India tour of Australia, 2007/08 / Commentary

Border-Gavaskar Trophy - 1st Test

Australia v India

Australia won by 337 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

10.30am Huge roars as Jaques and Hayden run out. To extend the football (OK, soccer since we're in 'Stralia) analogy... the MCG is like a cauldron out there. Soccer commentators always say that about imposing stadia. Ready, ready - here comes Zaheer Khan from the Members' End.

10.25am Just had a flashback a few years with a headline "Gough wins TV dancing crown" but enough about that because here come the teams, striding out in two separate lines ahead of the anthems. They look like they're walking out for a Champions League final... minus the t-shirts and shorts and goalposts, of course.

Sourav Ganguly gets a silver plaque for his 100th Test.

10.15am "Ponting wins the toss and whacks" suggests a nameless colleague... from India. He has a point, though, Phil Jaques has slotted into the opener's spot pretty well, alongside Matthew Hayden. And that's just for starters.

Sid's in the house, and denies oversleeping. There'll be no time for sleeping soon as we're getting ready to roll. Get some kettle action while you can.

10.00am Ricky Ponting has won the toss."We're going to have a bat first today, mate," he said. "The wicket has improved overnight. I still expect it to be pretty hard work this morning. The pitch is a bit tacky on top and a few cracks already developing there. A good toss to win."

Brad Hogg is in and Shaun Tait misses out, so Mitchell Johnson retains the third seamer's spot. "The other guys in the side have done a terrific job. We felt that balance at the moment is right." Hogg, then, is the only change from the team that beat Sri Lanka recently.

Anil Kumble would have loved to have won the toss but nevertheless has confidence in his bowling attack, which includes two spinners - himself and Harbhajan, with Ishant left out. "We have chosen the four best bowlers to do the job," he says. "As a pair they have done well against the Aussies and they give us the chance to take 20 wickets."

He has confirmed that Rahul Dravid will open (eventually) but of course first Australia have to bat. Stay with us.

9.45am Good morning everyone (or indeed Merry Christmas if you're joining us in the evening from the UK or anywhere west of there) and welcome along to coverage of the first day of the first Test between Australia and India. It's Boxing Day so the cricket must be at the MCG, which is hosting its 100th Test and where Australia are aiming to extend their run of Test wins here to nine in a row. Crikey.

I'm Jenny Thompson, enjoying my first Australian Christmas, and can't wait for the start. Also up for it are my Australian colleagues Peter English and Brydon Coverdale, while from our India office we welcome Siddartha Vaidanathyan (not a name you want to spell on the best of days nevermind the morning after Christmas) and my co-commentator Anand Vasu, who will be bringing you the second session.

No toss or team news yet, but I can tell you the weather is glorious - the sky is blue, blue and blue. Clumps of fans have been filtering in for a good hour and a half already - it's not quite last year's Ashes frenzy, but 70,000 are expected nevertheless. Siddartha will be expected soon: he was so excited he couldn't sleep... but now I think he's overslept. That may be a gross libel, I shall confirm that soon enough.

Teams-wise, Australia are expected to call in Brad Hogg, their premier spinner in the absence of Stuart MacGill, who's had hand surgery. India are also expected to opt for three seamers and a spinner, though they may go for two and two if Harbhajan Singh is preferred to the pace of Ishant Sharma.

The pitch is expected to be flat, but has more moisture in it than usual owing to the pre-Christmas downpours so bowling first could be an option to take advantage of any seaming conditions. Then again the sky is cloudless, so... a tricky decision... harder than, say, an extra mince pie or extra pud and in this case you can't have both.

Australia have played just the two Tests since the Ashes this time last year when Warne, McGrath and Langer retired. Much has been made of filling those gaps but in the two matches, against Sri Lanka, they looked pretty much as dominant as ever. India have won their last two series 1-0, against England and Pakistan.

