is important. They're a very good side and Misbah is in great form as well"

Mustafa Beckham: "I hope Umar Gul doesn't dissapoint as his form in ODIs & tests is pretty average in the last 4 years...."

"There's no better thing for a batsman than to be in form and scoring runs," says Misbah-ul-Haq. "Don't really know what to make of this pitch, but the last time we played here it was quite slow. We're playing the same side that played in Abu Dhabi last time"

1.20 pm "These are things I can't control. Injuries just happen on and off, but I had a good break and it's been a long season after quite a few Tests," says Mahela Jayawardene. Good to go back home and have a bit of time off. The wickets have been different and it's always been a challenge playing here. The guys are used to it but this is cricket and anything can happen. So we have to be prepared. We played Pakistan in the UAE, they're a very talented bunch. Can't make took many mistakes and take control of the game early"

Wasantha WIjewa: "Dilshan? He is no more a big gun. A mere pistol." That holds a bit of water considering his recent innings: 8, 3 in ODIs. 3 and 0 in T20s.

ali ahmed: "fawad alam or sohaib maqsood? Interesting to see" The toss is up in a few minutes. We'll know soon

Sampath: "SL needs Prasanna for this match. PK have lots of right handed batsmen. Prasanna would be good with bat too in the lower middle order. Him with senanayake would be a good combination."

1.15 pm Several of you have talked about Pakistan's balance, including the captain himself. Questions will always follow their top-order around, but either way they always promise a spectacle. Their bowling though is a completely different picture. Junaid Khan, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal. I'm so glad I'm only a commentator

Daniel Alexander: "Sri Lanka will miss Nuwan Kulasekara, accurate bowling and quick runs with the bat are irreplaceable #QualityPlayer" And Herath too. How are Sri Lanka going to replicate the control he gives in the middle overs

Rifard Akurana: "@ali ahmed when he was in school maybe?"

Roshan : "Mahela always got good runs when he is opening batting .if kusal and mahela get good start sri lanka team have good chance here to win the match . "

Danish Naseer: "watch out for Sharjeel Khan, he is an exciting prospect !" He did make a big splash, hitting fifty on ODI debut

1.10 pm It's a little breezy in Fatullah where a flat, well-rolled pitch reaches us. Lots of runs in the offing. There is a bit of dead, frayed grass on the pitch to try and keep a bit of moisture in there and hold it together. It might skid on initially and the odd ball can keep low and come off the track slower, so the spinners would have a big role to play. Dew might play a part in the evening as well, so the captains will have to accommodate that as well.

ali ahmed: "best of luck Misbah ,the man in form ..." When was the last time anyone saw him out of form, I wonder?

Yasir: "Pakistan team looks great on paper. If the batting line-up can compete, they'd be hard to beat in this tournament."

Roshan: "this time its all about Sri Lanka,,,this is the time to get the revenge,,,"

1.00 pm It's Asia Cup time, just in case we haven't had enough of subcontinental cricket. Although, I'll admit there are a few things that have set this tournament up rather nicely. We have a brand new team in Afghanistan participating in this year's event. The thrill of the unknown can never be underestimated, here's hoping they cause a few upsets. And in the same vein, India will be looking to Virat Kohli and see how captaincy fits on him. Bangladesh have had a less than stellar lead up, but they are playing at home and they usually save some of their best cricket for the Asia Cup. But those aren't on the menu for today. It is Sri Lanka, without one of their big guns in Tillakaratne Dilshan against a very well-set Pakistan, whose bowlers are bound to pose greater threat than they've had to face in the last month or so.

1.3

Umar Gul to Thirimanne, 1 wide, too far outside off stump to bother Lahiru into playing

Umar Gul to Thirimanne, FOUR, leans into this extra cover drive. Times it very well as he reaches nicely forward and puts away the full length ball with a bit of width outside off

1.5

Umar Gul to Thirimanne, no run, fullish and outside off, strides forward and defends into the covers

End of over 2 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 7/0 (RR: 3.50)

    • HDRL Thirimanne 5 (7b 1x4)
    • MDKJ Perera 1 (5b)
    • Umar Gul 1-0-5-0

2.1

Mohammad Hafeez to MDKJ Perera, no run, flighted on middle and leg, nudges to midwicket from the crease

2.2

Mohammad Hafeez to MDKJ Perera, no run, shortish and he was making some room to cut. But the ball sneaks under his bat. Worrying signs?

2.3

Mohammad Hafeez to MDKJ Perera, no run, worked away to midwicket, but can't beat the man

2.4

Mohammad Hafeez to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, goes wide of the crease, but his length is poor. Kusal rocks back and this time nails the cut. Proper bounce on that and he thumps it behind point

2.5

Mohammad Hafeez to MDKJ Perera, no run, lunges forward to try and get to the pitch, but this one goes straight on and gets the inside edge as he defends

2.6

Mohammad Hafeez to MDKJ Perera, no run, prefers the safety of this crease this time as he defends the length ball

End of over 3 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 11/0 (RR: 3.66)

    • MDKJ Perera 5 (11b 1x4)
    • HDRL Thirimanne 5 (7b 1x4)

3.2

Umar Gul to Thirimanne, no run, back of a length on and around off stump, defended into the covers

3.4

Umar Gul to Thirimanne, no run, plays late and close to his body as he opens the face again. Runs it down, but only as far as slip

3.5

Umar Gul to Thirimanne, no run, length ball outside off, defended off the back foot. That didn't bounce very much at all

3.6

Umar Gul to Thirimanne, 2 runs, fullish, but he's on the pads and he's far more comfortable there, clipping it away to long leg

zafarjaveds: "@Deepak Langer: But in Pakistan's case, they get derailed even on batting paradise pitches while chasing, so that might have tempted Mathews to bat first."

