The legspinner Cullen Bailey, the forgotten man in Australia's slow-bowling stocks, has been called into the South Australia squad for his first state appearance of the season. Bailey has named in a 12-man squad for the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland in Adelaide starting on Friday.

He will be joined in the group by Mark Cosgrove, another former Redbacks regular who was once a fringe member of the Australian squad. Cosgrove has had no first-class action in a year and has been only an occasional member of the one-day team this season but has been called upon due to injuries to the batsmen Tom Cooper and Daniel Christian and the ODI call-up of Callum Ferguson.

Bailey has had trouble ousting his spin colleague Dan Cullen from the side in 2008-09, just a season after they both held Cricket Australia contracts. But Cullen's Sheffield Shield figures of 10 wickets at 77.70 this season, and a match analysis of 1 for 187 in the most recent game, prompted the selectors to send him back to club cricket.

The run of injuries - Matthew Weeks is also on the sick list - has forced the Redbacks to name a pair of uncapped players for Friday's game. The fast bowler Jake Haberfield is hoping for a first-class debut after impressing in the FR Cup, while Michael Cranmer, 19, has also been included.

The opening batsman James Smith has also been returned to the squad having played one match early in this season's campaign. The Redbacks are last on the Sheffield Shield table and they need an outright win to stay in the hunt for a spot in the final with three rounds to go.

South Australia squad Daniel Harris, James Smith, Michael Klinger, Cameron Borgas, Mark Cosgrove, Graham Manou (capt, wk), Aaron O'Brien, Mark Cleary, Cullen Bailey, Jake Haberfield, Peter George, Michael Cranmer.
