India in Australia T20I Series - 2nd T20I

Australia v India

India won by 8 wickets (with 2 balls remaining)

7.30 pm: Five minutes to the start. The crowd is building at the MCG, and David Warner and Aaron Finch, two powerful Australian openers, are striding out to the middle. Praveen Kumar has the new ball, bowling to Warner from over the wicket.

7.15 pm: The ground staff at the MCG, during a few hours of creativity, has created a design in the shape of Australia in the middle of the ground. So one end of the pitch is roughly in Northern Territory, while the other is in South Australia. Maybe we'll call the two ends the Southern Ocean end and the Gulf of Carpentaria end.

"Dhoni's prolonged insistence not to play Irfan Pathan is inexplicable. He is a proven performer in Australian conditions, and to not play him with this under performing outfit baffles the mind." That's from Faraz, a sentiment shared by many others.

Joy: "I think Dhoni has moved on from being a calm & composed captain and has started reflecting arrogance in his decisions. It's more like we will win with this team only & prove that my decision is correct."

Toss, 7.05 pm: George Bailey has won the toss and Australia will bat again. "Beautiful wicket, looks hard, full of runs," he says.

Australia have made three changes, to give everyone in their squad a go. Aaron Finch, Shaun Marsh and Clint McKay are in the XI, replacing Travis Birt, Dan Christian and James Faulkner. Word is that Finch will open with Warner, with Matthew Wade dropping down the order.

India are playing the same side that lost in Sydney. Irfan Pathan still on the sidelines. Rohit Sharma made a first-ball duck in that match. Sidharth Monga asks if he can script a happy ending?

7.00 pm Hello, welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the second Twenty20 international between Australia and India, at the MCG. The hosts lead the series 1-0, and India are still searching for their first win of any kind on this tour of Australia.

The toss is in five minutes, and here's Brydon Coverdale's preview of this game. In the first game in Sydney, David Warner unleashed a monstrous switch-hit that sent the ball flying beyond what should have been the extra-cover boundary for the left-hand batsman. It re-ignited the debate over whether that shot should be allowed. David Hussey thinks it should.

0.1

Kumar to Warner, no run, good length and straight first up, Warner stays in his crease, gets squared up a touch and defends

0.2

Kumar to Warner, no run, good length on a similar line, going across the left-hander, Warner taps the ball on the leg side

0.3

Kumar to Warner, 2 runs, a touch shorter and on leg stump, Warner moves back and across and taps the ball through square leg, the batsmen run hard and take two on this large outfield

0.4

0.5

Kumar to Finch, no run, Finch pushes with hard hands at a ball that pitches on a length outside off, hits it uppishly but bounces well short of the fielder at cover point

0.6

Kumar to Finch, FOUR, width outside off stump and Finch tries to blaze the ball through the off side, he gets a thick outside edge which carries the ball high over the head of the only slip catcher

End of over 1 (7 runs) Australia 7/0 (RR: 7.00)

Vinay Kumar is sharing the new ball ... from round the wicket to the left-hand batsman.

1.1

Vinay Kumar to Warner, 1 run, Vinay is massively lucky to escape there, he began with a leg-stump full toss and Warner mis-timed the whip behind square. Finch sets off quickly and steals the single

1.2

Vinay Kumar to Finch, FOUR, too full and straight, Finch stays on his crease and tees off, lifting the ball over midwicket and to the boundary

1.3

Vinay Kumar to Finch, no run, width offered outside off and this time Finch middles the cut, he doesn't beat cover point through

1.4

Vinay Kumar to Finch, 1 run, tapped off the back foot close on the leg side for a quick single

1.5

1.5

Vinay Kumar to Warner, no run, short of a length outside off, Warner defends on the back foot on the off side

1.6

Vinay Kumar to Warner, FOUR, not so lucky this time is Vinay, Warner attempts to whip the ball off his pads through midwicket but eventually places it wide of the fielder at short fine leg, poor line from the bowler

Kumar to Warner, OUT, caught at deep square leg! Warner took on Praveen, trying to pull off the front foot and clear what is a huge boundary. He didn't make proper contact and sent the ball soaring. 2.5

Kumar to SE Marsh, OUT, edged and juggled once, juggled twice and finally caught! Marsh pushes forward at a delivery that slants across him and edges to Virender Sehwag's left at first slip. Sehwag fumbles on the first attempt and tumbles, as he tumbles he reaches out to tap the ball further in the air, so Dhoni, who moved to his left, can take the catch

5.1

Vinay Kumar to Finch, no run, good length and straight, no width this time so Finch gets behind the line and defends towards the bowler

6.1

Kohli to Finch, 1 run, a little width outside off and Finch waits in his crease and dabs to third man

India have been outstanding in the field, which is a refreshing change from their previous performances on this tour. A target of 132 probably gives them their best shot at a first win on this tour, since the Boxing Day Test at this venue.

Shiva: "For once Indian bowlers have had a decent game on this tour. Let's see if their batsmen can complement them!"
