Asia Cup, 6th Match: Sri Lanka v India at Dambulla, Jun 22, 2010
Asia Cup - 6th match
Sri Lanka won by 7 wickets (with 75 balls remaining)
22 June 2010 - day/night match (50-over match)

Hi, there welcome to ODI no. 2999, the latest edition of India v Sri Lanka! The battle of dark blue versus darker blue has been enacted 26 times since January 2008 - and they will do this again in the finals.. And then we have another tri-series in Sri Lanka involving these two and New Zealand. This is Chinese torture of the ICC kind! As my colleague Sidharth Monga puts it, Stop this Madness!

Sangakkara has won the toss and elected to field in this dead rubber. Sri Lanka have made four changes.. Randiv, Herath, Maharoof and Kandamby come in, while Murali and Samaraweera are among those who have been rested.

India have made three changes as well, with Nehra, Harbhajan and the injured Sehwag missing out. Dhoni is happy batting first, having experienced dim-lit Dambulla twice already this series. Dinesh Karthik, Pragyan Ojha and Ashok Dinda come in.

I am Nitin Sundar, your commentator for today.

0.5

Welegedara to Karthik, no run

0.6

Welegedara to Karthik, no run, another straight one outside off, lets it go outside off

End of over 1 (3 runs) India 3/0 (RR: 3.00)

Maharoof to Gambhir, no run, back of a length from over the stumps, Gambhir stays back and defends to the off side

1.2

Maharoof to Gambhir, 1 run, plays with very soft hands this time, and dinks it to the off side for a quick single to point

1.3

Maharoof to Karthik, 1 wide, loses the radar, that one swings well wide down the leg side

1.3

Maharoof to Karthik, FOUR, very weird shot, picks four for it, he was trying to open the face and run it fine to the off side, but somehow got it to the left of Sangakkara. It runs away for four to fine leg

1.4

Maharoof to Karthik, no run, more conventional this time, gets behind the line and defends off the front foot

1.5

1.6

Maharoof to Karthik, 1 run, good variety, gets this one to jag into DK, who is falling across his stumps, but gets his bat down in time to squirt it to the leg side for one

End of over 2 (7 runs) India 10/0 (RR: 5.00)

    • KD Karthik 5 (9b 1x4)
    • G Gambhir 4 (3b)

2.2

Welegedara to Karthik, no run, jags in from outside off, from back of a length. DK defends well off the back foot

2.4

Welegedara to Karthik, no run, nice bowling, gets this one to straighten back in, but DK is up to it this time, defended to the off side

2.5

Welegedara to Karthik, no run, another sharp in-ducker, Karthik gets ready to cut and changes his mind at the last moment to defend it to the off side. Good decision

2.6

End of over 3 (1 run) India 11/0 (RR: 3.66)

    • KD Karthik 6 (15b 1x4)
    • G Gambhir 4 (3b)
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 2-0-4-0
    • MF Maharoof 1-0-7-0
3.1

Maharoof to Karthik, no run, slow and short of a length outside off, Karthik can't get any timing into the back foot cover drive

3.2

Maharoof to Karthik, FOUR, perfects the shot this time. Given the width and the lack of pace, DK had the time to rock back and unfurl the back foot cover drive, it was timed well enough to just run away from the cover fielder who chased it all the way and dived

3.3

Maharoof to Karthik, no run, similar ball, slightly closer to the batsman, who tries to drive straighter and it goes straight to mid off.

Arun: "Here is the Game of 9's. On ODI number 2999, we have something special. Some of the Indian players are playing on their *9th match today. Jadeja - 29, Praveen - 39, Rohit Sharma - 49, Gambhir - 99. Some of the SL players already have 9 in the no. of matches played. Welegedara - 9, Tharanga - 99, Sangakara -269 ,Jayawardene - 319 "

Maharoof to Karthik, no run, straightens the line with the leg-cutter slower ball on middle and leg. Karthik spots it but does not risk a slog.

Maharoof to Karthik, no run, defends to the leg side, off the back foot to end the over

End of over 4 (4 runs) India 15/0 (RR: 3.75)

    • KD Karthik 10 (21b 2x4)
    • G Gambhir 4 (3b)
    • MF Maharoof 2-0-11-0
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 2-0-4-0
4.1

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, Gambhir does the good old Mathew Hayden, walks down the pitch to negate Welegedara's spin and then defends to the off side

4.2

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, good response, Welegedara pre-empts the walk down and bangs it in shorter, Gambhir tries to cut from the crease but has no room and bottom-edges to the keeper

4.3

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, short of a length on off stump, Gambhir tries to square drive off the back foot, and finds point.

