Pathan to Rogers, FOUR, half-volley on off and Rogers despatches the ball with a thumping cover drive and this is his highest score in Tests

"Nice! Reaaally nice!" oozes Mark Nicholas

1.5

Pathan to Rogers, no run, this one whistles down off, Rogers opting to leave one which threatens to angle back at him

1.6

Pathan to Rogers, no run, huge swing in the air there, it did all sorts as it bananaed round and finally zoomed back in from outside leg to catch Rogers in front, a touch of inside edge there possibly

End of over 2 (6 runs) Australia 7/0

    • CJL Rogers 6 (11b 1x4)
    • PA Jaques 0 (1b)
    • IK Pathan 1-0-6-0
    • RP Singh 1-1-0-0
2.1

Singh to Jaques, no run, good swing down the channel, just to say wide enough to leave

2.2

Singh to Jaques, no run, drags it down again down the channel, more of the testing swing, but once again Jaques leaves it well

2.3

Singh to Jaques, FOUR, ah yes, wider and shorter, Jaques stands tall and flays a back-foot cut on the up through backward point, that shot all intent

2.4

Singh to Jaques, no run, pushed on to the backfoot by one which climbs up from a relatively good length to force the defensive down

2.5

Singh to Jaques, 1 run, strays on to the legs there, and turned round through fine leg

2.6

Singh to Rogers, no run, left alone through off, the ball veering away from the right hander, who rocks on to the back foot, in position, but puts his hands down, not interested

End of over 3 (5 runs) Australia 12/0

    • CJL Rogers 6 (12b 1x4)
    • PA Jaques 5 (6b 1x4)
    • RP Singh 2-1-5-0
    • IK Pathan 1-0-6-0

Pathan's ready again, rubbing the ball to get some more shine to help the swing. Three slips, a gully

3.1

Pathan to Jaques, no run, delicious swing away down the channel, very full, but it's harmlessly left alone

3.2

3.3

Pathan to Jaques, no run, down leg, the batsman is a bit late on trying to work that one round

3.4

Pathan to Jaques, no run, right up there, with some swing on to leg, and steps forward, the batsman getting some inside edge as he tries to squeeze it out to midwicket

3.5

Pathan to Jaques, no run, pitches outside off, nips back in from there, towards off but not quite, the ball steered down

3.6

Pathan to Jaques, no run, on middle and leg this time, worked off the toes straight to the man at midwicket

End of over 4 (maiden) Australia 12/0

    • RP Singh 2-1-5-0
4.1

Singh to Rogers, no run, right up there on off, and defended on the front foot

4.2

Singh to Rogers, FOUR, on middle, a touch short, turned off the toes on the front foot through midwicket where Ishant tries to tidy up

One milestone down now, Australia need under 400...A long way to go

4.3

Singh to Rogers, FOUR, pitches outside off, moves away, climbs a bit and the batsman follows it, guiding it through point off the back foot on the rise

Do that 100 times more...

4.4

Singh to Rogers, no run, outside off, defended on the back foot

4.5

Singh to Rogers, 1 run, Rogers walks over his stumps, as he did in the first innings, and flicks one from off and middle back into square on the front foot

4.6

Singh to Jaques, no run, strays on to leg and worked easily to midwicket with a swish of the hands, oh, and the bat

End of over 5 (9 runs) Australia 21/0

    • PA Jaques 5 (13b 1x4)
    • CJL Rogers 15 (17b 3x4)
    • RP Singh 3-1-14-0
    • IK Pathan 2-1-6-0
5.1

Pathan to Rogers, OUT, beautiful delivery, nipped away off the seam, Rogers looking to be positive is squared up on the back foot outside off and sends the thinnest of edges through

CJL Rogers c †Dhoni b Pathan 15 (22m 18b 3x4 0x6) SR: 83.33

Pathan jumps up in delight and is immediately swamped by his team-mates...but what to say for Rogers? He's got 4 and 15 in this Test deputising for the injured Matthew Hayden. You can only imagine what they are thinking, disappointment for both no doubt, and frustration for different reasons

