Chris Gayle had better things to do than watch the Ashes
The Ashes is one of Test cricket's most celebrated series, a biennial clash of fierce rivalry between England and Australia which stretches back to 1882. The series is named after a mock-obituary that was published in British newspaper The Sporting Times when Australia beat England for the first time on English soil. It said English cricket had died, and "the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia".
The media dubbed England's following tour to Australia (1882-83) as "the quest to regain The Ashes" and during the series a small terracotta urn - that has since become the series' icon - was presented to the England captain by a group of Melbourne women. England won the 2009 Ashes on home soil and travel to Australia this winter to defend it. Ashes history