Slowish start from India.

4.4

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, another bouncer, Welegedara has no pace, operating in the mid 120s, Gambhir tries to cut it as it passes him at shoulder high but can't connect

4.5

Welegedara to Gambhir, 1 leg bye, misses out on a gift. Full and sprayed on leg stump, Gambhir misses the flick, and it runs off his pads to the leg side for just one leg bye

4.6

Welegedara to Karthik, 2 runs, Karthik trots out of his castle and works the short ball off his hips to square leg to pick a couple

End of over 5 (3 runs) India 18/0 (RR: 3.60)

    • G Gambhir 4 (8b)
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 3-0-6-0
    • MF Maharoof 2-0-11-0
5.1

Maharoof to Gambhir, FOUR, alright, Gambhir's seen enough of Maharoof, comes down the track again, in the Sourav Ganguly fashion this time, opening up the off side and going for the carved drive over point. Just high enough to elude Jayawardene's jump

5.2

Maharoof to Gambhir, no run, nice come back - he shifts to round the wicket and angles it into Gambhir, beating his defensive prod all ends up

5.3

Maharoof to Gambhir, no run, just outside off, Gambhir opens the face and defends to point

Interesting field placing - Jayawardene is standing at a short point position to check Gambhir's airy hits

5.4

Maharoof to Gambhir, 1 run, down the track again and played to mid off for a quick single

5.5

Maharoof to Karthik, no run, short of a length, Karthik pre-meditates the move down the pitch, but the ball is not there for the drive

End of over 6 (6 runs) India 24/0 (RR: 4.00)

    • KD Karthik 13 (24b 2x4)
    • G Gambhir 9 (12b 1x4)
    • MF Maharoof 3-0-17-0
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 3-0-6-0
6.1

Welegedara to Karthik, 1 run, there's no pace on offer, so Karthik is doing all the running here. He's again out of the crease, and since its not pitched up, plays it softly to mid on for one

6.2

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, sucker ball, full and wide of off stump, trying to bring Mahela at short point into play, but Gambhir defends it to him

6.3

Welegedara to Gambhir, FOUR, SMASH! Gambhir's been bothered by bouncers in the recent pace, but at Welegedara's pace, he has no problems. Pulled in the air, but well into the gap at square leg

6.4

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, on the pads again, and Gambhir can't capitalise. Misses out on the flick

6.5

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, good ball, great shot and wonderful fielding! It was the inswinger, tailing into Gambhir, who negated the movement by chipping out and flicked crisply. Suraj Randiv inside the circle at midwicket dives acrobatically to his right to save a few

6.6

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, another fullish ball outside off, Gambhir yorks himself by moving out and can't power the off drive. It dribbles straight to mid off

End of over 7 (5 runs) India 29/0 (RR: 4.14)

    • G Gambhir 13 (17b 2x4)
    • KD Karthik 14 (25b 2x4)

Change of bats for one of the batsmen... and drinks. Angelo Mathews comes into the attack

7.1

Mathews to Karthik, no run, full ball tailing into Karthik, who plays the forward defensive back to the bowler

7.2

Mathews to Karthik, 1 run, back of a length on middle and off, Karthik innovates again without earning value for his efforts and glances to square leg for one

7.3

Mathews to Gambhir, no run, short of length and angling across Gambhir who again jumps out, but can't manufacture driving length

7.4

Mathews to Gambhir, 1 run, this time he gets the width and cuts, but can't cash in as he's hit it straight to point. Fumble concedes a single

7.5

Mathews to Karthik, 1 run, angled into Karthik's pads, he quietly works it to the leg side

7.6

Mathews to Gambhir, 1 run, another fumble, Gambhir works it off his pads straight to midwicket who lets it through

End of over 8 (4 runs) India 33/0 (RR: 4.12)

    • G Gambhir 15 (20b 2x4)
    • KD Karthik 16 (28b 2x4)
    • AD Mathews 1-0-4-0

A reader called Karthik, on Karthik: "Tat's 3 times now in 6 overs that Karthik has taken a single of the last ball of a over... That the term "Over-Gaaji" comes from Chennai, needs more proof?? ;)"

8.1

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, good lengths here, nothing to drive, Gambhir deflects it off the back foot to point

8.2

Welegedara to Gambhir, 1 run, ooh, lovely inswinging yorker, caught Gambhir napping and he just about managed to squeeze his bat down on it and squit it behind square on the leg

8.3

Welegedara to Karthik, 1 run, tight single to mid off! Karthik chose the wrong man to take on, Dilshan swooped in on the ball, picked up and threw over-arm, not from very far, and Karthik dived in. The ball missed the stumps, would have been out if he'd hit.

