Ryan Carters scored a century to lead New South Wales into a strong position but they slipped after his dismissal on the first day at the WACA Ground. Western Australia's bowlers took four wickets for 57 runs to reduce NSW to 291 for 7 at stumps.
Carters lost two team-mates cheaply after NSW won the toss but found a steady partner in Ben Rohrer, who cracked 77 off 108 balls. They added 110 for the third wicket before Rohrer became the second of Jason Behrendorff's three wickets.
Carters fell after a half-century stand with Kurtis Patterson, after which Western Australia seamer Michael Hogan took two more wickets to erode NSW's advantage.
