Damien Wright caused the early trouble before his team-mates provided the support as Western Australia were dismissed for 211 on the opening day in Melbourne. Wright captured the first four wickets as Victoria controlled proceedings and suffocated the Warriors, whose brightest moments came during David Bandy's half-century.

After sending the visitors in, Victoria didn't breakthrough until Wright picked up Shaun Marsh and Wes Robinson, leaving them at 2 for 40. Wright came back after lunch to claim Marcus North and Luke Pomersbach for single figures before help arrived. Adam Voges fell to Clint McKay on 4 and Western Australia were 6 for 136 when Bandy was lbw not offering a shot to Andrew McDonald.

While his team-mates preferred a defensive outlook, Bandy, who was shifted up to No. 3, was intent on attack and picked up 10 fours and a six in his 66. Luke Ronchi added 32 but contributions from the debutant Josh Mangan and Brett Dorey, who both made 24, were needed to push the Warriors past 200.

Wright, an off-season buy from Tasmania, picked up 4 for 42 from 25 overs in an impressive display on a tough surface. Dirk Nannes captured three victims to shut down the innings while McKay had 2 for 40. At stumps the Bushrangers were 0 for 9 after four overs.
