Sri Lanka in Australia ODI Series - 5th ODI

Australia v Sri Lanka

Australia won by 32 runs

Surprise, surprise, Dilshan will open with the first new ball

Apart from something of a series decider, this match is also Mahela Jayawardene's final game as captain, as he has already stepped down from the Twenty20 captaincy.

Correction: Sri Lanka have won the toss and have sent Australia in. Apologies, a bit of a mix up there. This of course means that Australia will be batting first for the fifth consecutive time in the series.

Australia have one change to their side, with Michael Clarke's injured ankle ruling him out, and Glenn Maxwell stepping in. Sri Lanka field the same

Mark: "What is it about top order batsmen that they all feel such shock at being given out they feel obliged to waste their teams review regardless of the merits of the decision? I wonder how many ODI's there have been where one of the top 3 batsmen haven't called for a review of an out decision? It must be a pretty small percentage."

11.6

Kulasekara to Bailey, no run, angled in again, Bailey punches that one, but straight to the cover fielder, and Kulasekara gets in on a maiden

Mathews replaces Kulasekara

13.1

Mathews to Hughes, no run, Length ball outside off stump, a touch of movement, and that goes through to the keeper

DV3 is unhappy with the present use of DRS: "Something needs to be done about the DRS! In a business, if a system is not doing what it is designed for then you change it, right? The DRS is not getting rid of the howler. Instead, batsmen are using it tactically to review plumb LBW's. The majority of the time, the umpire makes the right decision. The majority of the time, player makes the wrong decision in reviewing line ball LBW's. So who do you think should have control of the DRS? #fixit"

13.2

Mathews to Hughes, no run, tighter on the stumps and fuller, Hughes defends that into the off side

14.2

15.4

Mathews to Bailey, no run, another appeal. This one for a caught behind, it was close to the inside edge, but there doesn't seem to be much in it. Could have been an lbw shout as well, but it hit the batsman outside off stump

15.5

Mathews to Bailey, 1 run, pushed wide of mid on, and the batsmen scamper one

15.6

josh: "The 3rd and 4th umpire should have the authority to overturn the on field call in case of batsmen adjudged out. They should see on TV and make their mind to view the replays/hotspot immediately. The batsman takes 1 min to walk back and decision can be made within that time. In case of not-out given the fielding side should call for review and they should get 2 reviews even in one dayers"

A lot of feedback suggesting that the umpires should not control the reviews, because that would be moving too close to letting technology run the game.

There's something in that.

Anyway, that's drinks at Bellerive.

18.1

Malinga to Bailey, no run, full and tailing again, pushed to mid on

Eugene LaBrooy: "What's Jeevan Mendis in the team for? He's not a specialist batsman, and he isn't bowling either."

I think he's seen as more of a utility player these days. He's in the team for his batting, and his bowling is there as a good option if the wicket is taking turn. He gives Sri Lanka plenty in the field though.

But I agree that he doesn't bowl enough at present.

Perera into the attack. He's been expensive today.

43.1

NLTC Perera to Hughes, FOUR, Hundred for Hughes! Short and wide from Perera, and that is cut hard by Hughes. He gets that through the backward point fielder, and to the fence. Good hundred and his second in the series.

Deano: "Funny how people's perception changes. Not long ago Peter Forrest made 100 from 130-odd, Australia lost the game as he was chastized for batting too slowly. Now Hughes is going at the same strike rate and it's a masterful knock, all because Australia have been (rightly) accused of being unable to play swing bowling and not being able to stick it out."

43.2

NLTC Perera to Hughes, no run, length on the pads, hit into the legside, but can't beat the fielder

43.3

NLTC Perera to Hughes, 2 runs, fullish and on off stump, scooped over the infield on the offside

43.4

NLTC Perera to Hughes, 2 runs, Hughes hits that hard into the legside this time, and there's enough time for a well-run two

43.5

NLTC Perera to Hughes, 1 run, makes room and drives that hard, but Jeevan Mendis at mid on makes a superb diving save. Can't prevent the single though

43.6

NLTC Perera to Hussey, OUT, Perera has conjured another wicket - a run out this time. Hussey hit that straight into the pitch and took off for a run that simply wasn't there, because the ball had only made it as far as the bowler. Hussey turned to return to his crease, but Perera was on target with the throw and Hussey was miles out. Decent knock there from Hussey. The end of a very good partnership.

44.2

Malinga to Hughes, no run, another slower ball outside off stump and Hughes is through the shot early again.

44.3

Malinga to Hughes, 1 run, another slower ball angled across, but Hughes is wise to it this time. Strokes that to the sweeper cover and puts Maxwell on strike

44.4

Malinga to Maxwell, 2 runs, attempted yorker that is again a little short. Maxwell clears the front leg and drills that to deep cover.

