Asia Cup - 2nd match

Bangladesh v India

India won by 6 wickets (with 116 balls remaining)

Right! The fielders are making their way out. Tamim and Kayes are already there. Action!

Anuj notes something that missed our eye. Ashish Nehra is playing his 100th ODI today. Congrats to him, it's been while coming. He was one of India's heroes in the 2003 World Cup, before injuries and fitness intervened. The 2009 IPL gave him a route back into the spotlight and he has done reasonably well in the shorter formats since then.

Rahul Singh sends a comment that will find support and criticism in equal measure. He misses Yuvraj Singh in the Indian line-up. All of us do miss the Yuvraj of old, I am sure he is missing being here dearly as well. A few of you have written in expressing disappointment that Saurabh Tiwary has not got a look-in. The youngster's time will come. There was lot of swing and seam on offer, through out the game yesterday. Shoaib was impeccable, while Razzaq bowled a tight spell. Kulasekara, Malinga and Mathews all got the ball to talk for Sri Lanka. So India have probably done the right thing by picking three seamers. Praveen Kumar should like these conditions.

Much as we cricket tragics find it tough to imagine, there is another sport called football, and while the world's collective gaze is trained on the action here at Dambulla, the FIFA World Cup moves into its sixth day; Check out ESPN Soccernet for the latest news, reports and match action. And check out the Destination SA diary for views on vuvuzelas and the bitter cold from our writers in South Africa, including Cricinfo's Joy Gupta and Firdose Moonda

Bangladesh win the toss and decide to bat. Shakib: "We are confident of doing well. We are headed to England next, but looking to do well here." He then smiles sheepishly and says he does not remember his team! But he knows they are playing three seamers. We will take his word for that.. He reckons 240-260 is a good score. Sri Lanka defended 242 yesterday. Mashrafe Mortaza, Syed Rasel and Shafiul Islam are the three seamers, while Suhrawadi Shuvo will tweak 'em later in the day.

Dhoni: "WELL OF COURSE, we would have liked to bat first. Good for everyone that the seniors had a one-month break. The last time we had such a break was after the early exit from the 2007 World Cup. Dinda, Tiwary, Ashwin and Ojha are missing out."

So Ravindra Jadeja will be India's second-spinner cum allrounder - a role he has performed well in the 50-over format.

A warm welcome to game two of the Asia Cup! The big guns from India are back in business, with reputations to salvage. They begin their campaign against Bangladesh - on paper the easiest outing, but India know better than to take anyone lightly, following their Zimbabwe embarrassment. While we wait for the toss, time to reflect on yesterday's game - for my money one of the best ODI games in a long time. It had plots, it had sub-plots, it had superb performances from a clutch of superb players... and it had a close finish. If the Dambulla pitch continues to play like that through the next few days, we are in for a cracking Asia Cup.

I am Nitin Sundar, your commentator for the day, and Venkat Raghav is on scoring duties.

Kumar to Tamim Iqbal, no run, on a length outside off, driven firmly straight to mid off

Kumar to Tamim Iqbal, no run, again on a length, driven straight to mid off

0.3

Kumar to Tamim Iqbal, 2 runs, tucked away to the leg side this time to get off the mark

0.4

Kumar to Tamim Iqbal, FOUR, boundary! wafts at the width outside off stump, and the thick edge flies away to third man for four

0.5

Kumar to Tamim Iqbal, no run, again room outside off, but this time Tamim does not cash in. It goes straight to mid off

0.6

Kumar to Tamim Iqbal, 3 runs, four more! Width outside off, some movement for Praveen, but Tamim in this form is seeing it well and hitting it sweetly. Races away through the covers

End of over 1 (9 runs) Bangladesh 9/0 (RR: 9.00)
Tamim Iqbal    9* (6b 1x4)      P Kumar    1-0-9-0

1.1

Khan to Tamim Iqbal, 3 runs, tails into the pads first up, flicked away nicely to square leg for three

1.2

Khan to Imrul Kayes, FOUR, roobish ball, dealt with perfectly! Short and wide outside off, Kayes says thank you very much and whacks it square

1.3

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, finally, Zak gets the right length, darts away from the left hander from back of a length, leaves him in no man's land as he thinks about prodding at it

1.4

Khan to Imrul Kayes, 1 wide, slips down the leg this time

1.4

Khan to Imrul Kayes, FOUR, very ordinary start from India here. No pace, no movement, doled out on a length and the batsman goes through with the lofted drive over wide mid off