Now then. Cometh the moment, cometh the captain

5.2

Pathan to Ponting, 1 run, off the mark straight away with a quick single

5.3

Pathan to Jaques, no run, defends on the back foot behind a short ball on off

5.4

Pathan to Jaques, no run, just outside off, takes one step forward and defends on the front foot

5.5

Pathan to Jaques, no run, another tight defensive on the front foot

5.6

Pathan to Jaques, FOUR, dropped! A squeak of a chance at point, Jaques flashing hard at a short and wide one off the back foot, and the ball carries on

So, India just need to take a wicket nine more times... I know where my money is, and it's not with Australia getting their record 17 wins on the spin

End of over 6 (5 runs) Australia 26/1

    • PA Jaques 9 (17b 2x4)
    • RT Ponting 1 (1b)
    • IK Pathan 3-1-11-1
    • RP Singh 3-1-14-0
6.1

Singh to Ponting, 1 leg bye, pitches outside leg, staying over the for the right hander, a vain shout as the ball goes on to rap Ponting

6.2

Singh to Jaques, 1 run, turned away from the batsman, shortish too, and pushed into the covers

6.3

Singh to Ponting, FOUR, width outside off, crashed on the up with a back-foot steer, the front leg rising up in the process, and the ball traces through cover

6.4

Singh to Ponting, 1 run, Ponting's surprised by the extra bounce this time, his fingers coming up off the bat as the ball catches his right hand in the act of fending down off the back foot

6.5

Singh to Jaques, no run, defended this time

6.6

Singh to Jaques, no run, strays down leg, rising delivery and the batsman tries to hook it round, is late on the shot and Dhoni makes an exaggerated dive to take it

End of over 7 (7 runs) Australia 33/1

    • PA Jaques 10 (20b 2x4)
    • RT Ponting 6 (4b 1x4)
    • RP Singh 4-1-20-0
    • IK Pathan 3-1-11-1
7.1

Pathan to Ponting, 1 run, more encouraging outswing, trouble is that it bends down the leg side

7.2

Pathan to Jaques, no run, straight delivery, defended on the back foot straight down

7.3

Pathan to Jaques, no run, tight delivery, pushing the batsman onto the back foot in front of off and he plays it very late indeed

Three slips and a gully

7.4

Pathan to Jaques, no run, oh hello, the batsman cut away from his body there, feet welded to the crease, and the ball pops up higher down off than expected and nearly takes the top edge

7.5

Pathan to Jaques, no run, more swing, defended down on the front foot

A Mexican wave is going round with the predictable boos as it hits the non-playing Members section

7.6

Pathan to Jaques, FOUR, width outside off, and Jaques effects one of his favourite back-foot cuts through deep backward point, just about avoiding the slip cordon. It's in the air, which will encourage India

End of over 8 (5 runs) Australia 38/1

    • PA Jaques 14 (25b 3x4)
    • RT Ponting 7 (5b 1x4)
    • IK Pathan 4-1-16-1
    • RP Singh 4-1-20-0
8.1

Singh to Ponting, no run, makes a big gesture of leaving it as he strides forward and the ball jinks past him off the seam

8.2

Singh to Ponting, no run, strayed down leg and Dhoni does well to step to his left and take the ball

Dhoni's movement was akin to an aerobics manoeuvre from an 80s video

8.3

Singh to Ponting, 1 run, turned round off the legs through the 45

Ganguly, to confirm, was the man who dropped the catch last over

8.4

Singh to Jaques, no run, Jaques is retrospectively furious with himself for having a full-blooded swing at a square drive away from his body, the ball short, wide and inviting, and nearly gets the edge through

8.5

Singh to Jaques, no run, defended more stoutly this time

8.6

Singh to Jaques, 1 wide, booming wide, swinging way away down off, Singh just losing control of it there