End of over 4 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 13/0 (RR: 3.25)

    • HDRL Thirimanne 7 (13b 1x4)
    • MDKJ Perera 5 (11b 1x4)

4.3

Mohammad Hafeez to MDKJ Perera, no run, fullish and keeps it tight on the stumps, defended

4.4

Mohammad Hafeez to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, makes his own room and slaps it behind point. It was a tiny bit short but that was enough for him to take full toll. Struck that so cleanly

4.5

Mohammad Hafeez to MDKJ Perera, no run, was wondering when he would do that. Charges Hafeez., but can only push it back to the bowler

4.6

Mohammad Hafeez to MDKJ Perera, no run, flighted just outside off, lunges forward and defends

End of over 5 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 17/0 (RR: 3.40)

    • HDRL Thirimanne 7 (13b 1x4)
    • Mohammad Hafeez 3-0-10-0
    • Umar Gul 2-0-7-0

Ahmad: "Sri Lanka better to change their mode of playing. They need to be more aggressive to put pressure on opposition." Five overs into the game? Nah

5.1

Umar Gul to Thirimanne, 1 run, steers this away to deep third man as he sees this with a bit of room outside off. Uses Gul's pace quite nicely

5.2

Umar Gul to MDKJ Perera, no run, punched into the covers even though there wasn't too much room on offer. Sways his upper body a little leg side of the ball to get some leverage into the shot, but he can't place it in the gap

5.3

Umar Gul to MDKJ Perera, no run, jags back in sharply and he was in no position to counter it. Gul thinks he has his man, but the umpire thinks it might go over the stumps. Kusal was setting up for the cut again as he made some room, he this hits the deck and ducks inward. His bat was too slow coming down. Saved if only by a whisker

5.4

Umar Gul to MDKJ Perera, no run, shortish and in the channel, Kusal stands up and blocks

5.5

Umar Gul to MDKJ Perera, no run, is on the back foot and uses hard hands to defend into the covers

End of over 6 (1 run) Sri Lanka 18/0 (RR: 3.00)

    • MDKJ Perera 9 (22b 2x4)
    • HDRL Thirimanne 8 (14b 1x4)
    • Umar Gul 3-0-8-0
    • Mohammad Hafeez 3-0-10-0
6.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Thirimanne, no run, tossed up on off stump, no troubles for Lahiru's straight bat

6.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Thirimanne, 1 run, shortens the length which allows him to go back and punch just wide of mid-off

6.3

Mohammad Hafeez to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, chips down the track and having reached the pitch, pushes to long-on

6.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Thirimanne, no run, straightens a bit as Lahiru covers his stumps and defends under his eyes

6.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Thirimanne, FOUR, lovely timing through the covers from Lahiru again! It was hit on the up, but with so little spin on offer he basically treated this as a medium pace delivery and hit through the line off the front foot

6.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Thirimanne, no run, comes forward and defends the flighted ball on off stump

Chinmaya: "Why hafeez has started instead of junaid.." Pakistan have used that tactic quite a bit to curtail early runs and it almost worked at the other end

End of over 7 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 24/0 (RR: 3.42)

    • HDRL Thirimanne 13 (19b 2x4)
    • MDKJ Perera 10 (23b 2x4)
    • Mohammad Hafeez 4-0-16-0
    • Umar Gul 3-0-8-0
7.1

Umar Gul to MDKJ Perera, no run, pushed into the covers, but there wasn't much footwork there. Think that went off the outside half of the blade too. Good areas from Gul

7.2

Umar Gul to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, carts this away over wide long-on. Kusal has had enough of scratching around as he goes after this length ball outside off. Full swing of the arms carries this through to the boundary. Didn't get all of it, though

7.3

Umar Gul to MDKJ Perera, OUT, he has his man this time. Edged through to the keeper! The cross-seamer generates a bit more bounce and the angle away from him is just perfect. And that is enough to snare the outside edge of Kusal's poking bat. It was in that length where he was still wondering whether to go forward or back even as he nicks off. Easy catch to Akmal behind the stumps

MDKJ Perera c †Umar Akmal b Umar Gul 14 (29m 26b 3x4 0x6) SR: 53.84

Out walks Kumar Sangakkara. How many times has he come in early and took his side out of trouble...

7.4

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, no run, length ball outside off, calmly allowed through to the keeper

7.5

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, FOUR, full and wide outside off, Sanga leans forward and threads it through the covers. Effortlessly done and yet he looks so elegant

7.6

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, no run, fullish and around the off stump, Sanga is forward and his defence is solid

Muhammad Noman : "Umar Gul.You beauty...." Seconded

End of over 8 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 32/1 (RR: 4.00)

    • KC Sangakkara 4 (3b 1x4)
    • HDRL Thirimanne 13 (19b 2x4)
    • Umar Gul 4-0-16-1
    • Mohammad Hafeez 4-0-16-0

Here's Junaid Khan. Good move, especially with Sanga early in his innings

Daniel Alexander: "Present and future Sangakkara batting together, its real not EA sports "

8.1

Junaid Khan to Thirimanne, no run, very full and just a touch outside off, Kusal is forward and pushes into the covers

8.2

Junaid Khan to Thirimanne, no run, back of a length on off stump, blocked towards mid-on

8.3

Junaid Khan to Thirimanne, no run, shuffles to cover his stumps and punches to point off the back foot as Junaid goes shortish and outside off

8.4

Junaid Khan to Thirimanne, no run, length ball in the channel again, he pokes at it with an angled bat again and gets an inside edge.

