The Ashes - 5th Test

Australia v England

Australia won by 10 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

9.3

Anderson to Langer, OUT, and Anderson strikes! Not the best of balls, on the leg-side, and Langer chases after the ball and it comes off his glove, Read snapping up the catch and appealing/celebrating immediately

JL Langer c †Read b Anderson 26 (41m 27b 4x4 0x6) SR: 96.29

Australia 34/1   ML Hayden 4* (32b)   JM Anderson 4.3-3-3-1

25.3

Harmison to Hayden, OUT, short and wide, inexplicably Hayden slashes at it and the ball flies off the top edge straight to Collingwood at second slip. Harmison jumps in delight, Hayden stands bemused with his own shot selection for a short time before heading off

ML Hayden c Collingwood b Harmison 33 (113m 77b 5x4 0x6) SR: 42.85

Australia 100/2   RT Ponting 35* (51b 4x4)   SJ Harmison 6.3-1-24-1

32.3

Panesar to Ponting, OUT, now that's a big shout and Panesar thinks the man is gone after Anderson's direct hit from mid-on, ten yards away. A silly single to risk and Bowden nodded immediately there, with replays confirming that Ponting's about a foot short. Huge roars from the crowd as the verdict flashes on the screen. What a wicket for England - Ponting has gone

RT Ponting run out 45 (96m 72b 6x4 0x6) SR: 62.50

Australia 118/3   MEK Hussey 4* (21b)   MS Panesar 5.3-0-13-0

43.1

Harmison to Clarke, OUT, big appeal and gone! Harmison got some extra lift there and Clarke went fishing on his back foot, attempting a cut

MJ Clarke c †Read b Harmison 11 (39m 24b 1x4 0x6) SR: 45.83

Australia 155/4   MEK Hussey 29* (61b 2x4 1x6)   SJ Harmison 10.1-3-27-2

56.2

Anderson to Hussey, OUT, slanted across the left hander, Hussey plays for the swing but there is none, a thin edge just carries to a diving Chris Read who makes a tough catch look oh-so-easy. An almost perfect start for England.

MEK Hussey c †Read b Anderson 37 (120m 100b 3x4 1x6) SR: 37.00

Australia 190/5   A Symonds 24* (40b 3x4)   JM Anderson 17.2-7-55-2

73.1

Panesar to Symonds, OUT, done him! Terrible shot from Symonds, looking to swing away on the on-side but plays all round it and he's cleaned up just short of what would have been a well-deserved half-century. He was playing so well, working the singles around, but a head rush, a swoosh, and he's gone

A Symonds b Panesar 48 (138m 95b 6x4 0x6) SR: 50.52

Australia 260/6   AC Gilchrist 42* (51b 4x4)   MS Panesar 14.1-0-53-1

80.3

Anderson to Gilchrist, OUT, gone! Fishing at a very wide one and it appears an edge flies up to Read - or was the noise bat into the ground? There's a long time for the crooked finger to spell doom. Gilchrist can't believe it and the crowd can't either - the boos ring out as the dismissal is replayed on the giant screens around the SCG and Gilchrist walks off keeping his emotions to himself

AC Gilchrist c †Read b Anderson 62 (118m 72b 8x4 0x6) SR: 86.11

Australia 318/7   SK Warne 38* (23b 5x4 2x6)   JM Anderson 20.3-8-70-3

83.3

Flintoff to Lee, OUT, same line as the previous delivery, just short of a length and Brett Lee fends at the ball and nicks it. A routine catch for Chris Read, his fifth of the innings

B Lee c †Read b Flintoff 5 (14m 10b 1x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Australia 325/8   SK Warne 40* (31b 5x4 2x6)   A Flintoff 13.3-2-43-1

95.3

Mahmood to Clark, OUT, gone this time … Clark ballooning that one in the air, trying to hook, and Pietersen runs in for an easy catch, which he takes coolly. Clark goes for 35, his second-highest Test score.

SR Clark c Pietersen b Mahmood 35 (55m 41b 1x4 0x6) SR: 85.36

Australia 393/9   SK Warne 71* (62b 9x4 2x6)   SI Mahmood 10.3-1-59-1

96.3

Panesar to Warne, OUT, ah, the fairytale ends. Warne comes way out of his crease and the wristy Read does the rest, whipping off the bails with ease. That's six dismissals again for Read, as at Melbourne. The SCG rises as one for Warne who jogs off waving his bat. Relief is writ large in the form of a huge smile for McGrath, pleased in a small way that it wasn't him to fall at the last to leave Warne stranded

SK Warne st †Read b Panesar 71 (114m 65b 9x4 2x6) SR: 109.23

Australia 393/10   GD McGrath 0* (3b)   MS Panesar 19.3-0-90-2
