India have left out Harbhajan Singh from the squad for the Test series in Australia, picking Pragyan Ojha and R Ashwin as the spinners in the 17-man group. Medium-pacer Praveen Kumar, who was part of the team in England, returns to the squad in place of legspinner Rahul Sharma, who was part of the squad for the ongoing Test series against West Indies but did not play a match.

The squad comprised eight specialist batsmen, two wicketkeeper batsmen, five fast bowlers and two spinners. Wriddhiman Saha was named as reserve wicketkeeper, while Zaheer Khan, who is recovering from hamstring and ankle injuries, will join the team subject to match fitness.

"Zaheer will play in a couple of Ranji Trophy matches. And once he is fully match-fit and everything is fine, he will join the side," Kris Srikkanth, the chairman of India's selectors, said. "He may also go with the team as by the time [the team leaves] he would have played a couple of matches."

MS Dhoni, the India captain, said that Zaheer testing his fitness in a Ranji game for Mumbai against Orissa would be beneficial for both the player and the team. "He [Zaheer] gives his 100%. But if you have to undergo rehab it has to be done really well," Dhoni said. "We are hoping that he is 100% fit for the Australia series. Once he plays a first-class game that will help judge to some extent the way he feels."

Zaheer bowled to the Indian batsmen in the lead up to the third Test against West Indies at the Wankhede and Dhoni said he "looked quite fit."

Harbhajan's omission was a result of left-arm spinner Ojha and offspinner Ashwin produced compelling performances in the Test series against West Indies. Ashwin was the series' highest wicket-taker with 22 scalps at 22.90 apiece, while Ojha took 20 at 22.50. Ashwin also scored his maiden international century in the third Test at the Wankhede.

"Unfortunately, we cannot help it [not picking Harbhajan] as the team selects itself," Srikkanth said. "In Australia, you cannot have more than two spinners. Pragyan Ojha and Ashwin are doing an excellent job. Sometimes it becomes bad luck and sometimes people miss out. I'm sure everyone has their own time and space to come back."

Harbhajan had been dropped from the squad for the West Indies series after a poor performance in England, where he took only two wickets in two Tests before an abdominal-muscle injury forced him to return home. He failed to perform in the Ranji Trophy as well, managing only two wickets at an average of 102 in three matches as captain of Punjab. On India's previous tour to Australia, in 2007-08, Harbhajan had a tally of eight wickets in three Tests at 61.25. He conceded over 100 runs in an innings three times in that series.

Yuvraj Singh, who will miss the upcoming ODI series against West Indies because of a lung problem, and Suresh Raina, were also not in not in the team.

"We have chosen a very balanced side. We have taken everything into account, including fitness and Australian conditions," Srikkanth said. "If you ask me today whether this team can beat Australia in Australia, I would say I'm very confident. We should beat Australia in Australia in a Test series.

"Our batsman are in form, our bowlers are in form. And now we have all kinds of bowlers. We have fast bowlers, medium-fast bowlers, we have swing bowlers, spinners - left-arm and offspin," Srikkanth said. "So depending on the conditions there the team management will select the team on a match-to-match basis."

Squad: MS Dhoni (capt &wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron, Rohit Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, Praveen Kumar, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha, Zaheer Khan (subject to fitness).

I notice optimism running high among Indian fans. There is good reason for that as Australia are at their weakest in a long time. Despite that, they still won a test quite comfortably against a strong England team last year. India's batting cannot fail like in England for two reasons - 1) there is too much quality in that line-up to fail for two consecutive away series, 2) the Aussie bowling attack is nowhere near as good as England's (Cummins may come as a surprise but can't imagine Siddle running through the Indian line-up, Harris is almost always injured and Johnson is, well, Johnson). It is India's bowlers, especially the pacemen, that will determine the result of the series. OZ land is a graveyard for many spinners and I don't see Ashwin/Ojha doing too well there. If Zaheer is fit and plays all the matches, it is hard to see anything other than an Indian win or a drawn series. If not, it is most likely going to be 1-0 or 2-0 to Aus.

if zaheer is fit then there is any chance for in india to win other wise australia will 2-0

Posted by symsun on (November 28, 2011, 16:17 GMT)

India's success in the last few years are majorly due the long tail we had. Considering that Ashwin shud play ahead of Ojha, but who knows Ojha bowling alone can be more economic than Ashwin's economy + batting score. Lets see who gives success to India.

@ people taking objection to my lifeless, flat tracks remark - IF tracks assisting spinners are termed as dead, lifeless and flat (with reference to pacers) THEN isn't it true that tracks assisting pacers will also be termed as dead, lifeless and flat with reference to spinners? So, get over it bros. Ask your boys to play on Indian Tracks before terming our challenging and sporting tracks as dead, flat and lifeless. Oh yes, those greentops are lifeless, flat and dead nonsense tracks with reference to spinners.

I think the squad is good....the 2 spinners deserve the opportunity, although having harbhajan would have been nice, we have to face the fact that he has not bowled well for India in tests in a long time....i think he should be considered for the ODI's as he is really tight when it comes to runs....the 5 fast bowlers and 8 batsmen are ideal for the squad...Virat Kohli is a really good pick and he should be persisted with...Raina has not proved he is a versatile player in non-indian conditions other than a few performances which is bound to happen considering the amount of opportunities he has got....All in all the squad is the best we have and hope all our players are fit for the entire series unlike the England tour, fingers crossed.

Posted by svel on (November 28, 2011, 11:10 GMT)

if experience and past performances must be considered to pick a squad then can we pick kapil dev as a fast bowler only cos he has experience.... similar case in harbajan's case... he is a legend i agree ... let him stay so... but u cant play him ... tat ll be foolish.... currently i think raina spins the ball more than harbajan and picks up more wickets ;)

Posted by   on (November 28, 2011, 11:04 GMT)

Irfan should be in team ..It is not under the Umesh and Arun and spinners will not able to hold Australian batsman on fast pitches...Pragyan and Ashwin is good choice but fast bawling all-rounder badly needed for India...but Dhoni and selectors repeating agian and again ....we have already seen pur position on fast pictes vs England in England ....

Posted by Fast_Track_Bully on (November 28, 2011, 10:03 GMT)

this time, India will win the series 2-0. Because Buknor is retired...lol

Posted by   on (November 28, 2011, 9:34 GMT)

By far the best team selected for the Australian tour. All credits goes to the selectors for not being biased to past performances. If Zaheer is fit , then he, Ishant, Praveen and Umesh should be in playing 11, we might then have to sacrifice one spinner, it should be either Ashwin or Ojha, however being a good batsman cum a bowler , Ashwin should be in the 11. Therefore , the 11 players who should play the first test would be : Shewag, Gambhir, Dravid, Sachin, Laxman, Dhoni, Ashwin, Zaheer, Ishant, Praveen and Umesh Yadav.

Posted by   on (November 28, 2011, 9:28 GMT)

Why the repeated cry for an Irfan Pathan? His pace has receded - from high 130s to low 120s, and he is not half the bowler he used to be. He has lost his craft while trying to be an all-rounder. India can do without any 'passengers' in the team. The team selected for Australia is balanced, and is based entirely on form and performance. The selectors merit kudos for a job well done.

Posted by   on (November 28, 2011, 9:17 GMT)

I feel this is the good team to beat Aus in Aus, It doesn't a matter who r all in form or not.. the main thing s how our guys ll adapt the climate n situation... usually our guys won't play full fledged in the 1st test in all the series.. so lets see this time..how they r gonna play...

Posted by ricky_3007 on (November 28, 2011, 9:11 GMT)

Good that Bhajji is out of the team for some time now...He was occupying space and not doing good...even if there is a need of only 1 spinner in a match in Aus , Ashwin and Ojha can be handy for that spot as per the requirement..Yuvraj got number of chances to prove but with no success...he is proving strongly that he is good for only ODI and T20..Pacers need to cash in the opportunity to learn the trick of the fast pitches out side subcontinent....Good and balanced side...All the best!!

Posted by bluebillion on (November 28, 2011, 9:03 GMT)

It is unfortunate that Pujara's been injured and untested this domestic season. I would have preferred him over Rahane. I firmly believe that while it might be tough on Dravid, he is the only opening option on Aussie pitches should Sehwag or Gambhir get injured. Thrusting Rahane on such pitches on his test debut would only mean that Dravid might be in rather quickly! I hope Zak's fitness is good this time as we will need him to mentor the young bowlers. If not, the selectors should pick Irfan rather than going back to the likes of RP, Munaf and Sreesanth who've lived their 9 lives. Mind you ... Irfan is on his 8th too!

Posted by   on (November 28, 2011, 8:54 GMT)

Bring in Irfan. He was the X factor last time around in both the test and ODI series.

Posted by gi.gos on (November 28, 2011, 8:34 GMT)

Future Test Team batsmen probables. sehwag, gambhir, mukund, rahane, pujara, rayudu, rohit, manoj, kohli, pandey, raina, dhawan, uthappa, dhoni

Posted by   on (November 28, 2011, 8:24 GMT)

I would give a nod to Irfan and Parthiv instead of Umesh & Saha. Apart from that , its a good side selected .

Posted by   on (November 28, 2011, 8:20 GMT)

When Ashwin is filling in the shoes of Bhajji and contributing more than him, why not bhajji prove himself in the current Ranji Season to bring his form back and perform for the country? Dropping Bhajji for ODI's is not a correct call considering his performance in ODI's as an economical bowler. But as far as tests are concerned, in 2011 he took 20 wickets in 6 matches at average of 40+ and strike rate of 80+ which needs to be improved. Also his performance in 3 ranji games is not upto the mark. 2 wickets @102. Ashwin- 22 wkts @22.9 Vs WI. I would be happy if Irfan had been included in place of Umesh as his experience with Aussie tracks and his recent performances in domestic circuit would have been greatly helpful for Team india. Also he can perform the role of a pinch hitter.

India with the chosen team can be expected to fare much better in Australia than how they did in England. Reasons: Australia is not as strong a team as England was both in bowling and batting. Indian batting strength. It will not seam and swing in Australia as much as it does in England. Australian pitches are more sporting and batsmen oriented. However, my concerns are that India would have done better had they played with WI on pitches that were more like the ones in Australia and that would have made better preparation. It is however going to be a well contested series like the recent SA Vs Aus series compared to the one sided India Vs Eng series in England

Posted by awalia on (November 28, 2011, 7:41 GMT)

Question No. 1: Who is the most economical indian bowler in ODI in 2011 Ans: Harbhajan Singh (4.28 in 17 matches)

Question No2 . Who has the best bowling figures in Test matches 2011 Ans: Habhajan Singh 7/120 against South Africa

Question No. 3. Which Idian bowler bowls most ecnomical spell in 2011 Ans. Harbhajan Singh 10-2-24-1 in his Last ODI

Than WHY he is out of team

ITS NOT CRICKET. I am smelling something else. Is everything is OK between Dhoni and Harbhajan ?

What else you expect from him?

Srikanth are you Listening

I feel for Bhajji, Jaffer and Parthiv. Who is the third specialist opener for Australia tour. No one. If need be they will ask Rahane to fill in. Feel bad for Rahane as he is not an opener. I don't think it will be good for his career. In any case Jaffer is far more talented, technically more sound and much more experienced than likes of Rahane or Rohit. One fails to understand the blatant bias against Jaffer. On the other hand one fails to understand blatant favor for W.Saha. He somehow makes it to the team by hook or by crook. Parthiv again is made the casualty despite good performances both with bat and keeping. Despite 22 wicket haul by Ashwin in this series I still think Ashwin is a Ranji level off spinner who has a good carrom ball. Even West Indies batsmen had started reading his carrom ball well and had sorted him out by end of series. Favourable pitches and average west indies batsmen were the reasons behind Ashwin success. India will sorely miss Bhajji's experience and guile.

Posted by awalia on (November 28, 2011, 7:14 GMT)

i think only Harbhajan is responsible for 7-0 lost series in England ? Is everything is OK between Harbhajan and Dhoni ? THINK ?

How come Gambhir is getting the nod again and again when his average in last 2 years has been 32 runs per innings and he hasn't scored a century in his last 34 innings which is almost 12 Test matches and three series. Unthinkable it is...absolutely. Gambhir's weakness against short pitch stuff and rising delivery outside off stump on bouncy tracks is almost written in stone by now. When lesser mortals - Rampaul, Sammy, Edwards could sort him out what will Siddle, Cumins, Johnson do to him.His fitness is also a questionable these days. But still he gets the nod for Australia tour. Ridiculous, isn't it.On such an important tour, they leave third specialist opener slot vacant for guys like Rahane or Rohit. We can only imagine their fate against swinging cherry on fast bouncy tracks-Perth, Melbourn, etc.By excluding Jaffer Srikkanth and his cronies caused a miscarriage of justice again. Poor guy! However, he shouldn't lose hope.In a years time Srikkanth, Hirwani will be out of selection team

i am so happy that at last bajji and yuvi has been left out of this indian team..

Posted by kingcobra85 on (November 28, 2011, 5:09 GMT)

I think Ashwin can be a batsmen. So we can play an extra bowler in Australia. 4 seamers and Ashwin would be great! but i doubt they will drop one batsmen. Ishant, Umesh ,Aaron all bowling about 145 is going to be a treat to the eyes..If Zaheer is not fit we would have sreesanth who can also bowl 140 + ... i dont think we had such a quick bowling line up ever!! We always had these thudlers but what a refreshing twist!! Play Four Quicks dhoni :)

Posted by   on (November 28, 2011, 4:51 GMT)

"We needed an extra opener (Abhinav Mukund would be an obvious choice given his recent exploits in domestic cricket) instead of 3 choices for No. 6" ---- I think Deepak made a fair point. But they are not bold enough to drop Gambhir even after a failure in say first test and give that slot to Pujara!!

Posted by   on (November 28, 2011, 2:47 GMT)

Overall there were good signs for India throughout the series. Hopefully Ishant & Zaheer are fully fit throughout the Australia tour. Yadav also seems to be a good fast bowling prospect as he's got good pace. all 3 should have better pitches to bowl on in Australia than the roads they make in India. The #6 spot is still a concern. The selectors should not let the 2 fifties Kohli made on a dead pitch fool them. I strongly doubt he will be able to handle the pace & bounce of Johnson, Harris, Cummins & Siddle in Australia but i guess they dont have much of a choice.

