Redbacks snap wins drought

ESPNcricinfo staff

South Australia 112 and 237 (Head 75, Christian 50, Butterworth 3-40 Bird 3-48) defeated Tasmania 138 and 196 (Butterworth 57, Richardson 4-34) by 15 runs
Scorecard

South Australia claimed their first Sheffield Shield victory in 21 matches with a tense 15-run defeat of Tasmania in Hobart - coincidentally the same team and venue where the Redbacks last won, in November 2010.

The Tigers lost regular wickets throughout their chase of 212 to win, but the 9th wicket pair of Luke Butterworth and Ben Hilfenhaus crept to within 18 runs before both lost their wickets in the space of two runs to the SA captain Johan Botha and the allrounder Dan Christian.

Playing his first four-day match of the season, Kane Richardson had earlier scooped four wickets to set SA on the path to victory. Before Butterworth and Hilfenhaus, the most substantial partnership of the innings had been a union of 47 between the opener Ed Cowan and the captain George Bailey.

Cowan was out for 23, meaning he will enter the first Test against South Africa with a run of starts and no major scores this summer.

Don't really see a problem with Lyon bowling so few overs. He's been pumped this year, was a green pitch, the quicks were doing the job in general and Botha only bowled more than Lyon because he took a couple. Xaj Doherty only bowled in in the second dig and only a few overs too.

I mean, we're not talking about underage cricket where you make sure everyone gets a roll, it's professional cricket and if the conditions suit the quicks, the spinners aren't going to get much of a go. Nothing else in it.

Always thought SA looked better than their Shield results suggested so hope this is no flash-in-the-pan. Good to see Richardson back too. And a 50 to Christian.

Cant believe that Lyon only bowled 4 overs in the match. Botha helping his South African counter parts?

@crow_eater on (November 03 2012, 07:32 AM GMT) - love the line about Richo! Masterstroke from Berry. == == == Well I think I said that Botha was an underwhelming choice as an import, when he was unveiled a while back. I think I also said that if Sth Oz win 2 Shield games this season then he would be a good decision - Sth Ozzys are halfway there!

Congratulations SA! Low scoring match, a bowlers pitch perhaps? A couple of Aus A batsmen putting their hand up (albeit on a gentle pitch) so Cowan might be looking over his shoulder (wouldn't mind seeing him at 3 if Watson is out)

Well that was a long time coming but good to get a win under the belt! Never doubted Richo at first drop & to get a bag of wickets too, terrific effort all round fellas.

The only problem I see with this (I'm a South Aussie) is that Lyon bowled FOUR overs in the match...
