The Ashes - 1st Test

Australia v England

Australia won by 277 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150  | Overs 151-200

0.1

Harmison to Langer, 1 wide, and it's wild and woolly, a massive wide taken by first slip. Welcome back to Australia, Steve

0.1

Harmison to Langer, no run, and it's down the leg side this time, but no wide signalled from the umpire.

0.2

Harmison to Langer, no run, much better, fuller and straighter and it raps Langer high up on the pad.

0.3

Harmison to Langer, no run, good ball right on middle stump, hurrying Langer - but Harmison still looks tentative, nervous, and hesitant here

0.4

Harmison to Langer, FOUR, yorker length and quick, Langer clips it past square leg and falls over in doing so...but still gets enough bat on it for four. Slippery pitch out there, bit of grass

0.5

Harmison to Langer, FOUR, outside off, driven on the up and it's edged past third slip and down to third man for four. Very edgy, Ashley Giles didn't have a hope of reaching it at gully

0.6

Harmison to Langer, no run, down the leg side and ignored by Langer

Australia 9/0   JL Langer 8* (6b 2x4)

2.1

Harmison to Langer, no run, very good ball on off stump, Langer is forced onto the front foot and defends it solidly.

2.2

Harmison to Langer, FOUR, very well bowled just short of a length forcing the drive from Langer who doesn't come forward sufficiently, edging it wide of gully and down to third man for four

2.3

Harmison to Langer, no run, on off stump this time, Langer tries to turn it to leg but without any timing

2.4

Harmison to Langer, no run, rapped on the pads and Harmison points his finger to the umpire in a half-shout for lbw - very good ball, hurrying Langer, but it was going over the top

2.5

Harmison to Langer, FOUR, "Catch!" is the shout as Langer flails his arms at this shorter, wider delivery and it's over the slips and down to third man

2.6

Harmison to Langer, no run, down the leg side to finish the over, as has been the trend so far this morning

Australia 17/0   JL Langer 16* (12b 4x4)

4.1

Anderson to Langer, FOUR, short and Langer goes back and pulls it, well in front of square and without much timing...but it races for four. Dreadful start from Anderson.

4.2

Anderson to Langer, no run, better length and straighter, too, but Langer is looking in fine touch here, crisply driving it back to the bowler who athletically stoops to his right to field

4.3

Anderson to Langer, 3 runs, too short again and Langer reads the swing, what little there was, pulling it straighter past mid-on

4.6

Anderson to Langer, no run, good delivery outside the off stump, Langer leaves alone

Australia 31/0   JL Langer 23* (16b 5x4)

6.1

Anderson to Langer, no run, good ball from Anderson luring Langer forward who defends it on the front foot

6.2

Anderson to Langer, no run, excellent delivery again, on off stump and just swinging back into Langer who - head right over the ball - comes forward to defend.

6.3

Anderson to Langer, no run, three out of three for Anderson, this time causing Langer trouble on the back foot

6.4

Anderson to Langer, no run, Langer tries to cut loose, cutting this wider delivery off the back foot but it's straight to gully. Pressure being built; this is better from England here

6.5

Anderson to Langer, no run, quicker, but it's a little too short - Langer rocks back and defends off the back foot without alarm. Still no run, though...

6.6

Anderson to Langer, 3 runs, and the sixth ball is Australia's let-off as Langer pulls it, misjudging the length slightly, through midwicket

Australia 40/0   JL Langer 26* (22b 5x4)

7.1

Hoggard to Langer, no run, well bowled on off stump but solidly defended from Langer, getting his head over the ball and watching it closely onto the bat

7.2

Hoggard to Langer, no run, nearly did Langer for length here who comes forward, shaping to hit him over the top, but defends it on the front foot

7.3

Hoggard to Langer, no run, and he shoulders arms this time outside the off stump. Super shouldering, there

7.4

Hoggard to Langer, no run, Langer gets into a tangle here, misjudging the length and it bobbles out a few metres

7.5

Hoggard to Langer, no run, fabulous ball - the first of the morning, short of a length and Langer fishes at it

7.6

Hoggard to Langer, no run, quicker ball from Hoggard and a touch of swing, too, into the left-hander who is hurried into edging it to the leg side

Australia 40/0   JL Langer 26* (28b 5x4)

9.1

Hoggard to Langer, no run, good ball, well done Hoggard; outside the off stump, Langer swishes his bat over it in a dramatic shouldering of arms. Perfect length

9.2

Hoggard to Langer, FOUR, Langer edges this airborne, never moving his feet, but somehow it evades backward point. This is excellent bowling from Hoggard, and rather impetious batting from Langer

9.3

Hoggard to Langer, no run, oooh terrific bowling! Just outside Langer's off stump, drifting into the left hander and he leaves it alone...not far away from his off bail