Aaron struggled to get wickets so if Zaheer or Ishant is not fit then i think it would be best to go with 2 spinners as Australia will be unfamiliar with Ashwin & Ohja.

bearing the fraility of Zaheer & Ishant in mind i would go with 5 bowlers & Dhoni instead of Kohli @ 6. The top 5 batsmen actually pick themselves.

my 11 -- Sehwag Gambir Dravid Sachin Laxman Dhoni, Ashwin Ishant Zaheer Yadav & Ohja

what happened to Chetashwar Pujara? Ignored again the poor guy. He is a better batsmen than Rahane and his records explain it all.

agree with deepak, gambir is playing poor and is overrated. selectors should have selected pujara instead of him

@Zico123 LOL yeah send them over tell them to bring some spades so they can help move some snow off the wickets!

Posted by zico123 on (November 27, 2011, 18:23 GMT)

very good selection, harbhajan doesn't justify selection on current form, he should consult Prasanna, Kumble, Saqlain to sort his problems

Posted by Deepak on (November 27, 2011, 18:22 GMT)

Poor and negligent selection. It seems that Indian selectors aren't watching the games close enough. Gambhir has been having a poor run in Test cricket for a while now, and even when he gets going, he tends to give it away. We needed an extra opener (Abhinav Mukund would be an obvious choice given his recent exploits in domestic cricket) instead of 3 choices for No. 6 in Kohli, Sharma and Rahane. Seriously, is Rahane even going to play a single game ? And although Varun Aaron has good pace and great potential, he seems a bit under-cooked to be going to such an important tour. Our middle order has been struggling to convert good starts into something more substantial, which is very uncommon considering their records and reputation. It's a major concern. Let's see. Good luck to the boys though. Really hope we win this series.

Posted by zico123 on (November 27, 2011, 18:19 GMT)

Zaheer, Ishant and Ashwin should play all 4 test matches, the fourth bowler for MCG and Adelaide should be Praveen kumar, for Sydney its Ojha, for Perth it is Umesh Yadav

Posted by zico123 on (November 27, 2011, 18:17 GMT)

Yuvraj and Raina should use the time off during indian test tour of Australia to play county cricket, it wouls really help them to tighten up as test batsman

Posted by zico123 on (November 27, 2011, 18:13 GMT)

very good team selection, hard luck for Pujara, as he didn't get enough chance to show his case, he should be back in squad in future for sure, he is future of indian test cricket, future no. 4

Posted by   on (November 27, 2011, 18:05 GMT)

Harbajan is one of the best spinners we had. We never underscore him. But currently , he is out of form and lets wait till he reinvent his spin. ASWIN & OHJA did well in the current series and lets hope the same in Australia. If anyone needs a player to counter offence the Aussies attitude, we have Gambir & Kohli. SO no worries. we will do better withou Harbajan.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2011, 17:31 GMT)

Bhajji has shown a lot of mettle against the aussies but the past can't be considered for current selections.....over the years (esp. after Anil Kumble's retirement) he has become very complacent of his place, He has lost his magic flight and drift with which he foxed the aussies . Ojha has been very consistent and Ashwin has shown that fighting spirit once Bhajji had to handle pressure . Seriously !!! if u can't take wickets in friendly tracks in Ranji cricket , no matter what you've done in the past you cannot expect to skittle the aussies. And one valid point made by (iammadhu) . Ashwin gets bounce not only becoz he is tall but also he flights the ball which bhajji has forgotten (amnesia i guess :P).Ojha bowls very well too and i expect him to do well in australia too . I'd love to see the turbanator at his best but ppl stop blindly voicing for him based on his PAST performances , Live In the PRESENT ........this team is good and one for the future!!!Hope they come out trumps!Shew..

Posted by hramesh on (November 27, 2011, 17:14 GMT)

Dear selectors: is one ranji match enough to test someone's fitness for a tough australian tour? i fear that Zaheer will pull up injured again, and then he will be a liability for the rest of that test.

so the indian selectors acting like west indies is a tough team to beat, they gon miss Harbhajan just watch .dont understand these selectors ,apart from west indies india is my team.

Posted by WC2011Champs on (November 27, 2011, 16:13 GMT)

Though good selection overall selectors still have to be more consistent. Parthiv Patel had looked solid in counterattacking (short pitched bowling) in England. His gutsy style would have served well in Australia, filled second wk spot, and filled reserve opener spot. (Agreed he was given too many chances in ODI against England at home and he did not come good). Saha cannot be all that. What is the story with Pujara? He plays one IPL game and goes out for a year with injury. This is a joke.

The pace attack is little inexperienced. And Ishant continues to disappoint with his wicket-taking abilities after 4 years of international cricket. Only one mantra for him - attack the stumps. Replay Styne's and Mcgrath's tapes and attack the stumps.

THE ONE CRICKETER WHO GOT DEEP UNDER THE SKIN OF THE HAUGHTY AUSTRALIANS HAVE BEEN LEFT OUT DUE TO SHORTSIGHTEDNESS OF THE SELECTORS, CAPTAIN & COACH.....HARBHAJAN SINGH HAVE ALWAYS PERFORMED WITH GRIT AGAINST THEM....& HAS EVEN CHIPPED IN WITH VALUABLE RUNS WHILE BATTING AGAINST THEM....ITS DEFINITELY A HUGE BLUNDER NOT TO SELECT SUCH A COURAGEOUS PLAYER AGAINST THE TOUGHEST OPPONENTS IN CRICKET IN THEIR OWN DEN....AUSTRALIANS WILL BE MIGHTY PLEASED THEY DON'T HAVE TO CONFRONT "THE OBNOXIOUS LITTLE WEED" ON THEIR GROUND.... INDIA'S CHANCES DEPENDS ON HOW WELL RAHUL DRAVID & VVS LAXMAN BATS...R.P.SINGH ALSO BOWLED VERY WELL ON THE LAST TOUR...

i hope Ajinkya Rahane will get his test cap. that guy has performed very well in last four seasons in all domestic competition. people like badrinath, murali vijay, abhinav mukund who can perform only at home should never get a chance. Ajinkya showed his talent in england against the brutal attack what he has in his kitty. Good to see Parthiv Patel not making to this squad. the worst player. cant bat well, cant keep well n we all have seen his fielding in england n in india also. keeping Ajinkya in squad will make Sehwag rethink about his style. sometimes you need to leave your style n play according to the situation. Dhoni understood that very early n now he is showing what an ideal captain should do.....

Some would laugh, and many would disagree, but the one man who had a part in balancing the cricket in the last decade was Harbhajan (along with ganguly). He dented the Aussie spirit, and took on every attacker they had - Hayden, Gilchrist, Ponting, Lehaman, and symonds Once upon a time, and that was not many years back, The Aussies used to smother the oppostion to nullity, so ruthless were they - and the world of cricket was just Aussies vs the rest. Yes, one can say they lost their star players to retirement - but they had a bench as large as the indian coastline, still they are now a shadow of that glorious decade. Harbhajan boxed with them, lost a few bouts, but he showed the world that it could take on the aussies. That, i think was his great contribution, and yes, you cannot buy 400 wickets by roaming in an indian bazaar with a travvelrs bag on your back. Best luck to Srikanth for promoting his lads though, and mark my word, the Aussies will place Ashwin at his right place.

uni dimensional attack (if Zak is unfit for the tour) .... Irfan should have been selected... and batting lineup looks great except for shah...

Posted by iammadhu on (November 27, 2011, 14:45 GMT)

i think ashwin will be successful. but ohja won't in Aus, cuz ashwin can trouble batsman if pitch has bounce, because he is tall bowler. I would have liked to see rahul sharma play the last test match against Windies. hope zaheer bhai gets fit, then we have good chance to win the series.

Gambhir, Sehwag, Dravid, Sachin, Laxman, Kohli/Rohit, Dhoni,

Now can u guess who will be the four bowlers playing in austrailia will umesh yadav & aaron get a chance ??? A Big Question ?????????????????

Posted by   on (November 27, 2011, 14:19 GMT)

Good team except for two. The inclusion of Wridhiman Saha seems to me like an guess ,as Parthiv Patel, a more experienced hand has been omitted during the selection. Another concern in the selection was the inclusion of Kohli. It is time that the selectors think of a good replacement for the fab 3 and I don't think Kohli has the temperament to be one in the Test team. It would have been better if the selectors had tried Badrinath for the just concluded West Indies tour and the upcoming Australian tour. Just by scoring two half centuries Kohli cannot become a good test player. When India needed him to stay and finish the game he threw his wicket. Rohit Sharma has failed to prove himself in the past and again relying on him is not a good idea. The selectors should have tried Badrinath ahead of Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

its all nameless to talk about Irfan pathan,Ashish nehra, Ajit agarkar, wasim jaffer etc. despite taking more than 150 wickets irfan is not in the team despite taking almiost 300 wickets ajit is not in the team its all senseless to talk about all these players.

Posted by meastrostroke on (November 27, 2011, 14:14 GMT)

@Rumy1... Even harbhjan cant take as many wickets as ashwin against west-indies. Ashwin's entry has been delayed only by the past reputation of bhajji.. he was travelling with the team only with the past performance and doesnot deserve his place in the squad.. Check the stats.. ashwin single series has taken many wickets than bhajji's entire 2011 calendar year.

Posted by guptasanjib2008 on (November 27, 2011, 14:01 GMT)

Bhajji is a grt bowler. But if u see his pattern of taking wickets u will find that he picks wickets at a bunch (4 to 5 wickets). But that can't happen in Aus as the tracks are not favourable to the spinners. I would put my bet on Ojha as he is a slow traditional left arm bowler who can take wickets by deceiving in flight, length n turn. The success of the tour depends a lot , if not the most, on Zak. How he bowls and how does he shapes other. All the best Team India.

Posted by aussieperthindian on (November 27, 2011, 14:00 GMT)

I think Pujara is returning from injury and not ready for test cricket yet though a fit Pujara is a must in any future squad. Parthiv is a little unlucky-he has improved since his disastrous series against Australia. Ashwin will perform-have faith. I think his handling of the last over against the WI was great-he ensured India could not lose and there was no second run off the last ball-so leave him alone-I am a fan! Zaheer is crucial for a well balanced pace attack. Go team India!!

some people complaining for onesided pitches in australia.... com'on guys, we people in subcontinent also welcome them with spin dead pitches... that is why it is called home advantage.... don't worry, u have the batting to cope with it, best wishes for the trip, go on and show that sub continent teams can do well even on bouncy tracks.... um a little worried about pace attack which still looks ordinary in the absence of zaheer khan.... anyways best wishes from PAKISTAN

@rumy1 I am truly agree with you in case of jaffer and parthiv.but not in case of ashwin.ashwin is far better than harbhajan. and according to me ishant has done poor in against england & westindies instead of going with so many fast bowlers selecters should have picked jadeja instead of ishant.......

Posted by TRAM on (November 27, 2011, 13:27 GMT)

Dear Mrs. Dhoni/Fletcher, please keep both Ashiwn & Ohja in the playing 11. It is always the combination of bowlers, not just one bowler, that produces results. Kumble & Harbajan combination got so many wkts together. So did, Bedi/Prasanna/Chandra/Venkat. Now we have Ashwin & Ohja who together would be deadly for Aus to handle. Since Ashwin is also a reasonable batter, you can drop one specialist batsman and keep the 5 batsman + Dhoni + 5 bowlers - with 3 fast bowlers and 2 spinners. And you have Sehwag & SRT (spin) and Kholi (fast) to give little variations/surprises in bowling. Please please please ... have 2 spinners in the 11.

Posted by Kashi0127 on (November 27, 2011, 13:23 GMT)

@Rumy1 Who is Jaffer? If we are to still consider Jaffer why not Farook Engineer? Seriouly there are other contenders like Robin Uthappa, Vinay Pandey, Pujara, Badri and most important of all Vijay etc.

Posted by Kashi0127 on (November 27, 2011, 13:19 GMT)

Yes, good selection. Particularly dropping of Harbhajan. When will the selectors have the courage to drop Sachin Tendulkar as well

Posted by Gizza on (November 27, 2011, 13:14 GMT)

@Rumy1, last time Jaffer played the first two Tests in Australia and he was SO bad. It is no coincidence after after they dropped him and replaced him with Sehwag India's fortunes (lost the first two then for the next two won one and lost one). Also for all the Bhajji fans he was also pathetic. He couldn't even get Ponting out in the later tests. He became Ishant's bunny instead of Harbhajan's. Harbhajan has been one of the worst performing Indian bowlers in Australia (and in the last 5 years everywhere). His average of 73 is probably worse than most Zimbabwean and Bangladeshi bowlers.@Dravid Gravitas, Sydney and Adelaide will spin. Kumble could get 5 wicket hauls in Australia. So could MacGill, Warne and even Swann. The trick on Australian pitches is to bowl more side spin than overspin. The bounce is very helpful for skillful spinners. In India's case, Kumble could master it (though inconsistent) while Harbhajan always flopped. Let's see if Ash and Ojh will be Kumble's or Bhajji's.

@ Balaji Nagarajan : Dhoni got a century in the 2 nd test match against WI just a week back.U should be having a long dream.. Wake up dude...

Posted by   on (November 27, 2011, 13:06 GMT)

@balaji - The idea of making Dhoni a non-playing captain is absolutely ridiculous. Dhoni may not have been performing THAT greatly lately but he is still a match winning batsmen and the best wicket keeper india has at the moment. A non-playing captain may as well be the coach.. sitting out and sending messages. The captain needs to involved in the game more than any other player.

Posted by nafdan on (November 27, 2011, 12:51 GMT)

@ dravid _gravitas: hehehehee.... very greedy... it assists spinners man... when swann, warne, vettori cud do why cant ur spinners do in the same wicket... pathetic man... dont cry for ur lost series everyday...india has a formidable batting lineup that no other team has but cudn deliver it when needed specially on thos wickets...if all the pitches are made to spin then y u play fast bowlers.. infact play 6 spinners , one keeper and 4 batsmen... everything will b fine...

Posted by ns_krishnan on (November 27, 2011, 12:50 GMT)

@Rumy1: "Ashwin is a Ranji level off-spinner" Maybe he is, but on current form your favorite Bhajji is not even that. He hasn't exactly set the world on fire, has he ? 2 wickets from 3 games for 204 runs in Ranji Trophy cricket. I am not saying that Ashwin is going to pick up truck load of wickets in Australia. By performing against WI, he and Ojha have earned a chance to play against Australia. You have every right to be disppointed if your favorite isn;t picked. But do not belittle other players.

