The Ashes - 1st Test

Australia v England

Australia won by 277 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150  | Overs 151-200

18.3

Flintoff to Hayden, OUT, a good line and length from Flintoff and Hayden is caught fishing on the front foot; he's squared up a treat and a thick edge flies straight to Collingwood at second slip. England have the breakthrough at last and Hayden departs after an erstwhile-supportive innings

ML Hayden c Collingwood b Flintoff 21 (88m 47b 2x4 0x6) SR: 44.68

Australia 79/1   JL Langer 50* (66b 8x4)   A Flintoff 3.3-0-13-1

28.5

Flintoff to Langer, OUT, at last one goes to hand and again it's Flintoff who makes the breakthrough. Langer slashes at a wide one but the ball is steered straight into the midriff of Pieterson at point. A fine innings from Langer, but one must wonder why he was quite so gung-ho after the break

JL Langer c Pietersen b Flintoff 82 (136m 98b 13x4 0x6) SR: 83.67

Australia 141/2   RT Ponting 28* (31b 5x4)   A Flintoff 7.5-0-30-2

47.2

Giles to Martyn, OUT, goddim! A late-cut from Martyn - who has played that shot perfectly all day until now -to a ball which turned just enough -- straight into the hands of Paul Collingwood at first slip. Well, that's a massive breakthrough for England - and unexpected, too, as Martyn was looking in sublime touch.

DR Martyn c Collingwood b Giles 29 (79m 62b 2x4 0x6) SR: 46.77

Australia 198/3   RT Ponting 54* (81b 8x4)   AF Giles 4.2-1-10-1

108.4

Flintoff to Hussey, OUT, bowled through the gate as Hussey attempts a forward defensive and that's a brilliant ball from Flintoff as the timber goes flying. A good tactic from the England captain, too, coming round the wicket - Hussey had been leaving the ball all morning as the ball angled across him and this one made him play... although ultimately he missed. Again it's that man Flintoff who has broken the deadlock and that's three wickets for him

MEK Hussey b Flintoff 86 (257m 187b 8x4 0x6) SR: 45.98

Australia 407/4   RT Ponting 168* (265b 20x4)   A Flintoff 18.4-2-57-3

126.3

Hoggard to Ponting, OUT, Ponting's superb innings ends. He shuffled across his stumps looking to work to leg and was struck in front by Hoggard. A vociferous and pleading appeal was answered - finally - by Steve Bucknor and Ponting reluctantly turned and headed off, but not before he had aimed a massive swipe at the turf on his way back to the pavilion

RT Ponting lbw b Hoggard 196 (464m 319b 24x4 0x6) SR: 61.44

Australia 467/5   MJ Clarke 31* (53b 3x4 1x6)   MJ Hoggard 28.3-4-91-1

126.6

Hoggard to Gilchrist, OUT, strewth ... it's a collapse! Gilchrist played down the wrong line to a ball angled into him - a sniff of swing as well - and another raucous appeal as it hit him on the front foot. It was in line and hitting leg, and Bucknor positively raced into the decision (well, it only took about five seconds)

AC Gilchrist lbw b Hoggard 0 (3m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Australia 467/6   MJ Clarke 31* (53b 3x4 1x6)   MJ Hoggard 29-5-91-2

135.3

Harmison to Warne, OUT, Harmison strikes. Short, down the leg side and Warne chased, got an oh-so-feint glove to it and Bowden's crooked finger did the rest. Harmison will get many, many better wickets but few will so welcome given his tribulations over the last five sessions

SK Warne c †Jones b Harmison 17 (42m 26b 1x4 0x6) SR: 65.38

Australia 500/7   MJ Clarke 46* (78b 4x4 1x6)   SJ Harmison 21.3-2-86-1

141.3

Anderson to Clarke, OUT, Wicket! Anderson deserved that. Clarke looks to drive but it's a bit too far from him and a thick edge flies at regulation height to Strauss at second slip.

MJ Clarke c Strauss b Anderson 56 (153m 94b 5x4 1x6) SR: 59.57

Australia 528/8   B Lee 16* (20b 2x4)   JM Anderson 26.3-6-112-1

149.1

Flintoff to Clark, OUT, gottim. The straight yorker did the job and the timber goes flying... but Clark walks off to a rousing reception from the crowd for his entertaining, and useful, knock

SR Clark b Flintoff 39 (34m 23b 3x4 2x6) SR: 169.56

Australia 578/9   B Lee 27* (43b 3x4)   A Flintoff 27.1-3-92-4
