Richard Stanbury was educated at Shrewsbury School where he spent two years in the XI as a specialist wicketkeeper. In his final matches he was promoted to open the innings with some success, scoring a brace of forties. On leaving, he played twice for Somerset as an amateur, at a time the cash-strapped county needed as many of them as possible. On his debut against his own university, he scored 21 in a 70-minute stand which was not enough to save Somerset from defeat; a year later he made his second and final appearance in an innings defeat by Essex.