0.1

Khan to Jaques, no run, great start. We'll take that. Zaheer troubles the left hander first up with one which is bowled seam up, pitches outside, invites a nervous push and seams away late

So it will be Brett Lee to open up for Australia.

0.1

Khan to Jaques, no run, pitches outside off and rises up, more of a skid than anything, through to Gilchrist who affects a long barrier type of shape

0.2

Khan to Jaques, no run, shorter and wider, Jaques cuts hard to cover point but it's taken well

A short leg in, and plenty of slips of course

0.3

Khan to Jaques, no run, nibbles away and rises off the pitch, too, Jaques pulls his bat away at the last second

0.4

Khan to Jaques, 1 no ball, this one comes in now, Jaques leaves it, and that's a no ball for the overstep

No free hit in this cricket, mind

0.4

Khan to Jaques, no run, nipped back in again, tighter line, and kept lower (relatively, it's not a low track), Jaques jumps into the line and defends behind

0.5

Khan to Jaques, no run, done again, another pensive push forward with a step on to the front foot, this one tracking away off the seam this time

0.6

Khan to Jaques, no run, left this time

Great opening over, asking plenty of questions. Beautiful day. Crowd looks pretty decent, too. Here's RP Singh to test out Hayden.

End of over 1 (1 run) Australia 1/0
PA Jaques    0* (7b)      Z Khan    1-0-1-0
ML Hayden    0* (0b)

1.1

Singh to Hayden, no run, left alone outside off

Three slips and a gully

1.2

Singh to Hayden, no run, shouldered arms to that one, which carried through pretty tidily

1.3

Singh to Hayden, no run, down the channel again, wide enough - just - to leave, again

The pitch may not be a low one, but you can tell there's a touch of moisture in it as the ball is not quite zipping

1.4

Singh to Hayden, no run, zinged away and away from the left hander, late, after hitting the seam

1.5

Singh to Hayden, no run, on middle and leg, Hayden plays down late, just about jabbing bat down

That one excited the crowd, I tell you

"Sachin, Sachin, Sachin, Sachin" reads an informative banner in the crowd

1.6

Singh to Hayden, no run, moved away off the seam again, swinging a touch as well

End of over 2 (maiden) Australia 1/0
ML Hayden    0* (6b)      RP Singh    1-1-0-0
PA Jaques    0* (7b)      Z Khan    1-0-1-0

2.1

Khan to Jaques, no run, oh, another question asked by Zaheer, jinking away outside off

2.2

Khan to Jaques, no run, nerve-inducing wobble back in to the left hander, a touch late

My, this is a good start for Zaheer

2.3

Khan to Jaques, no run, a deliberate step and defensive press

2.4

Khan to Jaques, no run, a play and a miss, Zaheer has really got into Jaques's mind right now - the batsman prodded a nothing shot away from his body with little foot movement

2.5

Khan to Jaques, no run, plays inside the line of the ball this time, Zaheer shooting it just past the off stick

Have we got an early mini-contest. Four slips and a gully now

2.6

Khan to Jaques, no run, loud shout for lbw that's roundly booed when it's correctly turned down, the ball was going on to miss leg, and a touch high too

Another super over from Zaheer

End of over 3 (maiden) Australia 1/0
PA Jaques    0* (13b)      Z Khan    2-1-1-0
ML Hayden    0* (6b)      RP Singh    1-1-0-0

3.1

Singh to Hayden, no run, rock-solid forward defence towards the cover

3.2

Singh to Hayden, no run, swung away from the left hander, wide enough to leave

Tight enough bowling from Singh, but it's Zaheer who's posed the most problems in these very very early stages. Let's see how this over shapes up

3.3

Singh to Hayden, no run, good line and length again, a touch of swing, defended straight forward this time

3.4

Singh to Hayden, no run, left alone outside off, the ball zipping away from him, leavably (you know what I mean) wide

3.5

Singh to Hayden, no run, zigzagging zing starting to move away, pitching, and moving way, away - Dhoni side stepping like a Space Invader to pouch