Posted by muski on (November 27, 2011, 12:19 GMT)

Well I pity the selectors in this period of Indian cricket when there is problem of plenty even though the quality of our cricket is quite poor. This shows the cricketing ability of our cricketers ( more so of the bowlers) is almost all the same. There is hardly anything to pick and chose and between them. Its only a continuity factor which has taken bowlers like Ojha, Ashwin, Aaron and Yadav thru. No point in worrying about Harbhajan. He has lost the steam to perform well. You cant blame him for that. He has made enough money to run out of gas. Hope at least Kohli and Rohit will make this experience count to get into the rather very big shoes of the men whom they are likely to replace in the near future.I predict 3-0 for Australia. If our guys can do better, they would do the Indian fans a great favour.

great selection. those who are asking for pujara should well know the fact that after getting injured during IPL, he is yet to play any form of competitive cricket. really happy to see rohit selected in the sqaud. people complaining about it should know that he averages around 63 in first class cricket which is excellent

Posted by   on (November 27, 2011, 12:09 GMT)

I think its a good selection , After what we faced in England it shows that the selection pannel is not ready to take any chances , Which is a great improvement . As far as the squad is concerned it is perfectly balanced with backup players for all the frontliners . It will now be a big task for the team management to pick up the playing 11 for the boxing day test match . Hopefully they play with 3 seamers ( Aaron , yadav and ishanth) And Ashwin as one spinner . The batting has no problem .

Posted by   on (November 27, 2011, 11:58 GMT)

Sachin Tendulkar must be selected for the last 2 ODI on WI series which will give him bit practice on oneday and may be help him to complete his 100th test century. In Aus tour Sachin shoul also be selected for oneday as well which also may allow him to complete 50 century on oneday. I think Sachin is still far better than any young player. However, in recent test series on WI, although he showed good performance, Sachin still need to work hard to improve his technique as he got out very cheaply by playing loosing shot selection. Anyway, all the very best to our Little Master.

Srikkanth, not very humble is he. What a bigheaded statement! Hope he falls flat on his face. He could have said we have a better than even chance of winning the series. And to Dravid Gravitas, get yourself some decent bowlers and then the tracks won't be dead, or are you making excuses already? You want everything to go your own way all over the world. Typical of some of the indian supporters!

Fair work done by selectors,Nice to see that selectors are continue with their faith in ojha & Ashwin, surprised selection of Rohit sharma & saha is also there for me.i feel one genuine opener is short in this squad.

Posted by OutCast on (November 27, 2011, 10:39 GMT)

The reason Sachin didn't last was (1) he knows he can't get his hundred (2) he was upset he wasn't sent to open the innings (3) when it matters, Sachin would shut himself out (4) Sachin miscalculated WI bowling is as lousy as their batting- especially on a deteriorating pitch

Posted by Jai_India on (November 27, 2011, 10:32 GMT)

i dont know is Ishant Sharma is a good pick? Ofcourse he bowled his heart out in most of the series.. But creating opportunities and taking wickets is much different.. i somehow think he misses something.. Sreesanth was not a bad choice... but makes no diffeernce.. i think he is injured now.. Saw some matches Irfan played in ranji matches. he looked fine... think he is a good option if ZAK fails to prove his fitness.. No harbajan is good.. he will defenitely bounce back.. it is good he gets some time to think about himself.. Ashwin is defenitely a very good one... hope he gets more opportunities.. i think rohit and kholi should get oportunities this time.. both are really good.. even if they dont perform in this tour they are investments for future..

Posted by pravineswar on (November 27, 2011, 10:30 GMT)

The team seems to be the best, we can offer at this point of time. But personally would like to see Virat playing No.03, Dravid at No.04 and so on. We saw Virat scoring half centuries in both innings but we need him to learn to build big innings required in tests and its high time we give him space to learn it in the middle rather in dressing room. We are going to miss No.03, 04 & 05 rather than Rahul, Sachin & VVS. Virat, Rohit, Rahane, Pujara, Manish, Amabati with their class should compete for 3 to 5 in the order. Also, playing with tail (No.06) is different game altogether and players like Yuvi, Suresh, R. Jadeja & Irfan with their power game are best suited and to be groomed as we also require left hander in our order to have balance. Bowling aboard is always a concern, in most cases bowling more than 125 overs with 4 bowlrs, we are to sure to stress Umesh & Yadav. It is essential Praveen & the spinner take bulk of bowling and give Ishant & other fast bowler enough break 2 refresh

a good decision to persist with the two spinners based on form and fitness..but indian cricket has a history of dampening the careers of players who have shown promising signs..all these years we were grumping for not having an allrounder..when irfan showed a lot of promise we all dont even know if he is playing domestic cricket or not...you do not dump out players that easily..on a whole the squad looks a promising one..!!!

Posted by peterss on (November 27, 2011, 9:18 GMT)

@OutCast Ashwin can state his case for an allrounder. Look at his batting, all suited to be an allrounder. Not only bcos of the 100, but the way he bats. Has the technique for a batsmen. Bowling wise, dont think he will perform like the WI series in Aus but will certainly be the trump card and potentially best bowler in the tour for India. The only other possible replacement bhajji who is no where near the radar. Bhajji has a poor bowling ave in Aus btw.

Posted by   on (November 27, 2011, 9:06 GMT)

Good move to drop Bhaji..he has been performing poorly consistently for years.I m sure ashwin/ojha wud perform lot better than him.I wud abhinav mukund instead of rahane

@Dravid South African tracks are not dead and lifeless, most of the time we prepare green tops, if you cant perform on them then you should not be playing international cricket, true world champions should be able play on anything, anywhere, whats the point of preparing tracks that only suit you

Posted by   on (November 27, 2011, 8:35 GMT)

Good selection overall... wait and see the performance of our players. Can anyone Guess the first test playing XI ?? or bowling attack...

Posted by Rumy1 on (November 27, 2011, 8:13 GMT)

Posted by premendrasinghal on (November 27, 2011, 7:49 GMT)

Tejeshwar Pujara should get a place instead of Rohit Sharma. Rohit Sharma has already been tested so many times and failed. Its good that they didn't pick Bhajji and Sri Santh as they aren't in good form.

Posted by OutCast on (November 27, 2011, 6:54 GMT)

Remember this and put it in a locker- Ashwin will not succeed in Australia, I repeat- Ashwin is a subcontinent bowler who can't deliver lethal deliveries but his performance depends on how bad a pitch is... don't bring his batting into the equation- it's pure fluke... Ashwin would search for reasons to blame for lack of production rather than fixing him to make it happen... WI has returned to reality after two un-West Indian type of innings and remember they were fold for something like 46? by Kenya? with Lara on? Don't use WI as the dipstick to measure one's performance coz it's phony!!!!

Posted by   on (November 27, 2011, 6:53 GMT)

If the concept of non-playing captain is introduced in cricket, it would be good for team india. Dhoni can be that. His captaincy is good, but as a Test bastman his performance has been missing for a long time, now. Ok, before anyone gest worked up by the last 50+ score, do think about the circumstances under which it was made.

I'm not sure how much those dead tracks in Australia will help our bowlers (I mean Ash and Ojh). ICC should make it mandatory that SA, Australia and England don't prepare lifeless dead tracks that don't assist bowlers (I mean spinners).

Looks very much like a balanced team. This team has talent, confidence and a will to win. It is too bad Harbhajan is out. It is time for him to call it a day. His performance no longer can match his bluster or on-filed shenanigans. Ojha and Ashwin stars, on the other hand, are on the ascendancy.

Posted by Kothandaram on (November 27, 2011, 5:26 GMT)

well balanced team picked for Oz tour.. a lot will depend on how Zaheer, Ishant and Aswin bowl on wickets down under. the batting will depend on Sehwag's rapid starts and the 'Big Three'. have to see how Umesh and Aaron shape on as Aussie tours have been tough for newcomers, bowlers especially over the years.. several have been taken on tour and then discarded.

Posted by Anwaar-Sandhu on (November 27, 2011, 5:04 GMT)

i feel it is a good decision, lately harbhajan has been a star in controversies rather than performances that are fundamental for the team. so it is better to give opportunities to young, more committed and inspiring players who have also performed well recently. ashwin and ojha is the way to go..... best wishes for team india in australia. sub continent teams need to show that they can play competitive cricket on fast tracks out of their comfort zone.... looking forward for a (hopefully) good series ANWAAR from PAKISTAN

i cant understand the selection of rohit sharma...the possible explanation can be he did the substitute fielder roll well....raina got a double in ranji nd rohit only scored a hundred...past performances of rohit are also not good....pujara is lost somewhere..searching for reasons to select rohit

Posted by   on (November 27, 2011, 4:30 GMT)

In what appears to be a safety move, the Indian selectors have chosen a team whose mission seems to be the avoidance of a series loss abroad. Raina may have a future in test cricket only if he decides to play with a straight bat. If not, he will share the fate of Yuvraj Singh: A short-order batsman, who cannot be taken seriously in the grand game. Wriddhiman Saha is no longer a surprise, considering that India need a reserve keeper and his selection is detrimental to the development of keeping and batting talent in the country. He will always be the belle who does not go to the dance.

Look well upon the batting lineup. They may be legends of the game but where is the new talent apart from Virat Kohli? The only refreshing lineup is the bowling unit. Win or lose, I daresay they, and we will learn a thing or two on the trip Down Under.

Posted by avmd on (November 27, 2011, 4:19 GMT)

Best possible team from the available players but not a balance team at all. Batting is very strong but bowling one of the weakest among test teams, in Australian wickets. Sharma is the only OK fastman, ( other than a fit Zaheer). Aussies play fast bowlers like Yadav and Aoron in their grade cricket. Indian slow bowlers don't have experinece and variety to be successful in unresponsive wickets. Ahwin claim to like bounce, only time will tell. But, the Aussies, have their own problems, injuries and transition time. Will be a very interesting and close series.

Posted by Joby_George on (November 27, 2011, 3:55 GMT)

This will be a tough tour for india for sure. None of our batsmen seems to be in touch. Saching dreams too much about his 100th ton and wasting his innings, sewagh no where near his form, Gambhir also has lost his rythem also Laxman, he is not playing to his class now a days. Only dependable is "THE WALL".

Posted by devil_in_details on (November 27, 2011, 3:34 GMT)

Great squad and so kudos to selectors. But starting line up was great for the english tour as well so keep fingers crossed for no injuries to anyone mid-tour. As for raina he has too many technical flaws to iron out before he gets a position in the test squad consistently. He is a fighter and may yet do so though. Yuvi not fit is a minor setback and hopefully he will be fit again. And people who are calling for Parthiv probably watch too much odi cricket or have short memories- Parthiv is a goal keeper not a wicket keeper. That guy is so bad he makes Kamraan akmal look good. Parthiv's 'goal keeping' was also the single biggest reason why India was not able to win the 2003 series in Aus and lost the return series in India- the only home series we have lost in ages. He has not improved since he returned against england recently and as for his batting skills- getting bowled to a straight ball while going for a hoick is the sum total of it. Saha any day a better keeper over Parthiv.

If I had to rate the selection of each player on their merit on a scale of 0 to 100, I would rate everybody a 90+ except for Saha (40), Rohit Sharma (60) and Sehwag (80). I would have rated Rahane at 80, but I think he will serve as a good reminder to Sehwag to pull up his socks and show more maturity at the top of the innings.

Harbhajan's career looks over, as he has not been selected for the Australia' tour. I think it is the right decision as Ashwin and Ojha are playing well. Harbhajan only took two wickets in the England's tour and is he is not really a team player at times. Z.Khan's fitness is still a major concern, as he is short of match play. India does have potentially good fast bowlers such as Yadav and Aaron. Encouraging signs in the bowling department, but they need to prepare themselves for the tour by having a few first class matches.

Harbhajan singh bye bye and they should have accomodated jadeja in bcoz of the fact that if he plays at number six it gives us the liberty of going in with 4 fast bowlers out of which 3 being genuine quick bowlers to bowl 140-150 kph aaron, ishant and umesh yadav with meentor zaheer khan subject to his fitness.

England and Australia is different pitches, and as far as india winning in austrilla, its looking gud, this indian faster bowlers are like a fat person loosing 40 pounds and running, they work very hard to be productive on indian pitches, when they get that bounce and pace from Australia pitches, they will dominate. tendulkar is always a great player in austrilla because the pace helps him play cut shots and drives without any power, yuvraj should have been there instead of ajinka, since tall man on high bounce pitch. but india will draw or win the test series.

Rohit Sharma has this unique ability to underwhelm. Fool me once, fool me twice, fool me thrice.........fool me for 40th time.......It goes on. He is the most over-rated player since Vinod Kambli (and has a lobby full of biased brain-dead supporters).

Posted by AnotherCricketer on (November 26, 2011, 21:41 GMT)

HS served the nation well. Now the young blood in Ojha and Ashwin is following his lead and playing well. The selectors are doing the right thing for waiting on HS to recover his form by playing at local and other int'l venues before breaking back into the national squad.

Posted by Mannix16 on (November 26, 2011, 21:23 GMT)

HUGE MISTAKE. Ashwin is supremely overrated. Look at the wickets he has taken. Majority are from the tail, or from extremely turning wickets. and many are from west indian batsman who are prone to spin. If Imran Tahir did not have a good series against SA, what makes you think Ashwin can?

Posted by lokesh.agarwal on (November 26, 2011, 21:18 GMT)

@Shafee Agreed.. Raina should be persisted with...but overall i feel the squad is excellent. I am glad to see the confidence in Kohli. He has excellent technique which should come in handy in Australia. Sachin better step up his game in this series.. he doesnt have alot of time left, and id there is any further contribution that he has to make... this will be one hell of a test. He would be under alot of pressure... As for Harbhajan, he needs to come up with strong performances in first class games to make a strong case. I hope he comes back to his glory days, he was a deadly force back then.

Where is Abimanyu Mithun ...?He did well in Srilankan Series both bat and bowl but they ignored since performs well in domestic cricket.Where is K P Appanna....??

Yeah all in all a grt squad.. I m a big fan of raina bt he has the habit of throwing his wicket.. Better be an ODI specialist like Yuvraaj. But still I hv less confidence in Rohit Sharma.. His body language is lethargic...

I think this is a very good team selection.

