Major-General Philip Sidney Whitcombe, who died on August 9, aged 95, was an amateur right-handed batsman and fast medium bowler who played a single match for Essex in 1922. He enjoyed little success, scoring 5 and 4 and taking 0 for 22 runs. While serving in India Whitcombe played three first-class matches for the Europeans against The Indians in Madras Presidency inter-communal matches. In the last of these, in January 1931, he scored 32 not out, his best score in first-class cricket. Whitcombe's overall first-class career record was 81 runs, average 16.20, but he failed to take a wicket.
