Ryobi One-Day Cup - Final

Victoria v Tasmania

Victoria won by 84 runs (D/L method)

Hi and welcome to Cricinfo's live ball-by-ball coverage of the Ryobi One Day Cupe Final between Victoria and Tasmania here at the MCG. The covers are on, but I think most of the rain has passed, judging by the radar image. We're still hopeful of a start quite soon.

Victoria have the unbelievable record of having lost the past four one-day cup finals. It's a re-match of last year's final, which the Tasmania Tigers won. For those who aren't aware, this is the first season the one day competition has used a split innings format. The innings is split into two blocks of 20 and 25 overs respectively.

12.10pm - an update from the umpires, we've got a delay of half an hour, so we'll get underway at 12.45pm local time. Match State: Delay - Wet Ground

Toss - Tasmania have won the toss and captain George Bailey has elected to field first, obviously confident the pitch will offer a bit in the early overs because of the moisture that has been about the place.

Team News - Victoria have made two big changes, welcoming back Australian representatives Andrew McDonald and Peter Siddle to replace Ryan Carters and Jon Holland. The Tigers go in unchanged from their last match, a loss to WA in Bunbury.

The Pitch - A little bit more grass on the deck than usual and obviously a little bit of moisture given the rain this morning. It will suit the seamers early, but should still be a very good batting deck.

Match Conditions - The match has been reduced to 42 overs per side because of the delayed start. Stage 1 will be 20 overs and Stage 2 will be 22 overs. Bowlers can now bowl a maximum of 11 overs but the Powerplays remain unchanged.

12.40pm - The players and umpires are on the field lining up for the Australian National Anthem. We're just having a moment of silence for the victims of the Christchurch earthquake.

Wade not sure which way these are going from Hilfenhaus, great stuff from the big quick.

0.6

Hilfenhaus to Wade, no run, and again, on a length and nipping away to beat the outside edge

Brilliant start there from Hilfenhaus. These conditions early suit him perfectly. Movement off the deck and cloud cover mean he's able to move the ball both ways, through the air and off the deck

End of over 1 (maiden) Victoria 0/0
MS Wade    0* (6b)      BW Hilfenhaus    1-1-0-0
AJ Finch    0* (0b)

3.1

Butterworth to Finch, 1 run, back of a length, guided to third man

3.2

Butterworth to Wade, OUT, full on middle, tries to turn it to mid wicket, might have held up off the deck a bit and he gets a leading edge straight back to the bowler who takes an easy catch

MS Wade c & b Butterworth 3 (13b 0x4 0x6) SR: 23.07

Big breakthrough there, Wade is the second highest runscorer in the competition. The only downnside for the Tigers is that the leading runscorer in the competition is coming in - Brad Hodge.

1pm - The umpires have called the players off the pitch, the drizzle just began to get a little bit too heavy. I'll keep you posted about a return

The radar doesn't suggest there is too much rain about, but obviously enough for there to be a slight delay. This shouldn't last too long.

Butterworth to Hodge, no run, full outside off, steps forward and defends confidently

3.5

Butterworth to Finch, no run, length on off, defended from the crease

Hilfenhaus to Hodge, no run, full on off, defended to point on the front foot

When Hodge starts hitting balls in the middle like this, it's very worrying for the opposition. His record of turning 50s into 100s is quite amazing. The Tigers will want him soon here.

Doherty to McDonald, no run, drives back to the bowler who fields well

27.4

Doherty to McDonald, 1 run, full outside off, driven through cover

27.5

Doherty to Gulbis, no run, big shout for LBW, straightening down the line, just sliding down leg

27.6

Doherty to Gulbis, no run, big shout again, this time on off, just a bit of an inside edge, would have been out had there not been bat involved

End of over 28 (3 runs) Victoria 145/5
EP Gulbis    1* (3b)      XJ Doherty    7-0-27-0
AB McDonald    15* (23b)      BG Drew    6-0-27-3

28.1

Drew to McDonald, FOUR, back of a length on middle, pulled to deep backward square leg in the air, just wide of the man on the rope

28.2

Drew to McDonald, 2 runs, back of a length on off, backs away and gets a big top edge to long off, lands just safely

This is bizarre from McDonald, swinging like a rusty gate when you'd think they'd need to consolidate. Obviously confident Maxwell can come in and repeate his fastest ever 50. Good attacking cricket anyway.