@Prashantverma14 - In whose place do you want Raina to play? When you say you want a player in the team also tell whom should he have replaced @Swaminathan Krishnamoorthy - Rahane is the backup opener and I think 5 fast bowlers and two spinners is the correct choice. You need one backup specialist spinner in case one gets injured

Posted by uzairkhan87 on (November 26, 2011, 18:44 GMT)

This squad is a great one. The selectors have done well on their end. I doubt if they can beat Australia on their soil based solely on how they crumbled in England despite having star-studded batsmen.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 18:41 GMT)

Swaminathan Krishnamoorthy, no offence, but i dont think u ever watch cricket or have any idea about cricket. Ajinkya Rahane is a Specialist opener and thr are already 5 pace bowlers (assuming Zaheer is fit). Also pitches like Sydney help spinners a lot, even Australia hav played 2 spinners thr in the past...

Posted by Iyer on (November 26, 2011, 18:35 GMT)

I like the selection of Rohit, kohli and Rahane. wish at least 2 of them get an opportunity to play in the playing X1. If the seniors fail to deliver in the first 2 matches, and if there is a clear indication in their poor form, the team management should not hesitate to drop the seniors in the middle of the tour and give opporutnity to youngsters. Sachin has been a failure for the last 2 series (guys may shout those 2 innings in 90's - but those weren't chanceless and were not scored when it mattered). It would have been better if Mukund and Badri were also chosen. Especially a specialist opener like Mukund is required, as Gambhir is not in form. If Gambhir fails to regain his form in the first 2 innings, then he should be dropped and other option must be evaluated. He has been given numerous chances. He is only talking a lot these days and not performing.

Posted by crazycricketfan4life on (November 26, 2011, 18:35 GMT)

Well not a bad selection but if India does manage to beat Australia with this team, it would be nothing short of a miracle, only because of one reason; the lack of quality fast bowlers. In order to win in Australia, England or South Africa, a team must have capable fast bowlers. They don't need to be express fast but intimidating and effective which I am afraid none of the Indian Bowlers, with the slight exception of Zaheer Khan who seems to be injured all the time. It is time for India to start producing fast bowlers if they are to challenge the higher echelons of the Test World. Every team which is emerging as a contender or is part of that club, already has at least one speedster to bolster them on. And please stop saying that it is the dead pitches which hamper their chances of finding one. Look at Pakistan, the pitches there are as lifeless, if not more, than the ones we see in India.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 18:10 GMT)

what? why Saha if parthiv is playing brilliant. I think selectors should've choosed 1 more fast bowler, one of sreesant, rp singh, ifran pathan or other youngster to get oz's condition experience

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 18:08 GMT)

Maybe India should have gone for one more left hand batsman...Gambhir is d only one in d side....Maybe Raina in for Rohit...(since Yuvi is not fit)...

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 18:03 GMT)

yuvraj has done a lot for India team. there were times when he had won the matches for India. i don't say he deserve a spot in 11 but definitely in first 16. I never seen rohit played a match winning inning for India. selectors are selecting couple of players based on domestic form. Yuvraj didn't play any domestic. people says yuvraj has given a lot of chances, how about rohit he is playing for Indian team from last 5-6 years and never seen him making vital contribution in the team. the only reason he was in and out because he never played well. hopefully he will be picked for odi's.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 18:03 GMT)

what happened to cheteshwar Pujara? If he is not injured, he should have been in the squad

Posted by big_al_81 on (November 26, 2011, 18:02 GMT)

I think it looks like they've picked the best side they could but I'm afraid I can't see any reasons for Kris Srikkanth's confidence. To be fair of course, he has to say that, it's his job! The players aren't 'in form' at serious Test level because they've been playing a very weak Test team in home conditions. I don't fancy their chances against the Aussies one bit. Especially as they may STILL have the sideshow of SRT's 100th century - couldn't we just enjoy the fact he has 99 centuries? Even if he never gets it it's already an extraordinary achievement. The greatest of all time (Bradman imo) didn't get the 4 runs he needed to average 100 for his career but it's hardly diminished his legacy...

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 17:59 GMT)

I think the selectors have done an excellent job. It requires guts to drop Harbhajan for the Australian tour and i feel the selectors have gone based on merit & not based on past performances. Harbhajan coming back to the team is not easy & he is learning the hard way because he thought his place in the team is taken for granted.

Posted by 2.14istherunrate on (November 26, 2011, 17:55 GMT)

Why did Kumar not figure against WI? Usually players gety dropped for being rubbish but he was dropped for being good. No-one clobbered him in UK. anyway at least he gets the nod here.

Posted by givenUP on (November 26, 2011, 17:51 GMT)

I don't understand why Yuvraj is dropped from the squad. He won India the WC and this is what he gets back. A chance to prove himself in two tests after so many years. Other selection that bothers me is that of Saha. I hope he gets a chance to play in Australia so that everyone gets to see his talent(or absence of it). Poor Parthiv is much better option for a second wicket keeper. Bhaji could have been very handy against Aussies but hard luck as all other bowlers performed really well in the west indies series. Though he should be called if Zaheer is unfit.

Posted by TRAM on (November 26, 2011, 17:45 GMT)

@Ananya Sethuraman, Let me guess. Either your age must be 150 years or you must have been living with your grand parents from the childhood and completely brain-washed with caste feelings. Time has changed friend. Generations back Indians have erased their Caste/religion differences and are living united now. You better change your mindset.

Posted by bouncer3459 on (November 26, 2011, 17:36 GMT)

with this bowling attack India will trouble even getting 10 wickets in the match. it will all depend on how good india bats, australian wickets are not very conducive to medium fast bowling and finger spinners.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 17:35 GMT)

What is Rohit Sharma doing there? He is meant for playing few balls in Twenty twenty cricket only. He doesn't look like a player to be in the side having the greats of tendulkar, dravid and Sehwag. And Thanks for teaching Harbhajan a lesson this time as it is still late.

Posted by Aswin160294 on (November 26, 2011, 17:34 GMT)

I think it is a good balanced side excepting the selection of Wriddiman saha......Dinesh karthik was always a better choice as his wicket keeping was terrific in ranji and also he has got good experience as a batsman.......

Posted by analyseabhishek on (November 26, 2011, 17:03 GMT)

This looks like the best possible team at the moment- but Indian opening pair is a bit soft primarily due to the slump Gautam Gambhir is suffering from in test cricket. His dismissal today was a disgrace and Jeff Dujon pointed out that he will have a difficult time in Australia if he doesnt correct his attitude wide outside off stump

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 16:47 GMT)

I am again disappointed to see Wriddhiman Saha in the team. The rest of the members were pretty obvious. Again, dropping Harbhajan is encouraging, and highlights the fact that the aggression and past-glory without present performance will not buy you a seat in the team.

A good news for Mumbai Cricket as after a very long time four players from Mumbai-Sachin, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane & Zaheer Khan have made it in the Indian team.Keep it up guys. Surya Yadav looks to be the next Mumbaikar likely to knock at the national team's door sooner than later.

Yuvraj made 84 when we chased down 387 (No one remebers that) , he was not in side today we have not won. We wouldn't have won T20 WC, 2011 ODI WC and Ntawest series, Champions Trophy and List Goes On. This country can only Praise Tendulkar blindly while real Heroes Like Yuvraj singh are always taken for granted

Gud Selection.............had given chance to the best possible talent available in country........................gud mix of maturity and youth.....well balanced on all fronts...but necessary to have the assurity of Zaheer's fitness bfore taking him in d squad

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 16:23 GMT)

Excellent squad... but would have preffered to see parthiv Patel instead of Wriddhiman Saha. if you check their Ranji perfomances parthiv is a better batsmen, wicketkeeper and he has already got experience in Aussie conditions. Young pool of batsmen is a brave decision. if tested Virat, Rohit and Ajhinkya will try to give their 100% as they want to invest their place in the squad.will be pleased to see young guns performing upto teir mettle. Good young fast bowling pool.... and pragyan Ojha and Ashwin are going to prove they are better choices than Harbhajan.... Yuvi has himself opted out by saying that he is not 100% fit so he is not selected... It's maybe too early too say anything but as an Indian i would hope of an Indian win over Australia.....

Posted by itsthewayuplay on (November 26, 2011, 16:14 GMT)

The squad needs a couple of more players and I would have included Raina despite the Eng test series and Jaffer instead of Gambhir. The selection of Saha makes no sense as he hasn't played in a recent test or ODI series and is not what you call a safe pair of hands behind the stumps. Parthiv and or Kathik would have been more logical. It'll be interesting to see how Aaron and Yadav go. More interested to see how all players other than the Big 3 adjust to the conditions. I'm not expecting a series win but I do expect batsmen to apply themsleves and the bowlers to be be disciplined when the going gets tough. This series is more about the performances than the results and the transition when the Big 3 eventually retire.

Posted by khanc on (November 26, 2011, 16:13 GMT)

Not a big criticisim since they are interchangeable, but Raina should have been taken over Kohli. True he failed in England, but Kohli is no better at foreign conditions and I believe Raina is mentally stronger so is more likely to improve his game.

Posted by hhillbumper on (November 26, 2011, 16:10 GMT)

Doesn't matter who you pick you cant play on anything with a modicum of bounce.get your excuses ready now.Can I suggest IPL,conspiracy theories and anything else to explain the fact that away from the roads you call wickets you just can't play pace and bounce.Bet Cummins can't wait to greet the batsmen. Good luck. You are going to need it!!!

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 16:02 GMT)

Excellent team selection, there was no point in selecting Bhajji at this stage. Ashwin has sealed his spot as 1st choice spinner. India are likely to play 3 seamers in Aus. It could be the last time the trio of Dravid, Laxman and Tendulkar play together. India do need them to play on this tour. But after this tour it is time to phase them out one by one.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 16:01 GMT)

the best team one could select....i opt ojha instead of ashwin if there is only one chance for spinners...ashwin can't spin in aussie pitches...vvs should play his best there again...

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 15:59 GMT)

good selection overall...........Ashwin ,Ojha did well against WI... Wriddhiman Saha's selection was g8t decision too.we can't take chance against OZ's

Posted by Vishal_07 on (November 26, 2011, 15:42 GMT)

Not a bad selection overall, one could make arguments against Saha but then Patel hasn't done that well anyways. Time to groom another wicketkeeper, may be.

Why not Parthiv in place in Saha ?

@Afridipak Cool Brother! Why do want us to lose? Let the better team win dear! And Pakistan played great cricket against srilanka...Best of luck for pakistan crick

And this team selection was done today, but Harsha hit bull's eye yesterday itself....his list was exactly the same...

Let the injured aussie players recover soon for the India series. would be interesting challenge then !

Last but not the least ,as Laxman said that day, this Windies team is really good, but underrated...Sammy is a cute captain and his boys really talented...just need more galvanizing from a better coach

Posted by earli on (November 26, 2011, 15:35 GMT)

India better make sure their fast bowlers are fit to play all the test because you are not going to get spin friendly slow wickets in Australia.

Its gonna be an opportunity of a life time for praveen kumar... He's good in conditions like australia or england where the ball swings a lot.. Its a shame that one of ashwin or ojha can only play coz they both did well in the west indies series... Overall it is a good team.. Time to retrospect for bhajji... He has nothing going on his side now and he needs to go back to basics.. It would be nice if he has a chat with Kumble coz kumble had been in situations like this umpteen number of times and had come back strongly each time..

Posted by HarishVS on (November 26, 2011, 15:12 GMT)

Kudos for Krishnamachari Srikkanth and his team of selectors! The selection has been very thoughtful and based on merits, current form/performance and an eye on future. They have included Rohit Sharma which is a great pick, though he may not get to play any Tests. He has been included to gain experience while Kohli is going to be No.6 bat in the playing 11. Anyway, it is not going to be too long before Rohit will start to play in white colours for India! Parthiv Patel is not a very good keeper and makes a sorry figure very often. For ODI version he may be ok, though the continuous lapses he is going to make will be covered up by our strong batting lineup that includes all in-form batters. Saha is the right selection. Thanking again the selectors for not subcribing themselves to the Harbajan skin theory. Ravi Shashtri is a very shrewd thinker of the game and most of the times he gets it right. But this time his voice just turned out to be a wasteful noise though!

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 15:04 GMT)

Fair.. the only guy I think wrongly missing out is Parthiv Patel ! Certainly better bat... also a reserve opener if Sehwag or Gauti miss out

Posted by Arok on (November 26, 2011, 14:54 GMT)

Oh Rainaaaaaaaa..we miss u very badly...paarthiv...we miss u too....anyway this Indian team looks very strong to compete with the aussies.. In ODIs Raina will be there to tear the aussie attack..

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 14:49 GMT)

I don't know why selected Saha....Raina was better choice...even tho he didn't perform that well in england...he is way better than Saha

very good selection, u cant ask for more

Posted by awalia on (November 26, 2011, 14:45 GMT)

Its Bhajji's fortune that he is not been picked. I doubt that Ojha or Ashwin will make any impact, performance against west indies on indian tracks does not matter,Australia is a different ball game, i am not worried for the indian bowlers, i am more worried for indian batsman, facing the "NEW TERROR" Cummings. This bowling attack does not bowl out Australia twice. Wait for a another white wash.

Posted by Prakmca on (November 26, 2011, 14:44 GMT)

Good to see, Harbajan was not considered. No one get selected based on past records or on the basis of seniority. he was a real bottleneck one time. Even if Harbajan is getting selected in future that should not be based on one or two performances, unless or otherwise he shows consistent performance in domestic level, he should not be considered. Time to groom, youngsters.

interesting team. I would like to have seen Pujara in the squad just like they have zaheer testing out fitness. Pujara is more of a Dravid style technically good player. Anyways, seems a good squad on the board, will have to wait and watch happens. @wacco: dream on brother, one lost series isn't the end of the world.

Posted by rajmania09 on (November 26, 2011, 14:37 GMT)

It's high time harbhajan singh retire from all forms of cricket except IPL to earn his high class living. He has lost the steam and trajectory to fox a batsman. He is short of ideas or he has exhausted everything he can think off.He was a good bowler till 2009 but after that.. Test batsman across the world have soughted him out.Rahul sharma should be given a chance if and when an off spinner is thought off.He is tall and batsman outside the sub-continent will find him difficult to pick his lenght.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 14:34 GMT)

It will be difficult to say anything about composition especially after India's failure in England. However, newcomers like Ashwin and Ojha may make a difference. One thing still eludes India team i.e.lack of proper allrounder and replacement for the older players.

