Border-Gavaskar Trophy - 2nd Test

Australia v India

Australia won by 122 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

10.30am The India team strides out past the India flag now, and here come Matthew Hayden and Phil Jaques who, last match, high-fived the Aussie flag and I wonder if they will do again now. The members' stand rise to greet them, and they do indeed punch the flag. They're up for it, both running out swinging their arms, stretching their legs and playing aggressive air drives as they go. Let's go.

10.25am Five minutes to the start now, everyone. How India will be rueing Zaheer's injury, he's their premier pace bowler after all. The umpires are coming out now, India won't be far behind.

10.15am "Ladies and gentlemen, if you could please be upstanding for the national anthem," says the MC for the day. Not recommended for those following stealthily in offices right now.

The Indian team barely lip-synch to the words, Ishant standing taller than any of them. He's like the Stuart Broad of India - a young, slim beanpole of a pace bowler... and still growing. He's put on about a foot in the 18 months since I saw him; OK, a few inches.

Australia win the battle of the anthems, with their players the keenest. The enthusiam prize is a tie between Adam Gilchrist and... Mike Hussey of course. Ponting, you feel, is too focussed on the match to be hearty and he strides off resolutely as soon as it's done.

10.00am Ricky Ponting has won the toss. "We're going to bat today, mate," he says, a rerun of the MCG. "The wicket looks pretty good, a bit of moisture this morning. We played well in Melbourne but that's all behind us now. We created momentum and hope to do the same. It was as good Test cricket as we've played in a long time."

Anil Kumble is quietly, calmly confident. "There'll be early juice in the wickets, I'm looking forward to a couple of early wickets."

Zaheer hasn't passed his fitness test so Ishant Sharma comes in. "Ishant is a young talent, he's done well in a few matches he's played." He is indeed a good talent, tall and threatening, I saw him play for India Under-19s against England at Cardiff two summers ago and he was the stand-out bowler there.

India, then, have retained two spinners and their opening combination and they shape up like this: 1 Wasim Jaffer, 2 Rahul Dravid, 3 VVS Laxman, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 Sourav Ganguly, 6 Yuvraj Singh, 7 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), 8 Anil Kumble (capt), 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 RP Singh.

9.50am Sid V reports that Zaheer underwent a fitness test right now and he bowled for about 10-15 minutes. It could decide whether he plays or not. Yuvraj is having a long knocking session with the bat (can't you get them pre-knocked in these days?...groan)

"It's a sunny day," notes Sid. "Warm and sweaty. And Kumble is walking in with a blazer...uff." Plenty of people coming into the ground, too.

9.30am A hearty happy new year to everyone and welcome along to coverage from the second Test at the SCG, where Australia, of course, are unchanged: they named their team last year they were that confident. India are waiting on Zaheer Khan's heel problem before they announce their side this morning.

Australia, then, lest there be any doubt look like this: 1 Phil Jaques, 2 Matthew Hayden, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Andrew Symonds, 7 Adam Gilchrist (wk), 8 Brad Hogg, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Mitchell Johnson, 11 Stuart Clark.

India news when we get it.

The pitch is looking pretty green, while the SCG usually favours the faster bowlers with pace and swing, though there's always some incentive for the spinners, so Brad Hogg will be encouraged.

Australia's coach Tim Nielsen this morning told Nine that he would expect them to bat should they get the choice. "It's nice to get runs if you can." It is.

Adam Gilchrist, meanwhile, expects India to come right back into the series after being hammered at the MCG. "They'll definitely fight back. They've got a lot of experience and they know when to draw on that when it's needed, so that's what we'll expect."

I dreamt last night that someone took nine wickets in an innings... then again the actor Bill Murray was also playing and he got someone out so I'm hardly Nostradamus. I am, though, Jenny Thompson and I will be bringing you all the action and no more dreams. I will be joined at the innings break by the lovely George Binoy, or perhaps earlier if my laptop melts as it has been threatening to do recently in the Adelaide heatwave (South Australia also melted in the heat last night against New South Wales in the Big Bash; massive crowd, though)

Hopefully we're in for a scorcher (see what I did there) in Sydney, which usually holds the last Test in a series, as Siddhartha Vaidanathyan pointed out in his splendid preview. The weather's certainly set fair - which is a bit of a relief, really, as Sydney's been hit by a fair few showers of late. More news soon but in the meantime grab yourself a coffee/get some work out of the way/have a look elsewhere on the site. There's plenty going on.