1.5

Khan to Imrul Kayes, FOUR, and again. Zaheer is taking some serious tap! Another nothing ball outside off, and whacked through, a little squarer than the last time but four more all the same

1.6

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, and a good ball to finish a bad over, bounces from a length and catches Kayes by surprise, but he lets it go

End of over 2 (16 runs) Bangladesh 25/0 (RR: 12.50)
Imrul Kayes    12* (5b 3x4)      Z Khan    1-0-16-0

2.1

Kumar to Tamim Iqbal, no run, back of a length on middle and leg, he gets behind a plays a rare defensive shot down to the on side

2.2

Kumar to Tamim Iqbal, FOUR, well, width and length again.. this was short and wide outside off, enough room for a whiplash cut that bisected the covers and ran away

2.3

Kumar to Tamim Iqbal, no run, better length and tighter line. No room for the cut this time, so it is played away quietly to the off side

2.4

Kumar to Tamim Iqbal, SIX, Whoop! Shades of Saeed Anwar there! Not a very bad ball, this one was straying marginally down the leg, Tamim got his front foot across, and picked it off his hips and flicked it high and handsome over square leg.

2.5

Kumar to Tamim Iqbal, OUT, aaaaand gone! Praveen persists with the 'Hit me' length ball outside off, Tamim goes for it again, driving uppishly, but could not find the gap. Raina takes a nice tumbling catch at cover, and India have redeemed a start that was rapidly going away from them. Praveen looks angry.. He always does! Whaddaplaya!

Tamim Iqbal c Raina b Kumar 22 (12m 12b 2x4 1x6) SR: 183.33

2.6

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, seams away from back of a length outside off, Ashraful rises on his toes and lets it go

Imrul Kayes    12* (5b 3x4)      Z Khan    1-0-16-0

3.1

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, more like the Zaheer we know. 136 kph, rising menacingly from a length and moving away. It is to Kayes' credit that he managed to not nick it.

3.2

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, hits the deck again, outside off, Kayes gets behind the line

3.3

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, another gem of an away-seamer outside off, luring Kayes into the uncertain prod, but he pulled the back in just as it darted away

3.4

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, continues to work outside off, this one dies after bouncing and Dhoni uses his pads to stop it

3.5

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, pitches up the sucker delivery on middle, but this one does not move away, and Kayes punch-drives, straight to mid on

3.6

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, Kayes is stuck in fisherman's cove here! Another peach of an away-swinger, Kayes is in a trance as he pokes the bat at it, but the ball was too good for him to nick. Great over

End of over 4 (maiden) Bangladesh 35/1 (RR: 8.75)
Imrul Kayes    12* (11b 3x4)      Z Khan    2-1-16-0
Mohammad Ashraful    0* (1b)      P Kumar    2-0-19-1

4.1

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, short and wide outside off, but Ashraful lets it pass

4.2

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, 1 wide, and again.. Praveen was testing the umpire with his past couple of balls, well outside off and this time it is called.

4.2

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, Brute! Praveen bowls at a friendly pace of 126 kph, but there was nothing friendly about the way that one took off from outside off. Ashraful just about sirvives nicking it

4.3

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, again wide outside off, but this time Ashraful keeps his distance as it passes

4.4

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, good ball, straightens from the leg stump and Ashraful gets behind and blocks to mid on

4.5

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, outside off once again, Ashraful shoulders arms

4.6

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, ah! Good ball to finish, he has seamed away all over, so swings in for the last ball. Ashraful spotted it and played the forward defensive to cover

End of over 5 (1 run) Bangladesh 36/1 (RR: 7.20)
Mohammad Ashraful    0* (7b)      P Kumar    3-0-20-1
Imrul Kayes    12* (11b 3x4)      Z Khan    2-1-16-0

5.1

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, Zak jags one back in and makes it very uncomfortable for the batsman. Kayes keeps it away, and Zak is rediscovering his mojo here

5.2

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, tight line outside off, not much movement, Kayes gets forward and defends to covers

5.3

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, slightly shorter but no width at all as Kayes looks to cut. Hits it hard into the ground and it is fielded by point

5.4

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, ducks into the left hander again, rapping him high on the pads and rolling to the off side

5.5

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, Peach! Jumps up from a length and moves away, as Kayes weaves away uncertainly - this unexpected bounce has always been Zaheer's strength

5.6

Khan to Imrul Kayes, FOUR, and a fine counter-punch from Kayes to end the over. This was pitched up a tad, and moved away slightly, but it was in the slot, Kayes took the challenge and drilled it straight of mid on for four.