Please Raina lovers, watch videos of him cowering against the short ball in England. Also note that Rohit & Rahane have long since averaged 63+ in first class and done well against quality bowling in ODI on FOREIGN wickets. Raina cant even average 50 in domestic cricket. The real question is how did he & yuvraj get ahead of the queue and ahead of Mukund, Kohli, Rahane and Rohit? Great selelction except that Dinesh K for Saha would have made it perfect. Irfan P should go if ZK is not fit and Jadeja should be on standby for any batsman or spin bowler injury.

@MaruthuDelft - Ashwin did not goof it up. In fact, he did a right thing by making sure that the match goes to the last ball so that he can take the risk. Imagine Ashwin going for a big shot in the 5th ball and ojha getting out in the next ball. India would have lost the match. He made sure that either we win or the match ends in a draw. The only thing was he did not try run fast and put the pressure on the fielder. I think he has a wise head on his shoulders. As far as the selection is concerned, this is the perfect team the selectors can come up with. Well done guys. Saha has never been given a chance. He has always been in the 15 or 16. He is a very good wicket keeper and a fighter.

Good selection but an easy selection. Harbhajan is a fierce competitor, regadless of what he did in the seamer friendly England. However, Ashwin is the future of the Indian cricket and he needs to be included. Ojha also is performing equal to Ashwin. So, Harbhajan has to miss out. Sreesanth should get his selection if Zaheer fails the fitness. Only questionable selection is Saha. I still beleive Karthik is a gun and should be included in the side. But, I may be biased because I saw his T20 performance agains South Africa when the T20 was new to India and it was Karthik who started it all. My arguement is that it takes a lot of individuality and courage to do so. I support the players who stand up to the opposition and face it out with confidence. Karthik and Harbhahan belongs to that category. I don't know if Saha belongs in that category.

Raina should be selected. he is a class player, and can fit in any format of cricket. we need to give him some chances to prove his ability to play test matches. he is better than many old players in the team.

For a change, I agree with what Srikkant says: "The team selects itself". What he DOES, I tend to agree most of the times; the problem, often, is on what he says. I wonder, whether all those who are not playing the ODI series against Windies (including the seniors) could be sent to Australia well in advance? BCCI, with all its clout; can they not arrange a few additional matches for them on a few fast Aussie pitches? Or, could they be accommodated in different Aussie teams in the Sheffield Shield matches -- the way, once in a while we used to find and get short period opportunities in English County teams?

The squard is looking quite good & balanced but i can't understand the selector's two way approach that on one occassion they are giving Ahwin & Ojha the reward for their terrific performance in the recently concluded series & on other side they are playing with the confidence & emotions of Veteran Yuvraj by axing him frm IIIrd Test & not including him in Squard fr Australian Tour. Hw can performance of 2 tests judge the calibre of any player & specially of sumone like Yuvi who has proved himself on n no. of occassions for INDIA having more than 10000 International runs under his belt, talking abt Australian conditions Yuvi culd hav been ideal man at no.6 becoz frstly he is left hander secndly he cn bowl sum gud left arm offies against australian right handers becoz aftr this series Ashwin hs proved his utility as a typical lower order batsman so he will be edged over Ojha & he is right arm offie, another offie in the line up is Sehwag who is also righty so he culd b the best choice.@@

There is lot of transparency shown in the selection by relying more on good performances than past glories. The top 7 in the batting lineup played in mumbai test will be starting as frontrunners to be picked for the boxing day match. Would like to see Zaheer, Ashwin, Praveen too in the starting eleven because of variety in their skills. It should be a real toss up between Umesh and Ishant for the Jack(s)pot and it would be hard on the one missing out.

Harbhajan was living on a borrowed time for a while, in my opinion he should have been axed even earlier. For a while he has been a mere shadow of his old self. What concerns me most is that Harbhajan has not made enough efforts to change and improve as his form has declined. I compare him to a Greame Swann who puts in so much into his bowling; Harbhajan has been doing the same old thing expecting different results. It is unfair to drop Ojha and Ashwin who have performed so well and select Harbhajan who has shown no merit for selection; I also disagree that a player should be selected for his ability to "get under the skiin" of the opposition; it's a negative view to take. When champions get down they fight and comeback; Harbhajan can't even handle the domestic cricket pressure and has gone for so many runs. In my opinion he is done, thank you for your contribution, find things that make you happy off the cricket field,

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 13:21 GMT)

All is fine except the selection of Saha . I don't understand what he has don'e to merit. his inclusion. GOK . All the best for a series win for india

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 13:19 GMT)

The team looks balanced but only one caveat - Suresh Rains will be badly missed. A good bat, an excellent fielder, an effective part-time bowler. Harbhajan will not be missed and of course, the new fast bowlers should be given more chances. Why do you want to take someone who is yet to prove his fitness? Kris's remarks are bit out of line here about team selecting itself.

Posted by manj24 on (November 26, 2011, 13:15 GMT)

the selectors should give yuvraj one more chance.. because australia have fast pitches and yuvraj plays well in fast pitches, and he is very experience cricketer. the selectors should realize that the team will not be playing in their home ground.. so the more experienced cricketer should be playing. Yuvi is many times better than rohit, rohit has very few batting average compared to yuvi.for me yuvi should be in the squad!!

Yes, this is a very balanced side with all well playing and young XI. Everyone in form now. Hope we can win the long awaiting Australian series.. BEST OF LUCK TEAM INDIA...

Posted by rkrdxb on (November 26, 2011, 13:11 GMT)

While all the focus has been on Harbajan, spare a thought for Abinav Mukund! We should have a good third opener in the side so that we don't have to now and then ask Rahul Dravid to open and also disturb the entire line up every time an opener gets injured. Otherwise seems to be a balanced side and on expected lines expect for Rahane...hope he grabs the opportunity with both hands. Good luck to the team.

very good selection I guess... its based on form and performance... I don't understand why Bhajji got so many chances in the first place!! he should've been out of the team a long time ago...

Oh What a squad.i think sachin will play under preasure with his 100 runs victim.but i think suresh raina should included the squad.ishant sharma can play well because last time in aussie sharma done very well

Posted by Pandyan on (November 26, 2011, 12:54 GMT)

Excellent selection by the selectors this time entirely satisfied with the selection of the squad hope we have zaheer in full fitness and travels with the team on time and there is no point in talking harbhajans exclusion from the team here we should actually look into the current form he is in, if he cant even take a couple of wickets even in Ranji matches how can anyone be selected purely because of his past performances even his past performance for last year or so is not even worth speaking of his performances. The only other selection is of the reserve wicket keeper we should have gone with Parthiv Patel instead of Saha as pathiv can decently bat and keep wickets at any number in the batting order but actually satisfied with the way selectors have gone with the selection hope this time also we find some success and more heroes as we had Ishant last time in the form of Umesh and Varun all the best Team.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 12:53 GMT)

selection ofteam is full with experience and youth. with agressive intution dhoni can be little more agressive in arranging field placements and can change regularly as done by australians to disturb the rhytem and concentration of batsmen jagannathan

not z khan rolling up late again, with fittness doubts hanging over his head. if not fit at start of tour send him back home. to have, will he or wont he, as each tests passes did they not learn their lessons from the debacle in the uk. dpk

Posted by NRI- on (November 26, 2011, 12:48 GMT)

Manju, why on earth would you select Raina ahead of Rohit? Rohit ALONE played well against the WI quicks in WI even as kohli, Raina, Mukund, Badri and Murali Vijay flopped. Rohit has the technique. Rahul Gokhale, Parthiv? Why? Of Parthiv, Saha and Dinesh Karthik, DK is by far the best batsman in all forms of the game and his record in tests, first class cricket and ODIs is superior to Parthiv & Saha. Saha has the reputation of being the best keeper of the three. So Parthiv is neither the best keeper nor the best batsman of the second wikkies. The only unlucky guy is Jadeja - he could easily be selected today by England, SA, NZ, WI or even Australia as their no 6 batsman who can bowl spin and be the fifth or sixth bowler. His time will come. India's 7 bowlers contain 4 who didnt play against England plus ZK (if fit). That's good because Aaron & Yadav should take the new ball.

nice squad selection.but india search good fast bowler soon, it is good for future india cricket carrier senior players are try to form the best fast bowlers

yuvi or raina shud hv been selctd instead of rohit...sharma is not a gud choice... n will really miss bhajiii....evn the ausis will...n dun noe wt da selctors wer thnking as dey pickd saha instead of parthiv..he shud hv been pickd as da odr keeper..hez olso in v.gud form...n far more experiencd den saha...

donno on what basis wridiman saha gets selected. bhajji deserves a place against his fav opponents the aussies. common on what basis does saha gets selected everytime as a second keeper in the team. apart from this selection the team is good

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 12:36 GMT)

Inclusion of Zaheer khan is good option but he must have to be fit till the time team reach in Australia.4 Test match will be really a good test for India after winning 2-0 against W Indies.Top winter season will be most important factor for the Indians.Difficult to predict who will win the series but still india is 2 rank ahead than ausies.

good selection........all the best to team India....

Posted by scorpionsXI on (November 26, 2011, 12:33 GMT)

@wkhan111: Harbhajan is a spinner, not a fast bowler. He doesn't require pace. Although the bounce is something he could have used in Australia ,but his previous tour suggests otherwise.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 12:32 GMT)

@nagaraj gundappa.....i agree with u raina is a much better option dan rohit...rohits fitness is still quessionable...havin a player of rainas calibre would have been beneficiary for us.....gud to see ojha nd ashwin in d ranks...instead of saha they couldhave gone for parthiv or even pujara if they beleive in dhonis fitness...ZAKS availability will decide who has dedge

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 12:31 GMT)

No Yuvraj...No Suresh Raina....How gonna dey win?? Rohit Sharma hasn't been in the team on a regular basis...last time he impressed on the Aus Tour but after that he has failed to cash on the opportunities... No Zaheer in Aus will mean no prominent wicket taking fast bowler frm side... God Bless India on this tour....

@mikey76 : Who is this Swan ,what has he done outside England,He failed miserably in India where Ohja and Ashwin took 42 out of sixty wickets. So they are not comparable to Swan at all .The real class of Swan will come out in his sub continent tour when Pakistan,Srilanka and India will take care of him.

Posted by theswami on (November 26, 2011, 12:30 GMT)

My playing 11 for the Oz Tests .... Sehwag, Gambhir, Dravid, Tendulkar,Laxman, Dhoni, Ashwin, Praveen, Zaheer, Ishant, Ojha(Sydney)/Yadav(Perth)/toss up between the 2 in Adelaide depending on the pitch/ Rahane if our batsmen are falling in heaps in the early matches, Aaron (if Zaheer is unfit).

L.Balaji would be my replacement in the squad for Zaheer.

Posted by ssenthil on (November 26, 2011, 12:30 GMT)

@Tim40621, H Singh record in Australia is 73 Avg and 126 SR to pick a Wicket each and you still want to take him to Australia, even in the last tour he picked his wickets at 61 Avg. I m not saying Ashwin is going to be a great success as every finger spinners - off spinners suffered in Australia, with Sawnn as well going for 39 per wicket.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 12:27 GMT)

people clamoring for Patel do they know he was indian goal keeper for a long time. Even in recent WI tour where he played his keeping was not all that great. Saha is a better keeper and does bat decent. Saha is better suited for the longer version and not patel... I think the selectors have done an excellent job and glad to see Praveen back. In a three pace attack Zak, Praveen and Ishant for the first test after that if anyone is out yadav should get in.....best ofl luck team India

Posted by Sarangarajan on (November 26, 2011, 12:27 GMT)

Am glad that the selectors have left out Harbhajan from the squad for Australia purely on cricketing merits. He was so pathetic in the last two seasons with the ball though his batting had improved. The talk that he should have been selected because of his experience in Aussie condtions doesnot hold any water. That way Viv Richrads should have been in the present Windies team in India for his huge experience. It is going to be very tough for Bajji to stage a come back. Rest of the team selection is on expected lines.Sincerely wish that Zaheer gets fit in time for the tour as he would be the best bet against Aussies if fully fit.All said and done, best wishes for team which is very balanced.

VERY GOOD INDIAN SIDE. SELECTORS HAVE MADE A RIGHT SELECTION FOR AUSTRALIAN TOUR! I FEEL SORRY FOR BAJJI BUT HIS POOR FORM CANT HELP HIM. NOW INDIA HAS VERY GOOD BALANCED AND FRESH BOWLING ATTACK!! ZAHEER WILL DEFNITELY RETURN TO THE SIDE AND HE SHOULD PLAY THE WHOLE SERIES IN AUSTRALIA WHICH HE HAD NOT DONE BEFORE. REGARDING NO.6 POSITION KOHLI WILL BE THE AUTOMATIC SELECTION FOR FIRST 2 TESTS OR ELSE RAHOT SHARMA SHOULD BE PICKED FOR THE 3RD TEST..................ANYWAYS SUPERB TEAM GOOD LUCK INDIA!!!

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 12:20 GMT)

I seriously dont understand why people are cribbing about Harbhajan. Look at harbhajan's record in the last tour of australia. He averages 62 with the ball. Bhajji has been out of form for the last 4 years or so. Its good we try new spinners. And for the second wicket keeper its doesnt add any value as dhoni gonna play all the macthes only if dhoni gets injured we will see second WK playing the match. We cant select 3 spinners for an aus series in aus (except for sydney none of the pitches assist spin) so a person with common sense would pick 2 spinners. Bhajji averages 100 in ranji macthes now and he has never perfomed well in aus pitches. Raina has been tried and he hasnt performed well to his potential. Again Rahane wont make to the squad unless sehwag or gambhir is injured. So we have Rohit or Virat playing for 6th slot

Posted by sankar8000 on (November 26, 2011, 12:17 GMT)

Fair selection! This Indian squad will give tough fight to aussies..... cannot wait for the moments......

Posted by Rangarajan_Rajamani_Chennai on (November 26, 2011, 12:14 GMT)

I dont know which knowledgeable cricket follower thinks Bhajji has been excellent in Australia . . . 9 wkts from 4 matches is indeed very "menacing" and "threatening" . . . If you think Bhajji should be chosen to just to get under the skin of australia, we can take a halloween doll and frighten aussies instead!!! Ashwin/Ohja MAY NOT click but Bhajji will DEFINITELY Not click!!!

Posted by lolrocket on (November 26, 2011, 12:13 GMT)

As an Australian having seen Harbhajan trouble us so many times, it's great seeing Ashwin and Ohja picked

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 12:12 GMT)

jeez why on earth does saha get selected everytime? take parthiv instead, hes in great batting form.

the selectors are showing faith in rohit sharma. hope he lives up to his promise.