Three slips and two gullies, mind

8.6

Singh to Jaques, 2 runs, straight, rising, and tucked round off the hips to midwicket

End of over 9 (4 runs) Australia 42/1

    • PA Jaques 16 (28b 3x4)
    • RT Ponting 8 (8b 1x4)
    • RP Singh 5-1-24-0
    • IK Pathan 4-1-16-1
9.1

Pathan to Ponting, no run, shuttled down the channel of leg, the batsman leaves it be as it was a tidy enough length

9.2

Pathan to Ponting, 1 run, pushed forward for a quick single

9.3

Pathan to Jaques, no run, super ball, a hostile yorker, and somehow Jaques manages to dig it out, and somehow it misses off stump

9.4

Pathan to Jaques, OUT, but he's gone this time! Pathan banging it in outside off, the ball swinging away and Jaques lashes a(nother) booming drive which takes the edge and is caught in the slips

PA Jaques c Jaffer b Pathan 16 (46m 30b 3x4 0x6) SR: 53.33

India continue to dominate here and that wicket isn't too much of a surprise really, Jaques had been flashing and missing quite a lot. So this opening partnership fails yet again, both batsmen again dismissed within overs of each other, and early

India are cock-a-hoop. Here is Hussey, on a pair

9.5

Pathan to Hussey, no run, another great delivery, testing him down the channel on a good length, left alone

9.6

Pathan to Hussey, FOUR, too much width on this one and the batsman reaches away from his body to drive forcefully through the covers

End of over 10 (5 runs) Australia 47/2

    • MEK Hussey 4 (2b 1x4)
    • RT Ponting 9 (10b 1x4)
    • IK Pathan 5-1-21-2
    • RP Singh 5-1-24-0

Looking for the positives at least for Australia, they are racing along at a good run-rate. But both openers are gone, it's all India at the moment. Here's the young Ishant

10.1

Sharma to Ponting, no run, starts with a horrible wide down leg, but we'll allow him the loosener

10.2

Sharma to Ponting, 2 runs, this one is clipped away off the legs, just not found his line yet

10.3

Sharma to Ponting, 3 runs, finds the line this time, on off, but oh dear it's now the length, which is honesty isn't bad, but Ponting's shot is a good one and there's a bit of a misfield there by Singh

Three slips and a gully, a predictably attacking field

10.4

Sharma to Hussey, no run, shunted past the left hander, Ishant staying over the wicket, and wide down the channel, allowing the batsman to leave it

10.5

Sharma to Hussey, no run, more of the same, really

He needs to just get it a touch closer...

10.6

Sharma to Hussey, no run, and again... Ishant then takes his cap

End of over 11 (5 runs) Australia 52/2

    • MEK Hussey 4 (5b 1x4)
    • RT Ponting 14 (13b 1x4)

11.1

Pathan to Ponting, 1 run, strayed on to leg, turned down through fine leg

11.2

Pathan to Hussey, no run, pushed down the off-side channel

11.3

Pathan to Hussey, no run, pushed down the channel again and left alone

11.4

Pathan to Hussey, no run, more of the same

11.5

Pathan to Hussey, no run, alarming/excellent swing depending on which side you're on, the ball curling round away from the batsman

11.6

Pathan to Hussey, no run, swing away from the left hander, the ball going on towards middle and leg, and defended well

End of over 12 (1 run) Australia 53/2

    • MEK Hussey 4 (10b 1x4)
    • RT Ponting 15 (14b 1x4)
    • IK Pathan 6-1-22-2
    • I Sharma 1-0-5-0
12.1

Sharma to Ponting, no run, oh, a huge appeal for one which pitches outside and Ponting is playing back in front of his stumps

12.2

Sharma to Ponting, 2 runs, strays on to the pads and Ponting tucks it away to midwicket

12.3

Sharma to Ponting, no run, angles in naggingly at the right hander, who traps the ball under his bat with a defensive forward step

12.4

Sharma to Ponting, no run, very full delivery, a yorker in fact, and it's pushed forward on the toes

12.5

Sharma to Ponting, 1 run, full again, on leg, turned off the pads through square

Four slips and a gully

12.6

Sharma to Hussey, 1 leg bye, stays over for the left hander, angles it back in but starts too wide and it's turned off the legs down to fine leg

Five minutes left today, two overs left perhaps?