28.3

Drew to McDonald, no run, short of a length outside off, pulls out of the shot as he realises he's backed away too far

28.4

Drew to McDonald, no run, full toss slower ball, flicked to mid wicket

28.5

Drew to McDonald, 1 run, length on off, driven to long on

28.6

Drew to Gulbis, 1 wide, short and wide outside off, that was probably wide on two counts

28.6

Drew to Gulbis, 1 run, outside edge through gully

End of over 29 (9 runs) Victoria 154/5
EP Gulbis    2* (4b)      BG Drew    7-0-36-3

29.1

Doherty to Gulbis, 2 runs, driven through point

29.2

Doherty to Gulbis, FOUR, full toss gets smashed over mid wicket

29.3

Doherty to Gulbis, FOUR, short of a length this time, rocks back and pulls over mid wicket, money for jam that

29.4

Doherty to Gulbis, no run, guides to short third man

29.5

Doherty to Gulbis, no run, cut to point from off stump

29.6

Doherty to Gulbis, 2 runs, half shout for LBW but the bottom edge from the sweep shot somehow goes through the first slip region

End of over 30 (12 runs) Victoria 166/5
EP Gulbis    14* (10b 2x4)      XJ Doherty    8-0-39-0

30.2

Faulkner to McDonald, 1 run, cuts through point

30.3

Faulkner to Gulbis, 1 run, pulled to fine leg

30.4

Faulkner to McDonald, no run, slower ball bouncer, misses out on the pull shot

30.5

Faulkner to McDonald, 1 run, flicked through mid wicket

30.6

End of over 31 (3 runs) Victoria 169/5

31.1

Hilfenhaus to McDonald, OUT, full outside off, backs away and smashes it out to deep point where Drew takes an easy catch

AB McDonald c Drew b Hilfenhaus 24 (33b 1x4 0x6) SR: 72.72

31.2

Hilfenhaus to Gulbis, OUT, back of a length, rises sharply and catches the gloves and through to the keeper who takes an athletic catch

EP Gulbis c †Triffitt b Hilfenhaus 15 (13b 2x4 0x6) SR: 115.38

Hilfenhaus on a hat-trick now, Pattinson to face...

31.3

Hilfenhaus to Pattinson, no run, back of a length on leg, tries to work it around the corner but mistimes it short of backward square leg

31.4

Hilfenhaus to Pattinson, no run, short of a length, ducks out of the way

31.5

Hilfenhaus to Pattinson, no run, back of a length, rises sharply again, leading edge straight up in the air, point can't quite get there as it pops high

The umpires call the over after just five balls. After some consultation with the third man, they call Hilfenhaus back from the boundary to ball one more delivery. In the meantime, Pattinson is getting some attention to his left finger after that last ball from Hilfenhaus

31.6

Hilfenhaus to Pattinson, no run, short again, rocks back and mistimes the pull shot in the air just between the bowler and short mid wicket, very lucky

After all that, Hilfenhaus bowls a brilliant double-wicket maiden!

End of over 32 (wicket maiden) Victoria 169/7

32.1

Faulkner to Maxwell, no run, pushed to mid wicket

32.2

Faulkner to Maxwell, 1 run, rocks back and pulls to square leg

Last time Maxwell faced the Tigers, he recorded the fastest ever 50 in Australian ODD cricket, off just 19 balls. The Vics would love that right now...

32.3

Faulkner to Pattinson, OUT, short on leg, tries to work it around the corner, top edge off the gloves and Triffit makes great ground to take a catch at full stretch

JL Pattinson c †Triffitt b Faulkner 0 (5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

The wheels are falling off here for the Vics, they've lost 3/0 and have put the Tigers right back in this match

32.4

Faulkner to Siddle, 1 run, short on leg, doesn't get over the top of the pull shot, landing short of fine leg

32.5

Faulkner to Maxwell, 2 runs, dropped, oh what a miss that is for the Tigers, big top edge pull shot down to deep square leg where Drew drops what he certainly should have taken, appeared to be slightly put off by how close he was to the rope

32.6

Faulkner to Maxwell, 1 run, guided to third man

What a big error that is by Drew. He's taken three wickets with the ball, but putting down the danger man Maxwell could prove vital in this match

End of over 33 (5 runs) Victoria 174/8
GJ Maxwell    4* (4b)      JP Faulkner    4-0-15-2
PM Siddle    1* (1b)      BW Hilfenhaus    8-2-43-2

33.1

Hilfenhaus to Maxwell, 1 run, guided to third man

33.2

Hilfenhaus to Siddle, no run, angled in at leg, big shout for LBW but going down leg, mix-up between the wickets and Cowan decides to run the ball in rather than throw it and misses out on a run out, bizarre!