8.5

Junaid Khan to Thirimanne, 1 run, draws him forward this time and Lahiru isn't afraid to drive on the up. Short cover is on hand to stop it though. But the parry is enough to sneak a single

8.6

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, full and wide outside off, this time Sanga cannot time the cover drive. Guess this pitch really is slow

joji: "@Muthu, there are no easy catches to Akmals. Every catch held is a reason enough for a public holiday in Pakistan. *tongue in cheek*"

End of over 9 (1 run) Sri Lanka 33/1 (RR: 3.66)

    • KC Sangakkara 4 (4b 1x4)
    • HDRL Thirimanne 14 (24b 2x4)
    • Junaid Khan 1-0-1-0
    • Umar Gul 4-0-16-1
9.1

Umar Gul to Thirimanne, no run, beats short cover, but hasn't timed it enough to evade mid-off. It was full and on off stump, driven off the front foot

9.2

Umar Gul to Thirimanne, 1 run, shortish and angled across him, Lahiru opens the face to exploit the gap between point and cover

9.3

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, no run, good length ball probing just outside off, Sanga plays late and guides it behind point

9.4

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, 2 wides, loads of effort into this one and it shows as this quick bouncer beats Akmal behind the stumps even with him leaping as high as he could. Sanga had no troubles evading it though and then sneaks a single. Impressive height to the short ball

9.4

Umar Gul to Thirimanne, no run, fullish and straight, Lahiru turns it away to square leg

9.5

Umar Gul to Thirimanne, FOUR, pierces the gap on the off side again, maybe those comparisons with Sanga are not totally unfounded. It was the cross-seamed delivery again, but this one is a bit tame. Lahiru is forward and exploits the room outside. Flayed off the front foot

9.6

Umar Gul to Thirimanne, 1 run, fullish on middle and leg, nudges it to the right of midwicket. Nicely placed

Shifat: "In my opinion, I wouldn't use Umar Gul now. I'd save him until the game goes towards the 30th over. " He might well be off after that over

End of over 10 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 41/1 (RR: 4.10)

    • HDRL Thirimanne 20 (29b 3x4)
    • KC Sangakkara 4 (5b 1x4)

10.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Thirimanne, 1 run, flighted on middle, driven to long-off

10.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Sangakkara, no run, skips down the track, but the bowler is wise to it as he shortens the length. Defended

10.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Sangakkara, 1 run, flighted on off stump, easily pushed to the man at long-off again

10.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Thirimanne, no run, fullish on off stump, Lahiru is forward and tries to force it through the covers. No such luck

10.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Thirimanne, no run, so he plays with softer hands and angles the bat, still can't beat cover

10.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Thirimanne, no run, bit short and seems to have bounced on the batsman a bit more. Lahiru is back and has to uses his wrists to keep it down

End of over 11 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 43/1 (RR: 3.90)

    • HDRL Thirimanne 21 (33b 3x4)
    • KC Sangakkara 5 (7b 1x4)
    • Mohammad Hafeez 5-0-18-0
    • Umar Gul 5-0-24-1

Ananya: "Nice to see Gul steaming in..... hope he does not break down...." Misbah must be wary of that. Junaid has taken over at this end

11.1

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, creams it, but cannot beat cover. Gee, that man's been busy in the last few balls. Full and wide outside off and he climbed into it.

11.2

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, 1 run, walks at him and nudges this length ball to the left of mid-on

11.3

Junaid Khan to Thirimanne, FOUR, finds the gap behind point! Affords a bit of width and Lahiru is only too happy to get on the front foot and slice it away. Too well timed for deep third man to bother

11.4

Junaid Khan to Thirimanne, no run, length ball on middle and leg, clipped to midwicket

11.5

Junaid Khan to Thirimanne, 1 run, short and just outside off, Lahiru pulls to deep square leg. Didn't go all out on it though

11.6

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, good length ball just outside off, guided in front of point

Ashar : "Gonna be doing a heart dissection in my bio class next period. At the same time, will be checking the score on cricinfo" Hope your teacher's tuned in too, just so you can get away with it

End of over 12 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 49/1 (RR: 4.08)

    • KC Sangakkara 6 (10b 1x4)
    • HDRL Thirimanne 26 (36b 4x4)
    • Junaid Khan 2-0-7-0
    • Mohammad Hafeez 5-0-18-0
12.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Thirimanne, no run, carves the length ball to point. Held this one back to prevent Lahiru from lunging forward

12.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Thirimanne, 1 run, nice and tight on middle, and the length is very good too. Makes the batsman force the pace as he hits down to long-on

12.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Sangakkara, FOUR, skips down the track and lofts over wide mid-on. Hafeez's stranglehold is not working here. No turn to worry him and Sanga heaves it away into the leg side

