Asia Cup - Final

India v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 100 runs

Hello and a warm welcome to the Asia Cup final: Sri Lanka v India.

Pitch Batting wicket, say the experts. If any thing, Rameez Raja believes, it's not as bone dry as some of the other tracks. Marvan Atapattu reckons he would bat first: "It's the final and the wickets have tend to get slower." Ian Chappell too agrees with that sentiment. "India should go with two front line spinners - Ojha and Piyush."

Toss Dhoni calls heads correctly and he will bowl. "We want to put pressure of setting a target on Sri Lanka. I don't think any team is sure of what target to set. Our strength is batting.

Mahela: "We wanted to bat on this pitch and let our slow bowlers get into them later. We got back Vaas and Mendis. The rest stay the same. We just want to enjoy the final."

India are playing Robin Uthappa in place of Praveen Kumar. The bowling is Ishant, RP singh, Ojha and Irfan. So Sehwag and Yuvraj will share the fifth bowler's duty.

Ian Chappell says Indian strategy of piling their team with so much batsmen is a gamble. " I like the team balance of Sri Lanka as opposed to India."

S Rajesh, Cricinfo's stats editor, reckons Sri Lanka has the advantage. Excerpts from his preview : "With both teams in such exceptional batting touch, the difference in the final could be a bowling spell or some inspiration in the field. Nine matches have already been played on the same square at the National Stadium, suggesting that spinners might have something to look forward to. Sri Lanka have the clear advantage in that department, with Muttiah Muralitharan and the exciting Ajantha Mendis leading the way."

I am eagerly looking forward to see how Ajantha Mendis bowls against the Indians. He flicks some of his deliveries. Finger-flicking good, as some one said. The delivery has been coined the term 'Carrom Ball' by Sri Lankan cricket enthusiast Mahendra Mapagunaratne living in Toronto because Mendis flicks his finger as would a carrom player flick the striker on a carrom board.

In his stats preview , Matthew Varghese writes, "For Sri Lanka, their two veteran bowlers and Mendis have maintained an economy-rate of less than four: the average for the tournament has been 5.54. If they can do so on Sunday, India's free-scoring batsmen - at least so far in the tournament - will be forced to take a few risks. Mendis has managed to strike almost every three overs, and Murali once in four, and India could be under pressure in the middle overs of their innings."

You can watch how Ajantha Mendis bowled in the last few games plus see some of the highlights of the tournament and how India and Sri Lanka reached the finals on Cricinfo TV.

Sidharth Monga, our man in Karachi, says not much crowd yet. "With President Musharraf expected to attend the game later, the security is heightened... and it took us half an hour to get through security checks. I think normal crowd wouldn't be even allowed to carry mobile phones."

Yuvraj Singh: "It's a good batting wicket. I have scored lots of runs in Karachi. It's a lucky venue. We have plans against Mendis and Muralitharan. Let's hope it works out. I have been practicing reverse sweeping but I am not completely confident with that yet [to produce it in match time]."

Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara walk out to the middle. RP Singh to bowl. Here we go. Asia Cup 2008 final about to start.

0.5

Singh to Sangakkara, no run, shifts his line to outside off, full in length and Sangakkara pushes it to point. He walks towards square leg, does a few stretches and is ready now

0.6

Singh to Sangakkara, no run, confident stride out and he square drives to point. No swing or any movement off the pitch so far.

I am Sriram Veera, your commentator for the final, and Binoy George is on the scoring duty.

Ishant Sharma to share the new ball. Two slips in place.

1.1

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, He hits the length just outside off and straightens it, Jayasuriya is cramped and pushes uncertainly outside the line of the ball.

1.2

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, takes this one away and Jayasuriya lets it go. He then bangs his bat on the ground, taps the guard again , adjusts his pads

1.3

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, in the zone outside off, again slanting away, left alone by Jayasuriya.

1.4

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, OUT, Suresh Raina has run out Sangakkara. It was pushed towards short mid-off region and Sangakkara set off for the run. Jayasuriya yells at him to get back. Too late. Sanga is already half-way down and Raina swooped on the ball and under-armed a direct hit. Jayasuriya had taken couple of steps after he had played the shot and Sangakkara responded and kept running. Enter the captain Mahela.

KC Sangakkara run out 4 (6m 3b 1x4 0x6) SR: 133.33

2.4

Singh to Jayawardene, no run, short in length, moving away from Mahela who punches it to left of Rohit Sharma at point.

2.5

Singh to Jayawardene, 1 run, on a length, angling away from Mahela who opens the bat-face at the last minute and runs it down to third man.

The bails are blown off by the strong breeze. Robin Uthappa, fielding at a very short fine leg position, rushes in to put them back.

