0.1

Pattinson to McCullum, no run, short of a length to start with, a touch of away seam and impressive carry at 141 kph but too wide outside off to trouble McCullum.

0.2

Pattinson to McCullum, FOUR, and here we go! McCullum starts off with his customary lash through the line as Pattinson over-pitches outside off and invites the drive. That didn't move off the straight, and Baz just smashed it on the walk.

0.3

Pattinson to McCullum, FOUR, 146 kph, the pace isn't stopping Baz from going after it. Another full ball, this one seamed away nicely and Baz ended up thick-edging the drive, but boy did he go at it with a vengeance. He managed to scythe it up and over gully.

0.4

Pattinson to McCullum, 1 wide, Baz is almost beside himself as Pattinson lands one very wide outside off, he wanted to have another bash at it, but it was really wide.

0.4

Pattinson to McCullum, no run, that's a searching line, 141 kph and much closer to off stump, Baz is looking good here. He plants the front foot across early and check-drives solidly to mid-off.

0.5

Pattinson to McCullum, no run, Pattinson has had a rather scatter-gun over to start his Test career. This one be sprays down the leg side.

0.6

Pattinson to McCullum, FOUR, 147 kph out of Pattinson's hand. 294 kph out of the absolute meat of Baz's piece of wood. Over-pitched outside off, he leans across and drills it with a flourish through the covers. New Zealand are taking it to the Aussies.

New Zealand 13/0   JL Pattinson 1-0-13-0
2.1

Pattinson to Guptill, 2 runs, back of a length on the pads, Guptill stays on the crease and works it square through midwicket. A bit of damp in the outfield as the fielder kicks up some moist grass as he slides.

2.2

Pattinson to Guptill, no run, Beaten outside off. Splendid seam position, the ball angled in, landed on a length outside off and then straightened with the seam to leave Guptill groping down the wrong line.

2.3

Pattinson to Guptill, no run, and again. Guptill pushes uncertainly as he looks to cover the line and gets squared up by a legcutter, that goes through to hit his thigh.

2.4

Pattinson to Guptill, 2 runs, a bit of madness, and we have a run-out appeal that's gone upstairs. I think Guptill is safe. Pitched up outside off, Guptill drives it into the covers where Starc had to move to his left and dive. He couldn't stop it cleanly and parried it to Warner from point. They decided to take a second, Guptill was hesitant to start with, and a better through would have had him. Warner's wasn't, and Guptill could dive in before Haddin flicked the ball back onto the stumps.

2.5

Pattinson to Guptill, no run, Guptill stays on the crease and lets another one hitting the seam to go away from him. Good, good second over this from Pattinson.

2.6

Pattinson to Guptill, no run, and another jaffa to end the over. Beats Guptill yet again as he gets the half step across and looks to cover the line.

New Zealand 21/0   JL Pattinson 2-0-17-0
4.1

Pattinson to Guptill, no run, almost another chance to Khawaja at short leg. Guptill stays back and tucks a short ball off his hips and it nearly yorks Khawaja who is standing up a touch early. Might have been a chance if he stayed low.

4.2

Pattinson to Guptill, no run, Guptill lets a back of a length steepler outside off through to Haddin.

4.3

Pattinson to Guptill, no run, golly, beaten again by a ripping seamer that goes away deviously. Guptill was squared up and left looking silly.

4.4

Pattinson to Guptill, no run, another one swerves past the outside edge. Guptill leans out and looks to drive at one that is little fuller and a little wider, but the ball keeps going away.

4.5

Pattinson to Guptill, no run, better from Guptill, hangs back and gets nicely behind the line to defend.

4.6

Pattinson to Guptill, FOUR, Guptill steals a page from the McCullum book and slashes a boundary away over the cordon. Frenetic start this. Short and rising outside off this one, he was beside the line and gave it the carve, but ended up edging it a lot finer than he wanted.

New Zealand 29/0   JL Pattinson 3-0-21-0
6.1

Pattinson to McCullum, 2 runs, a thwacky punch off the back foot from McCullum as he stays back and works the hand through the line of a short ball furiously. He was in position early and played that pretty well in the end through cover.

Pattinson to McCullum, no run, back of a length again, McCullum quickly shifts onto the back foot and defends.

6.3

Pattinson to McCullum, no run, Pattinson again bends one wide down the leg side.

6.4

Pattinson to McCullum, no run, whoa, can't stop McCullum from having a flay at everything outside off. This one wasn't short or wide enough outside off. McCullum tried to crack it square, all muscles, but he missed it.

6.5

Pattinson to McCullum, no run, back of a length outside off, McCullum stays back and defends to mid-off.

6.6

Pattinson to McCullum, (no ball) 1 run, no-ball, but a good length that. Draws McCullum forward and punches into the off side.

6.6

Pattinson to Guptill, no run, ends with a loaded wobbler that seams away from a length outside off. A leave from Guptill.

New Zealand 34/0   JL Pattinson 4-0-25-0

19.2

Pattinson to Williamson, no run, back of a length now, angles into the right hander who defends to the leg side.

19.3

Pattinson to Williamson, 1 run, still too short. Williamson is comfortably on the crease as he works it behind square for a single.

19.4

Pattinson to Taylor, no run, better length now, fuller to Taylor but he lets it go after giving it a thought.

19.5

Pattinson to Taylor, no run, Khawaja clangs it at short leg. Straight in, straight out. Back of a length, angled into the body and Taylor turns the wrists on it and it goes straight at Khawaja's right hand, it goes in and pops out. It all happened in a flash, but that's a drop.

19.6

Pattinson to Taylor, FOUR, and more pain for Pattinson as he overcooks the final ball and serves it up full and juicy on the toes. Taylor flicks it away with a raspy working of the wrists and it races away.

New Zealand 72/2   JL Pattinson 5-0-30-0

21.3

Pattinson to Ryder, no run, lets another one go outside off as Pattinson lets it go once more.

21.4

Pattinson to Ryder, no run, angled across at 139 kph at pace, and Ryder stays on the crease to leave.

21.5

Pattinson to Ryder, no run, good seam on that, Pattinson cuts it right across Ryder who looks to cover the line but is left groping in its wake.

21.6

Pattinson to Ryder, FOUR, uppish, but veritably smashed down the ground. Over-pitched by Pattinson, Ryder is reluctant as ever to get forward and hence ends up spooning the drive back and it nearly takes Taylor down. He gets out of the way and the ball races away briskly.

New Zealand 84/3   JL Pattinson 6-0-36-0
23.1

Pattinson to Taylor, FOUR, Taylor's turn to edge through the cordon. Pattinson continues to move it away off the seam, Taylor is squared up as he looks to cover the line and edges it through the slips.

23.2

Pattinson to Taylor, no run, big appeal, huge lbw appeal turned down. They haven't referred it. Has to be the bounce. Taylor surely didn't leave it on bounce. This one nipped in sharply with the angle as Taylor pressed forward and shouldered arms. Hits him above the front pad, but in line with the stumps.

23.3

Pattinson to Taylor, no run, lets the length ball outside off to go through to the keeper.

23.4

Pattinson to Taylor, OUT, New Zealand, what are you doing! Taylor gives Pattinson his first Test scalp and stumps are in a mess. Simple three-card bluff this, after landing the last two back of a length, Pattison goes really full outside off now and asks Taylor if he fancies a swing five minutes before lunch. Taylor takes him on, but he didn't get into the best position for a square drive. The front foot was in the next zip code as he drove wide, wide away from his body. Inside-edged it onto the furniture.

LRPL Taylor b Pattinson 14 (33m 15b 3x4 0x6) SR: 93.33
