Shaun Tait grabbed a career-best seven wickets but Queensland's Andy Bichel quickly ruined any chance of South Australia winning the Pura Cup match at the Adelaide Oval.
Chasing 446, South Australia were in trouble at 4 for 26 after Bichel collected 3 for 1 in 17 balls. Jack Smith eased the damage with a rapid half-century, the home side's first of the match, but by stumps they had only five wickets remaining and 308 runs to make.
Rain delayed play until 45 minutes after lunch, but when it started Tait added four wickets to his three on day two, beating his previous best of 5 for 39 against Victoria last month. "It feels a bit funny, this one," Tait said of his 7 for 99. "It doesn't seem like I earned it somehow. I didn't bowl that well, really."
Tait first picked up Andrew Symonds, then bowled Bichel and had Wade Seccombe caught by the wicketkeeper Graham Manou. Nathan Hauritz was his final wicket to end the innings.
