Phillip Hughes scored his first century of the summer as South Australia finished the second day in Melbourne in a strong position against Victoria. The Bushrangers had been dismissed for 346 earlier in the day as the left-arm seamer Gary Putland took a career-best 7 for 64, and by stumps South Australia were 2 for 244, with Hughes on 127 and Callum Ferguson on 48.
Hughes finished the day well clear at the top of this season's Sheffield Shield run tally but until this innings he hadn't made it past the nineties. Hughes was typically strong outside off stump and struck 18 boundaries, giving the Redbacks the perfect start as they sought a first-innings lead.
Hughes and Sam Raphael (38) put on 80 for the opening wicket as Victoria's bowlers struggled to have the same impact as Putland, who was dangerous and economical. He had Cameron White caught for his overnight score of 88 and picked up two further wickets late in the innings, including John Hastings for an entertaining 80 off 98 balls.

That Putland looks all right, with all due respect to DJ Worrall & co. how the hell has Putland not been playing? There's another fellow, P.George who bowls all right as well.....maybe Mr. Berry could try him as well?? @Macca_mat- that's not the real 'Hyclass'...it's 'HycIass'.
Posted by Mary_786 on (November 25, 2012, 4:23 GMT)Well said Hyclass, good to see you acknowleding Khawaja and Hughes as they have both earned your respect by getting runs this season.
Posted by Meety on (November 24, 2012, 21:41 GMT)@Lewis_of_Macksville on (November 24 2012, 13:08 PM GMT) - well actually I'm a Cowan supporter. In both innings he did his job, blunting a world class attack. I think it's fair to say that Quinney has lost his window. @Jono Makim - well said! == == == Said yesterday that Putland is tracking very well. His stats are now basically 4 wickets a match. On shield performances ONLY, he is the best Ozzy left armer atm!
Posted byTimely knock from Hughes. Not to say he went past Khawaja, as i'm not even sure he was behind Khawaja. Just good to see the young hopefuls stating their respective cases!
Posted by Edwards_Anderson on (November 24, 2012, 13:08 GMT)Quiney's selection was a joke, Hughes is showing how it should be done, where have all the Quiney and Cowan supporters gone.
Posted by hycIass on (November 24, 2012, 12:05 GMT)Hughes and Khawaja are the future of Aus cricket, as leading shield scorers they have to be bought into the Aussie side as we can't keep repeating our top order woes. I never want to hear Quiney's name in selection again, his failures on a flat Adelaide pitch were not acceptable.
