The solid, though not spectacular all rounder, formerly of Free State, joined Western Province for the 1997/8 season. Player's importance to WP will become more important as the international season gets underway and the competition for places starts in earnest. The right-handed bowler takes over from the successful Meyrick Pringle as the premier proponent of swing in the WP squad. Having plied his trade inland with limited success, he could expect to flourish with the increased number of games at the coast. With an increased emphasis on playing as many all-rounders as possible, Player's selection to the senior XI might rest with his ability to string together a couple of decent scores with the bat.
