James Fleming, the well-known Scottish cricketer and curler, died in an Edinburgh hospital on September 4, the eve of his 61st birthday. From a very early age he spent every available moment with a bat or ball in his hand and his enthusiasm for cricket lasted all his life. He was twice capped for Scotland in 1926, against Australia and Ireland, and was truly an allrounder, perhaps the best in Scotland. A useful bat, with a not out 50 against the Gentlemen of Ireland, an outstanding wicketkeeper, and a good slow bowler he interested some County Clubs when at the peak of his career. There are few grounds in Scotland on which he has not played and he was known at almost every County ground in England. As well as being a natural cricketer, `Jimmy', as he was known to everyone, was a natural organiser, and many charities were helped by the games and tours he arranged. Almost ten years ago he used this organising ability to start The Cricket Society of Scotland and by his energy and drive overcame many difficulties and brought much pleasure to Scottish Cricket followers.
