Ian King was Queensland's first Aboriginal player since Eddie Gilbert in the 1930s, but unlike Gilbert he had a smooth action . He forced his way into the state side with strong grade performances, initially in Sydney and then, after he returned to Queensland because of homesickness, Brisbane. He fell in love with Perth after playing there and moved to Western Australia, turning his back on the first-class game. King's nicknames derived from his liking for colourful clothes (Rainbow) and a striking resemblance to Sammy Davis Jnr (Sammy).
