Steven Smith scored a timely half-century as Australia's selectors consider their Test squad to tour India, helping New South Wales to first-innings points in their match against Western Australia. Moises Henriques was also in form and at stumps was unbeaten on 62 alongside Steve O'Keefe on 16, and at 6 for 263, the Blues had a 21-run lead over the Warriors.

On a slow pitch that most batsmen found hard work, Smith batted for more than three hours for his 72 and struck nine boundaries before he was dismissed by Jason Behrendorff. Several New South Wales batsmen made starts, including Scott Henry (39) and Peter Nevill (26), but both were removed by the debutant spinner Ashton Agar.

Henriques struck six fours and one six in his innings and for much of the time was batting alongside Smith in a 72-run partnership. Earlier, the Warriors had added only 10 runs to their overnight total before losing their final wicket, which was claimed by O'Keefe, who ended up with 4 for 55.

SOK has to go to India. He is a wicket taker, he can be economical and tie down an end if that is required, he adds valuable depth to the batting (which could be telling with the way the top order has been struggling and Hussey retiring), he's a good fielder and also adds some leadership. I'm amazed with the rotating door policy for spinners in the last few years, until they got stuck on Lyon, that he hasn't been given a go yet.

@nthuq on (January 25 2013, 14:29 PM GMT) - are you aware that Hughes is the leading run scorer in the Shield by well over 100 runs? @I think it is fantastic that the pitch played like that. Good dress rehearsal for India. How did Agar look?

Please don't talk up Smith's India chances. The guy isn't even close to international standard.

@Meety, I got down to the last session, the pitch was very slow. the balls were keeping low (sound familiar?) & Smith, Mo & SOK applied themselves with great diligence. It is going to get harder to bat on (IMHO) although rain is predicted today (most likely later in the day, I also need to win our game too). Mo looked good, it appears his is making the switch from ODI to shield well. SOK. I am not holding my hopes for him, he hasn't been in the mix so far.

Get SOK in there. He's a state captain too - which is what pundits have been complaining that we've been lacking for a while now. I don't care what excuses he gives, Steve Smith's lack of technique and application means his fifties are useless until he starts converting at least 1/3 into hundreds as a similarly 'technique-less' Hughes does.

"...O'Keefe, who ended up with 4 for 55..." - is there any real need to debate the 2nd spinner? Well done to Henriques & Smith - although really, I want to be happy about 100s, not 50s.
