South Australia 8 for 239 (Hughes 120, Sheridan 3-44) trail Victoria 319 (Sayers 6-49) by 80 runs

Phillip Hughes celebrates his century, South Australia v Victoria, Sheffield Shield, Adelaide, 2nd day, January 25, 2013

Phillip Hughes kept up the fine form he displayed in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, scoring a century on the second day of South Australia's Sheffield Shield match against Victoria. However, his efforts looked like being insufficient to gain first-innings points for the Redbacks, who at stumps were still 80 runs behind with only two wickets in hand.

Batting at No.3, Hughes made 120 including ten fours and two sixes and his scoring was all the more remarkable given that the next best was 22 not out from Joe Mennie, who was still at the crease at stumps alongside Chadd Sayers (2 not out). Hughes was eventually caught behind off the bowling of James Pattinson, who in his return from injury took 2 for 36 from 12 overs.

Will Sheridan collected 3 for 44 for the Bushrangers, including the important wicket of Callum Ferguson for 13. The day had started superbly for the Redbacks, who claimed the final four Victorian wickets for the addition of only five runs. Sayers finished with a career-best 6 for 49.

Khawaja to go as replaement for Mike hussey with perhaps Ferguson to back him up, though a good score from Ferguson in the second innings of the shield game will help alot against a good Victorian attack.

Most important thing to come out of this match is the (so far) successful return of James Pattinson. So far so good, fingers crossed for the rest of this match and the following games. It will be interesting to see how be holds up in the second SA innings. Good luck Patto.

@John Ide - I am a Ferguson fan, but I think he is having a typical Callum season. I would go Lyon & SO'K with 3 seamers, SO'K batting @ #7.

@John Ide Your point is well taken about Hughes but there are other things to consider. He seemed to handle those conditions o.k. in Worcester. When he failed in the 3 Odi's no other batter showed much either. In his last 2 tons the conditions could not have been so great as he accounted for over half his teams runs and nobody else found batting easy.

Agreed there Meety, but it still scares me a bit watching Hughes snicking the white ball bowled by Kulasakara in seam conditions. These are the conditions Hughes will come across in England with Anderson and Finn firing in the moving Duke ball and who are way more dangerous than the Kula.

The only other young guns with this much talent are Ferguson (having a crappy shield season), Khawaja and maybe Doolan of Tassie. With regards to India, all commentator were yelling for the X-man Doherty to partner the Lyon of Adelaide. Howevera look at Lyon's figures here are depressing. I feel the selectors should take a punt and send S. Okeefe as 3rd spinner on the dustbowls, who can fill in as the all-rounder needed in India.

Top stuff Hughes. With the exception of Punter's Shield form - he is a class above all the other batsmen in the Shield.
