Tasmania 6 for 310 (Ponting 138*, Krejza 71*, Hazlewood 3-64) v New South Wales

In his first innings at first-class level since retiring from Test cricket, Ricky Ponting showed that he still has plenty to offer, scoring an unbeaten 138 for Tasmania on the first day against New South Wales in Hobart. At stumps, the Tigers were 6 for 310 with Ponting still at the crease alongside Jason Krejza, who was on 71, and it was a fine recovery after Tasmania struggled to 6 for 132, meaning the Ponting-Krejza stand had reached 178 at the close.

Josh Hazlewood picked up three wickets, Trent Copeland collected two and Chris Tremain one before Ponting and Krejza came together. Ponting brought up his 79th first-class century and his second of the Sheffield Shield season, while Krejza passed fifty for the ninth time in first-class cricket.

It continued Ponting's remarkable Shield summer - even more incredible given the struggles he had during the Test series against South Africa. In five matches, Ponting has scored 493 runs at an average of 164.33, and he has only been dismissed three times from seven innings.

Is OKeefe injured? Or has he just given up the game as no matter how he performs he will never get selected for higher honors?

@FFL... yes, Cook has had '1', good series, and he is an ever-improving batsman who may turn out to be your best ever, but that doesn't make him great yet. I truly love how you point to statistics to make your points without looking at others. Check out Anderson's Ashes stats in ENG. Not boots-quaking reading for a batsman, but that's not to say he wont be good. And your love child Swanny. Not great Ashes threat either going by your beloved stats. Keep up the banter, its good fun. ENG with an edge for the Ashes, but its only an edge.

@sawifan, "Such a pity ol' ENG can't produce a match-winning batsman "

There's this contest played between Eng and Aus: It's called the Ashes..Go check it out then let us know how England go with the bat. I'll give you a starting hint: 766. :)

cook ,kp and anderson to destroy australia in the ashes. c'mon warner is not a test stuff.Bring on kwaja. Don't bring on ponting .I agree he is one of the worst behaved sportsmen of the century and has no respect for others.same happened to him.I love the day when he licked the ground off king kallis bowling.He was humiliated and kicked out of the side. Even sachin is going to face the same farewell if he doesn't quit early. But Kallis has shown lots of promise these years I think he has a peak season waiting for him .he will soon be celebrated for all his efforts .Hail the king kallis

Bring back Ponting! Oh wait, he's one of the worst behaved sportsman ever to have played the game, so...bring him back anyway! Aus desperately need him right now!

@Smudgeon and Meety, Not just Doolan, but Cosgrove too. If anyone was just an attitude change away from making the next level, he is your man. Career average 43, 22 centuries, 28 years old, on the face of it he´s only a run of form away from being a test cricketer. He needs to shed 20KG´s and step up! Ponting could be the man to show him the way.

Personally, I'd credit a rather weak domestic attack. A country's international bowling strength is representative of their domestic strength - enough said!!

its hard to understand what is going on with ponting.. he has made runs against top state level attacks on domestic pitches with spice.. yet in the test matches he seemed so tortured and unsure.. i think if huss had told people of his decision to want to retire earlier, it would have been worth keeping ponting on, especially given the thin batting stocks.. poor planning and bad luck has left aus with a gaping hole..

Not sure what to make of Pontings run in the shield this year. The problem is he was doing this in the run up to the SA series too. Maybe he was just no longer sharp enough to make those tough starts at the top level? Nice to see Hazlewood taking a few poles, i´m a huge wrap for him, twelve or eighteen months injury free would see him at the same level as Starc I think, if not better. He has one of the more repeatable, smoother actions of the young hopefuls, good pace and good height. Just stay on the park son!

@smudgeon on (February 6, 2013, 9:48 GMT) "...Wouldn't mind seeing him go on and demonstrate to the guys in Shield what the difference is between a mid-30s FC average and a 50+ Test average... " - YES PLEASE!!!!! I think Doolan could learn a lot & that could be a very important link for Oz cricket! re: Mowbray - doh!!!!!

The great man shouldn't have retired. I think the doubters got the best of him.
