Parthiv Patel will join India's squad at the Asia Cup as a back-up for their captain MS Dhoni. According to a BCCI release, Dhoni suffered a muscle spasm in his back during a training session in Dhaka on Monday. Parthiv, the 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman, last played for India during the ODI triangular series in Australia in February 2012.

Parthiv has featured in just two T20Is, both in 2011, but has been in decent touch in domestic cricket; he was Gujarat's second-highest run-getter in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with 295 runs, including a century and a fifty, which helped the team clinch the title. He also stroked a century in the Deodhar Trophy last month, against India A in Kanpur.

ROBIN UTHAPPA - has not been given enough chances. he is better than parthiv patel.naman ojah, dinesh karthik...talented batsman...

Yuvraj is gonna be a liability. Better to play Negi in place of Yuvi. Parthiv should open with Rohit and Shikar Dhawan should drop to Dhoni's spot.

    whatever happened to Dinesh Karthik?

Problem is with the Finishing capabilities. With Yuvraj still yet to find form, the finishing is now in the hands of Raina and Jadeja...

Naman Ohja - has not been given enough chances. He did ever so well in Australia with India A - especially with the bat. Anyway we Indian fans want to see wins and it does not matter who is playing.

It's a kind of selection blunder considering Parthiv is regular opener and never a finisher like Dhoni. However, Rohit should captain India the whole tournament if Dhoni is unfit since Rohit has lifted two most recent IPLs

Wrong selection in place of MSD. we needs a lower middle order batsman wicket keeper at this point. how can use parthiv in place of rohit and dhwan? selector must take Naman Ojha, Dinesh Kartik and youngest sanju samsong or under 19th upcoming star rishabh pant. its time to test the young talent... not go to back.....

@SAMROY .. Very true. Selectors are goofing up big time. They omitted Mishra, picked Negi when we already have 2 left armers (Jadeja & Yuvraj). Shouldn't they have picked a hitter like Yusuf Pathan which we clearly lack? i am worried about this one middle order slot where we need someone to come in and hit straightaway (say 15 off 4-5 balls). What say?

There is no merit in the arguments made by some against Dhoni as player & captain. MSD is arguably part of the Super 4 of IND cricket along with Gavaskar, Kapil, Sachin. IND's great successes & big world title wins have been during 1979-86 (Gavaskar /Kapil as captain) & 2007 onwards (MSD as captain & Sachin ). During last 3 yrs IND has won 12 tests (7 under MSD) with top 2 match contributions in batting by Pujara(6),Vijay(5),Rohit(4),Rahane(3),Dhawan(2),Kohli(2),others(2) & in bowling by Ashwin(11), Jadeja(8), Ishant(2) & others(3). IND missed opportunities of test series wins in SA/NZ/ENG/AUS due to batting/fielding errors including 4 dropped catches of NZ batter that cost 350+ runs. IND has won CT 2013, ODI series in ENG in 2014 (after 24 yrs ), reached final/SF of T20 WC14/WC15. IND has played 19 ODIs from start of CWC15 winning 9. MSD's performances (4 failures, 4 contribution with bat in wins) is better than top 4 batsmen: Rohit (10,2), Dhawan(8,4), Kohli(10,2), Rahane-17(5,2).

I wonder how dhoni has such an inordinate say in selection matters. He first filled the team with his favourites and then denied Rahane a chance for 2- 3 years. After rahane proved himself, dhoni tried to destroy his confidence by shuffling rahane up and down the order (to accommodate his favourites) and by publicly criticising rahane. High time dhoni is asked to step down, otherwise we will be stuck with a team consisting of players like dhawan and jadeja.
