Sri Lanka in Australia ODI Series - 3rd ODI

Australia v Sri Lanka

Australia won by 8 wickets (with 170 balls remaining)

0.1

Malinga to Watson, 1 run, Watson is off the mark immediately with a cut behind point that is collected by third man

0.2

Malinga to Haddin, no run, good ball, quick at 143kph and swinging away a touch, Haddin hangs the bat out half-heartedly

0.3

Malinga to Haddin, no run, left alone safely, another one that swings away

0.4

Malinga to Haddin, no run, short of a length now, Haddin defends on the back foot

0.5

Malinga to Haddin, 2 runs, full and swinging away, Haddin gets a thick edge through a fourth-slip sort of region, and that's good running to hurry back for two

0.6

Malinga to Haddin, no run, short of a length, Haddin lets it through to Sangakkara

End of over 1 (3 runs) Australia 3/0 (113 runs required from 49 overs, RR: 3.00, RRR: 2.30)
BJ Haddin    2* (5b)      SL Malinga    1-0-3-0
SR Watson    1* (1b)

1.1

Fernando to Watson, 3 runs, good shot, it was a half-volley outside off and Watson drives square, between point and cover and picks up three runs

1.2

Fernando to Haddin, (no ball) 1 run, oops, Fernando has over-stepped here, Haddin guides it to third man and Watson will have a free hit

1.2

Fernando to Watson, 2 runs, bouncer, Watson swings everything at this free hit, gets a top edge that flies over the keeper's head and is collected on the bounce by third man

1.3

Fernando to Watson, 2 no balls, oh dear, Fernando has no-balled again, it's a bouncer that has proven too tough for Sangakkara, who knocks it down but they run a bye. Another free hit coming up - and Fernando was way over the crease

1.3

Fernando to Haddin, 1 wide, Haddin gets the free hit this time and it's a wide ball, too far outside off - so the free-hit carries on to the next delivery

1.3

Fernando to Haddin, no run, this time the free hit is better directed, shortish outside off and Haddin's attempted cut doesn't connect

So Fernando has bowled six balls this over, but he still has three to deliver

1.4

Fernando to Haddin, no run, better ball, right on off stump and Haddin defends

1.5

Fernando to Haddin, 1 run, defended behind point, Haddin picks up a single

1.6

Fernando to Watson, no run, good yorker just outside off, Watson jams the bat down on that

A long over there from Fernando, and it's cost 11 runs

End of over 2 (11 runs) Australia 14/0 (102 runs required from 48 overs, RR: 7.00, RRR: 2.12)
SR Watson    6* (5b)      CRD Fernando    1-0-11-0
BJ Haddin    4* (9b)      SL Malinga    1-0-3-0

2.1

Malinga to Haddin, 1 wide, another wide called now, as Malinga sprays it outside off and Haddin's flat-footed swipe doesn't connect, perhaps luckily for the batsman

2.1

Malinga to Haddin, 2 runs, swinging away from Haddin, who angles the bat down to Fernando at third man, and that's good running to get back for two. Fernando wasn't very alert in the field

2.2

Malinga to Haddin, no run, straight-bat defence from Haddin

2.3

Malinga to Haddin, 1 run, full toss down leg side, Haddin clips it away to deep square leg and just gets a single - that would most definitely have been a wide, anyway, had Haddin not chased it

2.4

Malinga to Watson, 1 wide, that's a shocker - bouncer waaaaay down leg side and Sangakkara does well to take that

2.4

Malinga to Watson, 1 run, flicked off his pads to fine leg

2.5

Malinga to Haddin, no run, crunched towards cover point but can't beat the field

2.6

Malinga to Haddin, no run, good ball, swinging away a touch, and Haddin defends

"Fergo should bat at 3," Muzza says. "He's in ripping form and give him a chance to get some runs after a year or so out of the game."