End of over 13 (4 runs) Australia 57/2

    • MEK Hussey 4 (11b 1x4)
    • RT Ponting 18 (19b 1x4)
    • I Sharma 2-0-8-0
    • IK Pathan 6-1-22-2

Kumble wants to give his team the best chance of two overs, fielders almost in a square around the bat

13.1

Kumble to Hussey, 1 run, loops it on leg, Hussey turns it off the legs behind square

13.2

Kumble to Ponting, no run, looped right up there on off and pressed over the ball in defence

13.3

Kumble to Ponting, no run, ripper, the ball pitching on middle and leg and ripping back past the outside edge, beating Ponting who sort-of popped the bat as he squared into it

13.4

Kumble to Ponting, FOUR, good shot in reply, a short one bouncing up on off and Ponting crashes it through the covers on the up

13.5

Kumble to Ponting, no run, on off, comes forward and defends with a push as he closes the face of the bat into short midwicket

13.6

Kumble to Ponting, 1 run, worked into the on-side again

And there will be another over, Kumble gets his wish

End of over 14 (6 runs) Australia 63/2

    • RT Ponting 23 (24b 2x4)
    • MEK Hussey 5 (12b 1x4)
    • A Kumble 1-0-6-0
    • I Sharma 2-0-8-0

So, Ishant will bowl the last over as TV shows replays of Pathan's wickets, Pathan bagging both openers in both innings of course

14.1

Sharma to Ponting, 1 no ball, an overstep, Ishant just getting a bit excited in his desire to help his team with a wicket

14.1

Sharma to Ponting, no run, right up there, and pushed into the covers on the front foot

14.2

Sharma to Ponting, 1 run, fullish delivery on leg, tucked off the front foot through to square and they turn down thoughts of a second

14.3

Sharma to Hussey, no run, stays over for the left hander, that one slightly closer than his previous offerings, but it's well left all the same on the front foot

14.4

Sharma to Hussey, no run, bustled past him again, this one angling vaguely wide and jumping on further away from the batsman, who chooses to leave with caution

14.5

Sharma to Hussey, no run, round the wicket this time, but still fails to make the batsman play, down the corridor

14.6

Sharma to Hussey, no run, again, that one goes through to the keeper and it's easily left

So that's the close of play then on yet another gripping day where India are in control with the first two Australian wickets in their pockets, Pathan's pockets specifically, and still Australia facing an unusual mountain. They're going to have battle exceptionally hard to win from here, which would be a record 17 wins on the bounce. More likely is an Indian victory, and they have two days to bowl them out following some excellent batting from the nightwatchman Irfan Pathan, then a middle-order contribution from Laxman, helped by Dhoni and Singh.

Thanks for joining us again today, and for your emails, be sure to tune in once more tomorrow for what promises to continue to be an interesting match.

End of over 15 (2 runs) Australia 65/2

    • MEK Hussey 5 (16b 1x4)
    • RT Ponting 24 (27b 2x4)
    • I Sharma 3-0-10-0
    • A Kumble 1-0-6-0

11:30 local Time to start. The umpires are at their positions, out stride Hussey and Ponting, a skip in their steps. The Indians are ready, and it will be Kumble to start off. Buckle up.

11:27 local Minutes remain before day four of a most entertaining Test match begins. The players have completed their practice rituals and have gone in to get ready. The television commentators have made their predictions , there's a solid buzz in the air, and out walk the two on-field umpires. What scenes for cricket.