12.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Sangakkara, 1 run, tossed up on off stump, driven to long-on

12.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Thirimanne, 1 run, punched through the covers but there is protection in the deep

12.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Sangakkara, 1 run, flighted on middle, pushed to long-on. Sanga is now 12000-plus while playing in Sri Lankan colours

End of over 13 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 57/1 (RR: 4.38)

    • KC Sangakkara 12 (13b 2x4)
    • HDRL Thirimanne 28 (39b 4x4)
    • Mohammad Hafeez 6-0-26-0
    • Junaid Khan 2-0-7-0
13.1

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, the keeper is vociferous in his appeal and the bowler joins in later, but the umpire is not so keen. Sanga was skipping down the track and was looking to flick it off his pads. No bat involved though as it strikes pad and the back foot and goes through to Akmal

13.2

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, fullish and just a touch wide off off, defended

13.3

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, FOUR, dances down the track and just met the ball with a straight bat. That's all he did. Wasn't to the pitch of it but it doesn't matter on this pitch.

13.4

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, walks at him this time, but Junaid manages to angle this in on a good length and gives no room. Sanga gets an inside edge onto pad

13.5

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, 1 run, worked away wide of mid-on as this was shortish and outside off. Used the crease nicely as he moved across outside off

13.6

Junaid Khan to Thirimanne, 1 run, room outside off, but the field is set to protect the bowler erring short and wide. Hit uppishly but in the gap and it finds its way to the sweeper

End of over 14 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 63/1 (RR: 4.50)

    • HDRL Thirimanne 29 (40b 4x4)
    • KC Sangakkara 17 (18b 3x4)
    • Junaid Khan 3-0-13-0
    • Mohammad Hafeez 6-0-26-0

Looks like Misbah doesn't like Hafeez against Sanga. Here's Bilawal Bhatti

14.1

Bilawal Bhatti to Thirimanne, 2 runs, back of a length just outside off, Lahiru eases it to the third man boundary but the fielder manages to run around and keep it inside the playing field

14.2

Bilawal Bhatti to Thirimanne, 1 run, bit too straight was this length ball and he whips it to deep square leg

14.3

Bilawal Bhatti to Sangakkara, no run, magnificent strike, for no runs though! Strong stride forward to this fuller delivery just outside off. Driven with complete authority to mid-off

14.4

Bilawal Bhatti to Sangakkara, 1 run, plays too early and gets a leading edge into the covers. Length ball on middle and leg forces the mistake

Anil Katwal: "It"s showing 12268 carrer Odi runs for Sanga, But you said he just crossed 12000, for Srilanka did he Scored 268 for Another country ?" He's played for the ICC XI and Asia XI as well, so yeah

14.5

Bilawal Bhatti to Thirimanne, no run, length ball worked away into the leg side, but can't find the gap

14.6

Bilawal Bhatti to Thirimanne, no run, looks like he's hurrying the batsmen here. It was just short of a good length and seemed to skid onto him quicker. Lahiru keeps it out, but only just about

End of over 15 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 67/1 (RR: 4.46)

    • HDRL Thirimanne 32 (44b 4x4)
    • KC Sangakkara 18 (20b 3x4)
    • Bilawal Bhatti 1-0-4-0
    • Junaid Khan 3-0-13-0

Arif Abedin: "Thirimanne got the start, his 57 matches with 28 avg but just one 100! can he make it another today?"

15.1

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, presents an open face but plays close to his body to guide the shortish delivery to point

15.2

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, 2 runs, eases it through point and cover. It was full and wide outside off and Sanga needs no second invitation for that cover drive of his. Sweeper mops up but they sneak a couple. Lahiru was struggling though

15.3

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, 1 run, walks at him and nudges it just in front of point. Another risky single but they hustle through.

15.4

Junaid Khan to Thirimanne, 1 run, fullish on and around off stump, driven solidly to mid-off

Tariq: "600th intl appearance for M Jayawardene today. Only the 2nd cricketer to reach the milestone. Tendulkar being the other." That's a pretty nifty spot, mate

15.5

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, 1 wide, shortish, but this goes down the leg side. Sanga allows it through to the keeper knowing this would be wided

15.5

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, 1 run, pushed to the sweeper as this is on a length with a bit of room outside off

15.6

Junaid Khan to Thirimanne, 1 run, think that stayed low, but Lahiru controlled it well. Clips the length ball angled into him to long leg

Bilawal Bhatti to Thirimanne, 2 runs, clipped to the left of mid-on as this is bowled shortish and on the pads. Only rose as high as the batsman's knees though

16.2

Bilawal Bhatti to Thirimanne, 1 run, another harmless little whip to long leg as he goes short and on leg stump again. Wrong line to bowl with a 7-2 off side field

16.3

Bilawal Bhatti to Sangakkara, 1 run, too straight again and Sanga clips it to deep square leg. No risk, easy run and that's the fifty partnership

16.4

Bilawal Bhatti to Thirimanne, FOUR, perfectly placed! He waited so long that the ball was almost past him before he brought the horizontal bat down on it to give it direction and power. No chance for deep third man

16.5

Bilawal Bhatti to Thirimanne, no run, back of a length on middle and off, defended

16.6

Bilawal Bhatti to Thirimanne, FOUR, shortish and on leg stump, not quite the best place to bowl considering his field and he's been reminded of that as Lahiru swivels on the back foot and pulls just behind square leg ump and that will be drinks

Junaid: "Pakistan's bowling is looking a little flat! or is the pitch playing a role?" Oh, it's contributing heavily

17.4

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, 1 wide, goes short and Sanga ducks under it. But it is just a touch down the leg side

17.4

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, 1 run, tucks him up with a length ball and Sanga clips towards midwicket and sets off straight away

17.5

Junaid Khan to Thirimanne, 1 run, digs it in again, this time well enough outside off. But Lahiru doesn't mind pulling it to square leg.

