Australia to play Afghanistan in UAE

ESPNcricinfo staff
52

Australia will play Afghanistan for the first time next month, as a warm-up for the series against Pakistan in the UAE. Although the details of the Pakistan series are still being finalised, Cricket Australia has confirmed that a one-off match with Afghanistan, most likely a one-day international, will be held ahead of the Pakistan series in an effort to assist with Afghanistan's cricketing development.

If the game is an ODI it will be Afghanistan's second against an ICC full member, after they lost to Pakistan in Sharjah in February. Although Afghanistan did not qualify for last year's World Cup they have one-day international status valid until 2013 and have had wins over Kenya, Canada, Netherlands and Scotland, having won more than half of the games they have played.

"Everyone in world cricket have been really impressed with how cricket has flourished in Afghanistan, despite its pressing national problems," James Sutherland, the chief executive of Cricket Australia, said. "As an ICC member, CA strongly supports world cricket's ambition for cricket to continue to develop as a global sport and that, combined with the strong relationships between our two countries, encouraged us to look at how we might recognise and encourage Afghanistan by playing them on the field."

Afghanistan will be part of the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September, where they have found themselves in a very difficult group with India and England. They also played in the 2010 World T20 and will be competing in the Under-19 World Cup in August, to be held in Australia.

The ICC president Alan Isaac welcomed the news of the game. "This fixture supports ICC's initiative to provide more opportunities for our top ranking Associate/Affiliate Member (AM) teams to play against better opposition," he said.

"We have already seen Pakistan play Afghanistan in Sharjah this year in a high quality match and we must commend Australia for creating this opportunity. It has always been willing to contribute to development by playing against AM nations as it recently showed when it played against Ireland."

The date and venue for the Afghanistan-Australia match will not be confirmed until Pakistan and Australia finalise the structure of their series. The PCB has proposed a series of three ODIs and three T20s, despite the ICC granting permission for a six-match T20 series due to the extreme heat during the daytime in the UAE in August and September.

  • MaxG9 on July 2, 2012, 14:26 GMT

That is great news for Afghan cricket. And congrats. to CA whatever their other motives maybe in arranging this match. Can the other boards, especially Bangladesh, Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka, India step up. please? Can ICC give incentives to these Boards for doing so?

  • Sidd_Cric on July 2, 2012, 14:05 GMT

Australia are showing they are true champs. They also helped Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in past too. It shows they are not like some other boards.

  • Timmuh on July 2, 2012, 13:34 GMT

That is a first. Australia actually doing the right thing by a second tier nation. And all after just playing against Ireland. Hopefully it is the start of a broader perspective by our board andmore chances for the smaller (in cricketing terms) nations, and better things for Afghan cricket. Now, if we could that more often and give fair treatment to the likes of Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. But that really is a bit much to expect of CA (or the ECB or BCCI).

  • jb633 on July 2, 2012, 12:53 GMT

Great news for Afgan. There was a documentary aired in England with regards to the Afghan cricket side and it really was eye opening. I would advise anyone that can find it online to watch it. It showed the struggles the players and coaches have come through to get where they are today. I really hope they can do well. They have some good players at present. Good luck

  • getsetgopk on July 2, 2012, 9:58 GMT

Not sure the Australians did as a favor to Afghan cricket, they wanted warm up games, no body will be around to play Aus in August they might as well cash in on some doing the needy some 'favor' but great news for Afghanistan anyways. Go Afgha!!!

  • on July 2, 2012, 9:37 GMT

Well, Afghan cricket lovers were waiting for these moments for years, and it looks like dreams come true. As an afghan cricket fan I would like to thank Australian cricket board for this opportunity and request them to help Afghan Cricket Board (ACB) specially in coaching of players.

  • on July 2, 2012, 9:28 GMT

I didn't expect this but great to hear such wonderful news and happy for Afghanistan. Like I said before teams like Australia, England, Bangladesh, Pakistan and probably everyone else with the exception of India are willing to help and play such opposition and that's why India are nothing special in Cricket and need fewer teams so they can compete at the highest level mind you that's still not working for them. Hopefully some time teams like Bangladesh and Zimbabwe will be willing to invite Afghanistan for a a 3 T20s and up to 3ODIs match series so that all are getting plenty of Cricket. However I still feel Australia should've also played a one-off T20 against Afghanistan because they too are competing at World T20 Championship.

  • on July 2, 2012, 8:37 GMT

  • on July 2, 2012, 6:22 GMT

It's big time now to include Afghanistan in Asia Cup. They were not invited into this year's asia cup. Pakistan should play atleast one ODI every year with them like England plays Ireland. They should be asked to play FC matches in pakistani/indian domestic structure.

  • on July 2, 2012, 5:40 GMT

great news for all Afghan nation , I am very thankful to Austrillian CB and ICC for providing such a opportunity for Afghan national cricket team, Cricket is getting developing day by day in Afghanistan and it is expanding to the all provinces of Afghanistan, even in a very far rural area , cricket is played by Afghan children and youth.Although there is not much facilities for Afghan cricketers in Afghanistan, they have a big interest in the cricket. Afghanistan cricket board is trying to provide the cricket facilities these days . I am sure Afghanistan cricket team will show their talent to cricket world in this match.