8.4

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, tries to punch down the ground, but Mathews fields it. Not timed very well

8.5

Welegedara to Gambhir, no run, another flick, finds the fielder at short midwicket between the gaps

8.6

Welegedara to Gambhir, FOUR, cheeky and gets away with it! That was wide of off stump, but bounced big on Gambhir, who was unfazed and hung back in the crease to essay the upper cut, that flew just over the head of the lone slip, to third man

End of over 9 (6 runs) India 39/0 (RR: 4.33)

    • G Gambhir 20 (25b 3x4)
    • KD Karthik 17 (29b 2x4)
    • UWMBCA Welegedara 5-0-17-0
    • AD Mathews 1-0-4-0
9.1

Mathews to Karthik, no run, Karthik continues in his soporific ways, plays straight to mid on

9.2

Mathews to Karthik, 3 runs, finally we know Karthik's plan. He plays it softer this time to mid on and runs a quick single, the fielder shies at the stumps and hits. But it deflects away to the leg side and Karthik steals some overthrows. Sly

More drinks for the openers. Hope they get more run-thirsty.

9.3

Mathews to Gambhir, 1 run, opens the face outside off and deflects to third man for a single

Gambhir has meanwhile completed 1000 runs against SL. Not even close to so many against any other team.. can't blame him - he keeps playing them day in and day out.

9.4

Mathews to Karthik, no run, Karthik chips out and tries to work the ball from outside off to the leg side. No timing, straight to mid on

9.5

Mathews to Karthik, no run, this one keeps low outside off, Karthik tries to cut but is beaten by the lack of bounce

9.6

Mathews to Karthik, FOUR, No problemo this time as Karthik finishes the tenth over with his shot of the day so far. Short and wide enough outside off for the rasping cut, but he had to bisect point in the circle and a not so fine third-man. He did that with surgical precision.

End of over 10 (8 runs) India 47/0 (RR: 4.70)

    • KD Karthik 24 (34b 3x4)
    • G Gambhir 21 (26b 3x4)

Maharoof has changed ends. and Sri Lanka take the bowling Powerplay.

10.1

Maharoof to Gambhir, no run, ooh, good old-fashioned lemon-cut or as Geoffrey Boycott calls it, French cut or Chinese cut, but it eludes leg stump and Sangakkara tidies up.

10.2

Maharoof to Gambhir, 1 run, angles in from well wide of the crease, Gambhir plays it away with the angle off his pads square on the leg side

10.3

Maharoof to Karthik, FOUR, gift.. Leg cutter goes awry and ends up on Karthik's hips on leg stump, he glances it along to fine leg

10.4

Maharoof to Karthik, FOUR, whoa! Karthik surprises every with a hat-trick of boundaries. Not much timing on this off drive, but straight enough to beat the dive of a very wide mid off.

10.5

Maharoof to Karthik, 1 run, this time, he drives crisply down the ground to the leg side for one more.

10.6

Maharoof to Gambhir, 1 run, another one angled into Gambhir from wide of the crease, nudged to the leg side for one. It's Gambhir's turn to pull an over gaaji.

End of over 11 (11 runs) India 58/0 (RR: 5.27)

    • G Gambhir 23 (29b 3x4)

Sanga stands up to the crease to check Gambhir's strolls out of the crease.

11.1

Mathews to Gambhir, no run, full on off, driven back to the bowler

11.2

Mathews to Gambhir, OUT, Suraj Randiv take a bow! Catch of the tournament! He did this once before, diving to his right to save a boundary, but this time he's stopped Gambhir's innings. That was short and asking for punishment, Gambhir obliged by opening up his stance and whack-pulling it with ferocity well to the right of Randiv at short midwicket... but in the air. Randiv dived across full length and itercepted it mid-air, fully horizontal to pluck it one-handed. Classy.