Azeem: "Bowlers would have preferred playing on a cement wicket compared to this!" Lets see how Bilawal Bhatti goes in his second spell

19.1

Bilawal Bhatti to Sangakkara, 1 leg bye, big shot for leg before! Was terribly close too, but this might have pitched outside leg. Yes. Skids on to Sanga who was late on his shot, which was coming down around his front pad. Would have crashed into the stumps, but it doesn't matter

19.2

Bilawal Bhatti to Thirimanne, 1 run, length ball, whipped away through square leg to raise his first fifty since last July. Good pitch to bat and he's taking advantage

19.3

Bilawal Bhatti to Sangakkara, 4 leg byes, moved outside off to nudge this away off his hips. Bhatti's pace does the rest. This doesn't even come off the bat but races away very fine

19.4

Bilawal Bhatti to Sangakkara, 1 run, slower ball on leg stump, Sanga waits and clips it to the rather square long leg

19.5

Bilawal Bhatti to Thirimanne, no run, this is nice and full on the stumps. Lahiru keeps it out and inspects his bat. That had a bit of heat

19.6

Bilawal Bhatti to Thirimanne, 1 run, back of a length, tucks it away off his hips to long leg

21.1

Shahid Afridi to Thirimanne, no run, starts off with a full toss outside off, Lahiru can only bunt it back to the bowler

21.2

Shahid Afridi to Thirimanne, 1 run, length ball on off stump, pushed to long-on

23.5

Shahid Afridi to Sangakkara, 2 runs, flighted outside off and Sanga threads it between extra cover and mid-off. Precision placement from Sanga to bring up the hundred partnership. Great effort from Gul too to keep it from hitting the ropes

29.2

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, FOUR, don't bother running. This was overpitched outside off and Sanga dismisses it over mid-off. Lovely balance to enable the stroke as he looks simply to beat the man inside the circle but with the kind of timing he has, this was always a boundary

Abdul Waheed: "The current situation is well favoring Pakistan, because they feel more comfortable chasing 280-300 instead of 200-220." Eh, only time can tell, I suppose

35.1

Saeed Ajmal to Jayawardene, 1 run, flatter delivery on the pads, Mahela clips it to deep square leg

Minor break in play as Lahiru Thirimane calls for the physio. Seems he has a bit of problem in his left hand. It's terribly hot out there. Cramps, perhaps?

35.2

Saeed Ajmal to Thirimanne, OUT, off stump is knocked back! Was he playing inside the line there? Yep, but that was because Ajmal gets this fuller delivery to turn just enough. It was a loose drive taking the bat away from his body as he stayed rooted outside leg stump and perishes. Ajmal has his hands raised in triumph.

HDRL Thirimanne b Saeed Ajmal 102 (155m 110b 11x4 1x6) SR: 92.72

Though he couldn't carry on Thirimanne has set Sri Lanka up. Angelo Mathews, the captain, is out there to try and take advantage of the platform that has been so well set

35.3

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, no run, flighted on off stump, defended off the front foot

35.4

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, no run, more turn as he bowls this just a bit shortish and on the stumps. Mathews makes room and cuts to point

35.5

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, no run, flighted on middle, turns it away to midwicket

35.6

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, no run, lovely line as he targets off stump. Mathews is forward and pushes back to the bowler

    • DPMD Jayawardene 6 (11b)
    • Saeed Ajmal 5-0-20-1
    • Shahid Afridi 6-0-36-0
36.1

Shahid Afridi to Jayawardene, no run, quick and flat and the off stump was in considerable danger as Mahela made room and was trying to late cut it away. Has to hurry his stroke but manages to keep it out

36.2

Shahid Afridi to Jayawardene, 1 run, fullish on middle and leg, Mahela clips it into the midwicket region

36.3

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, no run, flighted and angled in on middle, Mathews keeps his front leg out of the way as he defends

36.4

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, 1 run, whip of the wrists sends the flighted ball on off stump to deep midwicket

36.5

Shahid Afridi to Jayawardene, no run, skips down the track as he defends down the pitch.

36.6

Shahid Afridi to Jayawardene, 3 runs, short on middle and off, Mahela rocks back and pulls towards midwicket. Sohaib Maqsood has a lot of ground to cover from deep square leg and he fumbles on the boundary. What was two becomes three

Sabeeh: "What would Pakistan do without Ajmal? Deceiving a centurion is a very difficult task and Ajmal is one of the few bowlers who can do that. Truly stunning."

End of over 37 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 209/3 (RR: 5.64)

lakmal: "Thought SL will pass 300. But seems we will have to stop around 275 "

37.1

Saeed Ajmal to Jayawardene, 1 run, swept away to deep square leg. Solid stroke as this is flighted on off stump

37.2

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, no run, too close for that shot and Mathews gets away with it. Quicker delivery as he targets the top of off stump. Mathews stays leg side and guides to short third man

37.3

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, no run, whips to midwicket as this is flighted but on the pads

37.4

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, FOUR, holds this one back as he looks to tuck the batsman up on middle and leg, so Mathews moves outside off and slog sweeps him with considerable power.