3.6

Singh to Hayden, 1 run, first run off the bat, Hayden tip-and-running into the leg side... stealing the strike to boot

Thus Hayden gets to face his first delivery from Zaheer who won't have to adjust his line because Hayden is also a left hander

End of over 4 (1 run) Australia 2/0
ML Hayden    1* (12b)      RP Singh    2-1-1-0
PA Jaques    0* (13b)      Z Khan    2-1-1-0

4.1

Khan to Hayden, no run, left alone outside off - very easily - and not "orf" as I just mistyped, I may be a Pom but I'm not posh

4.2

Khan to Hayden, no run, massive shout for lbw, Hayden trapped forward but the ball was going down leg, and the swing took it over too

Good decision first up

4.3

Khan to Hayden, 1 run, played forward to bring Jaques back on strike

4.4

Khan to Jaques, no run, left alone down the channel

Hayden, by the way, averages 67.70 at this ground

4.5

Khan to Jaques, 2 runs, off the mark at last wih a leading edge forward of point and they come back for two, Jaques setting off for a third, but sent back

4.6

Khan to Jaques, no run, decent delivery to end the over, pitching on off and rising a touch through

End of over 5 (3 runs) Australia 5/0
PA Jaques    2* (16b)      Z Khan    3-1-4-0
ML Hayden    2* (15b)      RP Singh    2-1-1-0

5.1

Singh to Hayden, FOUR, thick edge, Hayden finds the gap luckily enough and that races

5.2

Singh to Hayden, 3 runs, a more convincing shot this time, pressing forward to drive through mid-off

5.3

Singh to Jaques, no run, left alone outside off

5.4

Singh to Jaques, no run, left alone outside off

5.5

Singh to Jaques, no run, defended on the back foot this time

5.6

Singh to Jaques, 1 run, pushed off the legs to short midwicket, and they run through for a quick strike-stealing single

End of over 6 (8 runs) Australia 13/0
PA Jaques    3* (20b)      RP Singh    3-1-9-0
ML Hayden    9* (17b 1x4)      Z Khan    3-1-4-0

6.1

Khan to Jaques, no run, big shout again, nipping back in off the seam, but probably just a tad high

6.2

Khan to Jaques, no run, left alone outside off

6.3

Khan to Jaques, no run, left alone this time, nipped back from outside off

6.4

Khan to Jaques, no run, massive shout - once again - pitched outside off, nipped back high and possibly missing leg too

6.5

Khan to Jaques, no run, defended on the back foot this time

6.6

Khan to Jaques, FOUR, outside off, cut away off the back foot through point

End of over 7 (4 runs) Australia 17/0
PA Jaques    7* (26b 1x4)      Z Khan    4-1-8-0
ML Hayden    9* (17b 1x4)      RP Singh    3-1-9-0

7.1

Singh to Hayden, FOUR, oh, gets away with that one, a thick edge skews through the recently vacated third slip and on its merry way

7.2

Singh to Hayden, no run, defended on the front foot

7.3

Singh to Hayden, no run, down leg, not challenging the batsman, who follows it round

7.4

Singh to Hayden, 1 run, down leg, pushed to short midwicket where Jaffer does some excellent fielding - a jaffa of a piece of fielding if you like. Neither do I. We'll move on

7.5

Singh to Jaques, no run, wide outside off, kept a touch low but that didn't stop the batsman flashing away from it

7.6

Singh to Jaques, no run, crouches very late, sort-of ducking a sort-of bouncer

End of over 8 (5 runs) Australia 22/0
PA Jaques    7* (28b 1x4)      RP Singh    4-1-14-0
ML Hayden    14* (21b 2x4)      Z Khan    4-1-8-0

8.1

Khan to Hayden, 3 runs, a scoopy kind of cover drive

8.2

Khan to Jaques, no run, testing zip, aimed from a lowish trajectory (not quite Malinga, though), zooming back in, and defended

