Scorecard

Fifties from Manoj Tiwary and Manish Pandey and a five-for from fast bowler Dhawal Kulkarni set up India A's comprehensive 70-run win over South Africa A in Darwin. India A took away five points from the game for the big victory margin.

Batting first, India A amassed a score of 7 for 326, riding on fifties from Pandey and Tiwary, who also shared a 124-run partnership for the third wicket. The pair were brisk at the crease - while Pandey's 91 came off 108 balls with seven fours and a six, Tiwary slammed 93 off 73 balls with 10 hits in all to the boundary.

Tiwary and Pandey received good support from the other Indian batsmen. Unmukt Chand scored a quick 47 to help India A recover from the early loss of Robin Uthappa. Ambati Rayudu and Sanju Samson also chipped in with cameos that ensured India A did not lose the momentum built by the big stand. The only South Africa A bowler to have an impact on the Indian innings was Marchant de Lange, who dismissed both Pandey and Tiwary on his way to figures of 5 for 64.

South Africa A's openers gave the side a good start with a partnership of 54 but the India A bowlers kept chipping away, picking up wickets in clusters. Kulkarni struck at key moments in the game, dismantling the threatening partnerships. He dismissed opener Heino Kuhn and then brought an important fifth-wicket stand between Farhaan Behardien and Justin Ontong to an end, removing Behardien, Simon Harmer and Ontong in quick succession. Parvez Rasool was also among the wickets for India with 2 for 48, which included the dismissal of top-scorer Reeza Hendricks (52), while Akshar Patel and Ambati Rayudu picked up a wicket each.

Manoj Tiwari and Uthappa are ready for senior roles.

  • cricketlover76 on July 23, 2014, 20:53 GMT

@StarHawk you hit the nail on the head. He is the person who re-defined the role of an opener in test match cricket. A true great who has sadly faded away for reasons unknown. Uthappa can be a backup wicketkeeper in t20 and 50 over cricket. Manoj Tiwary, dhawal Kulkarni should be in ODI team. playing X1 for england odi's : Dhawan Rohit Kohli tiwary Raina dhoni Jadeja Ashwin Dhawal Mohit bhuvi

  • pravineswar on July 23, 2014, 2:26 GMT

I think M.Tiwary should play ahead of Rohit Sharma at No.04 in ODI team. Dhawan, Rahane, Kohli, M.Tiwary, Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja, Ashwin , Zaheer, Mohit, Aaron. Rohit, Umesh, Bhuvi (or praveen) & Samson (or Naman) This will be good squad of 15 for WC. Zaheer needed for experience. I would also like to play Praveen instead of Bhuvi. Players like Vijay, Pujara, Bhuvi, Ishant & Shami should be allowed to play Test cricket for next few years to keep them fresh (especially fast bowlers). Bhuvi should be overloaded Test & ODI cricket else he will fall like other bowlers.

@Triple A, totally understand what you are saying about Uthappa. But Sehwag??? Flashy without depth? Please check out his test batting average before you say silly things. He's one of the best opening batsmen to ever play test cricket!

Why Kedar Jadhav is not given a chance yet ?

Good to see manoj tiwary get runs agressively and constanantly.dhawal kulakarni must be in odi squad.

  • Triple_A on July 22, 2014, 13:01 GMT

@CricketChat, totally agree. Uthappa feigns the appearance of having the technique to perform at the big stage against good oppositions, but lacks the mental strength to score big. He is one player who will repeatedly get opportunities in the national team because of his talent, but will fail to deliver when necessary. But all he needs is one innings of substance for his fans to want him to play in all India - England matches and be astonished that the selectors are so ignorant. Very similar to a Umesh or a Sehwag - flashy without depth

Indian A team has more all rounders than the Indian team! Where is Rishi Dhawan by the way?

  • chrismpofu on July 22, 2014, 12:40 GMT

Tiwary among runs is a good sign for Indian cricket.Kulkarni can be picked for the odi side.

Just noticed that Uthappa has been a consistant failure on this tour. I felt he always failed to take advantage of his chances. I am afraid he will be consigned to domestic and IPL cricket after thus run for failure for good. One of those unfortunate players who can't handle top level cricket.

  • Thuram3 on July 22, 2014, 12:12 GMT

I hope Marchant can stay injury-free, he can add on to our stock of quick bowlers...