End of over 6 (4 runs) Bangladesh 40/1 (RR: 6.66)
Imrul Kayes    16* (17b 4x4)      Z Khan    3-1-20-0
Mohammad Ashraful    0* (7b)      P Kumar    3-0-20-1

6.1

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run

6.2

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, 2 runs, short and wide outside off, Ashraful undercuts it and it bounces high over the head of slip and Ashraful is away with a couple to third man

6.3

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, back to the business length outside off, Ashraful plays the textbook back foot defence

6.4

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, length ball, exploring leg stump and straightening on the right hander, but Ashraful was adept to get forward and defend to point

6.5

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, shortens the length this time, pushes Ashraful back and he rises on his toes to defend to point

6.6

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, 2 runs, finally some innovation. Again back of a length outside off, but this time instead of the tame block, Ashraful opens the face and guides it to third man to scamper a couple

End of over 7 (4 runs) Bangladesh 44/1 (RR: 6.28)
Mohammad Ashraful    4* (13b)      P Kumar    4-0-24-1
Imrul Kayes    16* (17b 4x4)      Z Khan    3-1-20-0

7.1

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, angled into the left hander, pushing him back and forcing him to fend to the leg side

7.2

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, class! Zaheer does it again, angles in, lands and then goes the other way leaving Kayes bemused and befuddled, but without a chance of getting bat on it.

7.3

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, back of a length again, Kayes stays back and is uncomfortable with this line of attack. Defended to the off side

7.4

Khan to Imrul Kayes, FOUR, oh well. Every now and then Zaheer pitches one up, and Kayes is waiting for these like a child waits all year for Christmas. He pounces on it and smokes it through the covers

7.5

Khan to Imrul Kayes, 2 runs, slightly off target, slipping on to Kayess pads and he tucks it away for a couple

7.6

Khan to Imrul Kayes, no run, and back to the off stump channel to finish off. Kayes gets behind the line and defends to cover

End of over 8 (6 runs) Bangladesh 50/1 (RR: 6.25)

Mohammad Ashraful    4* (13b)      P Kumar    4-0-24-1

8.1

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, short of a length again from Praveen, on leg stump line and straightening. Ashraful is in a very cautious zone today, not going after these the way we expect him to

8.2

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, again, enough width outside off to elicit an almightly swing from the Ashraful of old. Today he meekly guides it to point

8.3

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, tight line just outside off, Ashraful looks to angle it away to the off side, but can't get it away

8.4

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, 3 runs, strays on the pads and Ashraful lofts it over the infield at midwicket for three

Bangladesh are yet to take a single!!! Incredibulastically bizarre!

8.5

Kumar to Imrul Kayes, no run, round the wickets this time and angled into Kayes who stays ack and defend to the leg side

8.6

Kumar to Imrul Kayes, 1 wide, that's a very tight call for wide outside off. Praveen looks disillusioned!

8.6

Kumar to Imrul Kayes, 2 runs, angled across, cut away and fumbled in the circle, it runs close to the off side fence before Nehra can get across and tidy up

End of over 9 (6 runs) Bangladesh 56/1 (RR: 6.22)
Imrul Kayes    24* (25b 5x4)      P Kumar    5-0-30-1
Mohammad Ashraful    7* (17b)      Z Khan    4-1-26-0

Still no single. This is as unbelievable as they come. Nehra to bowl.

9.1

Nehra to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, overpitched on off stump, driven hard into the ground, the fielder at short cover jumps up and fields on the bounce

9.2

Nehra to Mohammad Ashraful, 1 wide, sprayed well wide of off. Easy call for wide

9.2

Nehra to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, back of a length outside off, guided off the backfoot to point

9.3

Nehra to Mohammad Ashraful, 2 runs, that might have been the first single of the day, but Harbhajan Singh fumbled to give away two.

Bangladesh - No singles, and not ready to mingle.

9.4

Nehra to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, defends the short of length ball outside off

9.5

Nehra to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, drfits on to Ashraful's pads, but he can't cash in and it goes straight to midwicket

9.6

Nehra to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, shortens the length, but on leg stump again and Ashraful plays watchfully off his pads to midwicket.

End of over 10 (3 runs) Bangladesh 59/1 (RR: 5.90)

Bowling Powerplay taken.

10.1

Kumar to Imrul Kayes, 1 run, SINGLE! Cherish the moment folks! Praveen gets it to slant in, and Kayes' attempted guide to third man goes off the inside edge to fine leg.