Posted by cricketisagame on (November 26, 2011, 12:09 GMT)

@ Vickay_91, I think you have to recall the last Indian tour of Down Under to compare the sides. Aus was stronger than the present team and India indeed technically won the series barring that famous Sydney test. So, keep your fingers crossed rather than giving bold predictions, I know we do not have Kumble this time but we do have promising spinners.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 12:08 GMT)

Raina should be selected instead of Rohit, bcoz rohit not a international level player,he is only suited for domestic matches.only one left handed batsmen in the team, this is Mindless selection,Raina we miss you a lotttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt, Get ready for Australia, bcoz one lazy player in team he will get injured even Practice match(Rohit),dont waste a time practice hard and hard you will get reward(Australian tour).

Posted by Wacco on (November 26, 2011, 12:05 GMT)

....well cummins and patt are waiting for the oldies. No hope for the hyped batters, except sehwag in one or two innings. Kokli and rohit are the ones to look out for but being India and more focus on the records, the young ones wont get in...though good luck and have fun. could be 2-0 not 4-0 as against the poms.

Posted by SamimArif on (November 26, 2011, 12:02 GMT)

Not picking Harbhajan is strange, for he has a lot of experience abroad too which lacks in the selected two spinners. Aus is not going to prepare spinning pitches at all, so experience is more needed than spin down under. I think India have missed the trick and that's gonna cost them badly when Watto, Punter and Clarke smash Ashwin and Ojha around the park.

Posted by cricindia4life on (November 26, 2011, 12:02 GMT)

Excellent selection. Dropping harbhajan based on his continued poor performance even in Ranji games is the right decision. For all those complaining about Saha, I don't think he was selected for his batting. He's purely a wicket keeper. Saha isn't half a batsman that Parthiv and Dinesh are, but those two make too many costly mistakes while keeping. As for Pujara, he wasn't match fit until recently and hasn't really proven himself with the bat since. He's definitely marked as one for the future but the timing just wasn't right this time. Mukund had his chances in England and wasn't able to capitalize; hence the selection of Rahane. Overall, a perfectly balanced team. Well done selection committee!

Posted by joshmachine on (November 26, 2011, 11:59 GMT)

I will say a very balanced side and all the selections are backed with some good past and current performences. But IRFAN PATHAN instead of VARUN AARON would have been a much more balanced selection. Irfan with his batting abilities and left arm swing definitely add some variation in the pace bowling department. Selectors should not forget dat Zaheer is still not fully fit and rest of all the pacers are right handed. Also irfan has experience of playing in australia dont forgot the perth test which india won in the last tour of australia , Irfan did show his allrounder abilities in dat test.

Posted by MaruthuDelft on (November 26, 2011, 11:58 GMT)

Now that is Ashwin for you; 2 runs in 2 balls; he could not make it; why? Well he never gave the impression that young vibrant blood running in his veins. It is easy to pretend courageous or confident. Ashwin is a pretender. Reality is he would do better cooking idly saambar for his wife.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 11:57 GMT)

Good selection. No point harping on Harbhajan. Time to move on. Same applies to Zaheer if he limps off in Australia.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 11:56 GMT)

I am happy...We dont need bhajji for now... He has been dropped because of poor form...FAIR enough.!!! Selectors have done the right thing in ignoring Raina & Yuvraj. These 2 JUST CANNOT BAT on the swinging/bouncing pitches in Australia. They are very good ODI batsmen and will be called in for the ODI series featuring SL and Aus after the test series. Yuvi and Raina are just not test material.

Aus will slaughter them with this side big names on the piece of paper as usuall, India couldn't even control WI the way they should, WI are only a club level team

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 11:49 GMT)

I think the selectors have gone on current form and needs to balance youth with experience. So bringing in new faces will help the future of Indian cricket on the world. New faces need to adapt to all types of conditions.

Posted by wnwn on (November 26, 2011, 11:47 GMT)

Harbhajan Singh should retire from international cricket. He no longer has the pace or variation in his bowling to trouble good batsmen and is very predictable.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 11:41 GMT)

@Jatt799, Thank god, guys like you are not in selection team or we would have team based on super stars rather than team based on current performance.

Time to move on, whoever will play well, gets a place in the team.

Nice quote by Shrikant : "Unfortunately, we cannot help it as the team selects itself"

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 11:40 GMT)

Well....it is a fair team selection....Harbhajan isn't doing too well in domestic circuit and he needs to work back on his basics..Umesh Yadav will be a serious bowler to watch for and if Ishant gets unfit, I'm sure he will be the first pick...And with some reverse swing around he can cause some serious damage with his unusual easy to go action which keeps him unjury free mostly.. Irfan is amongst a lot of wickets in past few matches but I don't think it is appropriate to get him back in the team so early..but after a season or so..he will be a serious consideration..and India's batting can outclass australia's batting if they keep running hard between the wickets as the boundaries are too long and if they crave for 4s...it will be difficult to do well specially at MCG..and Sachin's ton...well it will come because when he got stuck in the 90s last time..it was this tour where he got his hundred...hope for the best of both the teams and a good exciting sport

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 11:34 GMT)

Saha Doesn't deserve to be in that squad......... Parthiv Patel Should Be der

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 11:33 GMT)

But Why Rohit Sharma instead of Suresh Raina? Raina has good domestic performance under his belt and so is Rohit. But, Raina has done well when given chance in tests. Why drop him now to include Rohit? Can anybody explain?

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 11:31 GMT)

Finally Happy harbhajan is not in the team...thank god.. I would prefer murali vijay as reserve opener instead of rahane... vijay plays test cricket very well and rest team is good enough

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 11:16 GMT)

Why selecting Zaheer though he is not fully fit and leaving out Irfan Pathan though he is doing well recently? Is he not as good as Umesh or Aroan or fhat matter, even Ishant? Is Dinesh Karthik not better than Saha? These decisions are hard to explain. Clearly Srikkanth is having vengence against Irfan Pathan, and as long as he is the chairman of selection committee, Irfan Pathan may have to forget his come-back.

well a very good selection.......and its good to see wrdhimaan saha getting the nod being a better keeper......but zaheer khan will be needed badly......hope he gets through the fitness test....and it's a bit tricky fact abt the bhajji issue...not too sure about his exclusion bcoz the experience and good performances against australlia cant be counted off...though both ashwin and ojha have been great...... but in a different condition there lack of experience might be a drawback... still hoping for the best and wishin team india best of luck......

ps- i would have also chosen parthiv ahead of saha as wk back up

Posted by buntyj on (November 26, 2011, 10:27 GMT)

overall good team though i would ve picked rahul sharma ahead of rohit sharma in the 17- not his fault he wasnt tried in this series and could be useful in 2nd innings (bit of spin with unven bounce) last 2 days at sydney, adelaide; is irfan the back up to zak? pujara is unlucky as hes not yet back from injury; i also feel that today as distinct from 4 years ago jadeja is a better prospect than rohit; apart from zak one isnt sure if ishant will last the tour; another useful swing bowler is abu nechem from assam. alot will depend if indian batsmen can score vs cummins; oz batting is a bit frail compared to past n not sure if lyon will be too effective vs india; but if fit they can field a strong pace attack especially with cummins. how many runs india score will likely decide the series.

India will lose how come they drop bajji ashwin and ojha not good against aussie WI is weak side any low class bolwer can take wicket against them stupid selection aus will be happy

i think aussies will beat indians quite easily coz the way aussies are rising up once agian it wont be easy fo indians to control them at their own backyard.. indians can only be tough in india.. and another thing if there r some good sporting pitches like typical australian pitch then u can expect so many big scores from aussies in this series.. go aussies go

@vikash choubey...Do you know what wicket-keeping is?

Posted by Vickay_91 on (November 26, 2011, 10:21 GMT)

It will be a good competition but all you indians must agree that indian fast bowling attck is not strong enough to challenge australia.. the way aussies played agianst proteas it is not a good sign fo indian weak pace attack.. and there is not too much room for spin bowling in australia so overall aussies are favourite:)

@mikey if u watched england series u would know talent wasnt the problem, fitness, selection were in each match 2-3 players got injured we batted w/o our openers (gambhir played with injury) we played with 2.5 bowlers in 2 matches.. if we play with fit team australia will lose indians can easily outclass them batting is not problem bowing ishant seems to be bowling well,we have attacking spinner this time around, young guys are bowling their heart out and trust me this bowling can surprise few of ur overconfident batters ;)

Posted by venkatesh018 on (November 26, 2011, 10:10 GMT)

Varun Aaron is really lucky to be in the squad. Laxmipathy Balaji should have been selected instead( Balaji bowls his heart out on lifeless Ranji pitches, swings the ball both ways and picks wickets of both the top and the bottom order and yet he is vastly under-rated) .Also, Abhinav Mukund is a much better prospect than Rahane.

selectors could just a little better instead of rohit there should be pujara. whose first class cricket average is over 60 . & he play a very good knock against aussies as we touring aussies. on the other hand look at rohit since how many years he trying to establish himself as a odi & 20-20 cricketer . but is he really establish himself in these formats so now selectors want to give him straight entry in to test cricket wow what a stupidity.out of parthiv, karthik, & saha i think karthik is best for test cricket. look at 3 guys stat

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 9:58 GMT)

if u can have parthiv in one day team why not in test matches his form is very good in domestic and he is best behind wickets and also have experience traveling down under

Posted by LillianThomson on (November 26, 2011, 9:50 GMT)

India desperately needed two things to survive in Australia. One was three First Class matches on quick Test wickets - instead they are playing two joke matches in Canberra. Secondly they needed Irfan Pathan to bat at eight and bowl 15 overs per innings to keep Ishant fresh as a strike bowler. This series is going to be Australia v Sehwag and Ishant, and I'd bet my house on the Aussies winning 4-0 unless rain saves India.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 9:47 GMT)

A balanced team. I hope a series win there would be icing on the cake for our team after World cup triumph.Even the three's (Sach,VVS,Rahul) would be hoping to add some more glitter to their illustrious career with a series win down under. Would have preferred Parthiv instead of Saha... positives being he can open innings and had been there before.Even scored some healthy runs in Ranji league games. All the very best guys.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 9:46 GMT)

what has saha done to merit a place in the team? would the selectors care to explain?

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 9:43 GMT)

Wriddhiman saha as reserve wicket keeper is the only wrong choice....... Parthiv patel definately makes a cut above saha.......... has been performing well and has infact toured Australia with team in 2003 with decent performances and that experience could have been really handy for the team as well.......

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 9:43 GMT)

irfan pathan is useless.

Posted by Nicolas-Perera on (November 26, 2011, 9:39 GMT)

sachin pls retire, if he can't get 100 in this wicket, where else? u r luckey enough to be where u r.give the way to youngsters like rohit,a.mukund and pujara. 2nd inngs in mumbai showed how good player u r,truly worst than flat track bully.learn the art of batting from Kallis iam not saying it because of i am an indo-african.u r so luck 2 be in india so u could be carried by media.any where else in the world u would't have play any more than 25 test matches,or 100 ODIs .(except srilanka) all sachin fans wait and see he will play until next tour of Australia 2014. no matter what he in form or not he will continue to play and give it away for his son(may be ) tell how may time he won matches for his team! i would like 2 mix sreesant, irfan(ODIs) in tour of Australia.

Posted by naansari on (November 26, 2011, 9:37 GMT)

Very fair selection of players from the selectors and quite a bold move to drop Harbhajan Singh. Wish Zaheer Khan gets fully fit for this series...All the best India!!!

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 9:36 GMT)

saha is worst selection...... parthiv would be a good pick wit his current form for a reserve wicket keeper!!!

Posted by manisacumen on (November 26, 2011, 9:30 GMT)

Good selection except for one blunder - Saha. what did he do? Just shows quota system or nepotism. Other selections are ok. If zak backs out, then Sreeshanth or Mithun should be tried. Munaf and nehra are not bad, but they are liabilities on the field.

Feel sad for Yuvi. Wanted to see him badly for the aus tour and a lynchpin against that attack for me. He is only to blame; took it casually.

Posted by Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas_Atheist on (November 26, 2011, 9:27 GMT)

And yeah, Harbhajan Singh, thanks for the memories. Please don't come back.

Posted by sweetspot on (November 26, 2011, 9:23 GMT)

What is all this harping about Saha for? Yes, Parthiv is not a bad keeper at all, but if we're looking for a real gloveman with very good batting technique and temperament, then we need to look no further than Dinesh Karthik. I would not be surprised if Harbhajan Singh becomes the permanent captain of Mumbai Indians and Yuvraj Singh the star of Pune Warriors, well into the future. Of course I'd love to see them play for India, but who are they going to replace?

Posted by SaqlainHK on (November 26, 2011, 9:23 GMT)

it's good to keep away Harbhajan, rest is good

Posted by g.narsimha on (November 26, 2011, 9:21 GMT)

Selectors deserves aplouds for selecting best available talent but in place of SAHA either patel or kartiks could have been better options .Best of luck TEAM INDIA.

Posted by 007Pralay on (November 26, 2011, 9:21 GMT)

Yes this is a very good team,,thanks to Indian Selection Members you have done a very good job BRO !! Harbhajan and Irfan are UNUSABLE SCRAP now they had enough chance to prove them self,,See Irfan Pathan recently taken some wicket but my friends look the pitch closely there are a lot of grass on the pitch,,and he was bowling at 125-126 kmph speed,,ha ha ha i can bowl over 130kmph !! Happy to see Both Umesh and Aarun are there and also Ishant gaining his speed over 145,, And i would like to say that selectors have done terrific job by selecting W Saha,,Because In Australia when somebody like Umesh,Aarun & Ishant ll bowl around 145kmph on bouncy track, the keeper behind wicket ll have to taller otherwise all ball ll go over the head,,And W Saha is taller than Patel,,...BEST OF LUCK TEAM INDIA,,,

Posted by Satv007 on (November 26, 2011, 9:21 GMT)

Mr. Mikey...This was not the team which got defeated in Eng. We didn't have zaheer, sehwag and ghambir fully fit. harbhajan's performance was so bad that India could have lost to a county side. Now, this team is atleast fit with the help of NCA and the best possible team at this point. We have a great chance to beat aussies down under.

