Stats editor Every week the Numbers Game takes a look at the story behind the stats, with an original slant on facts and figures. The column is edited by S Rajesh, ESPNcricinfo's stats editor in Bangalore. He did an MBA in marketing, and then worked for a year in advertising, before deciding to chuck it in favour of a job which would combine the pleasures of watching cricket and writing about it. The intense office cricket matches were an added bonus.

but still far better than last year's pathetic Indian performance in Aus!
Posted by TexanBlue on (December 29, 2012, 11:13 GMT)SL have only themselves to blame for this pathetic showing. Their board keeps on scraping scheduled test matches in favor of limited overs matches. Sanga rightly said that they need to play a minimum of 12 tests per year to compete in the longer version. If the players keep on playing ODIs and T20s, how on earth do you expect them to last 5 days? ICC must wake up now to preserve the integrity of tests. They need to come up with a clear plan with different boards. They either let each country pick & choose between ODis and tests or enforce each country to play a minimum of 12 tests each year. Create two groups; one with countries willing to play maximum tests each year, the other with countries who will play no or minimum tests. This will enhance competetiveness. Imagine fans waiting for the whole year for the Boxing day test and the game finishes so quickly; the holidays are spoiled. CA will now invite SL in the winters to play games in Townsville and Alice Springs against their A team
Posted byTime for the so called "Lankan Lions" to play only minnows at home on flat and dead pitches !!! ....because they just can't beat any other major cricketing team in the World right now !!!
Posted by ats78 on (December 29, 2012, 6:43 GMT)Srilankans are almost joining the likes of bangladesh , no wins in Australia India, and just one in SA , hopeless and from some 25 odd matches only one win against Aus and that too obviously in their home ground, pathetic as it may come..
Posted by eZoha on (December 29, 2012, 4:41 GMT)Time for Ranatunga to bash IPL again. And I can't argue with him this time.
Posted by Chris_P on (December 29, 2012, 1:11 GMT)@Rahul17_1983. Better go back & check the scores last year.
Posted by dissapointed on (December 29, 2012, 0:59 GMT)Rahul17_1983: Actually India were beaten in more pathetic circumstances. India were playing in conditions far more suited to their game (the pitches were dead) than this team and had no injuries. Last years "performance" by India was easily the most disgraceful I've seen in my 40+ years of watching the game, they simply didn't try.
Posted by Rahul17_1983 on (December 28, 2012, 16:06 GMT)Those who were critising india's defeat in australia will be busy in finding the place to hide themselves. At least indians were not beaten so pathetically in australia.
Posted bythey would never be considered great team unless they started winning against Australia. India lost, sl lost and Pakistan will lose if the are here. south Asian team doesn't have a clue how to play in Australia.