I'm assuming, of course, you're all at work in Australia or similar time zone. Double points if you're awake in India around 4am. We're delighted to have you whichever country you're tuning in from around the globe.

0.1

Singh to Jaques, no run, a little movement away from RP Singh, but a touch wide first up, allowing Jaques to leave easily

0.2

Singh to Jaques, no run, better delivery, making him play, with a firm defensive push towards mid-on

0.3

Singh to Jaques, no run, pushed at a good delivery, a full one swinging away from off stump, draws him into the shot but just doesn't quite get the edge

0.4

Singh to Jaques, no run, right up there on off, turns the bat towards square leg and there's a loud call of "No"

0.5

Singh to Jaques, no run, pitched on a good length and rose through to the keeper

0.6

Singh to Jaques, no run, right up there on middle, played back down well

The end, then, of a tidy first over asking a few questions of Jaques already

End of over 1 (maiden) Australia 0/0

ML Hayden    0* (0b)

So on comes Ishant for his ball in a Test against Australia. No pressure, then... He's got a lovely smooth action and generates good lift from his height. Three slips and a gully waiting.

1.1

Sharma to Hayden, no run, good start, Hayden crunching down an inside edge at the last second, straight and pushing him onto the back foot

Good start

1.2

Sharma to Hayden, no run, pushed across the left hander from over the wicket, room enough for Hayden to shoulder arms

1.3

Sharma to Hayden, no run, beaten the outside edge, drawing Hayden into the half-drive on the front foot

1.4

Sharma to Hayden, no run, pushed across him again, Hayden opts to leave this time

1.5

Sharma to Hayden, no run, right up there, straight this time, Hayden defends strongly towards mid-on

1.6

Sharma to Hayden, no run, pushed across him again and that's a very good first over and he gets a pat on the back as a result

Good start for India's bowlers, then, both of them beating the bat in their opening overs

End of over 2 (maiden) Australia 0/0
ML Hayden    0* (6b)      I Sharma    1-1-0-0
PA Jaques    0* (6b)      RP Singh    1-1-0-0

2.1

Singh to Jaques, no run, good swing away from the left hander, Jaques takes an initial step but pulls out of any shot really early

2.2

Singh to Jaques, no run, angles in on a better line this time, defended on the front foot this time

2.3

Singh to Jaques, OUT, and RP strikes! Huge bounce outside off, Jaques tries to square cut off the back foot and sends a huge nick instead through to Dhoni who pouches a straightforward catch at hip height

PA Jaques c †Dhoni b Singh 0 (11m 9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

A big breakthrough for India and you have to say they deserved it on the basis of their opening pressure.

In comes Ponting, who scored 4 and 3 in Melbourne. Rare failures and he will be keen to make amends here. Three slips and a gully for him

2.4

Singh to Ponting, no run, on off straight away, Ponting comes out to defend right over the ball with a tidy, watchful defensive

2.5

Singh to Ponting, 2 runs, on off, Ponting gets Australia off the mark with a strong cover drive

2.6

Singh to Ponting, no run, swing back into the right hander, who shoulders arms as the ball raps him at a non-shoutable height

End of over 3 (2 runs) Australia 2/1
RT Ponting    2* (3b)      RP Singh    2-1-2-1
ML Hayden    0* (6b)      I Sharma    1-1-0-0

Sharma to Hayden, no run, right up there, driven again to mid-off, once again making the batsman play

3.4

Sharma to Hayden, no run, pushed through on a good length through to the keeper

3.5

Sharma to Hayden, 1 wide, tries the bouncer, on leg, goes way over the top of the batsman

3.5

Sharma to Hayden, 2 runs, Hayden off the mark with a push through mid-off

3.6

Sharma to Hayden, no run, on middle and leg, Hayden squares up to try to push it through the legs, but doesn't get hold of it

"Zaheer sitting this one out is a real blow to India," emails Nirav from India. "What bewilders me, however, is why India would go with RP Singh and Ishant, when they have [Irfan] Pathan available for selection. Furthermore, when the writing (about the pitch) is on the wall, why would you choose to frustrate yourself with two spinners. Wouldn't a triple-headed attack with Pathan, Ishant and RP be more lethal?"