37.5

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, SIX, charges him and deposits the ball over long-on! Didn't quite reach the pitch, but that only enabled him to get further leverage on the stroke as he let his arms swing free

37.6

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, no run, can only turn this length ball to midwicket

End of over 38 (11 runs) Sri Lanka 220/3 (RR: 5.78)

38.1

Shahid Afridi to Jayawardene, 1 run, fullish and drifting down the pads, comes to him a little quicker as Mahela works it away behind square leg

38.2

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, 1 run, flighted on middle and off, Mathews is forward and clips it through square leg region

38.3

Shahid Afridi to Jayawardene, 1 run, drops short of deep square leg as Mahela indulges in a slog sweep. Wasn't all that full and he got it off the toe

38.4

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, 1 run, goes back as he pushes the length ball to long-off

38.5

Shahid Afridi to Jayawardene, OUT, the star man does it again! Chops onto his off stump! Looks for that late cut once again, but this one comes in at him. Mahela is thoroughly deceived as he gets a thick nick onto off stump. Misbah is grinning the largest I have ever seen him

DPMD Jayawardene b Shahid Afridi 13 (33m 19b 0x4 0x6) SR: 68.42

No sign of Dinesh Chandimal still. Here's Thisara Perera

38.6

Shahid Afridi to NLTC Perera, 1 run, targets leg stump and Thisara has little trouble clipping through square leg

End of over 39 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 225/4 (RR: 5.76)

    • NLTC Perera 1 (1b)
    • AD Mathews 13 (13b 1x4 1x6)
    • Shahid Afridi 8-0-46-1

39.1

Saeed Ajmal to NLTC Perera, 1 run, nicely tossed up on middle, Thisara is forward and clips behind square leg

39.2

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, no run, quicker, fuller delivery on middle and off. Turned away to midwicket again

39.3

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, 1 run, manages to nudge this to the right of midwicket to sneak a single

39.4

Saeed Ajmal to NLTC Perera, 1 run, length ball on off stump, Thisara shuffles across and clips between midwicket and mid-on who are both back so Ajmal has to run after it himself. Does well to keep it to a single

39.5

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, FOUR, short and it has just enough room for Mathews to cut behind point. There is no one in the deep over there since we are still in the powerplay. Terrific stroke

39.6

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, no run, flighted on middle and off, Mathews lunges forward to defend

End of over 40 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 232/4 (RR: 5.80)

    • AD Mathews 18 (17b 2x4 1x6)
    • NLTC Perera 3 (3b)
    • Saeed Ajmal 7-0-38-1
    • Shahid Afridi 8-0-46-1
40.1

Shahid Afridi to NLTC Perera, no run, length ball on middle, Thisara goes back to work to midwicket

40.2

Shahid Afridi to NLTC Perera, 1 wide, shortish and it is far too wide down the leg side. Thisara doesnt even bother

40.2

Shahid Afridi to NLTC Perera, 1 run, goes deep in his crease to work this length ball away to the right of short fine leg

krishna: "classmates, allrounders and equal highest induvidual score 80* players and good finishers. And complement each other with right and left hand. Should be good to watch"

40.3

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, 1 run, flighted on middle, he is forward and defends softly into the covers. Good, quick single

40.5

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, no run, flighted on off stump, strides forward to defend

40.6

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, 1 run, this slides in with the arm, but Mathews does well as he tickles it to short fine leg

End of over 41 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 237/4 (RR: 5.78)

    • AD Mathews 20 (20b 2x4 1x6)

Off goes Ajmal. his three overs have been hoarded for the death. Bilawal Bhatti is brought back.

Dhanushka: "Few overs before the power play SL were 8 per over but on the PP they were under 6 and lost 2 wickets. I think power play is not a bonus for the batting team as most of the teams expect. "

41.1

Bilawal Bhatti to Mathews, no run, good length ball on off stump, Mathews prefers to go back and clip into the leg side

41.2

Bilawal Bhatti to Mathews, 1 run, back of a length and just outside off, punched to mid-off and they scamper through. Good urgency

41.3

Bilawal Bhatti to NLTC Perera, no run, full and angled across him, Thisara looks to blast that through the covers but can't connect

The Pakistani contingent are making a ton of noise here.

41.4

Bilawal Bhatti to NLTC Perera, 1 run, low full toss on middle and leg, Thisara whacks it to long-on

41.5

Bilawal Bhatti to Mathews, 2 runs, shortish but right over off stump. Mathews made his own room and dabs to point. Good running to take the single, and even better to steal the second as Misbah fails to back up the throw properly

41.6

Bilawal Bhatti to Mathews, FOUR, fullish and he simply lofts it to the long-off boundary. Bounces just inside the advertising skirting. Lovely striking from Mathews as he came on the front foot and hit straight through the line

End of over 42 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 245/4 (RR: 5.83)

    • AD Mathews 27 (24b 3x4 1x6)
    • NLTC Perera 6 (8b)
    • Bilawal Bhatti 4-0-27-0
    • Shahid Afridi 9-0-51-1
42.1

Shahid Afridi to NLTC Perera, OUT, heaved away to deep midwicket and he has holed out! The spinners are bringing Pakistan back into this big time. Afridi exults after duping the batsman with a wrong 'un. Thisara was forced to slog against the turn and he cannot beat the man on the boundary

NLTC Perera c Ahmed Shehzad b Shahid Afridi 6 (16m 9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

Chaturanga de Silva on ODI debut has come ahead of Dinesh Chandimal.