8.3

Khan to Jaques, no run, pushed through the off side, left alone

8.4

Khan to Jaques, no run, another quality delivery, nipping back in, climbing and rapping him high on the thigh

8.5

Khan to Jaques, no run, pressed forward back towards the bowler

8.6

Khan to Jaques, 2 runs, too short, and on leg, but the pull shot isn't timed

End of over 9 (5 runs) Australia 27/0
PA Jaques    9* (33b 1x4)      Z Khan    5-1-13-0
ML Hayden    17* (22b 2x4)      RP Singh    4-1-14-0

9.1

Singh to Hayden, no run, left alone outside off

9.2

Singh to Hayden, 1 run, pushed off the front foot to short midwicket

9.3

Singh to Jaques, no run, off the toes again to short midwicket

9.4

Singh to Jaques, FOUR, wide outside off, crouches into a cut which travels behind point - tremendous

9.5

Singh to Jaques, FOUR, in the air again, gets away with a bread-doorstop thick edge over the vacant fourth slip area

9.6

Singh to Jaques, no run, played down into the gully this time

End of over 10 (9 runs) Australia 36/0
PA Jaques    17* (37b 3x4)      RP Singh    5-1-23-0

Singh to Jaques, 2 runs, driven through the covers

11.4

Singh to Jaques, 1 leg bye, down leg, tucked away to fine

Singh to Hayden, FOUR, crunched, much like my barbecue Shape, through the covers. Yum

The second gully goes out on the drive

11.6

Singh to Hayden, 1 run, played well off the legs

End of over 12 (8 runs) Australia 48/0
ML Hayden    26* (30b 3x4)      RP Singh    6-1-30-0

12.6

Khan to Hayden, 1 no ball, nipped back in from outside off, and an overstep, too

12.6

Australia just beginning to gain the momentum now. Spin into the attack now, in the shape of Harbhajan Singh.

ML Hayden    27* (35b 3x4)      Z Khan    7-1-25-0

13.1

Harbhajan Singh to Jaques, no run, left outside off this time

One slip in and a short leg, note you

13.4

Harbhajan Singh to Jaques, no run, followed the ball on to the back foot and on to his defensive bat, plumb-straight down

13.5

Harbhajan Singh to Jaques, no run, plenty of loop this time, tidy defensive press

13.6

Harbhajan Singh to Jaques, no run, on middle and leg, shaped to turn it into the leg side

Another change, it's Sourav Ganguly now, with his medium pacers. Third slip comes out, leaving two and a gully. Orthodox field

Such is his strength that it nearly reaches the rope even though it wasn't timed

End of over 17 (6 runs) Australia 69/0
ML Hayden    31* (44b 3x4)      SC Ganguly    2-1-6-0
PA Jaques    34* (60b 5x4)      Harbhajan Singh    2-1-7-0

17.1

Harbhajan Singh to Hayden, no run, a horrible, horrible... but comical shot... Hayden chasing a wide one and not letting it go, playing away from his body, and chopping down a bottom edge

18.1

Ganguly to Hayden, FOUR, outside off, pulled straight with a touch of rock on to his back foot

18.6

Ganguly to Jaques, (no ball) 1 run, on off, played off the front foot just in front of square

Huge boos greet the call of no-ball owing to the overstep. Big Indian support in here today

Harbhajan Singh to Hayden, 3 runs, way outside off, Hayden reaches out for one of his back-foot cuts, this time he connects

Twenty overs gone, then, and Australia have scrambled back on top following some early trouble. A change now, RP Singh back into the attack. He bowled well first up, and wasn't given the best of fields, Kumble guilty of some horse-stable-door-bolting field settings

End of over 20 (8 runs) Australia 89/0
ML Hayden    42* (53b 4x4)      Harbhajan Singh    4-1-18-0

PA Jaques    49* (79b 6x4)      RP Singh    8-1-39-0

And that's Jaques's fifty, not the most classic shots early doors but he's settled in since then and his half-century is good reward