End of over 4 (3 runs) Australia 5/1
ML Hayden    2* (12b)      I Sharma    2-1-3-0
RT Ponting    2* (3b)      RP Singh    2-1-2-1

4.1

Singh to Ponting, no run, good swing back in to Ponting, squaring him up and the ball hits him high

4.2

Singh to Ponting, no run, on off and middle this time, a good push towards mid-on

4.3

Singh to Ponting, 2 runs, short ball, hooked well through to deep backward square where Ishant slides to defend and returns well with a sling-shot elastic arm

4.4

Singh to Ponting, 1 run, good running, a nibble-and-go affair, as Ponting squares a back-foot defence into the ground in front of him

4.5

Singh to Hayden, 1 run, Hayden now goes for the single, pushing into short midwicket and if Wasim Jaffer's underarm shy had have connected at the non-striker's it would have been close for Hayden. He didn't, so it wasn't

4.6

Singh to Ponting, no run, pitched up and Ponting connects well with a straight drive to mid-off, the maker's name on full display

End of over 5 (4 runs) Australia 9/1
RT Ponting    5* (8b)      RP Singh    3-1-6-1
ML Hayden    3* (13b)      I Sharma    2-1-3-0

5.1

Sharma to Hayden, 1 no ball, just overstepped, a good length, a fraction straighter would have been good

5.1

Sharma to Hayden, FOUR, overpitches now and a glorious drive from Hayden through mid-off, right out of the middle

5.2

Sharma to Hayden, no run, up there, good length in front of off, driven back to mid-on

5.3

Sharma to Hayden, no run, drags it down a touch and outside off, Hayden pressing out to square off his legs

5.4

5.5

Sharma to Ponting, no run, down the channel, Ponting leaves easily

5.6

Sharma to Ponting, 1 run, nipped back in off the seam, squeezed out to the off-side for a well-run single

End of over 6 (7 runs) Australia 16/1
RT Ponting    6* (10b)      I Sharma    3-1-10-0
ML Hayden    8* (18b 1x4)      RP Singh    3-1-6-1

RP has decided to go round the wicket to Ponting

6.1

Singh to Ponting, no run, good delivery, whipping through on a good length outside off, Ponting quick to shoulder arms though, even though it cut back a touch

6.2

Singh to Ponting, no run, nipped back in again, Ponting comes out, looking to work it into short midwicket

6.3

Singh to Ponting, no run, nipped right back in this time, Ponting coming forward to defend but it clatters through on to him

6.4

Singh to Ponting, FOUR, width outside off, and just a little shorter, Ponting drives well through the covers, Yuvraj skidding across the surface and boos ring out from the crowd as he touchs the rope with his left foot and returns it. Umpire Bucknor calls for the third umpire and it's ruled a four

6.5

Singh to Ponting, 2 runs, worked with the swing, pushing it behind square for easy runs

Ponting calling for a change of gloves, or maybe a KFC bucket, not sure

6.6

Singh to Ponting, no run, looks to pull away through midwicket but doesn't quite connect

End of over 7 (6 runs) Australia 22/1
RT Ponting    12* (16b 1x4)      RP Singh    4-1-12-1
ML Hayden    8* (18b 1x4)      I Sharma    3-1-10-0

Sharma to Hayden, FOUR, overpitched on off and middle, driven right back through mid-on

7.4

Sharma to Hayden, 1 run, on the legs, turned right through deep backward square

7.5

Sharma to Ponting, no run, nipped back in a good line and length, but Ponting judges it well to leave it

7.6

Sharma to Ponting, no run, more nip, more carry but more leaving, the ball feathering past the off stick

"Is it just me or do Australia seem to win the toss all too often against India on good batting wickets. I can see this being as one-sided as the MCG, 2003 World Cup final, etc," groans Nipun, optimistically.

End of over 8 (5 runs) Australia 27/1
RT Ponting    12* (18b 1x4)      I Sharma    4-1-15-0
ML Hayden    13* (22b 2x4)      RP Singh    4-1-12-1

Nine are running a competition to win 30 minutes with Shane Warne... it takes them a while to add "in the nets".