2.6

Singh to Jayasuriya, no run, On a length, on the middle, nudged to the on side.

Ranjit: "I seriously do not see the point of playing an extra batsman, especially given the fact that Pathan can be quite handy with the bat. As it is our strike bowlers haven't been performing to their potential. India are going to pay heavily for this."

End of over 3 (1 run) Sri Lanka 12/1 (RR: 4.00)
ST Jayasuriya    7* (10b 1x4)      RP Singh    2-0-12-0

Two slips, standing well apart from each other, in for Mahela

Now there is just one slip. A short extra cover moves in.

I Sharma to Jayawardene, 1 run, back of length outside off, cut down to third man. Ishant is not happy with himself and annoyed at the width offered.

3.6

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, FOUR, The Jayasuriya shot. Out comes the front foot and he lifts a full delivery outside off over point. The bottom-hand working over time there.

End of over 4 (11 runs) Sri Lanka 23/1 (RR: 5.75)
ST Jayasuriya    11* (11b 2x4)      I Sharma    2-1-11-0

4.6

Singh to Jayawardene, no run, Rohit makes a fine stop at point to prevent a certain boundary. A tad wide outside off and Mahela cut it hard but Rohit dived to his right to make the stop. So far the ground fielding has been sharp.

End of over 5 (maiden) Sri Lanka 23/1 (RR: 4.60)
DPMD Jayawardene    8* (16b 1x4)      RP Singh    3-1-12-0
ST Jayasuriya    11* (11b 2x4)      I Sharma    2-1-11-0

5.1

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, full in length, lands it outside the off stump and Jayasuriya leans into the drive and pushes it to mid-off

5.2

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, a tad slower, around 130kmph, around the off stump, pushed to covers

5.3

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, hits the deck short of length, 139 kmph, on the middle and leg, and Jayasuriya went for his short-arm pull but failed to connect. It hit him on the thigh pad.

5.4

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, The slower one. 109.2 kmph. Full and on the middle and off, Jayasuriya adjusts to defend down the track.

5.5

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, another fine stop by Rohit at point. Jayasuriya had slashed a back-of-length delivery well to the right of Rohit dives and dives well. Ishant applauds the effort.

5.6

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, 1 run, fuller and wider and Jayasuriya drives hard to left of covers this time where Raina dives to make a half-stop. The ball rolls behind him and Jayasuriya retains the strike. This should get interesting now. Jayasuriya v RP, who has been angling every thing away from Mahela. What will he do now?

End of over 6 (1 run) Sri Lanka 24/1 (RR: 4.00)
ST Jayasuriya    12* (17b 2x4)      I Sharma    3-1-12-0
DPMD Jayawardene    8* (16b 1x4)      RP Singh    3-1-12-0

6.1

Singh to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, We have the answer. Jayasuriya charged down the track and crashes a back-of-length delivery on the stumps to wide third man

6.2

Singh to Jayasuriya, FOUR, Off he goes again. He likes RP. Short in length and coming into Jayasuriya who stays still at his original position and short-arm pulls it to deep backward square leg boundary. Ojha threw in a dive but couldn't stop the ball.

6.3

Singh to Jayasuriya, 1 run, shifts his line to outside, again coming in off short of length, cut hard to third man where Ishant fumbles a touch but recovers quickly

6.4

Singh to Jayawardene, 1 run, RP slips back to his angling deliveries to the right-handed Mahela who moves close to the line and wrists it to the on side for a quick single

Wide slip and short extra cover in place

6.5

Singh to Jayasuriya, no run, length delivery around the off stump and Jayasuriya doesn't get the room to carve, neither does he get the length to drive and defends down the track

6.6

Singh to Jayasuriya, no run, So he decides to create his own room. He moves outside leg as he charges out, RP hurls it short and bangs it down hard and the extra bounce has Jayasuriya mistiming the cut to covers.

End of over 7 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 32/1 (RR: 4.57)
ST Jayasuriya    19* (22b 3x4)      RP Singh    4-1-20-0
DPMD Jayawardene    9* (17b 1x4)      I Sharma    3-1-12-0

7.1

I Sharma to Jayawardene, 2 runs, Full in length and just outside off, Mahela stays back and plays a lofted shot to wide mid-off region. He didn't quite middle it but manages to clear the circle.

7.2

I Sharma to Jayawardene, OUT, Caught by Rohit. Sri Lanka are in a wobble here. Short and climbing outside off, Mahela didn't quite get the room he wanted, still went with the cut but couldn't clear point where Rohit Sharma took a easy catch to his left. No timing and hence no pace off the bat. Ishant had got it to straighten and got a bit of bounce as well. India are running hot here. Can Jayasuriya turn it around for Sri Lanka?

