Greg Chappell in the running for Australia coach

Greg Chappell, the former Australia captain who is currently coaching India, has been shortlisted as one of the candidates to replace John Buchanan as the national coach. Buchanan's contract ends after next year's World Cup in the West Indies and Allan Border, a Cricket Australia board member, confirmed the selection process was underway.

Chappell, Moody and Whatmore - all are former Australia players currently mentoring national sides - are tipped for the post alongside Tim Nielsen, the Academy head coach. "John has decided that after the World Cup he is going to be moving on", Border told The Herald Sun. "Tom Moody, Tim Nielsen, Greg Chappell are in the mix, Dav Whatmore is now coaching Bangladesh and he was a long-term coach at Sri Lanka. We've got a lot of good candidates for a tough job."

Chappell's contract with the Indian board also expires after the World Cup and it's uncertain whether it will be renewed. Whatmore served two stints as coach of Sri Lanka, and was instrumental in the team's turnaround in 1996, when they won the World Cup for the first time. He took over in Bangladesh in 2003, and the side has shown some improvement under his tenure, which included an ODI upset against Australia last year.