9.4

Hoggard to Langer, no run, clubbed to mid-off

9.5

Hoggard to Langer, 3 runs, but he finds the gap this time, crashing it through extra cover and Kevin Pietersen gives chase and does well, pulling it back to Giles who flings in a decent throw

Australia 47/0   JL Langer 33* (33b 6x4)

10.1

Anderson to Langer, no run, nudged to the leg side

10.2

Anderson to Langer, FOUR, crash: Langer cuts hard in front of point, smashing it for four

10.3

Anderson to Langer, no run, quick bouncer there, Langer threatened to hook before ducking underneath it. Oddly for Langer, he hasn't been hit yet - and we've nearly had a whole hour's play

10.4

Anderson to Langer, no run, crashed off the back foot, but to Pietersen in covers

10.5

Anderson to Langer, no run, that's nicely bowled from Anderson - that's the line and length, forcing Langer forward and forcing him to defend his stumps. It's not rocket science.

10.6

Anderson to Langer, no run, pushed off the back foot but he can't find the gap

Australia 51/0   JL Langer 37* (39b 7x4)

11.3

Flintoff to Langer, no run, struck on the pads, hurried onto him and short leg fields

11.4

Flintoff to Langer, 1 run, short ball which Langer doesn't quite get hold of

Australia 57/0   JL Langer 38* (41b 7x4)

12.1

Anderson to Langer, no run, full and straight, clipped off his legs but straight to the fielder

12.2

Anderson to Langer, no run, pushed back to the bowler

12.3

Anderson to Langer, no run, straighter this time, on off stump and Langer defends it on the back foot. Wary, though, wary of the swing - what little there is

12.4

Anderson to Langer, no run, Langer rides the bounce here, pushing it off the back foot into the gully. Really neatly played

12.5

Anderson to Langer, no run, left alone by Langer

12.6

Anderson to Langer, no run, fine ball - and a maiden over - defended on the front foot

Australia 57/0   JL Langer 38* (47b 7x4)

13.3

Flintoff to Langer, 3 runs, good line, but the batsmen gets on his back foot, punches, and that bisects the two gullies. There's some quick running, too

Australia 63/0   JL Langer 41* (48b 7x4)

14.1

Anderson to Langer, FOUR, bosh - great shot from Langer there, a full-blooded cover drive from one which pitches just a touch short and that races away

14.2

Anderson to Langer, no run, good reply from Anderson - straight, and that raps Langer on the thigh pad

14.3

Anderson to Langer, no run, a play and a miss from Langer, looking for a repeat of the pull shot that's worked well for him already today

14.4

Anderson to Langer, 1 wide, bouncer and that climbs and climbs and Langer has got no need to even pull out of that shot, as it's nowhere near him

14.4

Anderson to Langer, no run

14.5

Anderson to Langer, no run, a touch of width this time, only a hint, mind, and that's cut firmly to point where it's picked up without trouble

14.6

Anderson to Langer, no run, decent delivery, straight and on a good length but Langer defends it easily

Australia 68/0   JL Langer 45* (54b 8x4)

15.4

Harmison to Langer, no run, that's down leg again and it's easily pouched by Jones

15.5

Harmison to Langer, no run, a straighter one this time

15.6

Harmison to Langer, no run, straight again and Langer bends over that as he defends it and the ball drops to the man in short on the leg side

Australia 71/0   JL Langer 45* (57b 8x4)

16.2

Flintoff to Langer, no run, Langer thinks about playing that one, but pulls out of the shot at the last moment as he realises the ball is a fuller length than he was expecting, pitching just outside off

16.3

Flintoff to Langer, no run, good areas again from Flintoff, this time the ball is fired down the channel and just to say nips away from the lefthander as it pitches

16.4

Flintoff to Langer, 1 run, decent shot from Langer, who gets nicely on top of that one and strongly pulls away to the leg-side boundary

Australia 73/0   JL Langer 46* (60b 8x4)

17.1

Harmison to Langer, 3 runs, didn't time that cover-drive properly, but found enough space through the covers and there was such power behind that one that the batsmen run three

17.3

Harmison to Langer, no run, straighter, and full, and that's defended on the front foot

17.4

Harmison to Langer, no run, defended again

17.5

Harmison to Langer, no run, ooh, a bottom edge and Langer nearly chops that one on - it flies wide of the off-stump though and bounces down way in front of Jones. That would have been an unfortunate way to get out just short of his half-century

17.6

Harmison to Langer, 1 leg bye, cheers from the crowd who think Langer's brought up his fifty, but he keeps his bat down and smiles, knowing it's a leg-bye, as does the umpire who signals so

Australia 78/0   JL Langer 49* (65b 8x4)

18.1

Flintoff to Langer, 1 run, he's got his fifty this time, with a nice drive and it's a good one, too, full of aggression and all of the shots and coming up from just 66 balls. He raises his bat in muted celebration, a smile on his face - but he'll be aiming for his hundred next, and the way he's batting, there's no reason why he can't get it. It's his first fifty in 11 Test innings