25.2

Harbhajan Singh to Jaques, 2 runs, driven wide of mid on

25.3

Harbhajan Singh to Jaques, 1 run, pushed to midwicket for an easy single

Harbhajan wants the deep midwicket to come up to midwicket, but Kumble sends him back out there. A single there every time, then

25.4

Harbhajan Singh to Hayden, 1 run, and another one to midwicket. Harbhajan will be seething

25.5

Harbhajan Singh to Jaques, no run, played on the back foot

It's closing in on lunch now, and Hayden will be keen to head there with a half-century under his belt

Kumble to Hayden, no run, up there on off, Kumble keeping him quiet

26.6

Kumble to Hayden, no run, on leg, thinks about turning it to midwicket but checks the shot at the last second

And that's lunch on what has been an excellent opening partnership/morning for Australia. Hayden, who will have to wait till just after lunch to go for his half-century, rushes up to Jaques, who has his, to congratulate him for his persistence. Australia will be well pleased with their efforts after battling early - against the threatening Zaheer in particular - and opening up in the latter stages. Thanks for joining me this session, when we come back it will be Anand Vasu in the hot seat, so please give him a warm welcome.

Thanks Jenny. Hello and welcome to coverage of the second session of play. I'm Anand Vasu and will be calling the game for you over the next couple of hours, through to the tea break.

The players are back on the field: Hayden and Jaques to continue the good work, and India's bowlers to try and stop them.

27.1

Harbhajan Singh to Jaques, no run, well flighted and on the off stump, a bit of turn as Harbhajan bowls from over the stumps, played at and missed, through to the keeper

27.2

Harbhajan Singh to Jaques, 1 run, Jaques unveils the sweep, uncannily like how Justin Langer used to, efficiently hit away to the leg side

27.3

Harbhajan Singh to Hayden, no run, tossed up a bit more and outside the off, Hayden gets his foot well down the pitch and drives powerfully to cover

27.4

Harbhajan Singh to Hayden, no run, short of a length and outside the off, Hayden comes across dramatically and leaves the ball alone

27.5

Harbhajan Singh to Hayden, 2 runs, Here we go. Full and on the pads, Hayden plays a muscular sweep quite fine and a couple of runs means it's a 28th Test half-century for Hayden

27.6

Harbhajan Singh to Hayden, FOUR, another one that's a bit straight, this time Hayden doesn't bother with hitting the sweep fine. Instead he bisects the two fielders in the deep and powers this one to the fence at fine-leg

28.1

Khan to Jaques, no run, full and outside the off stump, no swing at all here for Zaheer but the pace is decent, driven strongly back past the bowler to the off side

28.2

Khan to Jaques, no run, pushed through a bit fuller and just outside the off, this time Jaques has not interest in playing a shot, decides early and leaves the ball alone to the keeper

28.3

Khan to Jaques, 1 run, Jaques is clever this time. He drops the ball down to the off side with soft hands and an angled bat and takes the single. Even the sprightly Yuvraj, who runs in from cover and fields, can't stop that single

28.4

Khan to Hayden, no run, A most pleasing sight for any bowler - Hayden leaves the ball alone. That's a good line and length, just short of a driving length and in that area outside the off, through to the keeper, good bounce and carry

28.5

Khan to Hayden, no run, once again Hayden is in gentle mood and leaves the ball alone to the keeper

28.6

Khan to Hayden, no run, And there's a hat-trick! Oh, don't get excited, it's just three balls in a row that Hayden has left alone to the keeper. Given how the first session went for the Indians they'll take that at the moment

End of over 29 (1 run) Australia 119/0

29.1

Harbhajan Singh to Jaques, no run, fullish and outside the off, Jaques defends with a straight bat and thinks about taking a single but decides against it

29.2

Harbhajan Singh to Jaques, no run, slightly shorter and outside the off, a bit of turn as well, the angle takes the ball away from the batsman, left alone to the keeper