DPMD Jayawardene c RG Sharma b I Sharma 11 (25m 19b 1x4 0x6) SR: 57.89

7.3

I Sharma to Kapugedera, 1 run, full and on the middle and leg, Kapugedera flicks it in the air towards long leg for a single.

Yamish: "Since a regular bowler is giving away as much runs as a part-timer in these flat pitches. I think it was a brilliant idea to pack in an extra batsmen to see off the threat posed by Murali and Mendis."

7.4

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, on a length, just outside off stump, pushed to covers. Jayasuriya does his routine: Taps his bat vigourously on the turf, adjusts both pads, checks whether his family jewels are safely guarded, adjusts his helmet and gets ready

7.5

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, leans forward to defend a length delivery on the off stump. Ishant has bowled very well today.

7.6

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, slips in a 106.6 kmph slower one on the middle and leg, tapped to the on side. He lets out a grunt when he bowls the slower one. Well at least on the two occasions today.

End of over 8 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 35/2 (RR: 4.37)
ST Jayasuriya    19* (25b 3x4)      I Sharma    4-1-15-1
CK Kapugedera    1* (1b)      RP Singh    4-1-20-0

8.1

Singh to Kapugedera, no run, full in length, angling away - RP has struck to that repeatedly to the right-handed batsmen and it has worked - guided to point.

8.2

Singh to Kapugedera, FOUR, back of length and outside off and that length allows Kapu to stand tall and punch it through covers. Fast outfield.

8.3

Singh to Kapugedera, no run, back to the good length, straighter, defended to the on side

8.4

Singh to Kapugedera, no run, full in length and slanted across Kapu who pushes to Uthappa at short square point. Now we have two men close on the off side. Short square point and short extra cover

8.5

8.6

Singh to Kapugedera, no run, back to the regular programming - Full length delivery moving away from the off stump, defended to the off side

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, further up this time, back of length and cutting away from Jayasuriya - not much room on offer and dabbed to point

9.3

9.4

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, FOUR, another short-of-length delivery, around 128 kmph, and a tad wide outside off and Jayasuriya frees his arms. And it flies off the outer edge over the slip

9.5

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, 1 run, Around 135 kmph delivery, moving away from Jayasuriya who brings the fifty up for his team with a dab to third man

One wide slip in.

9.6

I Sharma to Kapugedera, no run, 140 kmph length delivery that straightens outside off, squeezed off the outer edge to point

End of over 10 (11 runs) Sri Lanka 50/2 (RR: 5.00)
CK Kapugedera    5* (8b 1x4)      I Sharma    5-1-26-1

Irfan replaces RP. No slips for Jayasuriya.

10.1

Pathan to Jayasuriya, FOUR, 125.3 kmph gentle seam-up delivery outside off and Jayasuriya blasts it off the back foot through covers.

10.2

Pathan to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, a 99.02 kmph slower one and Jayasuriya dashes down the track and is a touch early into his lofted shot but clears the covers. Sehwag ran back but couldn't reach it.

10.3

Pathan to Jayasuriya, 4 leg byes, 113.02 kmph drifts down leg and Jayasuriya tickles it to fine-leg boundary. Ten runs from the first three balls. Jayasuriya is going after Pathan.

10.4

Pathan to Jayasuriya, FOUR, And again. Yummy little short-arm cut over point. Typical Jayasuriya. Great to watch. A tad short in length and outside off, Jayasuriya went back to carve it up and over

10.5

Pathan to Jayasuriya, no run, 127 kmph delivery and outside off, cut hard but straight to point. A deep point is in place now

10.6

Pathan to Jayasuriya, 1 run, 114.6 kmph delivery off the scrambled seam, outside off and Jaya retains the strike with a dab to Ishant at third man

End of over 11 (15 runs) Sri Lanka 65/2 (RR: 5.90)
ST Jayasuriya    41* (36b 6x4 1x6)      IK Pathan    1-0-11-0
CK Kapugedera    5* (8b 1x4)      I Sharma    5-1-26-1

11.1

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, 1 run, pushed to mid-off for a single

Nikhil Vaishnavi: "I dont see any sense in packing 7 batsmen in the line up. If the bowlers are getting hit for runs, then even the top 4 finish the job and the 5th batsman is required to clean up what's left. How many times in the past have we seen the entire team collapse even if there were 7 batsmen." Any Sri Lankans watching the game?! Fire away folks.

11.2

I Sharma to Kapugedera, no run, probing delivery outside off stump, It landed on a length outside off and straightened and that beat Kapu, who pushed inside the line, expecting it to cut back in.