Australia 79/0   JL Langer 50* (66b 8x4)

19.1

Harmison to Langer, 3 runs, more runs for Langer, this time through midwicket, with his ever-productive pull shot. Good stuff

Australia 82/1   JL Langer 53* (67b 8x4)

20.1

Flintoff to Langer, no run, good pace and good bounce - that one spat and the batsman pulled his bat away from the ball, inside the line, at the last minute

20.2

Flintoff to Langer, no run, cracker of a delivery - good aggression from Flintoff, and he spears that one in and it rises sharply, Langer sinking to his knees as he swerves out of the way. The batsman has a wry smile afterwards - this is a good contest between the two

20.3

Flintoff to Langer, (no ball) 2 runs, Flintoff overstepped there and the batsmen run positively as Langer helps the ball to leg

20.3

Flintoff to Langer, no run, the batsman pulled out of chasing that one at the last minute

20.4

Flintoff to Langer, 1 run, Langer plays that one carefully off his hips and it glides to square leg where it's picked up easily

Australia 86/1   JL Langer 56* (72b 8x4)

21.1

Harmison to Langer, no run, Langer gets a headrush and has a waft at that one, but the ball sails under his bottom edge and through to Jones

21.2

Harmison to Langer, 1 run, strays a touch on leg and that's worked off his hips

Australia 87/1   JL Langer 57* (74b 8x4)

22.1

Flintoff to Langer, no run, that's defended into the covers off the front foot

22.2

Flintoff to Langer, no run, that's hit down to gully

22.3

Flintoff to Langer, no run, defended forward and that flies back to the bowler

22.4

Flintoff to Langer, no run, hit off the back foot into cover

22.5

Flintoff to Langer, 1 run, full, but Langer gets bat on it, working it behind square, his bottom hand leaving the bat as he plays the shot

Australia 98/1   JL Langer 58* (79b 8x4)

23.1

Hoggard to Langer, FOUR, jabbed into the gap between slip and gully and that races away over the lightning outfield, with two men chasing in vain - and that's Australia's hundred in what seems like no time at all. Good stuff&

23.2

Hoggard to Langer, FOUR, four more and that's another boundary behind square for Langer - he has ten to his name now

23.3

Hoggard to Langer, no run, ooh, good reply from Hoggard, with one which comes back and dives over off stump - Langer chose to leave that and he judged well

23.4

Hoggard to Langer, no run, left alone again

23.5

Hoggard to Langer, no run, defended on the front foot this time

23.6

Hoggard to Langer, 2 runs, that's on the legs and Langer works that one easily out to square, with the batsmen coming back for two to close out an expensive over from Hoggard

Australia 108/1   JL Langer 68* (85b 10x4)

24.5

Giles to Langer, no run, good bowling from Giles, pushing the batsman on to his back foot and he defends again

24.6

Giles to Langer, no run, a big leave and that's lunch

Australia 109/1   JL Langer 68* (87b 10x4)

25.2

Anderson to Langer, no run, punched into the covers off the back foot

25.3

Anderson to Langer, FOUR, a little more width and crashed square through the covers for four

25.4

Anderson to Langer, no run, tries the same shot but this time fails to time it as well and Pietersen fields

25.5

Anderson to Langer, FOUR, take that! Again up in the zone and Langer launches a ferocious off drive, much straighter, and the ball races to the rope

25.6

Anderson to Langer, no run, Short and Langer attempts to hook but doesn't get hold of it. Nine off the over and Australia in the box seat from the off

Australia 118/1   JL Langer 76* (92b 12x4)

27.1

Anderson to Langer, 1 leg bye, squirted behind square on the leg side for a single

27.3

Anderson to Langer, FOUR, Langer is feasting on this. Wide and smeared to the cover boundary. Anderson shakes his head, as well he might. Expect another complaint about the ball ...

27.4

Anderson to Langer, 1 run, Langer doesn't quite get hold of this but it still produces a run

Australia 131/1   JL Langer 81* (95b 13x4)

28.1

Flintoff to Langer, no run, lovely response from Flintoff as he beats Langer's parry outside off stump. Sadly for England, they need another three or four Flintoffs

28.2

Flintoff to Langer, 1 run, Langer drops and scurries through for a quick single ... for a horrible moment it seemed as if Flintoff in his follow through might flatten Ponting who was rushing to make his ground

28.5

Flintoff to Langer, OUT, at last one goes to hand and again it's Flintoff who makes the breakthrough. Langer slashes at a wide one but the ball is steered straight into the midriff of Pieterson at point. A fine innings from Langer, but one must wonder why he was quite so gung-ho after the break

JL Langer c Pietersen b Flintoff 82 (136m 98b 13x4 0x6) SR: 83.67

Australia 141/2   JL Langer 82 (98b 13x4)