42.2

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, 2 runs, shortish and just outside off, punched down to long-off

42.3

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, no run, chopped to short third man as this was flatter and outside off

42.4

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, 2 wides, fires this full and down the leg side. Akmal can't get across in time and they scurry through for a single before short fine mops up

42.4

Shahid Afridi to de Silva, 1 run, gets off the mark straight away, pushed to mid-off

42.5

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, no run, flighted on middle and off, Mathews defends and looks for the run but cover is too quick on it

42.6

Shahid Afridi to Mathews, no run, almost found the gap between point and short third man. He had waited nicely on this shorter ball outside off but his placement is not quite up to the mark as point moves to his left and dives to keep it to none

End of over 43 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 250/5 (RR: 5.81)

    • AD Mathews 29 (28b 3x4 1x6)
    • PC de Silva 1 (1b)

Junaid Khan has been brought back

43.1

Junaid Khan to de Silva, 1 run, full and just outside off, de Silva drills it to long-on

43.2

Junaid Khan to Mathews, no run, steers into the covers and he almost sold his partner out. He called for the run but came to his senses soon enough. Has a wry smile on his face as Afridi misses the stumps

43.3

Junaid Khan to Mathews, OUT, this time the stumps are broken and de Silva was not even in the frame. Another yes-no situation as Mathews edges this to point. Shehzad was quick on the ball, took aim and does brilliantly. Sri Lanka are losing the plot here

PC de Silva run out 2 (5m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Dinesh Chandimal comes in at No.8

43.4

Junaid Khan to Mathews, 1 run, back of a length and outside off, Mathews pushes to long-off

43.6

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, no run, a whip of his wrists sends this shortish ball outside off to midwicket. Loads of effort for nothing

Vicky: "Shahid Afridi is proving himself as a match game changer. His 2 wickets have completely changed the course of the match." Don't forget Ajmal castling the centurion Lahiru Thirimanne

End of over 44 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 252/6 (RR: 5.72)

    • LD Chandimal 0 (2b)

Aha, here's Saeed Ajmal, from around the wicket

44.1

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, 1 run, good length ball on leg stump, clipped behind square leg

44.2

Saeed Ajmal to Chandimal, no run, slides on with the arm as Chandimal goes back and pushes into the covers

44.3

Saeed Ajmal to Chandimal, 1 run, goes down the pitch and works this flighted ball on leg stump through midwicket

44.4

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, no run, bit of a misfield from Misbah, but the batsman are wary of a run-out now. Nudge to midwicket results in another dot ball

44.5

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, 1 run, eased away behind square leg

44.6

Saeed Ajmal to Chandimal, 1 run, manages to tickle it away but short fine leg hurls himself at it to keep that to a single

End of over 45 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 256/6 (RR: 5.68)

    • LD Chandimal 2 (5b)
    • AD Mathews 32 (34b 3x4 1x6)
    • Saeed Ajmal 8-0-42-1
    • Junaid Khan 6-0-29-0
45.1

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, 2 runs, shortish and angled across him again, but Chandimal's wrists do excellent work. Imbues enough power into the flick to almost take it to the square leg boundary.

45.2

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, no run, steered to point where he can't beat the fielder

45.3

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, FOUR, heaved away and he's placed this immensely well. Chandimal is making a statement here as he pulls to find the boundary. He was camped on the back foot, ready to take advantage of anything even remotely short. Hit well in front of deep square leg this time

45.4

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, 1 run, moves around the wicket and fires in a yorker on off stump, Chandimal digs it out to mid-off

45.5

Junaid Khan to Mathews, 1 run, brilliant yorker again, this one tailing on middle and leg. Mathews almost loses balance while he manages to push this to long-on

45.6

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, FOUR, slower ball beats both batsman and keeper! Chandimal was looking to flick it into the leg side and was into the shot way too early. Gets an outside edge which dies on its way to the keeper who cannot stop it going to the third man boundary

Twelve off the over and before that Pakistan had limited Sri Lanka to 10 in three overs

End of over 46 (12 runs) Sri Lanka 268/6 (RR: 5.82)

    • LD Chandimal 13 (10b 2x4)
    • AD Mathews 33 (35b 3x4 1x6)
    • Junaid Khan 7-0-41-0
    • Saeed Ajmal 8-0-42-1
46.1

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, no run, good length ball, tucking him up. Mathews works it to midwicket

46.2

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, 1 run, lap sweep earns only a single as he goes down on one knee and takes the ball on the full. The shot was on considering Ajmal's leg stump line

46.3

Saeed Ajmal to Chandimal, 1 run, employs the sweep too, but this one was tossed up on off stump and he can only ease it behind square leg. Not too much power in the stroke

46.4

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, 1 run, rocks back as he punches this shortish ball through to the sweeper

46.5

Saeed Ajmal to Chandimal, no run, leading edge to cover! Lovely flight from Ajmal as he fools the batsman, who was on the front foot looking to clip through midwicket.

