Peter Forrest led a solid batting display from Queensland on the second day in Melbourne as they sought the victory they needed to earn a place in the Sheffield Shield final. Forrest finished the day unbeaten on 88 alongside captain James Hopes on 22 and at 5 for 285, Queensland's lead had extended to 75 runs after Hopes completed a six-wicket haul in the morning.

If Queensland can manage a win over Victoria they will have a very strong chance of playing in the Shield final, given that South Australia and Western Australia were both struggling in their matches. Victoria began the day at 8 for 197 and added only 13 more runs as Hopes picked up two more wickets to finish with 6 for 40, and a 70-run opening stand gave the Bulls a solid start.

Opener Joe Burns made 71 before he and Usman Khawaja (20) both fell in one John Hastings over, but Forrest and Chris Lynn were then able to put on 132 runs for the fourth wicket to secure first-innings points. Lynn fell for 55 but Forrest was within sight of a century by stumps.

How good is Jimmy Hopes. He just keeps on keeping on - always takes wickets and almost always contributes with the bat. Another example like Hogg and Hodge - would never let Australia down in ODIs, if called up!

Too many 70's for Burnsy ! Remember Lynn got a hundred and a fifty against the englishmen so he too has a FC century this year though he would ve liked a couple more given this is his breakthrough season !

@DylanBrah: Remember, Burns got stranded on 97 when his team collapsed, so he could be 2 : 5, which isn't too bad.

This season: Burns - ave. 46.91, 1 century (102), 6 fifties... Lynn - ave. 58.70, 0 centuries, 5 fifties ... nice averages, but would be nice if these two could convert some fifties into centuries...

again lynn gets 50 and gets out

9 FC centuries for forrest so far ! Pretty impressive ... But the average of 34 stands out disappointing ! For someone who showed so much composure at the top level, these are seriously underwhelming stats !

Good to see Forrest making the most of his form. He has been horribly inconsistent during his career but he has talent. Dissapointing to see Lynn fall again in the 50's, he's in good form but need hundreds. Burns less so, but same sort of problem though he is pretty good at conversion. However, good to see young talent stepping up.