One slip in for Kapugedera

11.3

I Sharma to Kapugedera, no run, this one shapes in towards off, defended to the off side

11.4

I Sharma to Kapugedera, OUT, Ishant strikes again for India. Jayasuriya's partners keep deserting him. Again done in by that straightening and some extra bounce. It was on the off and middle line, Kapugedera thought it would come in more than it did, tried to turn it to the on side but got the leading edge and a simple catch to point.

11.5

I Sharma to Silva, no run, rushing through the channel outside off, again holding its line, left alone

11.6

I Sharma to Silva, OUT, Would you believe it? Ishant has taken out another Sri Lankan. Kirsten pumps his fist at the pavilion. It landed on a length, kicked up even as it straightened outside off and Chamara Silva stabbed it off the inner edge on to the stumps. Again those two variables - straightening and extra bounce - does the trick for the teenager. Can Dilshan stay on with Jayasuriya.

I Sharma to Dilshan, 1 run, full and on the middle and leg, turned to long leg

13.3

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, SIX, Jayasuriya is taking on the young Ishant. No nervous poking around for him. Short in length and on the off stump line and he unfurls his short-arm pull and the white ball flies over deep square leg boundary. 50 up for this wonderful batsman.

13.4

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, shout for a caught-behind decision. Taufel turns it down. Another short-of-length delivery, this time skidding around the off stump and Jayasuriya misses his pull and it brushes the back thigh en route to Dhoni

Harsha Dayarathne from Sri Lanka: "I think the Indians have done the right thing by having more batsmen in the team. (Specially after they were planning to chase). Sri Lanka too have done their homework by having five bowlers, as India have an awesome batting line up.(Though I am not quite sure about the logic of bringing in Kulasekera for Dilhara)"

14.1

Pathan to Jayasuriya, FOUR, Full and well outside the off stump, Jayasuriya kills it over covers. Waqar Younis is in awe:" I can't figure out what is he made off"!

14.2

Pathan to Jayasuriya, no run, mistimes a cut to point. He then fiddles around with his chain

14.3

Pathan to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, dropped by RP at mid-on as he misjudged it completely. Jayasuriya messed up his pull shot and skied it over mid-on. RP ran back and couldn't figure where the ball is going to land and what's more slipped. He then recovered and threw in a lunging dive but too late.

14.4

Pathan to Jayasuriya, no run

14.5

Pathan to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, 124.7 kmph fullish delivery on the legs, flicked past square leg for couple of runs

14.6

Pathan to Jayasuriya, 1 run, 125 kmph, short and wide, cut hard but straight to deep cover point fielder.

Drinks break. Meanwhile the debate refuses to die Money: "Gautam Gambhir- 253 Runs, Virender Sehwag- 288 Runs, Suresh Raina- 356 Runs, MS Dhoni- 278 Runs And Yuvraj and Rohit also in superb form. Not a single bowler in top 6 wicket takers list. Considering the above stats, If the Indian think tank (can't blame it on dhoni alone) still think that they had done the right thing by going in with only four regular bowlers (even when irfan is struggling big time), they surely need some rethinking to do. Moreover having more than 8 scores of 300+ in the tournament so far on the same pitch, the strategy should have been to strengthen the bowling department. India has got the strategy wrong big time."

Singh to Jayasuriya, SIX, Wallop. Massive hit over long-on. He thrust his front foot out and swung a full delivery over the boundary.

15.2

Singh to Jayasuriya, SIX, They have spiked his drinks I tell you. Not that he needs any thing to make him hit more. This time he goes over long-off. Another imperious thrust of the front foot and a clean swing of the blade. Up up and over

15.3

Singh to Jayasuriya, FOUR, Gallops to 77 with a carve over covers. After serving two full pitched deliveries, RP hit the short of length. No luck. Try something else.

15.4

Singh to Jayasuriya, FOUR, Carnage continues. RP hurls it short and wide - why, you have to ask him - and Jayasuriya murders it over extra cover. Super batting this. Great entertainment.

15.5

Singh to Jayasuriya, no run, Oh swing and a miss. Again it was in the slot. Width offered outside off and Jaya wanted to loft it over covers

The top-order of Sri Lanka crumbled against Ishant and the pressure of the final. Unexpected. Jayasuriya counter attacked in a fury. Expected. Partnership over hundred with Dilshan. Interesting. The slow down after that. Understandable. Jayasuriya fell at the wrong time, Dilshan too was dismissed and Sri Lanka coudn't find the final flourish. So 274 to chase down. At toss, Dhoni would have said yes he would take that. Now the battle is going to between the Sri Lanka spinners - Murali and Mendis - plus the crafty Vaas, against the Indian line-up packed with batsmen. Who will triumph? Join us in a short while for the run chase. Remember, the folks living in USA, can catch it live on ESPN360.