29.3

Harbhajan Singh to Jaques, 1 run, a little straight and this time Jaques is in business, quickly getting down on one knee and sweeping

29.4

Harbhajan Singh to Hayden, no run, fuller and on the pads, dabbed away to the on side but no chance of a single

29.5

Harbhajan Singh to Hayden, no run, floated in a bit fuller and on the off, Hayden comes forward and defends

29.6

Harbhajan Singh to Hayden, 2 runs, fuller and on the pads, this time the ball is just nudged away and the runs come easily enough as the fielder at fine-leg cleans up

End of over 30 (3 runs) Australia 122/0
ML Hayden    57* (87b 5x4)      Harbhajan Singh    9-1-39-0
PA Jaques    60* (96b 7x4)      Z Khan    8-1-26-0

30.1

Khan to Jaques, no run, short of a good length and on the off stump, coming in with the arm as Zaheer bowls from over the stumps, defended back down the pitch with a straight bat. Zaheer getting some respect from the batsmen here.

30.2

Khan to Jaques, no run, just short of a good length and on the off stump, defended to the off side with an angled bat

30.3

Khan to Jaques, FOUR, short, wide and with it disappears the respect the batsman hinted at giving Zaheer. Jaques gets well on top of this one, rolls the wrists and keeps the ball down as he square-cuts!

30.4

Khan to Jaques, no run, fuller this time, good correction from Zaheer, defended back down the pitch with the bat held close to the pad

30.5

Khan to Jaques, 1 run, just short of a good length once more and on the stumps, played down to the off side and the two batsmen sprint off for a single without so much as a call ... Yuvraj fields but the single is easily taken

30.6

Khan to Hayden, 2 runs, short ball banged in outside the off, Hayden pulls uppishly to the on side and there's a half-hearted shout of "catch it!" but it's not near a fielder ... and another over with 7 runs off it

Anil Kumble comes into the attack

31.1

Kumble to Jaques, 1 run, fullish and outside the off, that is quite flat and fast, Jaques is hurried and defends, off a thick outside edge past slips

31.2

Kumble to Hayden, no run, good-length ball outside the off stump, played back down the pitch with some care

31.3

Kumble to Hayden, no run, fuller still and a touch straighter, Hayden thinks about playing this across the line but adjusts in the last minute and defends

31.4

Kumble to Hayden, 2 runs, fuller and on the pads, this time Hayden gets across and dabs the ball through the on-side, down to fine-leg for runs

31.5

Kumble to Hayden, no run, fired in very full and quicker, outside the off stump, driven forcefully but not past the infield

31.6

Kumble to Hayden, 1 run, a touch short and a bit too straight, Hayden can go back and paddle this one down to fine-leg for a single

End of over 32 (4 runs) Australia 133/0

PA Jaques    66* (102b 8x4)      Z Khan    9-1-33-0

32.1

Khan to Hayden, 1 run, full and just outside the off, Zaheer pushing the ball through a bit, driven across the line to mid-on, RP Singh is napping a bit and the single is pinched

32.2

Khan to Jaques, no run, full and on the off stump, Zaheer generating enough pace to keep the batsmen honest when he lands the ball on a good line and length, defended to the off side

32.3

Khan to Jaques, no run, a bit too full there and Jaques looks to go across his stumps and work the ball to the leg side, played down to mid-on

32.4

Khan to Jaques, no run, short of a good length, pitching just outside the off, coming in with the angle, played at and missed, rapped on the pad, loud shout from Zaheer, no support from the fielders, that's going over the top, easily turned down

32.5

Khan to Jaques, no run, short of a length and a bit of width outside the off, Jaques throws the bat at this one and misses. Lucky not to edge this one

32.6

Khan to Jaques, no run, just short of a length and on the off, cramping Jaques a bit for room, he defends to the off side with an angled bat

