Rob Quiney continued his brilliant start to the season with an entertaining 92 that allowed Victoria to comfortably overhaul New South Wales' 275 at North Sydney Oval. The target had been set up by a blistering century from Dominic Thornely but the Blues attack, lacking its key men, was unable to put the brakes on Quiney and Chris Rogers.
New South Wales were without the fast bowlers Nathan Bracken and Mark Cameron, both of whom had niggling injuries, and the inexperienced new-ball pair of Burt Cockley and Moises Henriques did not have enough bite. Quiney and Rogers made a flying opening on the small ground and the 150-run stand was not broken until the 24th over.
Quiney crunched nine fours and three sixes in his 85-ball innings and it extended his impressive purple patch that has brought him 205 FR Cup runs in three games as well as his maiden first-class century. Rogers has also been strong and continued to justify his selection as a one-day opener with a solid 74 that kept Victoria on track after Quiney departed.
The win was the third of the season for Victoria, who are the only undefeated team in the FR Cup this campaign. They wrapped up their powerful chase with four overs to spare, which was an excellent result after the New South Wales captain Thornely recorded his highest score in eight seasons of domestic one-day cricket.
Thornely's 108 came from 90 balls and he drove impressively down the ground, striking seven sixes. He was building on a steady platform that came from two of the Blues' young stars, Phillip Hughes (55) and Usman Khawaja (45), but the youthful side was soon taught a lesson by a Victoria line-up that has reached the past two FR Cup finals.