11:16 local Conditions are a bit cloudy, which will encourage India's bowlers, none the least Irfan Pathan and RP Singh. Crowds filling up the seats at a steady trickle. Its the weekend, and with this day poised so excitingly, lets hope for a packed house.

The day-four track looks drier, so Anil Kumble will like that. He bowled a gem to Ricky Ponting just before stumps yesterday, so if you hit it in the right areas, its a great surface to bowl on. The overcast conditions, however, with moisture in the air and grass on the surface, hold the most for the guys who can swing it.

11:02 local Hello and a very warm welcome to what could be the last day of an utterly enthralling Test between two competitive sides.

With Jenny Thompson off for the weekend this is Jamie Alter, your commentator for the entire day.

Each day of this match has been even more gripping, with sessions being shared evenly, sessions being dominated by individuals, and nerves frayed by innings of differing aggression or workmanlike valour. India are favorites from here, with Australia needing nothing less than a miracle to achieve a record 17th straight win. Only three times has a side ever chased more than 400 runs to win a Test.

Whatever happens, it's been a great advertisement for Test cricket, the true form of this wonderful sport. If India win, this will rank as one of their most memorable victories ever. If Australia pull off a heist, it will be a fitting stamp to their grit and determination, a hallmark of their success over the last decade.

Either way, I'm here to bring you all the action as I see it. So stick around for the start of day four, coming up shortly.

Just reading the start of the feedback emails today, and the first one, from Graham McIvor, is a good way to kick off the day: "It is rare that the scene is set so perfectly for a Test match. Two days to go with good weather expected, so a result is inevitable, India desperate to win a Test in this series, a lot of extra "needle" following a lot of controversy in the previous Test, two superb batsmen at the crease with so much at stake."

Players are going through their drills. There's Hussey, stretching, and Pathan and Ishant Sharma, messing about. Spirits look good in both camps.

15.1

Kumble to Ponting, 1 leg bye, starts off with one flighted on leg stump and Ponting's away, turning it off the pads to midwicket for the first run of the day

Hussey, on a pair, faces up. Slip, short leg and silly mid-off in place.

15.2

Kumble to Hussey, 2 runs, and he averts the dreaded pair, pushing forward to a length ball and running wide of slip, Sharma does the chasing

15.3

Kumble to Hussey, no run, first loud appeal of the day, as Hussey strides forward to one that pitches on off and spins in sharply, thats a very good shout as the ball clips the front pad but Bowden shakes his head, it looked like hitting middle stump but perhaps heights the factor

15.5

Kumble to Hussey, no run, again he hits a good length and Hussey has to get over it in a hurry

There's a man at fine leg, pretty square, and a square leg

16.6

He looks positive, as always.

17.5

Kumble to Ponting, FOUR, good shot, as Kumble errs in length and Ponting cuts though the covers

17.6

Kumble to Ponting, no run, well flighted, the leg break pitching on middle and spinning away, Ponting doesn't read it all that well and just defends in front of slip

19.2

Sharma to Hussey, no run, short of a length, pitching outside leg and going across, well defended

Sharma practices his seam position as he walks back to his mark.

19.4

Sharma to Hussey, no run, and thats an edge that doesn't carry, Hussey poking at a good delivery going across the body but the ball dies in front of Laxman at second slip

Sharma is taken off after a great six-over spell. Or not! Bowden tells Dhoni to remove the helmet behind the stumps. They're at the wrong ends! I've not seen that before. Confusion. Sharma takes his cap off and walks off, then comes back. Bowden says its a five-ball over, when Pathan's clearly bowled six balls. This is ridiculous, happening too many times in this match. Now, just before the over, Kumble, Sehwag and Sharma stood together and the captain asked if he wanted another over, as Sehwag said to give the rookie another crack because Ponting was facing. Sharma's response was, "haan, main karoonga (Yes, I will bowl one.)" Sharma troubled Ponting all morning and deserved that wicket during an excellent spell. In comes Michael Clarke.