10.2

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, short ball outside off, Ashraful fishes for it, looking to upper cut and makes no contact

10.3

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, stock ball from Praveen, keeps it steady outside off, he gets behind the line and taps

10.4

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, whoa! Slants into Ashraful who looks to glance and it loops down the leg side off thigh pad, Dhoni tumbles across and fails to pouch it cleanly, but saves some runs

10.5

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, defended from middle and leg line to the leg side. Ashraful is still on neutral gear.. he's not even revving the engine. Probably searching for his keys

10.6

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, and again. Tame defence outside off to end the over.

End of over 11 (1 run) Bangladesh 60/1 (RR: 5.45)
Mohammad Ashraful    9* (28b)      P Kumar    6-0-31-1

Nehra to Imrul Kayes, no run

11.2

Nehra to Imrul Kayes, FOUR, Nehra starts this over with a poor ball, strays on to the pads, Kayes gets back rises and flicks it off his thighs behind square

11.3

Nehra to Imrul Kayes, FOUR, and again. There is rust in the air and it is coming from the Indian pacemen, in their first couple of overs. Nehra serves a buffet ball outside off and Kayes whacks it confidently through the covers

11.4

Nehra to Imrul Kayes, 1 run, better line, closer to off and not full enough for the drive. Kayes opens the face and plays it to the off side

11.5

Nehra to Mohammad Ashraful, no run

11.6

Nehra to Mohammad Ashraful, 1 run, short and not so wide outside off, ashraful cuts it and it scurries down to the fielder behind square in the deep.

12.1

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, hint of away swing from Praveen, starts from middle and moves away. Ashraful nudges to the off side and looks for a single, but no luck

12.2

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, good ball. Opens him up with the away movement, from leg to off, and the leading edge pops up safely towards the covers

12.3

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, 1 run, goes outside off this time, Ashraful bends, reaches out and guides it to third man

12.4

Kumar to Imrul Kayes, 1 run, short and slow outside off, Tamim stays back and guides to third man.

The first ball of the previous over was not shown by the broadcaster. It was a dot ball, and we have now incorporated it.

12.5

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, FOUR, ah, releases the intensity with another gift. On leg stump, Ashraful has no problems glancing it very fine off the back foot

12.6

Kumar to Mohammad Ashraful, 1 run, compensates and lands this outside off, Ashraful opens the face and runs it behind point for a single.

End of over 13 (7 runs) Bangladesh 77/1 (RR: 5.92)

13.1

Nehra to Mohammad Ashraful, FOUR, width, and Ashraful is getting into the groove. Square-driven nicely along the ground and Harbhajan moved across too slowly from third man to cut it off

13.2

Nehra to Mohammad Ashraful, OUT, ah! With Ashraful, you know the brain freeze is just around the corner, and here it is. Having played watchfully all along, one boundary has brought the impetuosity back. He goes for an ill-advised hoick off a short of length ball on leg stump. It was there to be hit, yes, but that was not the right shot. It ballooned off the top edge, high over square leg, but Praveen Kumar stayed put and took a nicely judged catch near the rope

Nehra to Mushfiqur Rahim, 1 wide, slips down the leg, close to the batsman but makes no contact. Duly called.

13.4

13.5

Nehra to Mushfiqur Rahim, no run, length ball on middle and off, defended off the front foot towards the off side

India's seamers, barring Zaheer, and he too after a forgettable start, have looked very ordinary. This will not do for the World Cup. This won't even do for the Asia Cup - Pakistan and Sri Lanka looked far better.

13.6

Nehra to Mushfiqur Rahim, 1 run, short and wide outside off, a more set batsman would have hit it for a boundary, but Rahim bunts it down to third man for one

End of over 14 (7 runs) Bangladesh 84/2 (RR: 6.00)

Nehra to Imrul Kayes, 1 wide

15.2

Nehra to Imrul Kayes, OUT, Gone. Kayes perishes to a bouncer that involved some effort, but had little pace. Kayes went for the pull but was hopelessly late on the shot, it popped up for a simple catch inside the circle at midwicket

15.5

Nehra to Shakib Al Hasan, FOUR, ah, another good ball, but this time Shakib gets a healthy outside edge and it flies to the thirdman boundary. What's more, it hits the sponsors board there, making Shakib richer by $1500!

