Ricky Ponting believes Nathan Hauritz is a "lock-in" for the Ashes, despite the emergence of Steven Smith as a promising spinning allrounder on the recent tour of England. Hauritz missed the England trip with a foot injury but he has resumed running and Ponting is looking forward to having the offspinner available for October's two-Test tour of India.
"I've spoken a bit to Nathan over the last couple of weeks," Ponting told reporters in Melbourne. "He has started running again which is a good sign, without pain in his foot. He started bowling again last week.
"I will be doing a lot of work with him over the next few weeks. I'll be facing a lot of him considering we've got [Graeme] Swann and Harbhajan [Singh] to confront over the next few months. Is he a lock-in? I think so. What he's done over the last 12 or 18 months as our number one spinner has been of the highest quality. With him back to full fitness I think he'll get himself back into the side again."
In the 12 months from the start of the last Ashes, only Mitchell Johnson took more Test wickets for Australia than Hauritz's 43 at 31.67. Hauritz was especially impressive at home against Pakistan, when he took his first two Test five-wicket hauls, and he will be an important part of the attack in India.
His spin competition in the immediate future will come from Smith, who filled the role against Pakistan and collected three wickets at 27.33. Smith also impressed with his batting, striking an entertaining 77 in the second Test at Headingley, but he could be a casualty for the first Test against India due to Hauritz's return.
Marcus North's disappointing winter tour has left him a little more vulnerable, although Ponting is a strong supporter of North at No. 6, and does not believe Smith could play as a specialist batsman. However, having Shane Watson's medium pace in the armoury could allow the Australians to consider playing two spinners.
"Steven came along really well in the two Tests that he played in the UK," Ponting said. "We saw towards the end of the Headingley Test his ability with the bat and also his willingness to be aggressive with the ball. That's not an easy thing to do for a young legspinner to maintain that aggression.
"He's a work in progress but the more games that he can play is obviously going to be better for him and he'll learn all the time. With Shane Watson in our side it gives us the flexibility to be able to look at playing two spinners."

hauritz spin against india??? wow so india has won the series even before they play. i think punter has lost confidence in m. clarke the best spinner for aussie against india . why punter wants to ruin hauritz like krezja.
Posted by Craigh on (August 17 2010, 11:21 AM GMT)Come on Tou English Supporters you think you a good enough team to beat Aust 5-0 look at the quality of opssition you are playing and on your own wickets which suit your bowlers. they will be playing on our wickets with a diffrent ball then they currenlty use. Yes I admit they playing good cricket but I still beleive there batting is vunrable to in last two tests they have lost 7 for just over 80 runs it wont be 5-0 to aussie's this this time a 3-2 result to Aust is likely senario just remeber England havent won series here since 1986 we will have wait see if they have learnt any lessons from the 5-0 flogging they got last time.
Posted by 2_pot_screamer on (August 17 2010, 06:45 AM GMT)I don't see why there is all this rush to get Smith in the side. Give him a another year or two in state cricket to develop. He is only 21 for christs sake.As for Krezja, he can't even hold down a state spot with his bowling let alone play test. Hauritz can play a good containing role in India and against the Poms which is the traditional role of the offie. When Smith is bit more experienced and developed then he can take over.
Posted by ToMegaTherion1986 on (August 17 2010, 02:40 AM GMT)I'm glad Ponting is sticking with Hauritz for the moment, he may not be a match winner on his own, but he works hard, he is a good bowler and guess what, he takes wickets regularly. Any spinner who maintains a test average of 30 is doing very well, especially in the case of Nathan Hauritz when you consider where he has come from in recent years. Of course the long term eyes should be on Smith, but for the moment he still has a lot to learn, and Hauritz is the best man for the job. Krezja has fallen away significantly, Doherty hasn't done so well in First Class matches and McGain is just too old to be a long term prospect, Casson has barely played a game for NSW last season, Bailey is in the same boat, Cullen is gone, Heal isn't even a close started for WA, Holland is a long way for International standard, he has a lot to learn still. White barely bowls anymore, North is a part-timer who can do ok sometimes. Find someone better than Hauritz and can prove it then we'll talk further.
Posted byKrejza is useless. Anybody stating otherwise is a Mug who claims its better to have an attacking bowling than a defensive. Well while that might be the case. Krejza isnt an attacking option, hes a loose cannon that had a turner in Nagpur to get all but one of his wickets. At least with Haury, you know what your going to get. Inconstant isnt a kind mistress in test cricket and thats EXACTLY what Krazy Krejza is, Not in Australia. North will be dropped for the ashes unless he does a Hussey in India.
Posted by SFay on (August 17 2010, 00:11 AM GMT)@512fm Thats a load of balony. Check teh stats before you start mouthing off. I know the numbers from Hauritzs 18 wickets against Pakistan (yes I actually go and check my numbers before I comment), but I bet you have no idea. Most of his wickets were close to the pitch ( c&b,stumped, caught slips and short leg). Had a few caught at cover and point. And then 3 or 4 caught mid on/mid off. Seems like the usual spinners bag to me
Posted by thebrownie on (August 16 2010, 21:21 PM GMT)I will eat my hat, if Hauritz picks up his wickets at an average of < 40 runs. Will the Ozzies please focus on the India tour first? At the end of it, Hauritz might retire! Can't wait to see Sehwag vs Hauritz. I bet there will be a six in his first over.
Posted by 512fm on (August 16 2010, 18:41 PM GMT)im sorry but there is no way hauritz can claim those wickets against Pakistan they were just trying to smash him out o fthe park every over he got so many caught at mid off. teams like india and england wont do that so wheres his wickets gonna come???
Posted by mautan on (August 16 2010, 18:18 PM GMT)Jason Kezja is a far better off-spinner than Nauritz. No doubt about that. Ponting is playing a but favourite here. Krezja had 10 wickets on debut in India against a tremendous batting lineup, wit no support on the other side.Ponting never came out in support for this talented bowler.
Posted by HusseyFan on (August 16 2010, 17:30 PM GMT)Australia's best bet at winning is in including Steve Smith. Leg spin is more difficult to play and he is a good bat.
