South Australia's tail wagged all the the way to a significant first innings lead before Chadd Sayers and Joe Mennie again confounded the New South Wales batsmen to leave the Redbacks glimpsing victory after day two of the Sheffield Shield match at Adelaide Oval.

Jake Brown and Tim Ludeman both made half-centuries for the hosts to collect first innings points, then Mennie and Sayers added critical lower order runs to stretch the advantage - something the SA lower order has commonly struggled to do in tight situations.

Batting a second time, the Blues were quickly in the mire, Sayers repeating his success on the first morning and Mennie following up. A quartet of starts followed in the NSW middle order, Peter Nevill getting as far as 36, but regular wickets kept SA on course for an outright win.

The Redbacks' only concern arrived late in the day when it was revealed Sayers had complained of discomfort around his ribs, leaving him a doubtful member of the bowling attack on day three.