8.1

Singh to Hayden, no run, gentle but potentially dangerous away swing from Hayden

8.2

Singh to Hayden, no run, pushed down the channel again, Hayden shouldering arms

8.3

Singh to Hayden, no run, left alone again

8.4

Singh to Hayden, OUT, another wicket for RP! A great catch at first slip, after Hayden is squared up, short of a length, and Tendulkar snaps well to his right - possibly should have been the keeper's, then

ML Hayden c Tendulkar b Singh 13 (43m 26b 2x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

So, two early blows for India, just as Kumble predicted, and they're both to RP Singh. Pretty unusual position for Australia to be in. Both openers gone

"Tendulkar's first catch in a floppy hat, I reckon," reckons Sid. He's wearing that - and a beard - because of a face allergy

8.5

Singh to Hussey, 3 runs, outside off, Hussey is away immediately with a sweetly struck cover-drive

8.6

Singh to Ponting, FOUR, worked through the covers this time

End of over 9 (7 runs) Australia 34/2
RT Ponting    16* (19b 2x4)      RP Singh    5-1-19-2
MEK Hussey    3* (1b)      I Sharma    4-1-15-0

9.1

Sharma to Hussey, no run, angles across the left hander, on to middle stump and it's shuffled down immediately off the back foot

9.2

Sharma to Hussey, no run, right up there, the yorker dug out towards mid-off

9.3

Sharma to Hussey, no run, pitches on off, moves wider, the batsman shouldering arms on the back foot

9.4

Sharma to Hussey, no run, right up there on off, pushed down defensively on the front foot

Ishant just slips up on his run-up and starts again. Ishant often has a problem with his run-up, he lost it a fair few times during the Bangalore Test against Pakistan.

9.5

Sharma to Hussey, no run, strays to the pads, Hussey pushes it towards fine leg, Dhoni did well to dive to his right to stop the ball

9.6

Sharma to Hussey, no run, nipped past him on a good length, some encouraging rise

"Toss schmoss, Nipun," retorts Daniel from Australia. "Vettori won all three in the recent Chappell-Hadlee Trophy. And we all know what happened there." Touche, and a good use of the word "schmoss".

End of over 10 (maiden) Australia 34/2
MEK Hussey    3* (7b)      I Sharma    5-2-15-0
RT Ponting    16* (19b 2x4)      RP Singh    5-1-19-2

10.1

Singh to Ponting, 1 run, outside off, driven out to mid-off

10.2

Singh to Hussey, no run, left alone outside off

10.3

Singh to Hussey, FOUR, overpitches, aiming for the yorker, driven squareish through the covers

10.4

Singh to Hussey, 3 runs, on the legs, turned away through fine where Harbhajan Singh does well to tidy up

10.5

Singh to Ponting, no run

10.6

Singh to Ponting, no run, straight one, defended on the back foot

The SCG looks a picture, with Jocelyn Galsworthy-esque clouds - ie fluffy ones - dotted about. A change of bowling now, Sourav Ganguly into the attack with his medium pacers. Two slips, a gully, three in the cover ring

End of over 11 (8 runs) Australia 42/2
RT Ponting    17* (22b 2x4)      RP Singh    6-1-27-2
MEK Hussey    10* (10b 1x4)      I Sharma    5-2-15-0

11.1

Ganguly to Hussey, no run, pushed across the left hander, some movement off the seam, shoulders arms

11.2

Ganguly to Hussey, no run, similar ball, nagging across the left hander

11.3

Ganguly to Hussey, no run, straighter, but still across him, left alone outside off

11.4

Ganguly to Hussey, no run, straight delivery, a touch short, worked into the legs towards short midwicket

11.5

Ganguly to Hussey, 1 run, up there on off, threatens to chop on, but the inside edge goes past the leg stick pretty comfortably

11.6

Ganguly to Ponting, no run, on off, tidy enough length, defended back down

And that's drinks as the big yellow wagon rushes on to the pitch. India have bowled 12 overs in the first hour. "I have had enough of the slow over-rates by both teams," spews another Daniel. "They only have to bowl 15 overs an hour and they can't manage to do that. We are half an hour overtime every day this series."