G Gambhir c Randiv b Mathews 23 (52m 31b 3x4 0x6) SR: 74.19

11.3

Mathews to Kohli, 3 runs, Kohli gets going with a nice piece of timing, flicked pleasingly to midwicket

11.4

Mathews to Karthik, no run, dangerous from Karthik, looking for a dangerous nudge without any room outside off, bottom-edged perilously close to the stumps

11.5

Mathews to Karthik, FOUR, top shot. Sprayed down to leg, but Karthik had to play it fine enough to elude fine leg. He did just that, glancing it nicely

11.6

Mathews to Karthik, 1 run, well outside off this time, and Karthik opens the face to pick a single down to third man

End of over 12 (8 runs) India 66/1 (RR: 5.50)

    • KD Karthik 38 (40b 6x4)
    • V Kohli 3 (1b)
    • AD Mathews 3-0-20-1
    • MF Maharoof 4-0-28-0
12.1

Maharoof to Karthik, 1 run, slow and wide outside off, angled easily down to third man again

As many have pointed out, Karthik is now in his nervous 30s.

12.4

Maharoof to Kohli, 1 run, nicely driven this time, again leaning into the cover drive into the outfield

12.5

Maharoof to Karthik, 1 run, again short outside off and again Karthik eases it off the face to third man. Already feels like he's done it a 1000 times today.

12.6

Maharoof to Kohli, 1 run, on Kohli's pads, leans into it and flicks to square leg

End of over 13 (4 runs) India 70/1 (RR: 5.38)

    • KD Karthik 40 (42b 6x4)
    • MF Maharoof 5-0-32-0

14.2

Maharoof to Kohli, no run, slightly wider of off stump and short, Kohli resists the temptation to cut or upper-cut and lets it go

14.3

Maharoof to Kohli, OUT, he's a goner this time! Maharoof keeps it outside off, moved away ever so slightly from off stump and it was enough to fox Kohli, and get the edge as he prodded unconvincingly off the back foot. Sangakkara leaps in joy after pouching it, and that's another failure for Kohli in the Asia Cup.

Herath to Karthik, OUT, whoa! Billy Bowden sets a record for a late decision, that would have made Steve Bucknor proud! Superb bowling from Herath, spin and bounce from middle, ripping across Karthik. Did it take the edge on the way to Sangakkara? Sri Lanka thought so, and around 10 seconds later, so did Billy who raised the crooked finger. Karthik goes in the 40s again.

Sitashu notices a trend in the India-SL glut. "I am an Indian supporter, but am hoping that India lose this match. Looking at the past couple of years, whenever India reaches the final, the result of the final is always the opposite the result between the two teams in the group stage. Asia Cup - 2008, Compaq cup - 2009, Kitply Cup - 2008, Tri Nation in Dhaka - 2010.

Hope India loses today and this trend continues!"

40.4

40.5

40.6

Maharoof to Dinda, OUT, and Maharoof has another one! Superb yorker, tailing in on leg stump and Dinda plays a questionable swipe off the back foot instead of guarding his castle.. He misses, Maharoof hits and India are nine down! Maharoof has a five-for!

Four out of Rohit's six fifty-plus scores in ODIs have been in defeats. Closing in on 5 out of 7 today... hmm.

42.1

Welegedara to Sharma, FOUR, the kind of shot that will make Sehwag proud! Full and wide outside off, Rohit did away with the nitty gritty of footwork, and whacked it with good timing over the infield in the off side

42.2

Welegedara to Sharma, FOUR, length ball on Rohit's pads and he flicks it over midwicket this time for four more

42.3

Welegedara to Sharma, 1 run, OUT, all over. Rohit is run out trying to keep strike. Full and wide outside off, but this time he does not middle the lofted square drive.. It dribbles down to third man, and Rohit runs back desperate to keep strike. Razor-sharp throw from Mahela, I reckon - Sanga had little to do, as Rohit jumped inside in an attempt to make his crease.. but the bails were already off. India have collapsed in bizarre fashion here.

RG Sharma run out 69 (118m 73b 7x4 0x6) SR: 94.52

Maharoof is the star of the show.. 5 for 42 in his ten overs. Great scenes here, Percy Abeysekara is in the field, congratulating the comeback man. The dressing room stands as one and applauds.. the motley crowd get behind their man as well..!

Unusual innings that all-round.. India started slowly but without facing much discomfort. Suddenly wickets went down in a clutch, before Dhoni and Rohit out together a clever stand.. A run out sent Dhoni back, and before you could say 'Collapse' India have crumbled in a hurry. 6 for 20 in five overs is not so much choking as just dropping dead due to a sudden dearth in oxygen supply.

Keeping with Shitanshu's trend-analysis - If I remember right, Angelo Mathews for a six-for in the dead rubber in the Compaq Cup which India lost, before beating the hosts in the final. Another allrounder has got a five-for for Sri Lanka today, and they are favourites to win this dead rubber.

Vipin has more trends for us: "Jadeja crossed 25 runs marks 8 times . and India lost all of those.. today he got out on duck ,so India should win today."