I guess nithy34 likes irfan so do i...bad luck lets see if he gets a chance in odi's.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 9:20 GMT)

The team selection is pretty good and kudos to Srikhanth for getting it right this time around...India does have the potential to beat Australia in Australia as they are themselves trying to find their own footing and are on an upward curve however India themselves are on an upward curve too and are definitely going to give Australia a run for their money. We got beaten badly by England in England whereas England beat Australia in Australia to win the Ashes so we definitely have a good shot at winning this series...We have the balanced bowlers for all kinds of conditions and the veterans Rahul and Sachin as the team backbone whom all other Indian batsmen will bat around. So optimists, relax, we are going to make life miserable for the Aussies

Posted by shivtaneja on (November 26, 2011, 9:20 GMT)

fine team hope india does well, bhajji should had been there bt im sure he would make a strong comeback...

Can't wait to see this side get hammered.

Posted by adyy0902 on (November 26, 2011, 9:16 GMT)

poor selection i must say, no left handed batsmen in team barring gambhir, they should have picked either of yuvi or raina instead of rohit sharma, ojha has no doubt done well here, but he is a bogey there, instead of him either rahul sharma or amit mishra should have been there, to add a variety in form of leg spin. if zak is fit then ok, otherwise irfan pathan should be there in the team plane to add a variety with left arm bowler and as bhajji is not there to have that all rounder spot filled. otherwise also he sholud have been there in the team instead of i think varun aaron or may be praveen kumar or they could have only 1 spinner in form of ashwin and ojha should have made way for him in team

Posted by cricketkumar on (November 26, 2011, 9:16 GMT)

why saha?? why not parthiv??

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 9:15 GMT)

I am fully satisfied with this squad and I really appreciate K. Shrikkanth for picking up such a balance side ahead of a tough tour of Australia. I pray for Zaheer to be fully fit in time and play in all 4 test matches. W. Saha deserve his place as well and this is a golden opportunity for him if he come into play. This side is chosen on the merits and hard work put in by each and every individual. Finally, we are happy to see that we are sending our best squad to the toughest tour of cricket in the world. All the individuals who deserve their places are in the flight to Australia......

Posted by reality_check27 on (November 26, 2011, 9:14 GMT)

mickey 76 india has not been beaten in india since 2004 now and australia have been beaten at home by england and south africa. and what is this about australia is getting better now they managed a draw in southafrica after a long time and they have not beaten india in last 6 test matches they have played and india have beaten them in 4 test matches and australia has just managed to beat srilanka unfortunately srilanka team is going through tough time so if you really look at that they are not getting any better. and about varon and umesh they ball at 145 kmph to 150 thats not medium pace anywhere in the world.and ashes has to be the most boring series now england couldn't win for 18 years and the way they destroyed australia in australia it seems like australia is not going to win for 18 years

Posted by A.Ak on (November 26, 2011, 9:13 GMT)

Srikanth has been brave through out. Like he did for WC. Good selection. very balanced indeed.

Posted by PPPandit on (November 26, 2011, 9:13 GMT)

why this Saha is in the team.......i dont understand. Patel would have been preferable. I have seen this Saha playing he doesnt fit to be in the team at all

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 9:09 GMT)

saha should be groomed...he averages more than 40 in both 4day n 1day format domestic odi ...parthiv does not have any idea how to play in the middle overs..cant play the long innings...irfan in place of praveen who is more a steady bowler..rest of the team is good

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 9:08 GMT)

MISSING RAINA VERY VERY SAD

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 9:08 GMT)

where is Cheteshwar Pujara he has done well in his short career, he should be selected ahead Rahane. resrt of the team is good.I think not selecting Pujara is worst decision.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 9:07 GMT)

in next 3 months,i predict the following rankings in tests....1.africa 2.australia 3.england(pak will bring them down).4.india(australia will bring them down).5.pak(england series will bring them slighly up)...and then in march, number 4 and 5 positions will be decided from series of pakistan and india.............

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 9:06 GMT)

hiii... its really a nice & balanced team. although, i would love to see jadeja as no. 7 batsman for india in tests, caz @adelede & sydney, its spin who matters a lot., so it could b a better chance for india to go with 5 batsman 1 wiketkeeper, 1genuiune allrounder & 3 pacers as well 1 spinner. but wen its not there... its a learning curve for the new players to learn for future..!!!! All the best!!!

Posted by switchgrind68 on (November 26, 2011, 9:05 GMT)

Completely agree with the selection. It's pretty rare that we, as common people would be satisfied after a selection meeting, especially ahead of an overseas tour. I also fee that Irfan Pathan should be the automatic choice if, God forbid, Zaheer Khan is not able to or gets injured during the tour. On current form and overall, it's a better squad than the last tour of Australia. All The Best to the Indian Team for their tour, and I really hope they get the Border-Gavaskar Trophy back to India.

Its worst leave Harbhajan, y we cant take 3 spinners and very worst not to pick Raina as he is an integral part of team

Posted by Behind_the_bowlers_arm on (November 26, 2011, 8:54 GMT)

He has been average and the new younger spinners have done the business. A no-brainer. The next thought has got to be life after Tendulkar, Dravid & Laxman. This is a big tour for the batsmen who are eyeing their spots long term. The evidence from the England tour is that some will be tested by the bouncing ball and quicker pitches.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 8:54 GMT)

nyc team....still youngsters shuld b given chance....a balanced side.....if zaheer is not fit nd right choice ll b IRFAN PATHAN.....:)

Posted by mere on (November 26, 2011, 8:53 GMT)

i think its good team but why saha has picked instead of parthiv who has done well in domestic and as well as in odis.

Posted by Ganes.V on (November 26, 2011, 8:52 GMT)

I would have loved to see Pujara also being tested in Australia. He plays short balls well as we saw him do against them in India. But he needs to be given more chances. He is definitely there in the team in future when the trio of SRT, RD and VVS retire. Rohit, Virat and Pujara would replace them. And Rahane for Sehwag in future. So this team looks good for now but also plan well to accomodate good batsmen who can be there for a better future for India. Pace bowling department seems to be sorted out now with Yadav and Aaron doing well in flat India pitches. I hope this india team does well there. Good to see that selectors getting over Bhaji. he was gven too many chances and he himself would agree to this. With many players knocking the doors players like yuvi and raina are also not in the team which is actually a very healthy sign. ALL the best Team India. Do well ..

you have one more month to start the series. so why did you announmce now?

Posted by Wiper_Warriors on (November 26, 2011, 8:48 GMT)

Why include Zaheer Khan, is he fully fit?..no point to include..either include Irfan or any other fit bowler..plus instead of rahane there should be Pujara in squad..feeling bad for harbhajan cause when last time india toured Aus..he was the center of attraction..why selectors are persistent with Saha..should include Naman Ojha / Dinesh Karthik..in team....

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 8:46 GMT)

Gud selection. Over all a balanced side...... I prefer parthiv insted of saha... Coz parthive had mr math experience and he done well in Aussie at his teen age... Over all it is a gud side and can demolish the kangaroooz.....

Posted by vammye on (November 26, 2011, 8:45 GMT)

Posted by Romenevans on (November 26, 2011, 8:43 GMT)

Perfect team! Great work selectors. All the media hype around Harbhajan was trying to emotionally blow down selectors over bhajji's inclusion. They finally acted like professionals, and all the fans will support them as well, even if we will lose in Australia. because deserving guys will be sent.

Posted by MuraliUK on (November 26, 2011, 8:38 GMT)

Very good selection, Srikanth et al, over all much along the expected line. But I can texplain the inclusion of Saha. If Parthiv was chosen instead, he could have replaced Rahane and have another fast bowler like Sreeshant / Asish Nehra who are not bad. Having a reserve bowler may have been a better option - never know when Zaheer may give way. Another idea would be to send an India A with the next best XI available to major touring country, in parallel. This is with - 1- with the idea of an immediate replacement of an in form batsmen or bowler as the need arises, 2 - the 2nd XI gains experience. BCCI has the money for such a thing. This may have saved a lot of blushing in England a few months back.

Posted by mikey76 on (November 26, 2011, 8:31 GMT)

I find it funny to see Srikkanth thinks India should go and win a series in Australia. This is a side that was thumped 4-0 in England and has struggled at times to put a moderate West Indies side to bed. Australia are on an upward curve with a good pace attack. Unless Zaheer Khan is fit and firing I cant see India's medium pacers causing many problems and traditionally finger spinners have struggled in Australia, even Swann found it tough going to get wickets, so I dont see Ohja and Ashwin giving Australia sleepless nights.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 8:31 GMT)

I think we have Suresh Raina also there becoz one day series followed after test match and he is well acuainted with the weather and conditions there. He coul be the member of the test team also.

Posted by getsetgopk on (November 26, 2011, 8:30 GMT)

Bhajji should start playing gulli danda im sure he'll be successful doing that but not playing cricket.

Posted by SASANK360 on (November 26, 2011, 8:24 GMT)

I really want to see Rohit Sharma in the playing XI. If Yuvraj is troubled by short pitched balls, so is Virat Kohli. But Rohit Sharma has no weakness in his game.He has no discomfort in facing bouncers or short balls.Infact he relishes playing the short balls. Also he can adjust to the pacy and bouncy wickets of Aus very well.Just watch the way he played in the both finals of CB series of 2007-08. ALSO I HATE THE INCLUSION OF W.SAHA INSTEAD PARTHIV COULD HAVE BEEN SELECTED.He has the experience of playing in Aus

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 8:24 GMT)

Although the performance of this Indian team will, as we expect be good down under, I would like to see the reservation quota being implemented for the selection of the team; Players from backward communities should have a reservation in the national team; I am not being casteist but there are a number of players in the team who are Brahmins and forward community members; We should ensure that the quota system is implemented and deserving players from other communities are given due chances without being overshadowed by other OC members;

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 8:24 GMT)

where is cheteshwar pujara...

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 8:23 GMT)

Why can't you select Suresh Kumar Raina? Has Kris Srikanth lost his memory? He is best man suited to give trouble for the Australians. He doesn't know it because he is not seeing the good things done by him. He is the man who has scored a century in all formats and I recommend Kris to select Raina.

Posted by ahmedraza_2k on (November 26, 2011, 8:20 GMT)

Suresh Raina should have been included. He performing well in Domestic cricket.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 8:19 GMT)

It wd hv bn better if selectors thought of giving Ibrahim Khallel a chance as a reserve w/k .Saha,Prthiv,Karthik all have got chance. Sad that Khaleel who has recently created a New World Record as a w/k has been tried even as a reserve w/k. His performance for Hyd as w/k in Ranji as well as in now defunct ICL was outstanding

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 8:17 GMT)

Finally, the selection panel, got some sense.!! A very balanced team, hopefully Zaheer Khan, would be fit. A golden chance for Virat, Rohit to prove themselves. And, I pray for the success of Umesh yadav and Varun, in Australia. God, India needs genuine fast bowlers, desperately.!! Good luck, team India.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 8:16 GMT)

Would like to see Irfan in the squad soon, back from injury and getting wickets! A perfect bowling all rounder that India needs apart from one unearthed in the ongoing match..R Ashwin.

Good Team... but what happend to Parthiv patel... why saha? and what abt Pujara... he is better choice before Ajinkya rahane for test in australia...

alas after a long time selectors picked up right n deserved players in the team......they even provided a backup in each departmant.....hope India defeats Aus

Posted by manoj.aspen on (November 26, 2011, 8:14 GMT)

This is a very BAD and immature decision to leave out Harbhajan who has Lords all over Australia all those years... I feel helpless to think of these Selectors how quickly they have forgotten Harbhajan and banking on Ashwin for his performance against Westindies 3rd rate Team and thinking Ashwin will Match against Australia....

Australian are known to target key players early in the series especially a new comer. even they have gone under the skin of LARA and Sachin on many occasion. They are pron to Off spinners and just imagine what will happen if they target all out in the Tour games to Ashwin?? will he be able to sustain the pressure?? if that happen Harbhajan's experience would have come handy playing against them with same intensity.

To me this is VERY-VERY childish decision.

a good team capable of winning a team better than that went to eng becouse every player is fit and who is not will prove it and join the team on the flight and also rohit ajinkya virat are techinally better mukund yuvi (who is a awesome odi player but never got that same in test maybe becouse only of myth ) and raina (who in any format with a good fast bowling attack on bouncy ptiches will struggle

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:53 GMT)

good squad has been selected... selectors have taken a brave decision to leave out harbhajan proving that even if you are a star player you have to perform well to stay in the team.. pace battery selected is very good giving msd chance to play the bowlers according to the conditions.. According to me Parthiv Patel is a far better option than wriddhiman saha who has never performed whenever given a chance.. All the best to the team and its fitness..

Posted by sudhirg2007 on (November 26, 2011, 7:50 GMT)

A fine team selection, with selectors finally picking players on Form. With current form Harbhajan should be kept out of this tour. Let him fight his way back into the Indian Dressing Room. For long he has been offered a long rope by the selectors. In the recent tours he has not done well and with Ashwin and Ojha rising to the ocassion, they have qualified on their consisted performnace......Well Done Selectors

Posted by Ramesh_Joseph on (November 26, 2011, 7:50 GMT)

Good Selection, but Abhinav mukund should have been in the squad instead of Rohit Sharma or Rahane. He has more solid technique. Also selectors should have named the standby players in case of injuries for the tour...and kept their Aussie visas ready. Would have helped to avoid last minute delays/confusions..but overall a good job by selectors. All the best Team India. Play to your real potential.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:47 GMT)

i am agreeing big time! great choices! the mixture that selectors have taken of youth and experience is great, with leaving harbhajhan out bringing young ashwin in the team, pretty much shows tht finnaly india are lokkin beyond harbhajan, there is a lot of young talent in india and everyone needs to perform to stay!

a good all-round 17 members.msd, viru, gauti, rahul, god, vvs,pk,ishant, ashwin, ojha were a must but let me remind you of the 2008 commonwealth bank series, who stood out? it was bhajji. i know that match practice matters but see experience matters too.he did not get enough from the english-damn pace wickets nor did he get enough wickets for the punjab side.but see when it comes to playing a series that too abroad down under, which almost decides your fate, there should be a experienced campaigner.he has played almost 5-6 australia tours in his 13-yr career and when u play down under u take all the big guys from the lot.HE IS NOT IN GOOD FORM BUT SEE WHY DID WE BOOK VIRU'S TICKET TO BIRMINGHAM TO PLAY WHEN HE WAS UNFIT AND NOT IN FORM?because we thought that this 11-yr campaigner would do some miracle and save the last 2 tests.AT LEAST HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN PLACE IN THE 17-MAN SQUAD NOT IN THE XI IN PLACE OF SAHA.WITH WHATEVER PAIN DHONI DOESN'T SACRIFICE THE GLOVES AFTER ALL>>>>>>>

Picking Wriddhiman Saha ahead of Parthiv Patel in slot of Reserve Keeper does not make sense. Parthiv has experience of Aus conditions, can open the innings and has experience and age on his side. These points cannot be overlooked while picking a team for such an important tour

Posted by Haleos on (November 26, 2011, 7:46 GMT)

Good team. Probably Rahane could be given a go ahead since his back foot game was impressive in the England ODIs. In any case, Kohli and Rahane bring about the same amount of uncertainity as far as No. 6 is concerned. So trying Rahane should not adversely affect the team.

