New South Wales 7 for 291 (Carters 104, Rohrer 77, Behrendorff 3-43) v Western Australia

Ryan Carters scored a century to lead New South Wales into a strong position but they slipped after his dismissal on the first day at the WACA Ground. Western Australia's bowlers took four wickets for 57 runs to reduce NSW to 291 for 7 at stumps.

Carters lost two team-mates cheaply after NSW won the toss but found a steady partner in Ben Rohrer, who cracked 77 off 108 balls. They added 110 for the third wicket before Rohrer became the second of Jason Behrendorff's three wickets.

Carters fell after a half-century stand with Kurtis Patterson, after which Western Australia seamer Michael Hogan took two more wickets to erode NSW's advantage.

Yeah, I think Ryan's best way to move up the ranks is his batting. Is a similar prospect to Silk I believe. Solid, takes time to build an innings. Good front foot defence.

Needs to rotate the strike more though. His innings yesterday was very much dots and fours. Hopefully learns from Rohrer and other older heads about this over the year or so. Could be an Aus A bolter.

His keeping, whilst solid, is not better than Nevill, Whiteman or Ludeman. Will always be a back-up in Shield but fine in 20/20. Better than Wade though...

Chris_P - Carters was a wicket-keeper but his best chance for further honours is as a batman and that is exactly how he is proceeding. The most improved batsman in Australia. As for Maddinson, he is out of form at the moment but that didn't stop Doolan and Marsh getting the call up for Australia and Maddinson is infinitely better than both!

And for all those who call for Maddinson's inclusion, this is the reason he needs to have a season or 2 of consistent run scoring. @Rahul Venkat, I guess he could but really doubt it. He is a wicket-keeper, first & foremost with a very solid batting technique that can slot anywhere in the top 7.

Carters very impressive ... Could be a future test opener .. Cuts off all the risks and makes the bowlers bowl to his areas !