44.5

Malinga to Maxwell, 1 run, slower short ball, and Maxwell gets away with a baseball-style bunt. He was shaping to pull that but realised it was too slow, and just hung the bat out. The ball took a top edge and landed safely in the infield

44.6

Malinga to Hughes, 1 run, yet another slower ball and another one that almost yields a wicket. Hughes clears the front leg and tries to smash that through the offside, but is fooled by the lack of pace again. The mishit lands just short of cover

45.3

Kulasekara to Maxwell, 1 run, dropped! Tough chance though. Slower length ball outside off stump and Maxwell swings hard at that. Mahela at mid on gets fingertips to it as he attempts to pull the ball down, but he can't hold the catch. Saves a boundary though.

46.3

Malinga to Maxwell, 1 leg bye, slower short ball, and he's through the shot early again. Hits him on the side and the batsmen take a leg bye

46.4

Malinga to Hughes, 1 run, slower ball again, fuller this time. Hughes carves that to deep point.

46.5

Malinga to Maxwell, no run, slower again, short outside off stump and Hughes drags that onto the leg side, but straight to the fielder at a straight-ish midwicket

Malinga to Maxwell, OUT, another slower ball, an full. Maxwell trying to smash that over the top, but he's undone by the lack of pace again, and this time the top edge sails high enough for a fielder to settle under it at extra cover.

47.1

Mathews to Henriques, 1 run, wide and short, Henriques hits that into the deep on the offside and turns the strike over

47.2

Mathews to Hughes, 2 runs, Hughes makes room and hits a length ball on the stumps wide of deep cover for a couple

47.3

Mathews to Hughes, FOUR, a slower ball again but Hughes is reading them well now. Length and on the stumps, and Hughes swings that onto the leg side. Goes flat and fast and almost over the fence.

47.4

Mathews to Hughes, FOUR, beautifully played. Full and outside off, Hughes just gets low and directs that fine of short third man for four. He's playing a gem here.

47.5

Mathews to Hughes, 1 leg bye, short ball, and I think that was the slower one, Hughes can't get bat on it and it hits him. The batsmen take a leg bye

47.6

Mathews to Henriques, 1 run, fullish ball, hit to mid off

End of over 48 (13 runs) Australia 231/5 (RR: 4.81)
MC Henriques    2* (2b)      AD Mathews    7-0-44-0

48.1

Malinga to Henriques, 1 run, slower ball again and Henriques just knocks that into the off side and gets Hughes on strike

A lot of slower balls from Sri Lanka. This pitch is a little slow, and they've largely been effective.

48.2

Malinga to Hughes, 1 run, Short of a length outisde off stump, punched to deep cover

48.3

Malinga to Henriques, 1 run, slow and on the stumps again, turned into the on side for one.

48.4

Malinga to Hughes, 1 run, slow again, Hughes tries to cut it but gets and under edge. The batsmen scamper a single and there's a chance of an overthrow, but Hughes can't turn in time.

48.5

Malinga to Henriques, no run, 139kph, full and hit straight to the backward point fielder

48.6

Malinga to Henriques, 1 run, slower again, and full outside off. Henriques gets a top edge, but it lands well short of third man

End of over 49 (5 runs) Australia 236/5 (RR: 4.81)
MC Henriques    5* (6b)      SL Malinga    10-1-49-1

Kulasekara to bowl the last

49.1

Kulasekara to Henriques, 2 runs, full toss on the stumps, drilled wide of long on, and the batsmen take two

49.2

Kulasekara to Henriques, 1 run, full and on the stumps again, hit to long off, but to the fielder this time.

49.3

Kulasekara to Hughes, no run, length ball, and a charging Hughes can only get that as far as the bowler. Retreats quickly to the crease.

49.4

Kulasekara to Hughes, FOUR, full toss angled in, Hughes stays deep in his crease and swings that over midwicket and to the legside fence.

49.5

Kulasekara to Hughes, 3 runs, very well timed straight drive there to an overpitched delivery on the stumps. Thisara Perera runs around to cut it off just short of the boundary.

49.6

Kulasekara to Henriques, 1 run, full again and drilled hard to sweeper cover. Just a single off the last ball.

Super finish from Australia, who at one stage looked like they mightn't make 220. Hughes guided the innings brilliantly with an unbeaten 138. The pitch is a slow one, so this won't be an easy run chase.

Grant: "Perfectly paced innings from Hughes. He's shown a lot of maturity today." Hard to argue with that - though he did have some luck when the ball hit the stumps and didn't dislodge the bails. He wasn't hitting the ball particularly well at the start of his innings, but got everything purring nicely at the end.

Join us in a bit for Sri Lanka's innings. They've been patchy with the bat in this series, so it could be an interesting finish.