33.3

Hilfenhaus to Siddle, 1 run, full toss on leg, flicked to fine leg

33.4

Hilfenhaus to Maxwell, no run, bouncer, ducked under

33.5

Hilfenhaus to Maxwell, no run, great yorker, does well to keep it out

33.6

Hilfenhaus to Maxwell, 5 wides, bouncer takes off and goes over the keeper's head, big let-off there for the Vics, undoing the pressure the Tigers had built up

33.6

Hilfenhaus to Maxwell, no run, full and driven to point

End of over 34 (7 runs) Victoria 181/8
GJ Maxwell    5* (8b)      BW Hilfenhaus    9-2-50-2
PM Siddle    2* (3b)      JP Faulkner    4-0-15-2

34.1

Faulkner to Siddle, 1 run, pushed to square leg

34.2

Faulkner to Maxwell, FOUR, full on off, swings hard trying to put it over mid wicket, big edge down to fine leg, beating short fine leg

34.3

Faulkner to Maxwell, no run, full outside off, swings hard trying to go over cover, but can't connect

34.4

Faulkner to Maxwell, OUT, huge wicket, the dangerous Maxwell goes after he gets a thick edge driving at a full ball outside off

GJ Maxwell c †Triffitt b Faulkner 9 (11b 1x4 0x6) SR: 81.81

If the Tigers can get this final wicket quickly, they'll give themselves a shot at chasing this total down...game on.

34.5

Faulkner to Cleary, no run, good bouncer at the throat, ducks under it

34.6

Faulkner to Cleary, no run, and again, the bouncer and he ducks under it

Ben Hilfenhaus to bowl his final over...

End of over 35 (5 runs) Victoria 186/9
MF Cleary    0* (2b)      JP Faulkner    5-0-20-3
PM Siddle    3* (4b)      BW Hilfenhaus    9-2-50-2

35.1

Hilfenhaus to Siddle, no run, back of a length, backs away and tries to cut, can't connect

Not sure that's the way to play, think they need to work ones and twos and get this total to 200 rather than swinging wildly

35.2

Hilfenhaus to Siddle, 1 run, worked to square leg, that's smarter cricket for the Vics.

35.3

Hilfenhaus to Cleary, 1 bye, bouncer, ducks under it and then decides to cut it over the top, can't connect but Triffit misfields and allows a bye

35.4

Hilfenhaus to Siddle, 1 run, back of a length, backs away and cuts in the air but short of cover

35.5

Hilfenhaus to Cleary, 1 run, full and an inside edge into the pads, they scurry through

35.6

Hilfenhaus to Siddle, FOUR, short on off, too predictable in the end, Siddle steps across and helps it wide of the keeper with a clever pull shot

End of over 36 (8 runs) Victoria 194/9
PM Siddle    9* (8b 1x4)      BW Hilfenhaus    10-2-57-2

Faulkner to Cleary, no run, full outside off, tries to drive but can't connect

36.2

Faulkner to Cleary, no run, fullish outside off, beats the edge as he tries to drive

36.3

Faulkner to Cleary, no run, slower ball full on off, defended back to the bowler, well bowled

36.4

Faulkner to Cleary, OUT, good slower ball full and outside off, backs away and gets a big top edge on the drive, Birt runs back to ttake the catch

MF Cleary c Birt b Faulkner 1 (8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 12.50

The Victorians have absolutely self-destructed in the final six overs, losing 5/25 to create a lead of 121 runs when it looked more like being 150 when they were 5/169. Tasmania will resume their innings in about 10 minutes with Ed Cowan and Luke butterworth at the crease. It's game on here at the G, join me for the final 18 overs shortly!
