Scorecard
Australian supporters have been desperate to see big runs from a batsman named Hussey in the lead-up to the Ashes, but it was Michael's younger brother David who hit form on the opening day of Victoria's Sheffield Shield contest in Sydney. While David Hussey, a limited-overs specialist at international level, is not being discussed as a contender to face England, he reminded everyone of his talent with an unbeaten 102 as Victoria collected 4 for 211 before the final session was washed out.
The New South Wales players expected to be in the Test XI had quieter days, with Shane Watson taking care of Michael Hill on 79, and Nathan Hauritz leaking runs over a couple of spells. Hauritz had his first serious first-class bowl of the home season and was punished whenever he missed his mark.
Hill launched Hauritz for two early sixes as the offspinner gave up 57 runs in nine overs, which wasn't an encouraging return with the first Test two weeks away. His best chance of a breakthrough came when Hill was missed at long-on by Mitchell Starc.
Starc, who took four wickets in Sunday's ODI against Sri Lanka, was again impressive with the ball and removed Rob Quiney in the opening over and Cameron White (1) in the second session. He could have added Hussey on 71, but Watson dropped the ball above his head.
Hussey entered at 2 for 18, following the lbw of Aaron Finch, and took his time before lunch. After the break he started to expand, scoring 75 in the second session, and had struck 17 fours from his 128 balls when the rain arrived. He will be intent on outshining the Test players again on the second day.