46.6

Saeed Ajmal to Chandimal, no run, shortens the length but this was the doosra again. Chandimal does not pick it again as he looks to flick into the leg side. The outside edge wanders into the covers again and Mathews denies the single. Only three off that over

End of over 47 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 271/6 (RR: 5.76)

    • LD Chandimal 14 (13b 2x4)
    • AD Mathews 35 (38b 3x4 1x6)
    • Saeed Ajmal 9-0-45-1
    • Junaid Khan 7-0-41-0
47.1

Junaid Khan to Mathews, no run, that's darn near perfect! Fires a yorker on off stump and all Mathews can do is protect his stumps

47.2

Junaid Khan to Mathews, 2 runs, full toss on off stump, thumped wide of long-off. Managed to chip down the track and reach it before it pitched

47.3

Junaid Khan to Mathews, 1 run, inside edge onto pad and they scurry through for a single. This was a wide yorker and Mathews was looking to slice it through point, but doesn't succeed

47.4

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, 1 run, walks at him and converts the yorker on middle into a low full toss. Whipped away to deep midwicket

Sajid: "If Pakistan restricts SL below 300, it will be a huge booster for chase.."

47.5

Junaid Khan to Mathews, FOUR, what a shot! Mathews, you beauty! Made room for himself and he drills this low full toss over the covers. Terrific shot, inside out

47.6

Junaid Khan to Mathews, 1 run, guides this away to short third man as he makes a little room for himself against this shortish ball outside off

End of over 48 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 280/6 (RR: 5.83)

    • AD Mathews 43 (43b 4x4 1x6)
    • LD Chandimal 15 (14b 2x4)
    • Junaid Khan 8-0-50-0
    • Saeed Ajmal 9-0-45-1

shehan: "i feel like smashing the screen watching our batsman wasting such a good start.frustration level is too high."

48.1

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, 1 run, fires it in on middle, Mathews clips in front of square on the leg side

48.2

Saeed Ajmal to Chandimal, 1 run, moves across to off stump and works this tossed up delivery off his pads between square leg and short fine leg

48.3

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, 2 runs, goes for the slog through midwicket but he gets more of an inside edge. Wanted two and Chandimal motors to reach his ground at the non-strikers'

48.4

Saeed Ajmal to Mathews, 1 run, doosra from Ajmal as Mathews clears his front leg and taps it behind point.

48.5

Saeed Ajmal to Chandimal, no run, tossed up, but outside leg as Chandimal sweeps. Doesn't connect with bat but does so with the pad. So no wide either

48.6

Saeed Ajmal to Chandimal, no run, cut to point as this is on a length and pushed across him

Waseem Sarwar: "Ajmal is a class of his own. This spell from him might prove to be the difference in this match"

End of over 49 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 285/6 (RR: 5.81)

    • LD Chandimal 16 (17b 2x4)
    • AD Mathews 47 (46b 4x4 1x6)
    • Saeed Ajmal 10-0-50-1
    • Junaid Khan 8-0-50-0

C.Srihari: "Junaid Khan is one of the most underrated bowlers. Look at his strike rate and economy. Guess most captains would pencil him in their teams. He seems marked for bigger things."

49.1

Junaid Khan to Mathews, 2 runs, good length ball angled in at him. Mathews slogs for all he's worth, but only manages an inside edge to deep square leg

49.2

Junaid Khan to Mathews, 1 run, skips down the track and carves the low full toss to deep point. He's too disappointed on not putting that away to the boundary to realise he's got to fifty

49.3

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, 2 runs, attempts his own version of the dilscoop, but Junair was wise to it as he slows it up and bowls it wide of off stump

49.4

Junaid Khan to Chandimal, 1 run, yorker on middle and off, Chandimal jams his bat down on it and gets an inside edge wide of mid-on

49.5

Junaid Khan to Mathews, FOUR, slammed through extra cover. Made some room as he came down the track and though it was the cutter, Mathews has enough room to flay it to the boundary

49.6

Junaid Khan to Mathews, 1 run, terrific ball to end the innings as he delivers a yorker on middle and leg. Mathews digs it out to long-on

5.40 pm Sri Lanka had all the momentum even as late as the 36th over. They were 204 for 2 and would be disappointed to end up on 296. But once their centurion Lahiru Thirimanne was dismissed - off a beauty from Saeed Ajmal - Pakistan woke up and struck back. They got the yorkers in, Shahid Afridi's variations made their impact as they often do and in the end, this might well be a total Pakistan would fancy chasing. Join us in half an hour for the chase

Dinesh Chandimal though reckons Sri Lanka have posted enough. "Yeah, we are really happy with the way we batted. Sanga and Thirimanne gave us a really good start and Mathews gave us the finish. [On him coming at No.8] It was the best way to go, with the left and right hand combination. The pitch not quite easy to bat on, slow and holds up. Might be a good total. Dew will come into play but our bowlers would still do well"

Mujtaba: "another same pattern game between the two teams. Srilanka toporder started brightly, then PK bowlers made good come back then SL still finished strong... what to follow::: PK top order would start brightly but will soon falter only for good old Misbah to lead fight back...."

End of over 50 (11 runs) Sri Lanka 296/6

    • AD Mathews 55 (50b 5x4 1x6)
    • LD Chandimal 19 (19b 2x4)