I hope he comes back strong in the next few ranji matches and gets selected for the next test series. kohli, rohit sharma, pujara, and rahane are the future middle order batsmen in the indian test team.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:37 GMT)

come on... plz accept that harbhajan cant pick wickets now.... ojha n ashwin rock... varun is better than umesh... rohit?? y is he here?? sachin wil ge his 100th 100... so dont worry.... zaheer wil b fit :-) rahane must practice a lot harder now.... saha?? i dont see him getting any game :-p

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:36 GMT)

beautiful selection by the selection panel...good to see Harbhajan not included....best of luck team INDIA...

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:34 GMT)

wriddhiman saha as the reserve wicket keeper? What wrong has parthiv patel done that he doesnt even figure in the test team even though he is a member of the indian team in the odi series against WI.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:34 GMT)

i guess it is going to be a dream team ...perfect perfect team,,,great job sri

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:33 GMT)

Looks competitive! Would be happy if ZAK can actually make d cut.. coz he is still uncertain!

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:32 GMT)

Nobody should take his position for granted. ... Leaving Bhajji for RAshwin & PPOjha is probably one of the most prudent decisions the Selectors have made. ... Well Done. ...

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:30 GMT)

What was the need to keep Harbhajan Singh , Yuvraj Singh , Shanthakumaran Sreesanth , Suresh Kumar Raina and Murali Vijay out of the team ? Virat Kohli , Wriddhiman Prasanta Saha , Rohit Gurunath Sharma , Ajinkya Madhukar Rahane and Varun Raymond Aaron are not fir for Indian Test Team for Australia.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:30 GMT)

Brave Decision. Bujji can do nothing on those flat tracks, I guess even Bujji might have expected it, as he has not shown any good signs in Ranji season so far. Another good decision is to drop Suresh Raina from this squad. Dhoni might have realized after the England series that poor performance of his personnel friends costed his Midas Touch to Indian team. This is the best possible Squad that selectors can get at the moment. Everybody must satisfy with this selection. ALL THE BEST INDIA.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:29 GMT)

I THINK TAKING P.OJHA TO AUSTRALIA IS A WASTE RAHUL SHARMA IS MUCH BETTER BOWLER THAN OJHA IN AUSTRALIA AND AGAIN SELECTORS IGNORE YUVRAJ IS NOT FAIR WITH HIM JUST TWO TEST AGAISNT WINDIES TO TEST HIS TALENT WHI HAVE WIN LOTS OF MATCHES FOR INDIA IN ODIS AND WC2011 AND SELECTORS DROPPPED HIM OTHER SIDE ROHIT SHARMA IS HOT FAVOURITE PLAYER FOR SELECTORS IN TEST OR ODIS I DONT NO WHAT TALENT HE HAVE I STILL BELIEVE YUVRAJ IS BETTER OPTION TO PLAY IN AUSTRALIA AT NO.7 ON BOUNCY PITCHES

Posted by Kashi0127 on (November 26, 2011, 7:28 GMT)

Good Team - glad they left out Harbhajan and Youraj. Both players with arrogance and some attitude. Youvi is highly talented and might still find a place in future. You can virtually write off Bhajji. I wish they look at Karnataka players too - Vinay , Aaravind and Manish Pandey jhave all been knocking on doors for a long time for recognition...

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:26 GMT)

If Zaheer on fitness, where is Pujara ? :(

Posted by donda on (November 26, 2011, 7:26 GMT)

Week bowling attack. India will be able to even draw this series. There is be more bounce in the pitch and old batsmen will not be able to tackle that at all. I hope to have 1-1 series draw but Aussies can also pull up 4-0. Indian win in Australia, no way this bowling attack cannot bowl out australia at all. Spinner cannot win matches in Australia.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:25 GMT)

This team is ok, but depends on how Virat Kohli and Rohit perform outside the sub-continent in the batting front. In the bowling front, it is Zaheer, how soon he returns to his rhythm and performance of the spinners picked in the squad. Picking lots of wickets against a weak side like West Indies that too on Indian pitches may actually boomerang in Australia. Among present generation cricketers from West Indies, only Chris Gayle has the ability to unsettle the Indian spinners by forcing them to err in their line and length. By not picking Gayle, West Indies had actually lost all matches on Indian pitches, even before the series started.

Perfect Team this is for Australia... Australia we are coming.....

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:23 GMT)

my team for aus 1.sehwag2.gambir3. dravid 4. sachin 5. laxman 6. irfan 7. dhoni 8. ashwin 9. praveen 10. ishant 11. umesh you like it ????

Posted by Dinesanti on (November 26, 2011, 7:23 GMT)

Thank god no harbajan...don't thnk we miss his experience...avg 60 above in australia is not good...overrated bowler..end of paav bajji ...he he...

Posted by wolf777 on (November 26, 2011, 7:23 GMT)

Is Zaheer Khan really fit? Didn't he pull out and left India a bowler short in the First Test of 2003-2004 series as well? He is India's best fast bowler; but, he needs to prove his match fitness. Also, the team lacks an allrounder and there is one too many spinners.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:23 GMT)

Great work by the Indian Selectors.... They had chosen a team which is in a good form....Harbhajan is an outstanding spinner but selectors can't neglect the performance of Ojha & Ashwin...

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:22 GMT)

good team selection has to be admitted, shorn of emotional thought & full of pragmatism rewarding current performance & form. the only debating point was the second wicketkeeper slot but with parthiv fluffing numerous chances & Saha being the better keeper he got the nod. Rahane too deserves his slot & the oz experience will do him and kohli a world of good as india's young guns prepare to emulate their seniors. Only hope is zak is fit as he makes a huge difference to the side - ability, experience & a teacher to the rest , we need him fit . Fortunately with Ashwin the allrounder we genuinely bat till eight. & as many have commented - batting wont be an issue as india struggles only against swing & seam ( Eng / NZ) or against express pace n swing( steyn/ morkel/finn) but then who doesnt. the sheffield shield scores in Australia show the pitches are true and no demons. Good luck to a balanced side led by a fine skipper and kudos to the selectors .

Saha? why not parthiv.........

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:21 GMT)

this is the perfect team...PK and rahane have got their due but i think badrinath also deserved a place in the squad...but well thumbs up to srikanth...:)

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:21 GMT)

Good to see that the selectors have persisted with Ashwin & Ojha. But why have they picked Saha? Parthiv would have been a better choice. Saha hasn't really used his opportunities well enough to guarantee a place in the squad. The key bowler in this squad is Zaheer Khan. Hope he remains injury-free and plays all the test matches. In the batting line-up, Rohit Sharma's inclusion is a surprise. A 16-member squad would have been sufficient. If they had to pick an additional member, a bowling all-rounder like Irfan Pathan should have been selected. Agreed that he had lost his magical touch in his last couple of years in intl' cricket. But he's been doing pretty well in the Ranjis this season. With all due respect to Ashwin's century against the West Indies, it's still way too early to brand him as an all-rounder. There are no genuine all-rounders in this squad and somebody like Pathan could have been handy.

Posted by Aashish_goyal on (November 26, 2011, 7:20 GMT)

This is ridiculous..so harsh on Harbhajan .He deserved the place against Aus as he has always been the no 1 bowler against them.I know Ojha and Aswin are doing good, but in Australia experience will count and even 3 spinners would have been better option.

Posted by the_blaster on (November 26, 2011, 7:20 GMT)

I like the team except for Saha. Why do they keep picking that guy over Parthiv and Karthik?

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:19 GMT)

It's good to see the side with Ashwin,Ohja, Rohit Sharma, Varun Aaron, Umesh Yadav n Rahane

Posted by Raman.UV on (November 26, 2011, 7:18 GMT)

Saha is lucky guy to be in the team may be cos he plays for CSK, Patel or D Karthick have been there instead of saha. well next time dinesh should tryto get into CSK team to play for India again i hope. Well i m from Chennai but i don't its fair to give this chat on such a tour, nice to see Rohit, Rahane and Virat cos they r our next starts with there technique. well Rohit is one of the best player we have when v see his batting technic against quality bowlers n tough conditions as he already proved in south africa(T20 world cup) and aus(2008 VB), team should be selected on the basis of performance and these guys r performing consistently, and Vijay is consistently under performing in the given run in all the form so he doesn't deserve any more chance for now atleast, when compared to mukund these guys r better in terms of handling pressue and patience cos in england and WI he played some poor shots, he need some more time for now.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:18 GMT)

perfact team for australia tour :)

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:18 GMT)

why 5 bowlers? Giving chance in just two test matches to yuvi and axing him is the foolish thing made by the selectors... not an easy place to prove his batting skills...

Posted by ultimatewarrior on (November 26, 2011, 7:18 GMT)

This will be most undisputed list from the selectors in recent years and will definitely going to match up popularity factor and expertise factor with selector's choice...good work....hope this will bring good results too...might we are going to see a win for the first time down under...good luck

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:17 GMT)

Great to see we got the good replacements for Harbhajan........Bhaji better luck next time............

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:16 GMT)

Zak is Back :) :) Hope he gets to his usual form in the Ranji trophy matches before flying Down under!!

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:16 GMT)

This is the squad that is required to suceed down under. Good to see Zaheer back in the squad :).

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:15 GMT)

Why Saha? Karthick should have gone!

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:15 GMT)

Nice selection buddy.......

Posted by DaranLux on (November 26, 2011, 7:14 GMT)

Bold and perfect decision to drop Harbhajan Singh. No comments on Yuvi's exclusion as he himself admitted that he's not 100% fit. And happy to see Ashwin, Ojha, Umesh and Aaron joining the bowling attack wagon lead by the Intelligent Zaheer.. Hope India hits gold this time.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:14 GMT)

zak should not have been selcted instead irfan pathan could have been included to bat at no:6 and bowl his swingers ..... he has a better technique than any no :6 batsmen india has tried so far......

Posted by Fast_Track_Bully on (November 26, 2011, 7:14 GMT)

good team! All the best team India.........

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:12 GMT)

nice team but we misses bhaji too.......................

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:12 GMT)

correct team selection. Bhajji doesn't deserve a place in the Indian cricket team after that pathetic performance in the English summer. In fact, Ashwin is the way forward for team India now. I'm sure this team will be competitive in Australia.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:11 GMT)

Expected Squad...Wriddhiman saha - present for all the tournaments and never been given a cup of tea.

Posted by candyfloss on (November 26, 2011, 7:11 GMT)

This is exactly the squad I had envisaged, except I would have liked to make room for Pujara as well but the need for an extra keeper means Pujara would have to miss out.Absolutely delighted to see the omission of Yuvraj and Raina finally the selectors have realised that these are only odi players.Over all a good selection now only if Zaheer can keep himself fit we have a very good chance of crushing the Aussies after coming close in 2003-04 and 2007-08.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:11 GMT)

Quite a good pick. Weldone..

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:11 GMT)

Y Saha ?? Parthiv Patel has been doing a pretty decent job.

Posted by KAIRAVA on (November 26, 2011, 7:11 GMT)

Whats is the point is picking up an extra keeper in W. Saha when you are not going to play him in the test series down under ? Dhoni after opting out of the WI ODI series would have taken a well deserved rest before the Aus series. In fact, he along with all key players of the best test XI should play in both the warmup matches before the 1st test (Boxing Day match) so that the Indians get properly acclimatised to the Aussie conditions. No room for excuses for bad performances in the tour opener any more.

Posted by shailbuch on (November 26, 2011, 7:09 GMT)

Saha again??? Why not Parthiv who has played there in 2004 and has made back to back 100s in Ranji? Saha has never proved himself at international despite quite a few chances... I think they missed a trick there because if a reserve keeper is required, that means you don't have a strong batsman in Dhoni already... Other than that a perfect team I should say!! Can't wait for the series...

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:08 GMT)

Perfect Team. Really brave to leave out Bhaji , yuvraj and continue with Ash and Oj.... Good Luck

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:07 GMT)

grt selection.HB doesnt deserve chance.Wish pujara was there..

Posted by coppyshoppy on (November 26, 2011, 7:07 GMT)

Good Selection. Selection committee had done a good job

Posted by Tim40621 on (November 26, 2011, 7:07 GMT)

with Harbhajans record against australia i would have picked him but with Ashwin and Ojha bowling the way they are you cant leave them out i guess

Posted by Gupta.Ankur on (November 26, 2011, 7:07 GMT)

I think the only gamble india have taken is to select India's Shane Bond......ie Zaheer Khan in the squad.....

Don't think he will play more than 1 match in australia........

Posted by mayankximbcricinfo on (November 26, 2011, 7:07 GMT)

Looks like the best team india has selected. BEst chance for india to defeat aus in aus with india having the strongest team and aus the weakest. But series depends a lot on Zaheer because indian bowlers perform better when ZAK is around

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:06 GMT)

Really good selection... but where is Yuvi???? He should be in 17 men squad.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:06 GMT)

This is the same team that Harsha Bhogale had predicted in his article. Well done Harsha, and well done selectors too for leaving out Bhajji. He has been great for the country but the time has come for him to say goodbye.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:06 GMT)

Way to go BCCI after realising the fact that Harbhajan is certainly out of form. He is certainly not on par at the moment, not performing even in the domestic level. Harbhajan deserves this.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:05 GMT)

Even if India under performs at Australia, one shouldnt blame dropping of Harbhajan, because in this scenario (Harbhajan underperforming in Ranji and Spin duo Ojha and Ashwin performing well) it is the right decision !

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:05 GMT)

i think it is nice team; experience batting line up likely to do well & with return of ZAK& praveen bowling lineup looks capable of picking up 20 wkts.

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:03 GMT)

I was expecting bhajji to be in taking into accnt what he did last time in australia...but i guess this is the best possible they could have chosen..and pray for zaheer that he proves his fitness..

Posted by   on (November 26, 2011, 7:02 GMT)

on the expected lines...i feel 4 harbhajan but he dig his own grave