16.3

Harbhajan Singh to Shakib Al Hasan, OUT, Beauty! Harbhajan has OWNED Shakib with the perfect straighter one. It was tossed up again, Shakib got forward, but was a fraction short of the pitch of the ball. He could not smother the lack of spin, as it darted in through the bat-pad gap to knock the pegs. Class. Mushfiqur Rahim    30* (54b 1x4)      V Sehwag    1-0-4-0

32.1

Sehwag to Mushfiqur Rahim, OUT, and Viru's golden arm has not lost any of its charm! Sharp turn this time from outside off, puff of dust as it bounced off, Rahim played outside the line, got some glove on to the pads and it ballooned to the leg side. Dhoni had enough time to take the catch.

Mushfiqur Rahim c †Dhoni b Sehwag 30 (67m 55b 1x4 0x6) SR: 54.54

Divyank: "Does Sehwag not look like Wayne Rooney? similar sort of role in the team as well; a full frontal assaulter." Interesting comparison. Very similar hair styles. Suhrawadi Shuvo comes out

32.2

Suhrawadi Shuvo    1* (1b)      RA Jadeja    8-0-27-1

Rohit Sharma to bowl. Hmm...

33.1

Sharma to Suhrawadi Shuvo, no run, tossed up offie from round the sticks, bit of turn and a hint of leading edge

33.2

Sharma to Suhrawadi Shuvo, 3 runs, paddled very fine from outside leg stump and they run through for three

33.3

Sharma to Naeem Islam, 2 runs, sharp spin, darts in from outside off and it is turned away to square leg

33.4

Sharma to Naeem Islam, OUT, Given! Rohit Sharma has a wicket, but he might have been lucky. Flighted offie outside off, the batsman looks for a cover drive, and there is a definite noise, but the batsman looked unhappy. Might have been bat hitting the ground, but he has to go.

Naeem Islam c †Dhoni b Sharma 3 (14m 12b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

Rohit's bowling action has an uncanny resemblance to Mark Waugh's. Seems like Rohit is going to great lengths to get that "lazy elegance" reputation. Well, as long as he focuses on the elegance bit....

33.5

Sharma to Mashrafe Mortaza, no run, beats him with another flighted offie outside off

33.6

Sharma to Mashrafe Mortaza, no run, Mortaza gauges the turn this time and blocks it to the off side

End of over 34 (5 runs) Bangladesh 167/7 (RR: 4.91)

Suhrawadi Shuvo    4* (3b)      V Sehwag    2-0-6-1

34.1

Sehwag to Suhrawadi Shuvo, OUT, well, the pacemen are rusty, but India's army of spinners are on the money today. Straighter ball from round the sticks, rushes in past the inside edge and raps him on the back pad. Dead plumb, and that's that.

Suhrawadi Shuvo lbw b Sehwag 4 (9m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Param Sidhu: "While we are at it - Alistair Cook is a dead ringer for Kaka, Rohit Sharma can pass off as Lukas Podolski and the cherry goes to Ranatunga who looks like Maradona's twin - from neck down!"

Leg slip and silly point in!

34.2

Sehwag to Shafiul Islam, no run, not much clue about it as it turned in

34.3

Sehwag to Shafiul Islam, no run

34.4

Sehwag to Shafiul Islam, OUT, Sehwag is having a ball with the ball! Another regulation offie outside off, and Shafiul sweeps without much idea, across the line. Raps him on the pads, he is a little forward of the stumps, so umpire Doctrove thinks long and hard but eventually gives him.

Shafiul Islam lbw b Sehwag 0 (1m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Sehwag is at a bowling alley, and they are going down like nine pins. Sankesh is losing the plot, much like Bangladesh - "Doesn't Rohit Sharma look like a young Elvis?"

34.5

Sehwag to Syed Rasel, OUT, almost saw it coming. Sehwag looked as menacing as Malinga did last night, and Rasel was shivering when the genius of part-time off spin dawdled in and landed one from round the sticks on off stump. There was some flight, no spin, no pace, but he played all around it and it found its way to the furniture.

Syed Rasel b Sehwag 0 (3m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Sehwag's finished with 4 for 6. Dream figures - I remember Yuvraj once taking identical figures in an ODI, and my colleague Sid Monga says Phil Simmons bettered that with a 4 for 3, so this is joint second most menacing four-wicket haul of all time. Who'd have thought Bangladesh would implode like this after that start where they did not even need singles? Asnwer - anyone who was following their tour of England.

India looked patchy, rusty, tired, and slow. Their bowlers have a lot of work to do ahead of the next game, while the batsmen need to get 168 to give them a winning start in the Asia Cup. They should be out to bat soon, since Bangladesh's innings ended so much ahead of time.