End of over 12 (1 run) Australia 43/2
RT Ponting    17* (23b 2x4)      SC Ganguly    1-0-1-0
MEK Hussey    11* (15b 1x4)      RP Singh    6-1-27-2

12.1

Singh to Hussey, no run, rising ball outside off, lets it through to the keeper

12.2

Singh to Hussey, no run, left alone again, more encouraging rise

12.3

Singh to Hussey, no run, good delivery, over the wicket by the way, nipping out away from the left hander, who leaves it

12.4

Singh to Hussey, 2 runs, on leg, turned easily down to long leg where Harbhajan has to race round to tidy up

12.5

Singh to Hussey, no run, right up there, trapped down on the front foot

12.6

Singh to Hussey, no run, good length down the off-side channel, again left alone

"How on earth do Australia manage to score at over four runs an over even when they're losing wickets?" wonders Ankit, who has a point.

End of over 13 (2 runs) Australia 45/2
MEK Hussey    13* (21b 1x4)      RP Singh    7-1-29-2
RT Ponting    17* (23b 2x4)      SC Ganguly    1-0-1-0

13.5

Ganguly to Ponting, no run, nipped back to the right hander, played back down off the back foot

14.4

Sharma to Hussey, no run, nipped off the seam and high away from him

Ishant is hitting the high 130kphs consistently

14.5

Sharma to Hussey, 1 run, cover drive into the gap but well saved there by Irfan Pathan, subbing for RP Singh

14.6

Sharma to Ponting, no run, good offering down the channel, Ponting leaves that one well alone

Good consistency, then, from Ishant

End of over 15 (1 run) Australia 46/2
RT Ponting    17* (30b 2x4)      I Sharma    6-2-16-0

Ganguly to Hussey, 3 runs, a little outside edge, through the gap at gully, Ponting pushes for three

15.6

Ganguly to Ponting, no run, straighter one this time, Ponting forced to defend off the back foot

"Slow over-rates don't really matter when the Tests still finish with a full day to spare," brags Peter, who's perhaps missing the point. But it's a fine sledge nonetheless.

16.1

Sharma to Hussey, no run, pushed across the left hander, enough angle on it to leave well alone

16.2

Sharma to Hussey, FOUR, squirts an inside edge through the gully, looking in fact to drive through the covers, the angle of the bat not coming down correctly

Australia's fifty, nevertheless

16.3

Sharma to Hussey, no run, on leg, played over it towards mid-on

16.4

Sharma to Hussey, 1 run, on the legs, played towards short midwicket

16.5

Sharma to Ponting, no run, oh, nearly gets the inside edge off a cracking delivery, hitting the seam, nipping back, cutting Ponting in half

16.6

Sharma to Ponting, 1 leg bye, the swivel pull through fine this time, causing a few problems there is Ishant

"Does anyone else think Ishant looks to be an Indian version of Dizzy Gillespie?" asks Stevo, while Sunil's fuming that Harbhajan Singh hasn't had a bowl yet. "Ponting doesn't have a very good record against Harbhajan. Why has Kumble not brought Bhajji into the attack? Ponting has already played over 30 balls."

17.5

Ganguly to Hussey, no run, comes right forward to defend on the front foot

17.6

Ganguly to Hussey, 3 runs, worked to the man deep at point, and there's an overthrow as well, Ganguly will not be a fan of that

Sharma to Ponting, (no ball) FOUR, outside off, a crunching cover drive for four, and that was an overstep to apply the salt

18.6

Sharma to Ponting, no run, cut right back in off the seam and Ponting's judgement was spot on in letting it go through just missing the off stump

Harbhajan into the attack now. Remember this week Ponting said he wasn't his bunny while Harbhajan, when asked if he had the advantage against him, retorted that he hadn't bowled a lot to him, as he hadn't been out there long enough. Love it.

Cheers Jenny. We're about ten minutes away from the post-lunch session. "25 overs in a session - surely it's time for this universal cricketing trend to be hit on the head by the ICC," says the third Daniel of the morning. The over-rate was appalling during the Boxing Day Test between South Africa and West Indies as well.

"Even in grade cricket in Melbourne we are pushing 16 overs per hour and we are certainly not professionals," points out Brendan.

Back to the cricket then. Ponting and Hussey stride out to the middle. Both batsmen were fluent in the first session, particularly Ponting, who played the shot of the morning - a scorching pull off Ishant Sharma.