End of over 33 (1 run) Australia 134/0

33.1

Kumble to Hayden, no run, full and outside the off, Hayden comes forward and pokes towards point with an angled bat

33.2

Kumble to Hayden, no run, just short of a length this time and on the pads, defended to the leg side

33.3

Kumble to Hayden, 1 run, and here's the sweep, it's never too far away with Hayden, in full control, spin and bounce smothered, down to short fine-leg

33.4

Kumble to Jaques, OUT, Googly! India's captain sells Phil Jaques a dummy and finally there's a breakthrough. Kumble tosses up the googly, it's pitched outside the off and floats invitingly towards Jaques who is advancing down the pitch. Jaques fails to pick the wrong 'un and hangs his bat well inside the line of the ball. Mahendra Singh Dhoni takes the bails off and that is the end of Jaques

PA Jaques st †Dhoni b Kumble 66 (142m 108b 8x4 0x6) SR: 61.11

Ricky Ponting walks out to bat on the back of a solid opening partnership

33.5

Kumble to Ponting, no run, down the leg side first up, not the best ball first-up to Ponting, who can be tentative early in his innings, especially against spin

33.6

Kumble to Ponting, no run, pushed through flatter and on the stumps, Ponting goes back in his crease and defends back down the pitch

HR Gopalakrishna, our statistician, weighs in: "The three figure stand for the first wicket between PA Jaques and ML Hayden provide the second instance of a first wicket three figure partnership by Australian batsman against India at Melbourne. The first occasion was the 191 runs stand between WM Lawry and RB Simpson in Dec 1967 - 40 years ago"

34.1

Khan to Hayden, no run, short of a good length and outside the off, left well alone

34.2

Khan to Hayden, 2 runs, this time it is fuller and Hayden can come forward and work the ball through cover

HRG tells us Anil Kumble, with the stumping dismissal of Phil Jaques, has the Indian record for most dismissals stumped - now 21

34.3

Khan to Hayden, 2 runs, fullish and outside the off, punched through cover

34.4

Khan to Hayden, no run, a bit of inswing on this occasion, just a hint, outside the off though, left well alone

34.5

Khan to Hayden, FOUR, short of a length, a bit of width outside the off, Hayden hits that really hard and even if it's a bit uppish Anil Kumble at gully has no chance of getting to it. Kumble manages a finger but that just got to him too quickly.

34.6

Khan to Hayden, 1 run, short ball banged in for variation, Hayden goes back and works this through the leg side and yet another expensive over comes to an end

35.3

Kumble to Ponting, 2 runs, very full and on the stumps, flicked away through the on side, the fielder dives but is late and Ponting gets off the mark

35.5

Kumble to Hayden, no run, short of a length, just outside the off, a bit of extra bounce, played down to cover with a horizontal bat

36.4

Khan to Hayden, no run, fullish and on the off stump, Hayden gets bat and pad close together and drives with power and solidity towards cover

36.5

Khan to Hayden, FOUR, overpitched, on the middle and leg and Hayden stands tall and picks that off, powering the ball past the fielder at mid-on ... no chance for the fielder. Perhaps Zaheer is tiring here

38.2

Khan to Hayden, 1 run, short one, doesn't rally get up, played down to the on side. Hayden running a bit gingerly here. Has he tweaked something?

38.3

Khan to Ponting, no run, full and on the off, driven sweetly but straight to the fielder at mid-off

38.4

Khan to Ponting, no run, just short of a good length and on the off, played back down the pitch to the off side

38.5

Khan to Ponting, OUT, Beauty! That is a cracker from Zaheer Khan. This is really good ball from Zaheer and it cleans up Ponting. Zaheer comes round the stumps, changing the angle, and gets this ball to hold its line just a fraction. It's pitched on a good length and this means Ponting is neither fully committed to the front foot nor going back. The ball slips past the outside edge and pegs back the off stump. That is a quality ball to get rid of a massively dangerous batsman.