End of over 3 (6 runs) Australia 20/0 (96 runs required from 47 overs, RR: 6.66, RRR: 2.04)

SR Watson    7* (6b)      CRD Fernando    1-0-11-0

3.1

Fernando to Watson, FOUR, Fernando tries for the yorker but it's just a bit too full, Watson clips it through midwicket and finds the gap with ease

That ball registered at 147kph - quick stuff from Fernando, if he can get it on line

3.2

Fernando to Watson, no run, slower at 135kph, Watson gets a leading edge that lobs safely into the off side

3.3

Fernando to Watson, no run, sharpish! Very good bouncer at 145kph and reasonably well-directed. Watson sways out of the way. It was just outside off, a touch straighter and he might have clattered the helmet of Watto

3.4

Fernando to Watson, no run, Watson gets forward to defend

3.5

Fernando to Watson, no run, 149.6kph! Watson flays at a square drive to a wide-ish ball that sails through to Sangakkara, on the rise as it reaches him

3.6

Fernando to Watson, 1 run, and Fernando has touched 150 - 150.1kph in fact. Watson drops it at his feet and scurries through for a single

"Agree with Muzza," says Adrian Meredith. "When the match is in the bag and the series is all over, now is the time to give people some match practice. So why not give Ferguson a go at 3? Or Smith? Or others who may feature in the Ashes?"

I doubt Ferguson will feature in the Ashes, at least in the first few Tests. Khawaja is next cab off the rank in the Test team.

End of over 4 (5 runs) Australia 25/0 (91 runs required from 46 overs, RR: 6.25, RRR: 1.97)

4.3

Malinga to Haddin, no run, straight line from Malinga, Haddin defends

4.5

Malinga to Haddin, no run, beaten outside off, good ball that nips away a little

4.6

Malinga to Haddin, FOUR, lovely stroke! Haddin gets onto the back foot and simply punches a drive through cover, finds the gap and gets his first boundary of the innings

End of over 5 (9 runs) Australia 34/0 (82 runs required from 45 overs, RR: 6.80, RRR: 1.82)
BJ Haddin    13* (19b 1x4)      SL Malinga    3-0-18-0

5.1

Fernando to Watson, 1 wide, full toss down leg, Sangakkara launches himself to his left and does well to save a boundary's worth of wides

5.1

Fernando to Watson, OUT, Fernando strikes! Good ball at 150kph and cramped Watson a bit, he's tried to open the face and cut that to third man but it was too close, he's simply guided it to Mathews at first slip

SR Watson c Mathews b Fernando 15 (28m 14b 1x4 0x6) SR: 107.14

Time for a change of bowling. Here's Perera.

"I rate Fergosun higher then Khawaja," says Muzza. "Fergs should replace Punter when he retires not Khawaja. Fergo scored 169 or around that in a shield game and you still reckon Khawaja a better test prospect then Fergo? Whats Khawaja done this summer so far? Sorry, but i disagree Byron."

First of all, Muzza, it's Brydon, not Byron. And secondly, did you not catch up with this handy double-century Khawaja made in NSW's first Shield game of the summer?

6.1

Perera to Haddin, no run, good start from Perera, on a good length on off stump, it's driven back to the bowler

9.1

Fernando to Haddin, 1 run, played off the pads towards square leg

9.2

Fernando to Clarke, 3 wides, a bouncer but it's too high and soars over a leaping Sangakkara, who gets a bit of glove on it, the fielder pulls it in just inside the boundary

Australia have won by eight wickets - a consolation victory, and Sri Lanka take the series 2-1. Clint McKay is Man of the Match and the Player of the Series is Lasith Malinga.

Well played by Michael Clarke to guide that chase, but the win was set up by superb bowling from Clint McKay and Mitchell Starc, who showed some real promise in his second ODI.

Peter English is at the Gabba and has sent through his bulletin super quickly. Here it is. So, well done to Australia, but extra well done to Sri Lanka over the course of their tour. Meanwhile, check out the scores in Ahmedabad, where New Zealand are really challenging India in the first Test!

From me, Brydon Coverdale, thanks for joining us throughout the series, and goodbye for now.
